Ödön von Horváth and the Hotel Post
The Hotel Post is certainly one of the most historic
houses in Murnau. Since 1632 the hotel has been owned
by the family Bayerlacher/Wagner, today Köglmayr. The
hotel has got 16 rooms. In Horváth’s days, a cinema was
on the ground floor; cultural events took place in the
Ratskeller – opportunities Horváth undoubtedly took
advantage of.
At the hotel, Ödön von Horváth was a special guest.
He made persons he got to know in Murnau into his
characters. The hotel owner of those days, Karoline Wagner,
and the caretaker Kasimir, for example, function as
characters in “Kasimir und Karoline” (first produced in
1932).
February 10 th , 1933, was an important event for Horváth
in Murnau. When Hitler’s speech from the Sports Palace
in Berlin was broadcast, Horváth asked the waitress
to turn the radio off, offering her 10 Reichsmarks. As a
result the SA “accompanied” Horváth home. Later the
Horváth-Villa was searched. Thereupon Horváth had to
leave Murnau.
