from Reep = rope. It refers to the place where ropes for ships
had been made during the past centuries. Many clubs, bars,
discotheques and theatres like the well known “Rocky – Musical”
and the St.Pauli theatre are the main sights. There are also many
places in the sidestreets like Große Freiheit with famous
stripclubs like „Dollhouse“ and „Susis Show Bar“ up to “Große
Freiheit 36”.
St. Michael’s Church is Hamburg’s official
symbol. The church or rather its tower has
been nicknamed „Michel“. The youngest of
Hamburg’s main churches is the most beautiful
among the Nordic Baroque churches.
Today’s church is already the third church
building at its place. From 1907 to 1912 it
was rebuild after the original look of 1786.
After being damaged in World War II, it has
been renovated in 1952. Today, more than a
million tourists visit the church every year.
The Town Hall was built at the end of the
19th century in Nordic Renaissance style. It
has 657 rooms and some glorious representative
rooms. The 111 meter wide and 112
meter high city hall is home to Hamburg’s
local government and parliament. The golden
Latin inscription on the city hall portal represents
Hamburg as a traditional free city: „May
posterity strive to preserve the freedom won
by our elders“.
The Jungfernstieg is Hamburg’s most
popular street. It is not rare to see a
German or international celebrity
shopping there. Already in 1665
Jungfernstieg was built as a promenade
on the southern side of the inner
Alster. The area around is very exclusive.
Nearby Alsterhaus and Hamburger Hof are large shopping
centers.
The Alster is a 56 kilometer long river
that flows through southern Holstein
and Hamburg into the Elbe. The most
interesting part is the Alster before it
flows into the Elbe, dammed up to a
lake in the midst of Hamburg. Many
buildings around the Alster feature
white facades and copper roofs. The
outer Alster is about 164 hectares
wide and about 4,5 meters deep.
