DIE SCHATULLE ALS HÜTERIN
VON MODESCHÄTZEN
A Fashion Chest
gestalteten Erdgeschosslandschaft funktional sinnvolle Anbindungen
With the design for the new Fashion Center, we tried to take up the
typology of the storage and warehouse buildings in the East Harbor
of Berlin and, at the same time, to look for an interesting reinterpretation
of this simple building type for a new use.
A transparent glass base that opens on all four sides of the building
and, with a differentiated ground-floor layout, connects to the
surrounding areas in an attractive and inviting architectural gesture
contains all necessary public-use facilities of the building. Above
that, a four-storey cube rises, clad in gold-colored, foldable copper
panels. It accommodates the showrooms of the individual fashion
labels – changeable aspects of the façade allude, like with an ironic
wink, to the ever-new collections of the fashion world.
We also paid much attention to the quality of the interior spaces:
by building in two different circulation systems (escalator and a
flight of stairs) and generous floor foyers, an interesting and varied
walkway was created for the public from the ground floor to the
Sky Bar on the roof terrace.
