Hamburg
Central Station was opened in
1906. It replaced a number of smaller terminus
stations, which were spread over the city.
Today the central station is frequented by
760 long distance trains and about 1000 local
trains every day.
The Hafen City (Harbour City) is a new district built in a rush
during the past years, located directly by the Elbe river. On an
area of 157 hectares, the Hafen City offers a mixture of offices
and flats, as well as shops, restaurants, cafés and places of cultural
life. Our newest landmark will be the new concert hall
(Elbphiharmonic halls) a construction on top of a historical
warehouse it features three modern concert halls, luxurious
apartments and a five star hotel.
The warehouse complex is a Hamburg
icon and one of the main attractions of
the harbour boat trips. The construction
of the worlds largest warehouse
district started in 1883. Five years
later, parts of the harbour became a
free trade zone. Since 1991 the warehouse complex has the
status of a monument.
Although the harbour of Hamburg
is 110 kilometers away from the
North Sea, it is still a sea port. With
a total area of over 7 hectares it is
Europes second biggest container
harbour after Rotterdam. While
Hamburg became one of Germanys
biggest industrial cities and an important centre of the service
industry, the harbour remained to be the heart of the city. Every
year on the 11th of May, Hamburg celebrates the birthday of its
harbour.
The Portuguese Quarter is a part of the
town in the south of Hamburgs city centre.
Traditionally, it is a quarter of small business,
especially renowned for its gastronomy.
Because of the a large number of „harbour
pubs“ , the Portuguese Quarter was nicknamed „the coast“ in the
1950’s and 1960’s.
The fish market: In the 17th century the fishermen sold their
fish at the “Fischmarkt” every Sunday morning. Today, basically
everything from fruits and vegetables to meat and other
products is offered in the early morning.
Reeperbahn is the main street of
Hamburg’s nightlife and red light district
of St. Pauli. It is 930 meters long and goes
from Millerntor to Nobistor. It´s considered
to be „the most sinful mile in the
world“. The name Reeperbahn comes
