Vorwort
Preface
Liebe Leserin, lieber Leser,
Laser-Laboratoriums in Göttingen.
Nanostrukturierte photonische Gassensoren liegen nun weitere neue
Vorwort
Preface
Dear ladies and gentlemen,
The year 2009 is over. It was an eventful year of changes, new tasks and
new challenges; and for me, it was my first year as new head of the
Laser-Laboratorium (a laboratory for laser science) in Göttingen,
Germany.
This year, many changes happened in the LLG; not only the usual
changes that go ahead with a new director, but as well the founding of a
new department, Laser Plasma Hybrid Technology. New tasks and new
possibilities are integrated in the LLG structure this way, the innovative
and interdisciplinary work of laser and plasma technology, medicine,
biology, chemistry and physics opens new working fields.
After the successfully finished major-project NanoSens – Nano
Structured Photonic Gas Sensors we are ready to face new tasks. One of
these tasks is to built up the Innovation Network for Plasma Technology
of Lower Saxony (NIP, German: Niedersächsischer Innovationsverbund
Plasmatechnik) which was granted in December 2009 and aims to form
new scientific cooperation projects with small and medium sized
companies.
On the other hand we have lots of smaller projects from our different
fields of activities; such as medical diagnostics, environmental analytics,
measurement techniques and safety engineering. Every single project is
appreciated as an important contribution for a future of innovation and
progress.
Just as all scientific research institutes in Germany, we have to fight with
the implications of the economical crisis – but such a crisis is not only a
difficulty to handle, it can be taken as a chance to find new ways and
break new ground with courage and inventiveness. In this regard, I would
like to thank my employees for showing this courage and inventiveness
and going the new ways with me as well as I would like to thank our
partners and principals for their reliance in us and in the future.
Now I would like to invite you to read more about the Laser-Laboratorium
and the scientific research project. If you desire any further information,
please do not hesitate to contact me and my team.
With kind regards and my best wishes for a successful year 2010,
The LLG Profile
Das Laser-Laboratorium Göttingen ist seit
der Gründung des Trägervereins im Jahr
1987 eine vom Land Niedersachsen
institutionell geförderte Forschungseinrichtung
mit 5 Abteilungen.
Diese Abteilungen, Ultrakurzpuls-Photonik,
Optik/Kurze Wellenlängen, Nanostrukturen,
Photonische Sensorik und die neue
Abteilung Laser-Plasma-Hybridtechnologie,
haben mit ihren Forschungsprojekten und
Entwicklungen auf unterschiedlichen Feldern
der Laserphysik, Lasermesstechnik
und Laseranwendung weltweite Anerkennung
erlangt. Diese findet ihren Ausdruck in
zahlreichen internationalen Kooperationen
und Entwicklungsaufträgen.
Zudem werden Synergien zwischen den
Universitäten und Fachhochschulen, den
Instituten der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft und
der regional ansässigen feinmechanischoptischen
Industrie entwickelt.
Die Forschungsaktivitäten reichen von der
Entwicklung von berührungslos arbeitenden
Lasermesstechniken für umweltrelevante
Bereiche bis hin zur Produktveredelung, der
Herstellung neuer Produkte unter
Verwendung von Lasern und der Entwicklung
neuer Lasersysteme.
Forschungs- und Entwicklungsergebnisse
werden von lokalen Firmen vermarktet oder
in Lizenz vertrieben.
Since the sponsoring association LLG e. V.
was founded in 1987, the Laser Laboratorium
in Göttingen runs as a non-profit
special-purpose enterprise which is
institutionally supported by the State of
Lower Saxony, Germany.
In the past years, the departments Ultrashort
Pulse Photonics, Optics / Short Wavelengths,
Nanostructures, Photonic Sensor
Technology and the new department Laser
Plasma Hybrid Technology gained
worldwide acceptance and respect for
research and development in the fields of
physics. This acceptance is expressed by a
multitude of international co-operations and
development orders.
Synergies between universities, the
institutes of the Max-Planck Corporation and
the regional industry of precision mechanics
and optics are generated. The research
activities range from the development of
non-contacting laser measurement technique
used for environ-mentally relevant
areas, to product processing as well as the
manufacturing of new products by using
laser radiation, and the development of new
laser systems. Results from research and
development are marketed by local
companies; or they are distributed under
license.
Ultrakurzpulsphotonik
Ultra Short Pulse Photonics
Eine Besonderheit von Kurzpulslasern
ist ihre Fähigkeit, Energie
sowohl zeitlich als auch räumlich
enorm stark zu bündeln.
Dadurch ermöglichen diese
einzigartigen Laserquellen die
Erzeugung höchster Intensitäten
mit mäßigem Energieeinsatz.
Somit bietet die Kurzpulslaser-
Technologie das Potential,
anspruchsvollste Aufgaben in
der medizinischen Diagnostik,
Telekommunikation, Materialbearbeitung
und Umweltanalytik
zu bewältigen.
Viele moderne Anwendungen
erfordern kurzwellige Strahlung,
um entweder eine hohe
Photonenenergie bereitzustellen
oder eine hohe Ortsauflösung zu
erzielen.
Kombiniert man die kurze Pulsdauer
mit kurzer Wellenlänge, so
eröffnet sich eine Reihe
neuartiger Anwendungsmöglichkeiten.
Die primäre Aufgabe
unserer Arbeitsgruppe besteht
darin, Techniken zur Erzeugung
und Anwendung kurzwelliger
Strahlung mit kurzen Pulsdauern
zu entwickeln.
14
Ultrashort-pulse lasers offer the
unique capability of an extreme
concentration of energy in both
time and space. Such sources
allow the generation of very high
intensities, while delivering only
moderate energies in a well
controlled manner. Therefore,
the ultra short pulse laser
technology holds great potential
for applications in medical
diagnostics, telecommunication,
environmental sensing and
materials processing.
There is a need for short wavelength
radiation, either to provide
high photon energies or to reach
a high spatial resolution in
numerous applications
Combining short pulse durations
with a short wavelength holds
great potential for a row of novel
applications. The main objective
of our department is to develop
ultra short pulse laser systems
emitting short wavelength
radiation and promote their
applications in science and
technology.
Ultra Short Pulse Photonics
Erzeugung ultrakurzer UV-Pulse in gasgefüllten
Hohlwellenleitern
Mit dem Einsatz der Hohlfaser-Kompressionstechnik
in Kombination mit unserem KrF
Excimerlasersystem konnten wir die
Erzeugung von ultrakurzen UV-Pulsen
demonstrieren. Energetische Pulse bei
248 nm mit einer Dauer von 110 fs wurden
in einer mit Neon gefüllten Hohlfaser
spektral verbreitert und anschließend mit
einem Gitterkompressor komprimiert. Die so
gewonnenen Pulse von 24 fs Dauer
erreichten eine Energie von 200 µJ.
Eine weitere Erhöhung der Pulsenergie um
den Faktor 1,5-1,7 kann durch den Einsatz
von ‚gechirpten„ Spiegeln anstelle des
Gitterkompressors erzielt werden. Die
momentan verfügbare Energie reicht
dennoch bereits aus, eine weitere Stufe zur
spektralen Verbreiterung nachzuschalten.
Dadurch wird die Erzeugung von energetischen
Pulsen mit wenigen optischen Zyklen
möglich. [Nagy, Opt. Letters]
Generation of Ultrashort DUV Pulses in
Gas-Filled Hollow Fibers
We demonstrated the generation of ultrashort
DUV pulses by applying the hollow
fiber compression technique to amplified
pulses of a KrF excimer laser system. Highenergy
110-fs pulses at 248 nm were
spectrally broadened by self-phase modulation
in a neon-filled hollow fiber and
subsequently compressed by a grating-pair.
In this way, 24-fs pulses with energies of
200 µJ were generated at 248 nm.
It is possible to further increase the energy
of the compressed pulse by a factor of 1.5-
1.7 by using chirped mirrors instead of the
grating compressor. Nevertheless, the
current pulse energy is large enough to
drive a second stage of spectral broadening
which will enable the generation of fewcycle
pulses in the UV with much higher
energies than currently possible. [Nagy,
Zur vollständigen Charakterisierung von
ultrakurzen UV-Pulsen haben wir ein FROG
Gerät basierend auf dem ‚transienten Gitter„
(TG)-Schema entwickelt. Dabei mussten
etliche speziell im UV-Bereich auftretende
Probleme gelöst werden. [Nagy,Opt. Express]
Aufgrund der hohen Materialdispersion im
UV-Bereich musste eine rein reflektive
Anordnung implementiert werden. Um die
größtmögliche zeitliche Auflösung zu erzielen
wurde das TG-Schema eingesetzt, da
dessen spektraler Einengungseffekt deutlich
geringer ist als beim häufig verwendeten „self
diffraction“ (SD) Schema. Darüber hinaus
bietet die TG-Anordnung perfekte Phasenanpassung,
wodurch die Empfindlichkeit des
Gerätes erhöht wird. Obwohl das Gerät
(Abb. unten) in erster Linie für die
Charakterisierung von UV Pulsen konzipiert
ist, kann seine Funktionalität problemlos auf
den sichtbaren und/oder infraroten Spektralbereich
erweitert werden.
For the characterization of ultrashort DUV
characteristic of the deep-UV spectral range
were addressed. [Nagy,Opt. Express]
(TG) FROG arrangement
Because of the high material dispersion in
the UV, an all-reflective arrangement was
implemented. In order to reach an ultimate
temporal resolution, the TG scheme is the
method of choice since its spectral filtering
effect is considerably smaller than that of
the frequently used self-diffraction (SD)
scheme. Furthermore, the TG arrangement
provides fully phase matched operation
thus increasing the sensitivity of the device.
Although the device (below) was primarily
designed for the challenging task of DUV
pulse characterization, it can easily be
adapted for the measurements throughout
the visible and IR spectral range.
Oberflächenstrukturierung durch Laser-
ablation im Nahfeld einer Phasenmaske
Eine neue Methode zur Erzeugung großflächiger
Oberflächenstrukturen durch
Laserablation wurde entwickelt.
Die Probe wird durch das Interferenzfeld im
Nahfeld einer Phasenmaske bestrahlt. Zum
Schutz der Maske und der Probe vor
Kontamination durch die ablatierten Partikel
wird ein strömender Flüssigkeitsfilm im
Raum zwischen Maske und Probe appliziert
(Abb. unten). [Borchers, Proc. LAMP]
Zudem wurde ein Verfahren zur Vermeidung
unerwünschter lateraler Variationen
der Strukturbildung ausgearbeitet. Aufgrund
der nicht vollständig unterdrückten nullten
Beugungsordnung hinter der Maske
entsteht eine z-Modulation des Interferenzmusters.
Ist die Probe nicht exakt parallel
zur Maske montiert, so verursacht diese
Modulation eine laterale Variation des
resultierenden Musters.
Um diesen störenden Effekt zu eliminieren,
erfolgt eine Translation der Probe in der z-
Richtung während der Bestrahlung. So
entsteht eine Mittelung über mehrere
Verteilungen. Theoretische Betrachtungen
wie auch experimentelle Nachweise (Abb.
rechts) belegen, dass diese Mittelungsprozedur
in einem regulären und gleichmäßigen
Ablationsergebnis resultiert.
Surface Patterning by Laser Ablation
using a Proximity Phase Mask Setup
We introduced a new approach for the
generation of large-area periodic surface
structures on different materials (like
polymers and semiconductors) by laser
ablation. The sample is illuminated with the
interference pattern emerging in close
proximity behind a phase mask. Effective
protection of the phase mask and the
sample against contamination and debris
formation is obtained by applying a flowing
water film between the mask and the
sample (figure on the left), [Borchers, Proc.
LAMP]
Schematische Darstellung des Aufbaus zur Nahfeldablation
- Scheme of the proximity phase mask setup
In addition a technique to eliminate an
unwanted lateral variation of the generated
structures was introduced. Caused by the
non-vanishing zero diffraction order of the
phase mask, a z-modulation of the field
distribution in the space behind the mask
occurs. If the sample is not perfectly parallel
to the mask, this z-modulation translates to
a lateral change of the resulting surface
pattern. Considering practical adjustment
tolerances, this variation is virtually
impossible to avoid.
For the elimination of this disturbing effect
we propose to translate the sample in the zdirection
during illumination. In this way an
averaging over many different distributions
occurs. As evidenced by theory and
experiment (figure below) this averaging
yields a smooth and regular ablation
pattern.
Oberflächen-Mikrostrukturierung mit
diffraktiven optischen Elementen
Zur schnellen Erzeugung periodischer
Oberflächenstrukturen durch Laserbearbeitung
haben wir eine neue Methode
eingeführt. Ein selbstgebautes diffraktives
optisches Element (DOE), dass den
Laserstrahl in vorkalkulierte Richtungen
umverteilt, kommt hierbei zum Einsatz. Die
Herstellung des DOE geschieht in drei
Schritten: Aufbringung einer SiOx-Schicht
auf ein Quatzsubstrat, rückseitige Ablation
der Schicht mit ArF Laser-Beschuss gemäß
einem vorkalkulierten 2D-Muster und
Oxidierung der Schicht zur Überführung in
Quarz, das die gewünschte Oberflächenstruktur
trägt.
In einer Teststudie wurde ein DOE zur
Erzeugung einer 2D-Verteilung von Intensitätsmaxima
berechnet (Abb. unten rechts).
Somit lässt sich in der Fourier-Ebene des
DOE ein Lochraster in ein Werkstück
ablatieren (Abb. mitte).
In einem weiteren Prozessschritt wurde
diese Struktur mit einem Abdruckverfahren
auf Polymerproben übertragen, die danach
aufgrund der Topologie der Oberflächenstrukturen,
superhydrophobe Eigenschaft
zeigen (Abb. rechts).
Surface Micro-Fabrication using
Diffractive Optical Elements
We demonstrated a new approach facilitating
the rapid generation of periodic
surface structures via parallel laser
processing. A diffractive optical element
(DOE) developed and built in the LLG is
used to redistribute the laser energy to form
a desired pattern for surface ablation. For
the fabrication of the DOE, a backside laser
ablation of a SiOx layer on a fused silica
substrate is applied: A computed 2D map
diagram is formed in the silicon suboxide
layer by ArF laser ablation. Then the
system is annealed to convert it into a
monolithic fused silica unit carrying the
desired surface profile.
In a pilot study, a DOE was designed to
generate a 2D-matrix of intensity maxima
(fig. on the left). Thus, placing a sample into
the Fourier-plane of the DOE, a periodic
hole-array is ablated in a single process
cycle (fig. in the middle). In a subsequent
step a replica of the processed surface can
be produced by transfer moulding. The
resulting topography facilitates a superhydrophobic
behaviour of the fabricated
components (fig. on the right).
zur Strahlführung.
Ein Schwerpunkt liegt bei den für
die Halbleiter-Lithographie relevanten
tiefen UV-Wellenlängen
(248 nm, 193 nm), alle anderen
gebräuchlichen Laser-Wellenlängen
sind aber ebenso verfügbar.
Es werden Messapparaturen zur
Bewertung der Effizienz und der
Langzeit-Stabilität stark belasteter
Damit lassen sich u.a.
deren laserinduzierte Zerstörschwellen
sowie Absorption und
Degradationsverhalten bei der
präzise ermitteln. Zusätzlich wird
auch die emittierte Strahlung
selbst genau vermessen, u.a.
mit speziellen Hartmann-Shack-
Weiterhin werden kompakte
(Reflektometrie, Diffraktometrie,
chemische Analytik
department of the Laser-Laboratorium
is concerned with the
characterization of laser sources
as well as high quality optics for
beam steering and shaping.
Main focus is put on the deep
UV wavelengths (193 nm,
248 nm) relevant for semiconductor
microlithography. Other
common laser wavelengths are
also accessible.
Various measuring devices for
assessment of the efficiency and
long-term stability of heavily
loaded optical components are
operated. This allows, among
others, at-wavelength determination
of laser-induced damage
thresholds, as well as monitoring
of absorption and degradation
behavior. In addition, the emitted
radiation is precisely characterized
with the help of specially
designed Hartmann-Shack wave
Furthermore, compact EUV /
XUV sources for metrological
applications with soft X-rays are
developed (reflectometry, diffractometry,
Wellenfrontsensor misst Absorption aus
thermischen Linsen
Strahlungsinduzierte thermische Linsen in
optischen Komponenten können bei vielen
Laser-Anwendungen erhebliche Probleme
bereiten. Am LLG wurde nun ein photothermisches
Messsystem zur Bestimmung
der Absorptionsverluste in Laseroptiken
entwickelt. Es basiert auf einem extrem
empfindlichen Hartmann-Shack-Wellenfrontsensor,
der Wellenfront-Änderungen im
Bereich /10.000 nachweisen kann.
Dargestellt ist die photothermische Messung
an einer excimerlaser-bestrahlten
Quarzplatte. Die ebene Wellenfront eines
kollimierten Testlasers ´verbiegt´ sich nach
Einschalten des Excimerlasers innerhalb
weniger Sekunden durch Brechungsindexänderung
sowie thermische Ausdehnung
der Platte. Die Brennweite dieser thermischen
Linse beträgt im gezeigten Beispiel
rund 10 km bei einer Gesamtauslenkung
der Wellenfront von etwa 2 nm.
Die photothermische Messung kann zur
schnellen Bewertung der Qualität optischer
Komponenten eingesetzt werden, da das
Ausmaß der Wellenfrontänderung direkt
proportional zu den thermischen Absorptionsverlusten
ist. Mit dem neuen Verfahren
lassen sich induzierte Wellenfront-Änderungen
durch Zernike-Analyse genau vermessen,
so dass Maßnahmen zur Kompensation
ergriffen werden können.
Das Verfahren wird bereits zur Bewertung
der Qualität von Optiken für die Halbleiterlithografie
eingesetzt, die höchsten Ansprüchen
hinsichtlich Verlustarmut, Langzeitstabilität
und Abbildungsqualität genügen
müssen.
Wavefront Sensor Measures Absorption
from Thermal Lenses
Radiation induced thermal lenses in optical
components can cause significant problems
in many laser applications. Based on an
extremely sensitive Hartmann-Shack wavefront
sensor, a photothermal measurement
system for determining the absorption
losses in laser optics was developed now at
the LLG. Wavefront changes of < /10,000
are detectable.
Bulk and surface absorption of a laserirradiated
optical component lead to a
spatially (and temporally) varying temperature
profile within the material. Due to
thermal expansion as well as change in the
refractive index dn/dT the development of a
wavefront deformation w(r) may be observed
(thermal lensing).
Laser (FEL)
In Kooperation mit DESY/HASYLAB
(Hamburg) wurde ein kompakter Hartmann-
Wellenfrontsensor für weiche Röntgenstrahlung
entwickelt, der an die speziellen
Anforderungen eines Freie-Elektronen-
Lasers (Intensität, Kohärenz, Spektralbereich)
angepasst ist. Der Sensor
verwendet eine Lochmaske vor einem
Intensitäts- und Phasenverteilung. Die Rekonstruktion
und Echtzeit-Zernike-Analyse
der Wellenfront erfolgt mit der hauseigenen
Software MrBeam. Auf diese Weise lassen
sich bei der Feinjustage von Strahlführungs-
optiken einzelne Aberrationsterme gezielt
minimieren.
Das Messsystem wurde an den Freie-
Elektronen-Lasern FLASH (Hamburg) und
LCLS (Stanford) zur Strahl-Charakterisierung
und Justage optischer Elemente
eingesetzt. An der FLASH Beamline BL2
( = 13 nm) konnte so z.B. der rms-Wert der
Wellenfront um mehr als einen Faktor 3 von
9,2 nm auf 2,6 nm reduziert werden.
Da der Sensor gleichzeitig Intensität und
Phase misst, lassen sich durch numerische
Propagation (Fresnel-Kirchhoff) Intensitätsverteilungen
für beliebige Positionen im
Strahlverlauf vorhersagen. Vergleichende
Wavefront Analysis of Free-Electron
Lasers (FEL)
In cooperation with DESY / HASYLAB
(Hamburg) a compact Hartmann wavefront
sensor for soft X-ray radiation was
developed that is adapted to the specialized
needs of free-electron lasers (intensity,
coherence, spectral range). The sensor
uses a pinhole array in front of a coated
CCD chip for the monitoring of intensity and
phase distribution. Wavefront reconstruction
and real-time Zernike analysis is accomplished
with the in-house software MrBeam.
This facilitates fine-tuning of the beam
steering optics by minimization of individual
aberration terms; thus, the focusability of an
FEL can be optimized.
The measurement system was employed at
the free-electron lasers FLASH (Hamburg)
and LCLS (Stanford) for beam characterization
and adjustment of optical elements.
In this way, at FLASH beamline BL2
( = 13 nm) the rms value of the wavefront
could be reduced by more than a factor of
3 from 9.2 nm to 2.6 nm.
Since the sensor records both intensity and
phase, it allows also the prediction of
intensity distributions for any position in the
beam course by numerical propagation
(Fresnel-Kirchhoff). Comparative measurements
with an EUV camera in the focal
KOMET – Higher Laser Cutting Efficiency
with Radially Polarized Light
In response to the rapid growth in the
photovoltaics market, the aim of the project
is to develop a laser that emits radially
polarized light for material processing, and
to evaluate the performance of this laser in
industrial applications.
Up to now, fine cutting of brittle-hard
materials such as silicon has made use of
circularly polarized lasers. In contrast to
linearly polarized radiation, the quality of the
cut does not depend on the cutting
direction, resulting in state-of-the art
industrial cutting quality.
However, for a radially polarized laser beam
the absorption in the material is up to 30 %
higher than for circular polarization, thereby
reducing coupling losses. This allows
significantly higher cutting speeds, or,
alternatively, cutting the same material at
lower laser powers.
Current work is related to the external
conversion of the polarisation state of
linearly polarized lasers with segmented
half-wave plates, as well as intra-cavity
generation of polarized light by conically
shaped laser rods.

EUV/XUV Quelle
Für die Erzeugung kurzwelliger
Strahlung im EUV/
XUV-Bereich werden am
LLG Strahlungsquellen auf
Basis laserproduzierter Plasmen
entwickelt. Dabei
werden als Targets gepulste
Gas-Jets, Flüssig-Jets und
auch Festkörper eingesetzt.
Neben messtechnischen
Anwendungen (Reflektivitäts-
messung an EUV-Optiken,
NEXAFS) wird die Wechselwirkung
zwischen EUV-
Strahlung und Materie untersucht.
Hierfür wurde zur
Erzeugung hoher Energiedichten
bei 13,5 nm ein EUV-
Schwarzschild- Objektiv auf
Basis von Mo/Si-Multilayerspiegeln entwickelt.
Bei Einsatz eines Gold-Festkörpertargets
und geeigneter Strahlformung des
Lasers werden so EUV-Energiedichten von
bis zu 7 J/cm² (1,2 J/cm² gefiltert mit
Zirkonium) im Fokus des Objektives (ca.
4 µm x 2 µm) erreicht. Mit diesem Aufbau
wurde z.B. die Farbzentrenerzeugung in LiF-
Kristallen und die direkte Strukturierung von
Festkörpern untersucht. Bei Polymeren zeigt
sich ein extrem glattes Ablationsprofil,
ebenso wie beim Abtrag von Quarzglas.
Gegenwärtig werden Zerstörschwellentests
an EUV-Optiken (Gold-Schichten, Mo/Si-
Spiegel, Silizium-Wafer) durchgeführt.
EUV/XUV Source
For the generation of shortwavelength
radiation within the
EUV/XUV spectral range
various sources based on
laser-produced plasmas are
being developed. At this,
depending on the application,
gas jets, liquid jets or solid
materials are employed as
laser targets. Besides metrology
(reflecitivity measurement
on EUV optics, NEXAFS)
interaction mechanisms between
soft x-ray radi-ation and
matter are investigated. For
the generation of high energy
densities at 13.5 nm, a EUV-
Schwarzschild objective based
on Mo/Si multilayer mirrors
was developed. Using a solid state gold
laser target in combination with appropriate
laser beam shaping, fluences up to 7 J/cm²
(1.2 J/cm² filtered by Zirconium) could be
generated in the focus of the objective on
an area of 4 µm x 2 µm. With this setup,
the generation of colour centres in LiF
crystals and the direct structuring of
various materials were examined. The
structuring of polymers shows an extremely
smooth ablation morphology. This holds
also for the EUV ablation of fused silica.
Currently damage threshold measurements
are performed on EUV optics (Gold
coatings, Mo/Si multilayer mirrors, silicon).
XUV-Absorptionsspektroskopie
(NEXAFS)
Auf Basis der Laborquelle für kurzwellige
Strahlung wurde ein kompaktes Messsystem
zur Absorptionsspektroskopie im
Wellenlängenbereich des sog. „Wasserfensters“
(λ = 2,2 nm … 4,4 nm) aufgebaut.
Als Quelle wird ein in diesem Bereich
breitbandig emittierendes laser-induziertes
Krypton-Plasma genutzt. Mit dem
nachfolgenden XUV-Spektrometer lässt
sich an dünnen Transmissions-Proben die
Lage der Röntgen-Absorptionskanten
verschiedener Elemente (u.a. C, N, O, Ca,
K, Ti) genau vermessen. Deren Feinstruktur
(NEXAFS = Near Edge X-ray Absorption
Fine Structure) gestattet Aussagen über die
Molekülorbitale, den Oxidationszustand und
die Koordination des absorbierenden
Elements, kann also zur chemischen
Analytik eingesetzt werden. Die NEXAFS-
Spektren verschiedener organischer
Proben (u.a. Polymere, Lipide, Huminstoffe)
zeigen eine sehr gute Übereinstimmung mit
vergleichbaren Synchrotron-Daten (Kooperationen
mit Univ. Göttingen und MPI f. Bio-
Phys. Chemie im SFB 755).
XUV Absorption Spectroscopy (NEXAFS)
A table-top plasma source combined with an
XUV spectrometer is being used for analysis
of the near-edge x-ray absorption fine
structure (= NEXAFS) of thin samples within
the water window, ranging from
λ = 2.2 nm ... 4.4 nm. The fine structure of
the absorption edges yields information on
molecular orbitals, oxidation states and the
coordination of an absorbing element, and
can therefore be applied for chemical
analysis. Due to the high absorption
coefficient of the radiation the technique is
extremely surface sensitive. Single pulse
NEXAFS spectra are obtained from a broadband
Krypton plasma transmitted through a
sample, divided by a reference spectrum
without sample. Data acquired for various
organic samples (polymers, lipids, humic
acids etc.) indicate excellent agreement with
synchrotron measurements (Cooperations
with Univ. Göttingen, MPI f. Bio-Phys.
Chemie, SFB 755).
Eine Herausforderung bei der hochaufgelösten
Laserstrukturierung ist die sorgfältige
Optical Coherence Tomography for Laser
Micro Machining Process Control
A challenge in high resolution laser
machining is the precise adjustment of
samples and online control of parameters
like ablation rate and focus. A suitable
approach for an in situ control is the
integration of an optical coherence
tomography (OCT) module into the microprocessing
system.
OCT is a method for nondestructive, noncontact
and multi-dimensional visualization; it
achieves high-resolution imaging on the
micron level with a high sensitivity and a
large dynamic range. Structures with high
aspect ratio can be measured and imaged.
Furthermore, reliable focusing and tilt
detection of the sample becomes possible.
On balance, the OCT has proven to be
versatile for both surface imaging and
sample alignment.
Laserinduzierter Materialtransfer
Definierte Bereiche dünner Filme können
durch gepulste Laserbestrahlung von einem
transparenten Gebersubstrat (z.B. Quarz)
auf ein Empfängersubstrat (z.B. Kunststoff)
transferiert werden. Befindet sich das
Empfängersubstrat in direktem Kontakt mit
dem zu übertragenden Film, so ist unter
bestimmten Voraussetzungen eine
kongruente Übertragung möglich, d.h. die
Form der ausgeschnittenen Bereiche bleibt
exakt erhalten (CLIFT, congruent laser
induced forward transfer).
Anordnungen wie Punktraster, Gitter und
komplexe Geometrien können durch
geeignete Maskenwahl erzeugt werden.
Durch Ablösung vom Empfängersubstrat
erhält man z.B. freitragende Gitter. Stapel
oder Brückenstrukturen werden mittels
Mehrfachbestrahlung hergestellt. Die
Verwendung von SiOx als Transferfilm
ermöglicht eine nachfolgende Umwandlung
in UV-transparentes SiO2.
Laser Induced Forward Transfer (LIFT)
Defined areas of thin films can be transferred
from a transparent donor substrate
(e.g. quartz) to a receiver substrate (e.g.
polymer) by pulsed laser irradiation.
Direct contact of the film and the receiver
substrate provides congruent transfer, i.e.
the contour of the excised pads is exactly
preserved (CLIFT, congruent laser induced
forward transfer).
Various patterns like spot arrays, grids and
complex geometries are generated by using
appropriate masks. Free standing grids are
obtained by delamination of the patterned
film from the receiver. The fabrication of
stacks or bridges is possible by multiple
exposures. Using SiOx as transfer film
enables the subsequent conversion into
UV-transparent SiO2.
Bereich eignen sie sich für Kontakt- oder so
genannte Proximity-Belichtungen. Mit
Perioden im Bereich 10 µm bis 100 µm sind
sie für verkleinerte Abbildungen geeignet.
(2) Die SiOx-Schicht wird durch Laserablation
Ablation
Phase masks in the form of diffractive
transmission gratings are used for the
generation of periodic laser intensity
patterns. Mask periods in the sub-µm- to
µm-range are mostly applied for contact- or
proximity illumination, while periods in the
range of 10 µm to 100 µm are very useful in
a downsize projection set-up. For example,
phase masks can be used in combination
with suitable imaging optics for high
precision laser micro machining, especially
for the generation of periodic micro- and
nano-structures.
We developed a method for the fabrication
of surface relief SiO2 phase masks in three
steps:
(1) A UV-absorbing coating of silicon
suboxide (SiOx) is deposited on a
fused silica substrate.
(2) The SiOx-coating is patterned by
excimer laser ablation to form the
desired phase structure.
(3) The SiOx-material is oxidized to UVtransparent
silicon dioxide (SiO2).
Elements with F2-Laser Processing
Because of their unique light guiding ability
fibers are essential components for many
applications in photonics. Fused silica fibers
can be efficiently machined with an F2 laser
fabrication of micro lenses on quartz fiber
tips is accomplished using a mask
Using a conformal mask and fiber
displacement the machining of micro lenses
on very large diameter fibers is enabled. In
addition to this processing of the fiber from
the side, using axial illumination and special
geometry masks a variety of shapes can be
fabricated on the fiber tips, e. g. cones, or
gratings, which may be useful for various
applications.
wird jedoch ein erheblicher Anteil des
Fluoreszenzlichts in den Wellenleiter zurück
gekoppelt und dort geführt. Die Koppeleffizienz
hängt dabei von Position,
Umgebung und Orientierung der Moleküle
ab. Die Nutzung dieses rückgekoppelten
Fluoreszenzlichts als Messsignal kann eine
deutliche Vereinfachung der Detektionsoptik
ermöglichen. Durch eine Analyse der
gemessenen Abstrahlcharakteristik lassen
sich theoretische Modelle zur Fluoreszenzabstrahlung
an Grenzflächen überprüfen
und Aussagen über die Orientierung und
Anlagerung der Fluoreszenzmoleküle an
der Oberfläche ableiten.
Fluorescence Coupling into Planar
Waveguides
In present applications of waveguide based
optical biosensors the generated fluorescence
is detected and analyzed with free
space optics positioned above or below the
sensor chip. Due to the vicinity of the
fluorescent molecules to the interface of the
waveguide layer, a substantial part of the
fluorescence light is coupled back into and
collected by the waveguide. The coupling
efficiency depends on position, environment
and orientation of the molecules. The
utilization of this signal for fluorescence
detection and analysis can allow a
significant simplification of the optical
instrumentation. An analysis of the
measured power distribution provides a
validation of a theoretical model on the
dipole emission near interfaces and yields
information about molecule orientation and
position at the waveguide surface.
Photonische Sensorik
Photonic Sensor Technologies
Wissenschaftler bezeichnen
unser Zeitalter als "Das Jahrhundert
des Photons".
Dies wird mit den enormen
Fortschritten im Bereich der
photonischen Technologien und
deren Bedeutung für Mensch
und Gesellschaft begründet.
Qualtitätskontrolle und spektroskopische
Erkennung von Krankheiten
sind Beispiele für ihren
weit reichenden Einsatz.
Die Abteilung „Photonische
Entwicklung neuartiger optischer
Messverfahren, überwiegend
basierend auf Raman-Streuung,
IR-Absorption und Fluoreszenz-
Emission, häufig in Kombination
mit chemometrischen Methoden.
Die Stärken dieser Sensorverfahren
liegen hierbei in der
zerstörungsfreien, berührungslosen
und direkten Messung und
Analyse von Substanzen,
Systemen, Prozessen und
Produkten.
Dabei geht es vor allem in
unserer Arbeitsgruppe um die
Einbindung der photonischen
Sensorik in Bereiche wie
Mikrofluidik, Motordiagnostik,
Bio- und Umweltanalytik sowie
Sicherheits- und Prozesstechnik.
Scientists call our age the
„Century of the Photon”.
This is caused by the enormous
progress in the field of photonic
technologies and its meaning for
humans and society.
Quality control and spectroscopic
diagnosis of diseases are
examples for its far-reaching
applications. The department
“Photonic Sensor Technologies”
devotes their research on the
development of novel innovative
optical measurement procedures
mainly based on Raman
scattering, IR absorption and
fluorescence emission combined
with chemotric analysis. The
strengths of these methods are
non-destructive, contact-free,
fast and direct measurements of
processes, systems, products
and substances.
The aim of our department is
mainly the implementation of
photonic sensor technologies in
fields like microfluidics, engine
combustion diagnosis, bio- and
environmental analytics as well
as security and process technology.
Photonic Sensor Technologies
Substrate zur oberflächenverstärkten
Ramanspektroskopie
Auf dem Gebiet der Bioanalytik hat sich in
den letzten Jahren die Ramanspektroskopie
immer weiter etabliert. Hierbei wird die
Wechselwirkung monochromatischer Strahlung
mit Moleküleigenschwingungen ausgenutzt.
Diese führt zu charakteristischen,
molekülspezifischen Banden im Streulichtspektrum,
die einen „fingerprint“ des Moleküls
darstellen. Somit erlaubt die Ramanspektroskopie
einen direkten speziesselektiven
Nachweis und bietet einen hohen
Informationsgehalt über die jeweilige
Molekülstruktur.
Die Detektion einer geringen Anzahl von
Molekülen stellt allerdings eine große Herausforderung
dar, da der Ramanstreuprozess
naturgemäß sehr lichtschwach ist. Aus
diesem Grund werden nanostrukturierte
Edelmetalloberflächen eingesetzt, die zu
einer Verstärkung des Ramanstreulichtes in
den Größenordnungen von bis zu 10 14
führen können.
Derzeit werden am LLG Untersuchungen
auf dem Gebiet der oberflächenverstärkten
Ramanspektroskopie durchgeführt und eigens
dafür ein Verfahren zur Herstellung
ramanstreulichtverstärkender Substrate
entwickelt. Diese führen zu einer 10 6 -fachen
Verstärkung und werden unter anderem in
Mikrokanäle zum Nachweis von medizinisch
relevanten Substanzen in wässrigen
Lösungen integriert.
Ein anderes Anwendungsgebiet ist die Detektion
von Sprengstoffen.
Substrates for Surface-Enhanced Raman
Spectroscopy
In the field of bioanalytics, Raman spectroscopy
becomes more and more popular. The
interaction between monochromatic light
and the natural vibrations of molecule
results in specific Raman bands in the
scattered light spectrum which represents a
“finger-print” of the molecule. Therefore
Raman spectroscopy is suitable for the
direct and species selective detection of
molecules and their structures.
The detection of small amounts of molecules
is challenging when using Raman
spectroscopy because of the intrinsic
“weakness“ of the Raman effect. Therefore
metallic nanostructured surfaces are used
to provide huge Raman signal enhancement
in the order of 10 14
Currently, there are a lot of investigations
on the field of surface-enhanced Raman
spectroscopy (SERS) at the LLG. For this
purpose a novel fabrication technique for
SERS-active substrates is developed.
These substrates provide a signal enhancement
in the order of 10 6 and offer a
way to detect micropollutants in aqueous
solutions by the integration into microfluidic
components also realized at the LLG.
Other applications are the detection of
explosives and the monitoring of biomedical
substances (e.g. proteins).
Ramanspektroskopie in Kombination mit der
Frei-Fluss-Elektrophorese (FFE) kontinuierliches
entwickelt. Aktueller Fokus des
Forschungsvorhabens ist die Überwachung
der Proteinproduktion für pharmazeutische
Anwendungen (Abb. unten).
In der Ramanspektroskopie wird die inelastische
Streuung von monochromatisch
beleuchteten Proben untersucht. Bei der
Untersuchung komplexer Gemische führt
das gleichzeitige Vorhandensein zahlreicher
verschiedener Substanzen zu vielfältigen
spektralen Überlagerungen und Querempfindlichkeiten.
Dieser Problematik wird
mit elektrophoretischen Separations- und
Anreicherungsverfahren begegnet. Hier
werden die Gemische mit Hilfe eines
elektrischen Feldes aufgetrennt (Abb. auf
der nächsten Seite).
Novel Analysis and Process Control Technology
with Cross-Sectional Character
In the LLG, a continuous online analysis
method is developed: Raman Spectroscopy
in combination with free-flow-electrophoresis
(FFE) is used for the detection and
quantitative analysis of the substances of
fluid mixtures as well as the monitoring of
chemical and biological production and
cleaning processes. It is as well used for
medical diagnostics. The research project
focuses on the monitoring of protein
fabrication for pharmaceutical applications
(see fig. below).
Schematische Darstellung des Forschungsvorhabens - Scheme of the research project
The Raman Spectroscopy analyses the
inelastic scattering of monochromatic
illuminated samples. This simultaneous
existence of a multitude of various substances
leads to a spectral overlap and
interference errors. This set of problems is
countered by electrophoretic separation and
accumulation methods in which mixtures are
separated by an electro-magnetic field (see
fig. on the next page).

Explosivstoffdetektion mit oberflächenverstärkter
Ramanstreuung
Der Nachweis von geringsten Spuren
explosiven Materials ist eine wichtige Aufgabe
in der Sicherheitspolitik geworden, wie
die Attentate von Madrid und London
beweisen. Der verwendete Sprengstoff, Triacetontriperoxid
(TATP), lässt sich relativ
leicht mit haushaltsüblichen Chemikalien
herstellen. Bis heute gibt es keine verlässliche
Detektionsmethode für TATP.
Allgemeine Voraussetzungen für die Entdeckung
von Sprengstoffen sind schnelles
Detektieren, Selektivität, hohe Empfindlichkeit
und robuste Messsysteme. Die SER
Spektroskopie wird diesen Anforderungen
gerecht. Trotz der Vorteile hat es bis dato
kein auf SER-Spektroskopie basierendes
Detektionsverfahren zur Marktreife
gebracht.
Wir haben ein System entwickelt, das aus
drei Modulen besteht: 1) Anreicherung; 2)
Analyse; 3) Erkennung. Im ersten Modul
wird die eingeschlossene Luft durch
thermische Desorption angereichert. Anschließend
fließt der Analyt in das Analyse-
Modul und adsorbiert auf dem gekühlten
SERS Substrat, um durch SER-Spektroskopie
detektiert zu werden. Neben dem
Nachweis von TATP wurde die
Zusammensetzung von aromatischen Nitroverbindungen
wegen ihrer Ähnlichkeit zu
Trinitrotoluol (TNT) studiert, um mögliche
Fehlalarme der Detektionssysteme zu
verhindern.
Explosive Detection by Surface
Enhanced Raman Scattering
The detection of trace amounts of explosive
materials is an important task for National
Security and Homeland Defence, as
witnessed by the bombings from Madrid
and London. The explosive in the bombings
mentioned above is believed to be
triacetone triperoxide (TATP), which is
relatively easy to synthesize from available
chemicals. Today, there is no accurate
method available to detect TATP outside
the laboratory. In general, the requirements
for the detection of explosives are a fast
detection, high sensitivity and selectivity as
well as robust measurement systems.
The potential of SER spectroscopy for trace
detection of explosives has been explored
in the LLG. Despite of the advantages, a
detection system based on SER spectroscopy
has not conquered the marked yet.
We have constructed a modular detection
system, consisting of three units:
1) enrichment; 2) analysis; 3) detection. In
the first module, the gases are enriched by
thermal desorption. The released analyte
flows into the analysis unit. There, the
gaseous analyte resublimates on the
coated substrate. The adsorbed molecules
are detected by SER-spectroscopy.
Besides TATP detection, we have also
studied musk-like fragrance compounds by
SERS which can accident-ally initiate false
alarm due to their molecular similarity to
trinitro toluene (TNT).
eingesetzt.
Die aktive Forschung ist auf die
Gemischbildung in Verbrennungsmotoren
ausgerichtet. Um die Gemischbildung zu
charakterisieren, werden die physikalischen
Größen Temperatur, Speziesverteilung und
Grundlegende Untersuchungen zur Entwicklung
von Mess-Strategien finden in
erfolgen spektrale Analysen unter anderem
mit einem FTIR-Spektrometer und dem im
LLG entwickelten Fluorimeter.
Die spektralen Eigenschaften der Komponenten
können somit vom mittleren
infraroten bis hin zum ultravioletten Wellenlängenbereich
untersucht werden. An
Versuchsmotoren kommen faseroptische
Zündkerzensensoren, wie in der Abbildung
rechts dargestellt, zum Einsatz. Außerdem
kann über optische Fenster am Zylinder die
flächige Kraftstoff/Luft-Verteilung (Abb.
oben) mittels Laser-Lichtschnitt Verfahren
ermittelt werden, indem das Fluoreszenzlicht
von angeregten Kraftstoffmolekülen
Combustion Diagnostics
Laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) and
infrared absorption are used in the field of
combustion diagnostics in our department.
The current research is focused on the
mixture formation in internal combustion
engines. To characterize the mixture formation,
the physical parameters temperature,
species distribution and flow fields are
observed.
Fundamental investigations for developing
measurement strategies are performed in
optical cells. Spectral analysis, just to give
an example, is made by using a FTIRspectrometer
and a fluorimeter which was
developed and assembled in the LLG.
Thus, the spectral properties of the
components can be analyzed in the range
from the middle infrared to the ultraviolet
wavelength range. Fiberoptical spark-plug
sensors, shown in the figure above, are
used in research engines for analysis.
Furthermore, the fuel-air ratio can be
observed through optical windows (fig. on
the left) using planar laser light-sheet
techniques in the combustion chamber by
detecting fluorescence light from the exited
fuel molecules.
Die Änderungen in den
Natur.
Nahinfrarotmesssystemen oft viele Proben
notwendig, um mit deren Spektren aufwändige
Solche Kalibrationen sind sehr teuer, so
dass Transferalgorithmen, die Temperaturveränderungen
so die Zahl der nötigen Messungen
verringern, hoch willkommen sind.
Compensation of Temperature-Influence
to Near Infrared Diffuse Reflection Spectroscopy
Near Infrared Spectra detected on solid
state powders depends on temperature
(influence of van der Waals-Forces, especially
hydrogen bonds, rearrangements and
the population of energy levels). As a result
of the various temperature depending
factors the variation in the spectrum is fairly
complicated.
Near infrared spectroscopy is often used for
non-destructive and non-contact determination
of analyte contents like moisture or
protein. Differing temperatures result in
negative influence to the performance of
the analysis. Because of the huge overlap
of the bands, near infrared systems often
do need huge amounts of samples to
create complex calibration models with their
spectra. Such calibrations are very
expensive, which makes calibration transfer
algorithms to compensate temperature
changes highly welcome.
Kaltes Laser- und Plasmasintersystem
Dieses System stellt ein weltweit einmaliges
Gerät dar, welches ganz neue Bearbeitungswege
und -ergebnisse erwarten
lässt. Das System ermöglicht erstmals
lösemittelfreie (VOC-freie) und damit
umweltschonende Direktsinterprozesse mit
verschiedensten Nanopulvern (Metall,
Kunststoff, Keramik und Legierungen).
Aufgrund des "kalten" Atmosphärendruckplasmas
lassen sich präzise strukturierte
Schichten hoher Widerstandsfähigkeit,
Temperaturbeständigkeit und guter Haftung
auch auf temperaturempfindlichen Oberflächen
mit hohen Abscheideraten (10 µm
@ 1 m/min) aufbringen. So können beispielsweise
Solarzellen metallisiert oder
flexible Leiterplatten, Dünnschicht-Batterien
oder Membranen für Brennstoffzellen hergestellt
werden.
Unter zusätzlicher Verwendung eines
Lasersystems während des Plasmabeschichtens
können durch gezielte
Laserablation neuartige Phasenelemente
(z.B. diffraktive Optiken) hergestellt werden.
Der gezielte Einsatz der Laser-Plasma-
Kombination kann sich desweiteren positiv
auf Kristallisationsvorgänge z. B. in
Halbleitern auswirken.
48
Cold Laser Plasma Sinter System
The cold laser plasma sinter system is a
novel and unique peace of technology.
Innovative treatments and solution ways
can be expected, for the system is the first
to enable dissolvent-free (VOC-free) and
therefore environmentally friendly direct
sinter processes with different nanopowder
(metal, plastics, ceramics and alloys). Due
to the “cold” atmospheric pressure plasma,
precisely structured coats with high
resistivity, temperature stability and good
adhesion can be brought to temperature
sensitive with high deposition rates (10 µm
@ 1 m/min). To give some examples, solar
cells can be metalized and it is possible to
manufacture flexible conductor plates, thin
film batteries and membranes for fuel cells.
In combination with a laser system during
the plasma coating, new phase elements
can be generated with laser ablation (for
example diffractive optics). The systematic
use of the laser plasma combination has a
very good influence on actions like the
crystallization in semi conductors.
Qualitätssteigerung von OWI-Thermoformholz®
durch Plasmabehandlung
Durch eine thermische Modifizierung von
heimischem Buchenholz wird die Nutzbarkeit
des ökoeffizienten Materials für den
Außeneinsatz verbessert, da die Haltbarkeit
durch reduzierte Wasseraufnahme steigt.
Durch diese Behandlung werden aber auch
Tränkbarkeit und Verleimbarkeit des Holzes
nachteilig beeinflusst. Als Folge benötigen
die verwendeten Thermo-Buchenfurniere
sehr lange Tränkzeiten in einem Melamin-
Bad. Hohe Verleimfestigkeit kann nicht
gewährleistet werden; diese Probleme
stehen auch einer Automatisierung der
Produktion und entgegen.
Ziel dieses Projektes ist, durch eine
Plasmabehandlung unter Atmosphärendruck,
eine deutliche Reduzierung der
benötigten Tränkzeiten zu erreichen.
Hierdurch können Takt- und Prozesszeiten
erheblich verkürzt werden und es besteht
die Möglichkeit zur vollständigen Automatisierung
der Produktion. Dadurch wird die
Voraussetzung zur industriellen Fertigung
bei hoher Produktivität und Wirtschaftlichkeit
geschaffen.
Atmospheric plasma treatment of wood for an
increased usability of the product outside
Quality Increase of OWI Thermoform
Wood® with Plasma Technology
The thermal modification of domestic grown
beech wood enables a longer time of wood
usage outdoors because of a lower
absorption of water. A huge disadvantage
of this method is the lower wood treatability
and gluability emerging after the thermal
process. This leads to a long treatment time
of the wood veneer in a melamine bath. A
better gluability cannot be ensured; this is
why the production process of the ecoefficient
product has not been automated
yet.
The LLG project aims to reach an explicit
decrease of the wood treatment time in the
bath with the atmospheric plasma treatment.
Cycle time and process duration can be
considerably reduced this way, so a
complete automation of the production
process is possible. With this important
step, the conditions for a fully automated
industrial manufacturing with huge
economic potential are accomplished.
Plasmamedizin
Die Plasmamedizin ist ein interdisziplinärer
Zweig der Plasmatechnologie, der sich
innerhalb der letzten Jahre als ein eigenständiges
Forschungsgebiet etabliert hat.
Die plasma-medizinische Entwicklung ist
ausgerichtet auf dermatologische Anwendungen
wie z.B. die Autoimmunerkrankung
Neurodermitis.
Dabei steht die topische, schmerzfreie
Behandlung der Haut mit netzunabhängigen
Plasmaquellen im Fokus. Die wesentlichen
Wirkmechanismen setzen sich zusammen
aus einer Applikation von geringem
elektrischen Stromfluss, geringer Dosis an
UV-Strahlung (UV-Therapie) sowie der
Wechselwirkung im Plasma gebildeter
reaktiver Gasspezies wie O3 und NOx mit der
Hautoberfläche. Gerade der letztgenannte
Mechanismus hat eine temporäre Einsäuerung
der Hautoberfläche zur Folge. Die
Wechselwirkung der einzelnen Plasmakomponenten
mit eukaryotischen wie auch
prokaryotischen Zellen sowie den Bestandteilen
des Hydro-Lipid-Films oberhalb dieser
Zelllagen ist noch nicht eindeutig geklärt.
Deshalb sind zurzeit weltweit Forschungsprojekte
darauf ausgelegt, zu einem differenzierten
Gesamtbild der plasmamedizinischen
Wirkungsmechanismen beizutragen.
Plasma Medicine
Plasma medicine is an interdisciplinary
sector of the plasma technology. In the past
years, it has developed to an independent
research field. The plasma medical
research and development focuses on a
dermatological use of the technology, for
example in the treatment of immune
mediated diseases like neurodermatitis.
The topical, analgize treatment of the
human skin with mobile plasma sources is
the main research aspect here.
The main mechanisms of action are
composed of an application of low current
flow, a low dose of UV radiation (UV
therapy) as well as the interaction of
gaseous species accumulated in plasma,
like O3 and NOx, with the human skin
surface. Mainly this mechanism entails a
temporary deacidification. A final definition
for the interaction of the single plasma
components with eucaryal as well as
prokaryal cells and the parts of the hydrolipid
film above these cell layers was not
found yet, so scientists all over the world
work in projects in the moment to find a key
to a more differentiated overall picture for
the plasma medical mechanisms of action.

Laser Plasma Hybridtechnology
Plasmastrahlungsquellen
Durch die Kombination von zwei etablierten
Verfahren zur Erzeugung von Strahlung im
extrem ultravioletten Spektralbereich bis hin
zur Erzeugung von weicher Röntgenstrahlung
sollen neuartige, kompakte
Systeme, sog. „table-top-Systeme“, hoher
Brillanz geschaffen werden. Hierbei werden
die Vorteile eines Pinchplasmas in
Kombination mit einer Laserpulsaufheizung
ausgenutzt, um eine derartige Strahlungsquelle
zu erzeugen.
Voruntersuchungen haben gezeigt, dass es
möglich ist, Pinchplasmen als Absorptionsmedium
für kurze Laserpulse zu
verwenden.
Plasma Radiation Sources
With the combination of two wellestablished
methods for the generation of
radiation in the extreme UV spectral range
up to the generation of soft X-rays, novel
compact systems, so called “table-top
systems with a huge brilliancy are to be
built.
For this purpose, the advantages of a laser
pulse heated pinch-plasma are used.
First tests have shown that it is possible to
use a pinch plasma as an absorption
medium for short laser pulses. Simulations
and measurements show that the effect on
the plasma is strongly dependent of the
point in time when the laser pulse enters
the plasma.
This project aims to increase the
fundamental basis knowledge of the
absorption mechanism of short laser pulses
in pinch plasma and the effect of the laser
pulse duration and accordingly the time
delay between the laser pulse to the pinch
point.
MuT-Kongres (Foto: Sliwonik/PZH)
The Laser-Laboratory in Göttingen was an exhibitor at this year‟s “IdeenExpo”, an exhibition
designed for young people to get in touch with science and scientific vocational fields. The
exhibition takes place from September 5 to September 13, 2209, in the German town Hannover.
The LLG shows actual scientific work concerning laser engraving technology, plasma treatment
of nail polish and environmental water analysis.
Mädchen-und-Technik-Kongress
Hannover, 11.11.2009,
„Innovationen brauchen MuT – Mädchen und Technik!“ This slogan of the Congress for Girls
and Technology in Hannover, Germany, is intentionally playing with the German word for
courage, “Mut”, in combining the capital Letters of Mädchen und Technik. Innovation needs
courage, girls and technology, does it say. Prof. Viöl was the project leader of “High-tension
Fingernails” where the girls worked out how to avoid their pet peeve, peeling nail polish, with a
novel plasma technology.
LLG GmbH
Unsere Produkte
Methoden anzubieten. Ein Beispiel hierfür ist
die Plasma-Behandlung von Holz und
Holzwerkstoffen, eine industriell bewährte
Technologie, die in der Regel ohne großen
Aufwand in bestehende Produktionslinien
Produkt.
Weitere Aufträge von Forschungsinstituten
der Region, Deutschland und weltweit
ansässigen Industriepartnern sicherten den
Fortbestand der LLG GmbH.
Our Products
The LLG GmbH focuses on a constant
enhancement and advancement of its
product range to ensure future oriented
gadgets and services.
Accordingly to the current range of
products, implying for example table-top
EUV sources and UV-fs laser systems, the
new TruMark engraving laser enables us to
generate customized deep, detailed colored
engravings even on small surfaces of many
different materials.
The new LLG department Laser Plasma
Hybrid Technology brings new possibilities
for gadgets and services which are offered
in our company since spring 2009.
A good example is the plasma treatment of
wood and derived timber products, a
technique which did already prove its worth
in the industrial production. It can easily be
integrated in existing production lines and
can be used, just to give an example, to
considerably increase the product durability.
The close cooperation between the LLG
GmbH and the LLG e. V. enabled us to
successfully finish a UV-fs-KrF amplifier
system with specialized changes for
international customers.
Other orders from local companies, German
research institutes and industrial partners
all over the world assured the continuance
of the LLG GmbH.
