PRECAUTIONS FOR COAXIAL LASER DIODE MODULE

L PRECAUTION FOR SAFETY

Warning: The laser light emitted from the optical fiber end or

the edge of the receptacle is invisible and will be

hazardous to human eyes.

Avoid looking into the optical fiberor the receptacle,

when the device is operated.

1) The laser diode modules are used as an optical source in the data transmission

modules, and operated at certain bit rate in digital signal form. These modules

should be operated after connecting with the fiber, which is used for a medium of

optical signal.

2) In viewing the laser beam, we strongly recommend to use infrared-to-visible

converter, such as fluorescent screen or TV camera.

3) Operating the laser diode module outside of its absolute maxinium ratings may

cause device failure or a safety hazard.

4) Do not open the housing.

5) Do not pull or bend the optical fiber strongly.

6) We recommend incorporating a fail-safe function in the transmitter, such as a LD

disabhng function.

7) A "Warning Label", an "Aperture Label", and an "Identification and Certification

Label", which depict the laser radiation classification, the output power, the

wavelength, and the radiation direction, are attached to the individual laser diode

container. (Fig. 1, 2, and 3)

2, PRECAUTION FOR OPERATING

1) Electrical precautions

The device shall be handled as an electrostatic sensitive device. For the purpose

of avoiding electrical static damage, lead pins are shorted by using an electrically

conductive material. In removing the device out of the container, appropriate

precautions against the damage, such as a wristband with ground cord, must be

taken. The relative humidity should be maintained above 20 percents because

that can reduce the risk of damage due to static electricity. These precautions

apply to the storage, transport, handling and testing of the device.

2) Handling precautions

Increasing junction temperature of the laser diode contained in the device may

degrade the device. For the purpose of reducing the degradation, the driving

current should not go over the specified LD forward current (Ifmax).

3) Mechanical precautions

The attached optical fiber is subject to breakage if mishandled. Do not pull the

device by the fiber. Do not coil the fiber into a loop of less than 60 millimeters in

diameter.

4) Thermal precautions

The operation of the laser module at temperatures higher than specified Tc will

cause a rapid degradation.

The soldering time should be less than 10 seconds at temperature below 260-C.

5) Operating precautions

The output power varies in terms of the operating temperature. We recommend

maintaining the operating current and the bias current depending on the

operating temperature in order to avoid excess laser radiation.
