the booking confirmation from your favourite hotel,
the new skis on the roof of your car, or the receptionist’s
GOOD NEWS
IN EIGENER SACHE
Good News on our own behalf
dt.
ausschreibt, kürte uns zum „Winner of Excellent
Communications Design – Editorial“.
– weiterzugehen.
engl. / We are thrilled to share the most
wonderful news with you, dear readers –
La Loupe won a German Design Award 2020!
The international jury of this renowned design
competition which is organised by the
German Design Council for excellent design
ideas awarded us the prize in the category
“Winner of Excellent Communications Design –
Editorial”.
The jury’s reasoning: “Its original title illustration
immediately makes this elaborately made
and extremely stylish pocket-magazine stand
out from the masses. The content convinces with
informative texts and appealing, high-quality
photographs, combined with a well-structured
and readerfriendly layout. The pouch for
packaging is a beautiful detail.”
With the firm belief that information can be beautiful, too,
I had precise ideas as to what criteria a (my) magazine would
have to meet when I planned the first edition of La Loupe in
2011. It was supposed to delight, inform, and entertain the
readers and be a work tool for hotels & restaurants at the
same time. An interface between guest and destination, as a
print magazine with a strong digital presence. With Julia I not
only found my “one”, I also found a congenial partner for
developing La Loupe further, making it more user-friendly
and making sure it met the highest standards in terms of both
content and design. As an art historian Julia brings a trained
eye for content and design to the table and a special sense for
colours; the Golden Ratio is sacred to her.
With La Loupe - “the magnifying glass” - we want to take a
close look at and get people interested in the people and stories
that make the individual locations what they are. Each
magazine contains well-researched stories and fascinating
interviews with selected personalities. The cover illustration
is cheerful and surreal, and it reflects the contents of every
edition. It stands for fashion, art, and our personal taste for
beautiful and elegant design. We love to travel and find inspiration
in wonderful places and encounters. With open eyes
and hearts we put together a collection of everything that’s
special about a destination which then flows into La Loupe to
be useful and entertaining to the readers.
The German Design Award 2020 fills us with a deep sense of
gratitude. And it is affirmation and motivation to stay on our
path – together with a team that is just as passionate about
good quality as we are.
junge Berlinerin Leni (Leni Riefenstahl) bringt ihren Skilehrer
38
Der schwarze Blitz (1958)
Der Kunsttischler und Casanova
Michael Kirchner ist das Ski-Ass
seines Heimatortes St. Florian. Nach
einem Jahr trifft er Uschi, die Tochter
eines Skifabrikanten, wieder, mit der
er damals angebandelt hatte. Gleichzeitig
Konkurrenz vom ehemaligen Skistar
– which, without a doubt, is one of Austria’s
most renowned ski resorts – Austrian tradition
is mixed with international flair and this mix
is crowned by stunning natural surroundings.
As a film set St. Anton am Arlberg has seen
plenty of drama, adventure, love, and friendship
and with its magical mountainous
landscape it ensures special film experiences,
both for fans of the holiday region and for
those who are yet to get to know the area.
And because TV and cinema productions
are so common around here, an annual
film festival takes place to pay tribute to this
stunning film set. La Loupe takes a peek back
stage and presents six movies that were filmed
entirely or partly in St. Anton am Arlberg.
The White Extasy (1931)
This comedy is among the most well-known films ever
shot on Arlberg and it is the first skiing movie with sound.
With her klutziness young Leni from Berlin (Leni Riefenstahl)
drives skiing instructor Hannes (Hannes Schneider)
nuts. But she has her mind set on one thing: with Hannes’
help she wants to participate in a beginners’ ski race –
and win it, too. The film was produced by Arnold Fanck
and the landscape shots and skiing scenes from St. Anton
delighted so many cinemagoers it made the Arlberg a
place of longing over night. The revolutionary filming
technique, impressive jumps, choreographies, and thrilling
races did their part in making the film a classic.
The scenes depicting the mass-start of the Weisser Rausch
ski-race on Vallugagrat are particularly impressive – and
today the legendary ski race which takes almost ten
minutes still is one of the longest in the world.
Magazin
The Arlberg Witch
(1953/54 and 1999)
This film by the Danish
director Finn Antoft creates
magical moments featuring
young Karl Schranz. A witch
(Toni Marth) has snuck into
the ski school business in
St. Anton and introduces
young talents to the sport
with a lot of humour. But,
of course, there can’t be a
witch on Arlberg, which is
why a wild chase through
powder snow follows, complete
with acrobatic stunts. Numerous skiing instructors
from St. Anton were hired for the skiing scenes.
Unfortunately the film remained unfinished and only
in 1999 did the director’s family have it newly cut,
new sound added and presented it to the public at
the St. Anton film festival. 41
The Black Lightning (1958)
Cabinetmaker and casanova Michael Kirchner is the top
skier in his home village St. Florian. A year after first flirting
with her, he meets Uschi, a ski maker’s daughter, again. At
the same time he tries to conquer hotel secretary Gretl. On
the slopes Michael, who wants to qualify for the national
team, finds a competitor in former ski star Herbert Thanner,
whose home-made special wax he is said to have stolen. In
the end all is well and Michael wins the big ski race. A Happy
End that truly impressed viewers and made St. Anton a
pilgrimage site for lovers of the sport – also thanks to the
commitment of three-time Olympic Champion in Cortina
d’Ampezzo 1956, the “Black Lightning” himself, Toni Sailer.
The Double Man (1967)
It makes you wonder: did James Bond director Sam Mendes
find his inspiration for sending Daniel Craig down icy slopes
in this film?! The spy thriller by director Franklin J. Schaffner
sends CIA agent Dan Slater to St. Anton, to attend his
son’s funeral after a deadly accident in the Alps. He investigates
his son’s death and finds out he was murdered. Hints
conveniently provided by the attractive Gina make him
think he might be on the right track to discover the killers –
not knowing that he’s doing exactly what he was expected
to and thus falls into the trap that was set for him. The film
was shot on both sides of the Arlberg and depicts the early
forms of mass ski-tourism.
vom örtlichen Ski-Club Arlberg bereits rege genutzt. Als
Besonderheit gelten die geführten Bergtouren mit E-Trials.
So bietet Willi Mathies jr. zwei Rundfahrten ins Gelände mit
Guide an (ab 12 Jahren).

e-bike trial rides in the mountains
around Arlberg. At the focus: dexterity,
coordination, and lots of action.
Magazin
Body control, courage, and concentration combined with
outdoor fun and adventure – that’s what Willi Mathies junior’s
electro trial-park in Stuben is all about. The cool attraction
promises amazing motorsports challenges without the noise
and exhaust gases. Over hills, ramps, boulders, steps, and
other exciting obstacles the electric bikes carry their riders –
not only are the e-bikes lighter than fuel-powered bikes, but
because of the electric motor there also is no risk of burns
for children. Kids aged 7 years or older can explore the parcour
with their e-trial bikes and learn the art of motorbiking
in an easy and fun way. Grown-ups can not just look forward
to fun but because of the more challenging elements it
also is a perfect way to hone one’s driving skills.
68
Fun-balance-exercise
Trial riding has its origins in Great Britian. The idea is to master
difficult terrain slowly and without errors while standing
on one’s bike. Stopping, pushing, or propping oneself up, even
if it just means putting one’s foot down briefly, is an error.
Staying calm and relaxed, manoeuvering the bike with precision,
always keeping one’s balance, and exact motor coordination
are the key for successfully getting through Vorarlberg’s
first trial parcour. And it’s located in the most
wonderful spot: in the middle of stunning natural surroundings
at the foot of Arlberg pass. The skills acquired on the trial
course, the sense of balance, and the concentration training
come in quite handy while skiing, too. Which is why
e-trialling is a popular alternative during the Ski World Cup
athlete’s training – the local skiing association SCA has been
making good use of the facilities.
And guided mountain tours on e-trial bikes are a very special
experience. Mathies offers two different guided tours through
the terrain (for kids aged 12 or older). The routes used for the
tours include forest roads and ski slopes. The guided tours always
lead towards Albona – so from Suben either over Rauztobel
towards Valfagehr or over the connecting slope “Passage”
down the hill. Before the start of the tour there’s a short
intro to e-trial riding and a “warm-up” on the trial park that
takes about 15 minutes. In future driving technique courses
will also be offered, as will season passes for locals, staggered
according to bike size. In order to further promote the scene,
Willi Mathies jun. intends to organise a tournament. The conditions
are ideal since the e-trial park is located right by the
road and because of its former life as a leisure centre it has a
large parking lot.
BERGFOTOGRAFIE
MIT GESCHICHTE
Unique mountain photography with history

Foundation Friends of Hannes Schneider erschien
the Heimhuber family’s historic photographs
are visual testimony of times gone by, of the
popular image of the mountains and the change
it has gone through over the course of the years.
As part of a special project in Stuben am Arlberg
they are now made accessible to a broader
public for the first time.
Mountain photography is closely connected to the emerging
alpine tourism. The photographs from the beginnings of alpine
tourism found a new target group in hikers and all those
interested in the Alps; in many cases they were even taken
according to their wishes. The passionate photographer, avid
mountaineer, and fan of winter sports, Eugen Heimhuber,
was a pioneer in this area. He didn’t just take pictures
for his buyers though, in hundreds of thousands of
photographs he also documented his deep, traditional
roots in the mountains as well as this peculiar region.
The results include impressive mountain and lanscape
photographs of the regions around Arlberg, Flexen,
and Hochtannberg Pass which he usually took during
his mountain and ski tours. They date back to the time
before WWI and the interwar period. A historic treasure,
which, because of its topic and dimension, was
particularly suitable for the funded interreg-project –
the creation of a virtual historic forum with aspects of
winter sports in the respective regions. The association
Foundation Friends of Hannes Schneider has tackled
the editing of the Heimhuber family’s photographs in
this context.
The open-air exhibition with motifs from the Heimhuber
winter season. Large-format pictures with illustrative
information and matching literary quotes invite all
those who are interested to dive into the 140-year history
of the entire village. In Warth and Hochkrumbach
the motifs from the Heimhuber archive create
the ideal framework for making the development of
On the initiative of the Foundation Friends of Hannes
taken by mountaineer and landscape photographer
