Discription:
Author John Diamond was caught in the crossfire of a scandal. As the University of Arkansas's
chief public relations official, he had learned a longtime employee in the university's fundraising
division had mismanaged millions of dollars. Worse, it appeared she had deliberately masked her
actions to avoid detection. In a private email, popular UA Chancellor G. David Gearhart described
the situation as a colossal fiscal crisis. Diamond encouraged Gearhart, his boss, to publicly
disclose what happened as well as the corrective and disciplinary actions he was taking. Doing so
would honor Gearhart's oft-repeated promise of transparency and accountability for the people of
Arkansas. But to Diamond's surprise, Gearhart rejected transparency and disclosure. And when
word of the employee's misconduct leaked to the news media, Gearhart and other top UA officials
abandoned accountability as well. They fought reporters' attempts to access public documents
that would have shed light on the employee's actions--and on who else might have been culpable.
As time passed, Diamond objected, privately and through proper channels, to his superiors'
unethical behavior and misleading responses to reporters. Days later, he was abruptly fired -- by
text message. His termination sparked media and public outrage, and led to dramatic investigative
hearings into mismanagement at UA, with Diamond as a key witness. The investigation concluded
with a number of stunning -- and embarrassing -- outcomes. Diamond's narrative provides a
powerful expose revealing how leaders' hubris ignited an avoidable scandal and, in the process,
tarnished the university's reputation as well as their own. Diamond's story is a cautionary tale
about surviving a scandal with one's integrity and reputation intact.
