born in 1943, is a psychiatrist, researcher, and educator. He is presently a professor of Psychiatry
at the Boston University School of Medicine. He is located in Boston, MA, where he has spent
most of his training, education, and career. His specialty is PTSD and, of course, this book has
made him famous for being notable as such. He is the founder and former medical director of the
Trauma Center at the Justice Resource Institute or JRI, also in Massachusetts, and a cofounder of
the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. He has spent decades working with trauma
survivors, from combat veterans to sexual abuse victims and others. His forward thinking has
made a generation of psychiatrists change the way they view and treat their trauma patients. He
has a website, www.besselvanderkolk.com, which provides a free newsletter and educates the
public about his work and his study in the medical field of PTSD.The Body Keeps the Score,
written by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, is based on the simple premise that traumatic experiences
–ranging from combat to childhood neglect, sexual abuse, and beyond –all have a
lasting impact on one’brain and body. Published in 2014, the book covers a broad range of
traumatic experiences and offers healing tools for both care providers and survivors of abuse.
There is no such thing as ‘liht reading’for someone wanting to work through trauma.
However, this book is easy to read, while taking a serious, in-depth look at facing—an
overcoming—om painful topics.Dr. Van der Kolk’work is backed by science that
shows just how trauma changes the brain and nervous system. The text includes both personal
examples of patients of Dr. Van der Kolk, as well as the results of relevant scientific research.Dr.
Van der Kolk discusses different types of abuse and explains three main avenues of healing.
Many trauma survivors benefit from a combination of all three approaches, as there is no one
avenue that works for all people. The text is designed to build a holistic understanding of trauma
for healthcare professionals and abuse survivors alike.Successfully explaining the history, impact,
recovery, and context of traumatic experiences, The Body Keeps the Score offers insight into how
the brain changes in response to trauma and provides a road map to navigate how to move
beyond it.
