black nurse, midwife, and educator who was recruited from the Caribbean to work in the United
States of America (USA) when there was a shortage of nurses. Although exposed to racism on
several occasions while in the USA, these challenges became more profound when she went back
to school to obtain a doctoral degree. The story is portrayed by a character known as Hilda Jay
who was faced with intense racial challenges that almost killed her dreams. The chair of
Hilda’doctoral committee did everything in her power to prevent Hilda from graduating.
Hilda experienced roadblocks and brick walls that were deliberately set up to foster failure. The
author is also deeply concerned about the treatment of blacks, indigenous, and people of color
(BIPOC) in institutions of higher learning where the attrition rate of these students is very high.As a
midwife, Hilda used her experience with women in labor and birth to identify seven principles that
have been very helpful to her in achieving her goals despite immense obstacles. She knows that
for women experiencing natural childbirth, it takes fierce determination and tremendous effort to
push through their often-severe pains and sometimes discouragement, to give birth. Thus, the
term PUSHING. The principles include Prayer, Unwavering faith, Self-control, Hope, Integrity,
Nourishment for physical and spiritual health, and Gratitude, which foster unwavering trust in God
and in her ability to overcome and triumph.The book informs readers about the impact that racial
discrimination can have on an individual and exposes some of the deep-seated biases that are still
prevalent in our country today. Although written with students in mind, it is the intent of the author
that these principles will help any individual facing any kind of obstacles to overcome their
challenges and achieve their goals.
