Muuto is rooted in the Scandinavian design tradition characterized 

by enduring aesthetics, functionality, craftsmanship and an 

honest expression. By expanding this heritage with forward-looking 

materials, techniques and bold creative thinking, our ambition is to 

deliver new perspectives on Scanadinavian design. 

In fact our name, Muuto, comes from muutos, meaning 

new perspective in Finnish. We handpick leading contemporary 

designers who are strong interpreters of our philosophy and 

combine their talents with the passionate Muuto creative team. 

You will know our design because it has muutos: objects made 

sublime through new perspectives, enjoyed across the world, 

representing the best of Scandinavian design today.

Before we introduce a new Muuto design, 

we want to be sure that it adds a new perspective, 

building on a strong heritage but in a modern 

context—somehow improving or challenging what 

has been made before. 

We search for designers who share our mindset. 

Creatives with a contemporary take on tradition who 

embrace the essence of Scandinavian design. 

We aim to create designs that are inviting and 4intuitively 

attractive. We hope our perspectives on Scandinavian 

designs will inspire you to reflect on your surroundings

How can design trigger emotion and why do we gravitate 

towards one space over another? 

It’s these types of questions that drive our dedication to creating 

new design, as we hope our perspectives will make you 

reflect on what makes a space feel just right. 

Our interiors are landscapes for authentic and analogue 

experiences. Our homes are filled with objects that stimulate 

the senses. Colors that evoke memories and emotions. 

Materials that trigger feelings. Shapes that tap into our subconscious. 

Objects influence our impression of space and 

how we feel when in the presence of them. 

Of course, our perceptions of design are subjective. An 

object can have a clear personality and convey multiple 

messages, depending on the receiver. It could be a small detail 

you find endearing. A fabric you like to run your fingers over. 

The sound a lamp makes when switched on. Or the color of a 

sofa that soothes you. We each experience designs in our own 

ways and its colors, shapes, materials and tactility affect how 

we interpret our surroundings. 

It’s All About Perspectives 

Our name Muuto comes from the Finnish word muutos, 

meaning new perspective. Drawing on our Scandinavian 

roots, we create functional, well-crafted pieces with an 

enduring aesthetic and an honest expression. Before we 

introduce a new Muuto design, we want to be sure that it 

adds a new perspective, building on a strong heritage but 

in a modern context—somehow improving or challenging 

what has been made before. 

We search for designers who share this same mindset. Creatives 

with a contemporary take on tradition, who embrace 

the essence of Scandinavian design. Who are keen on exploring 

a forward-thinking approach to natural materials, 

comfort, craftsmanship and durability. Individuals who 

bring a fresh set of eyes to creating something new, as well 

as new ways of reimagining something old. 

People tend to gravitate towards something that feels 

familiar yet new. We aim to create designs that are inviting 

and intuitively attractive. Designs should spark curiosity 

and interest—without imposing itself on its surroundings. 

Because a chair in one interior can seem soft and elegant, 

whereas in another interior it can look contemporary and edgy. 

It’s all about perspectives. 

More Than Merely Design 

For a design to have character, it involves details that resonate 

with us on a deeper level, which results in an object 

with presence. Able to set the scene for dining and socializing. 

A more focused atmosphere for working. Or a sense of wellbeing 

for relaxing. 

Everybody knows the feeling of entering a room that feels 

good. We hope our perspectives on Scandinavian designs will 

inspire you to reflect on your surroundings and how they make

Turbina Studio is an artistic practice founded in 

2018 by Mateo Fumero and Minerva Capdevila. 

It is primarily concerned with the perception 

of time, space and the cosmos: through its 

exploration of materials and objects, it reflects 

on life’s transcendental questions, reframing the 

earthly experience of the unknown. Mateo and 

Minerva live together with their young daughter, 

Rita, in an old dry cleaners in Sants, Barcelona, 

where home and work co-exist in perfectly 

unstructured fluidity—almost all of the time. 



The home of artists Mateo Fumero and Minerva Capdevila, 

co-founders of Turbina Studio, is defined by its fluidity. 

The pair, partners in life and work, are based in a former 

dry cleaner in Sants, Barcelona. 

There, they live in a warm, raw, textural space with a 

neutral palette, lots of lush green plants, and an ever-evolving 

collection of objects. The open-plan living area they 

share with their three-year-old daughter, Rita, is connected 

to their workspace—a large, open room full of machinery, 

objects and material archives—allowing the artists to step 

seamlessly between home and work, life and art. From hour 

to hour, day to day, their young family eludes regularity and 

routine. Instead, their time is ruled by how they feel, what 

they need in the moment, and how much longer one of their 

newly created sculptures might need to dry in the studio, 

before they can resume work on it. It’s an unconventional 

way of life, and their space has evolved to accommodate it. 

Except, that is, in the kitchen-cum-dining area, which is 

configured around a simple, elegant table and accompanying 

bench. Overhead, the skylight provides a direct connection 

to the sun, the moon and the cosmos, which play such 

an elemental role in the studio’s practice. (Turbina, whose 

name refers to the idea “of generating things, of transforming 

energy, or being in continuous motion”, is driven by the 

duo’s interest in the universe, the planets and their orbits, 

space and time.) But Mateo, Minerva and Rita spend much 

of their time in this family space, cooking nourishing meals 

for lunch and dinner. The living space is, if you like, the axis 

on which the whole home turns. 

Elsewhere, they display their treasures—remnants of past 

projects, industrial processes, organic rocks or pleasing 

found objects. They play, they reflect, they exist together. 

They continue to grow the space itself—the outside terrace, 

currently a space for messy work, is very much a work in 

progress, and they are also planning a room for Rita, for the 

future. If Turbina’s work explores the perception of time and 

space through sculptural works, then it’s from this base that 

their ideas originate. Fluidly, organically. At their own pace. 

What drew you to the neighbourhood you live in? 

Sants was a small industrial town adjacent to Barcelona before 

the city grew. Many of the old factory buildings are still 

here, although they have other uses now—they are no longer 

industrial. You can feel the history of the neighbourhood in 

many small workshops that served these large factories, and 

the beautiful old houses that still remain, as well as the lively 

working class spirit that is still present here. 

Are there any spaces that inspired you, when you were 

creating this one? 

We lived for several years in self-managed and artistic 

co-existence projects. Large spaces in industrial buildings 

always with an integrated workshop. Unfortunately we do 

not have that kind of a space now, but we have taken into 

account the importance of the place itself, and how much 

it conditions the type of life that is done in it. We are interested 

in provisional and unspecific spaces, so as not to 

create rigidity.

the drying times to do something with the little one, then go 

back to work... We’re not very fond of the idea of the weekend; 

instead, we try to organise ourselves and make the most 

of the flexibility that working on our own allows. We have 

gone through stages in which we worked intensely when Rita 

slept, for example. Now it is easier for us to combine with 

her: we take turns, we divide ourselves... For the moment, we 

love this rhythm. We hope to be able to maintain it over time.

How do you approach designing your home? 

In some ways, the house project started, and has been growing 

in parallel with, our artistic project. The fact that the process 

has been so slow—there are still unfinished parts—has 

given us time to live in the space, reflect and change when 

necessary. We have learned from it, and in some ways it has 

been a testing ground. We did most of the renovation work 

and furnishings ourselves, as we moved into the space. Of 

course, it also adapts to the growth of our daughter Rita, as 

different needs arise at each stage of her life. 

Where do you spend most of your time here? 

The living room-kitchen is the most versatile space in the 

house. It is also the brightest, so we use it for various workshop 

tasks, and for photography. It is the space where we spend the 

most time: we play, cook, eat, receive visitors and meet. 

Are there any smells that make you feel at home? 

The smell of wood from the workshop, or the smell of good 

homemade food. 

What kinds of materials are you drawn to? 

The materials of traditional construction are undoubtedly 

the ones that interest us the most: stone, terracotta, lime 

mortar, wood. We like to talk about the language of materials; 

we understand that each material has its own implicit, 

ancient symbology, somehow inscribed in our collective 

unconscious. In this way, materials act as symbols, clues or 

triggers about the whole set of ideas they contain. In fact, the 

material itself is the starting point of many of our projects. 

What do you collect? 

We collect a lot of objects from nature when we travel. We 

have a special fixation on stones and geology. But we also 

have all kinds of things! Industrial and mechanical pieces, 

objects that catch our attention because of their color, texture, 

material, deterioration... what we call “selected junk” 

and we accumulate in various boxes that we call “boxes of 

wonders”, that we use for our still lives. 

Do you live with anything that you have made? 

We dedicate a lot of time to each of the pieces, so we establish 

a very close bond with them. We take them from one 

place to another and find a place for them, so that we can see 

them every day and in different situations. 

What does ‘home’ mean to you? 

Wow, that’s a difficult one. We would quote a text by Bachelard, 

in answer to this: “The house is our corner of the world; it is, as 

has been said, our first universe. It is really a cosmos. The house, 

like fire, like water, allows us to evoke gleams of reverie that illuminate 

the synthesis of immemorial and memory. The house shelters 

the reverie, protects the dreamer. The house allows us to dream in 

peace. The house is the first world of being. Before being launched 

into the world, man is deposited in the cradle of the house. And 

always in our dreams the house is a great cradle.” • 

What about sounds? 

That would be the silence, or the rehearsals of Lucía, Mateo's 

sister who lives upstairs, and is a musician. We are lucky not 

to feel like we are in a city. 

What do you see when you look out of your windows? 

We only see the sky, and sometimes a flying cat. Much of the 

living room ceiling is made of glass on which Tofu, Lucía's cat, 

sometimes lies. 

Your home and workshop are attached. How do you divide 

your work life and your home life? 

Our way of working is not very conventional, we don't have a 

very clear schedule or routine. We organise ourselves daily as 

much as possible, and adapt to the rhythms set by our daughter, 

Rita. We’ll work for a few hours, then take advantage of

collection habit. I have a lot 

of chairs. Some people's 

work really resonates with 

me, and I love to have part 

of their ideas in my space.” 

Nicholas Bijan Pourfard is a luthier and furniture maker 

based in southern California. He lives in Escondido, in a 

home designed by Modernist architect and industrial designer 

Walter S. White, where he is sensitively restoring 

some of the building’s original features. 

Nicholas Bijan Pourfard is not very good at sitting still. In 

his home in Escondido, at the southernmost tip of California, 

the luthier and furniture maker is just putting the finishing 

touches to a bookcase he built for the space, which he moved 

into a little over a year ago. And it’s not just any space: designed 

by architect and industrial designer Walter S. White, the 

building is considered a love letter to Modernist architecture, 

pinned to mood boards the world over. It’s lucky, then, to have 

found a new inhabitant in Pourfard. 

His sensitivity in restoring the home’s special details is 

mirrored in the intuitive way he has designed its interior, 

populating it with chairs by designers he admires, antique 

rugs from his father’s Persian rug store, and the odd custom 

piece built in his workshop, too. The open-plan layout is all 

warm white walls, honeyed light and organic materials— 

Nicholas will choose forms and textures based on what he 

sees, and what’s missing. But underpinning his slow, steady 

approach is a rigorously honed eye—one attuned by years of 

creating instruments from reclaimed skateboard decks, and 

process-driven experiments with furniture-making. 

None of which would have started at all, Pourfard explains, 

if it hadn’t been for an ill-timed accident that kept 

the student from his skateboard for some six months. Then, 

as now, he was happy to find that wood could keep him busy.

What’s it like living in San Diego? 

Los Angeles is the hip place. Everyone's stylish and knows 

what's cool. In San Diego, we don't really have that. I live in 

Escondido, more of a rural farm area. It gets hot here, up to 

90, 100, in the summers. It's almost a desert, but it's really 

easy to farm here. I can grow just about anything in this 

climate: mangoes, figs, cactus fruits, dragon fruits, peaches, 

guava, everything. The plants evoke a lot of passion for me. 

My weekend getaways are to Palm Springs, Los Angeles, 

Mexico—I can get to Mexico in 20 minutes. San Diego’s 

community crossover is probably the thing that makes it the 

most unique. I have friends that live in Mexico and come to 

work here, or who I hang out with there on the weekends. 

We have our own design community here, and it’s truly 

international. I used to live in San Francisco and New York, 

and that kind of energy is addictive and contagious. So I do 

miss that a little bit. But being in my bubble here and having 

so much space to create and focus, I can free myself. 

Tell me about your home. 

I live in an architecturally significant house. It was designed 

by Walter S. White, who designed the Wave House in Palm 

Springs, which is essentially a museum home. I've been 

pouring hours of work into the interior, because the bones of 

it are great. There are super cool little details that are part of 

how the house itself was made, but it wasn't kept very well. 

So I'm doing all that detailed work, bringing it back. 

What is your favorite thing about having a garden? How 

does this outside area complement your home’s interior? 

I really think being in the garden has become the greatest 

way of spending time in my life. I have always been attracted to 

farm culture and my father has a four-acre orchard of every 

fruit you can imagine. I always loved seeing how every part 

of the yard can grow into itself and with my encouragement 

become something truly amazing. 

I am in the beginning stages of my yard, but I feel like every 

day more of a master plan is developing. I specifically think 

that the outside of a home carries a great influence on how 

you perceive the inside of one. 

How did you first start working with wood and where did 

you go from there? 

When I was 18 I hurt my ankle skating, and it was a super 

long recovery—six months. While I was recovering, I took 

all my old skateboards, and the jigsaw that I had, and I started 

cutting them and glueing them and doing all these crazy 

experiments. 

I did play guitar at the time, and I thought, how cool 

would it be if I could make a guitar? I was just gonna go buy 

wood. But I'm 18. I don't have very much money. I thought, 

what if I made it out of skateboards, somehow? I was about 

halfway done when I realised, this is gonna work! So I started 

making two more. 

I kept making them. At the same time I worked for free as 

a cabinet-maker, to learn more woodworking, then I worked 

for free painting guitars. Then the craziest thing happened. 

A guy at college was in a video film class, and filmed me 

making guitars and we put it on YouTube. I thought, wow, 

5,000 people watched this! Then I went to bed and woke up 

and someone had picked it up, and it got something like 30 

million views. It went insane after that, and I started selling 

guitars all over the world through Prisma Guitars. 

Is there anything you collect? 

I have a pretty bad chair collection habit. I have a lot of 

chairs. Some people's work really resonates with me, and I 

love to have part of their ideas in my space. If everything 

was something I made, it would be really flat, you know? 

What’s your favourite time of day in the house? 

Right when I wake up and I see the sun hit everything, I 

really see the magic of it all. Those are probably the most 

productive moments of my day. I'm not emailing, but my 

brain feels active. That's the moment when my brain thinks 

of the next idea. •

Giving New Life To Plastic Waste—The new generation 

of Fiber Chairs is designed with a conscious perspective 

in mind and a wish to improve our environmental impact. 

The whole Fiber Chair Family, without upholstery, uses a 

minimum of 80% recycled plastic and FSC-certified wood 

fibers (FSC C028824). 

The Fiber Chair Family is an essential part of our product 

portfolio and transforming our production of it is an ambitious 

starting point in becoming more circular in our consumption 

of raw material. In fact, by switching to recycled plastic, we 

expect to reduce our use of virgin plastic by more than 80 tons 

per year.

The Air We Breathe Indoor 

Healthier indoor climates—Without a doubt, the air we 

breathe is essential for our health. Even for indoor environments, 

where we spend so much of our time, the air quality is 

vital to our sense of wellbeing. 

In any space and often impossible to see, chemicals are 

emitted into the air. These emissions come from all kinds of 

objects in our everyday lives. The type of emissions that can 

have an adverse effect on our health contain what’s called 

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). In fact, the majority 

of VOCs can be found at home—in certain types of soaps, 

perfume and cosmetics, cleaning products and disinfectants, 

fuel, paint, plastic and the like. 

At Muuto, we want our furniture to enhance your surroundings, 

while at the same time, create healthier indoor 

climates. That’s why we go to great lengths to have our furniture 

tested. So far, the vast majority of our furntiture collection 

is VOC tested.

lets us measure our CO2e-emission per product. By tracking a 

product's components and their origins its possible to calculate

Our suppliers—As we aim to take responsibility for our operations, 

we expect and demand the same from our suppliers. 

In striving to ensure that our designs are produced using 

safe techniques, by skilled workers who operate under healthy 

conditions, we have all our manufacturers sign our Code of 

Conduct. Our Code of Conduct is aligned with the UN Global 

Compact of Human Rights and includes principles that respect 

labor laws, human rights, ethical conduct as well as the 

environment. Key issues include anti-corruption policies and 

prohibiting child labor. Because for us, it’s essential that our
