After studying Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine at the Visayas State University (VSU) in the
Philippines, Ana Marquiza Quilicot pursued a European Master in the Animal Breeding and Genetics
(EMABG) program. In this interview she shares her favourite memories during her life-shaping-time
at BOKU and reveals her passion for animal science, discussing her experiences, challenges, and
insights into the world of animal science and impactful work in animal breeding.

Is there a story behind your choice of study field?
Growing up in the beautiful province of Bohol, Philippines,
I was privileged to attend an agricultural school
during my high school years. Being exposed to various
farm animals as well as dogs and cats at a young age, I developed
a deep interest in fields that could contribute to
the animal industry. My father, an animal science lecturer,
played a significant role in inspiring and motivating me to
pursue my passion. Listening to his lectures and reading
his notes after my elementary school classes, as well as
participating in his classes’ field trips to different farms
in the province, taught me invaluable lessons. All these
experiences have shaped me into the person I am today
and continue to inspire me to make a positive impact in
the animal industry.
Were you nervous about coming to Europe?
BOKU was among my priority universities during the
application process for EMABG. I felt both nervous and
excited about coming here. I learned about Austria and
Europe from documentaries, books, and my Humanities
teacher, who introduced us to the culture, particularly
