PESTER PHARMA
creates a pedigree over the entire logistics chain. In addition, a
packaging hierarchy is set up. The packaging and palletizing
process automatically detects which package is in which shipping
case and which case is on which pallet. In this way, a dispatch note
can be sent to the addressee giving the package details and serial
numbers. There is a call for this requirement owing to the fact that
pharmaceutical wholesale plays a more important role in America
than in Europe. moreover, the use of RfId technology is being
pushed ahead.
banderole: what goals have Boehringer ingelheim set with their
track-and-trace pilot project? Thilo wolf: As the project
title ’Product Safety and Security’ alread y implies, securing the
quality of the pharmaceutical product and the supply chain are
our main focus of attention. Of course, being ready on time for the
regulatory demands of the individual countries plays a major role
here. The pilot project is going to enable us to gather experience in
this technology and set up a corresponding IT infrastructure in
order to be ready for the rollout. This will help us to establish a
know-how basis for the implementation at other locations.
banderole: what requirements do you expect from the integration
and implementation of a track-and-trace system? volker
glück: Considering the extent of the process, from the labeling to
the respective control of the folding cartons, bundles, corrugated
cases and pallets, the greatest challenge is going to be to implement
the packaging without forfeiting performance! As regards
the labeling and control of the cartons, the space requirements are
our chief concern because, in our case, we need combined units
comprising the printing, camera and weighing systems.
banderole: why did Boehringer ingelheim decide to realize the
track-and-trace pilot project with pester? volker glück:
Pester is our partner in all our end-of-line packaging sectors. Our
amicable collaboration with Pester has persisted for years. Together
with Pester and the company Seidenader, our track-andtrace
module supplier, it was possible to develop a conclusive
track-and-trace concept, the implementation of which we are working
on right now.
banderole: what is so special about this project? volker
glück: The special thing about it is the interdisciplinary and multicultural
structure in the organization of the project. This is an
international project involving subteams in the USA and germany.
we are gradually going to integrate all the other Boehringer
Ingelheim locations with the forthcoming requirements from
france. Ingelheim is where all threads converge.
Banderole: which product labeling system does Boehringer
ingelheim favor most? volker glück: Thermal ink jet
systems.
banderole: how is the track-and-trace issue going to affect
tomorrow’s pharmaceutical packaging? volker glück: One
of the biggest challenges for pharma manufacturers is integrating
and implementing track-and-trace systems economically, without
forfeiting performance. Because of the track-and-trace approach,
the focus is no longer on batches but rather on single cartons.
generally speaking, the requirements on safety standards will
increase right around packaging. when implementing the trackand-trace
requirements in the folding carton sector, a tamper-
evident closure is strongly recommended, for example.
