Der Einsatz von computergenerierten
Bewegtbildern und Contents in
Filmproduktionen ist ein Thema, das
in vielen Branchen große Wellen geschlagen
hat - und das nicht erst seit
den großen Erfolgen von computeranimierten
Projekten wie Pixar´s »Toy
Story« oder James Cameron´s weltweitem
3D Kinohit »Avatar«. In den
Long before computer animated successes like, Pixar’s Toy
Story and James Cameron’s 3D smash hit Avatar, employing
digital content in film production had made a considerable
impact on a number of industries. In recent years, many productions
have proven the potential that CGI offers beyond the
advertising and film industries. Countless companies now use
animated computer graphics to create emotionally inspired
images and films for promoting their products - to effectively
position their brand and differentiate themselves from the
competition.
Hardware and software components develop so rapidly
that both prosumers and consumers are now able to achieve
impressive CG results. The issue is no longer if, but how!
More important than ever are the differences in image qua-
nutzen heute computergenerierte Bewegtbilder,
Schwankungen qualitativer Art vorliegen. Möchte man allerdings
aktuelle CGI Produktfilme korrekt bewerten, muss
die Entwicklung von computergenerierten Bewegtbildern in
den letzten Jahren mit berücksichtigt werden.
KODO – Soul of Motion is the new definition of motion
A trained eye can quickly identify the finer points and technical
details, particularly if there are any discrepancies in quality.
Progressive developments in computer generated imagery
must always be taken into account to correctly evaluate current
CGI productions.
One of the first industries to really take advantage of CGI
was the automotive industry. As a technical pioneer in this respect,
the sector quickly recognized the potential and value of
the technology. The field of 3D realtime visualization was still
in its infancy in the 1990s – the first CAD based models were
rendered on computers the size of refrigerators. Even at that
stage, the level of detail applied to digital models was better
than most of the existing physical models. Yet, the capabilities
were far removed from what is available today. The actual CGI
industry consisted of small «racing teams” that approached
the start line with different ideas, technologies and philosophies
– and the results also differed accordingly. Of these initial
small firms, only a few have managed to hold their own

Partie. Um das hohe Tempo in diesem Markt konstant voranzutreiben,
ist eine gehörige Portion Leidenschaft für die
Materie gefragt. Die passionierten Motorsport- und Automobilenthusiasten
nennt man gerne »Petrolheads«.
Die gleiche Be-
against the international competition. In technological terms,
minor modifi cations are being made now. The real differences
lie in the overall package, which incorporates high-end technology,
strategic-conceptual consulting, fl exibility and creativity.
RTT, poised as a trendsetter right from the very beginning,
possesses a great deal of passion for the subject and has consistently
kept up with the high-tempo progression of the market.
Dedicated motorsport and automobile enthusiasts are
often referred to as petrol heads – for them there is nothing
more enticing than the bubbling growl of a V8 engine or the
smell of burnt rubber on asphalt. Our CG artists have the same
enthusiasm for the virtual side of the work and are thrilled by
challenging productions. These productions demand technological
and creative innovations to achieve unique results. Diffi
cult projects are an incentive to continually improve performance
and output. Processes are permanently being refi ned in
order to realize further progress.
RTT spans the spectrum in the fi eld of CGI. Our reach extends
from high-end visualization in design and development
to photorealistic print production as seen in Hollywood fi lm
productions and special online and mobile solutions. We are
constantly striving to develop solutions fi t for the future. In the
CG media environment, this involves personalized brochures,
magazines and movies, 3D stereo and interactive fi lms, and
realtime applications – everything required in order to provide
brilliant and extraordinary cross-channel storytelling.
»Mazda Shinari« – Power and Dynamism on four Wheels
To celebrate the company’s 90th anniversary, Mazda wanted
to herald a new era of design. Ever since the launch of the
fi rst Mazda R360 coupé exactly 50 years ago, Mazda vehicle
design has constantly strived to push the boundaries of the
concept of ‘motion’ in a number of different ways, as well as to
develop cars that are as exciting to look at as they are to drive.
Since the introduction of the ‘zoom zoom’ brand message in
particular, Mazda’s style has been sporty and athletic. This has
been refl ected in the dynamic design of new models, such as
the Mazda RX-8 (2003) and the Mazda 3 MPS (2006).
The Shinari is the result of a consistently applied development
strategy in which the theme of ‘motion’ is broadened to
examine motion inspired by nature. The original meaning of
the Japanese word ‘shinari’ describes the intense yet sleek appearance
of great power, which can twist and distort tough
materials such as steel and bamboo. In addition, the word refers
to ‘the appearance of people or animals who twist their
bodies in a supple manner for optimum speed’.
[4]
[5]
japanische Wort »Shinari« beschreibt in seiner ursprünglichen
Mazda chief designer Ikuo Maeda explains: »In our work to
further evolve the expression of motion, Mazda Design has
focused on the strength, beauty and tension found in the ‘instantaneous
movement’ of animals at the very moment that
the motion begins. This motion is so full of vitality that it stirs
the emotions of those who see it. We have named it ‘KODO
– Soul of Motion’, and our aim is to express movement with
forceful vitality and speed, embodying this design theme in
Mazda’s upcoming models.« [1]
This vision is both the basis for the concept car’s title and
also what was required in realizing the film. The central idea
behind KODO is already apparent in the intro: white reflections
moving across the car’s bodywork show off the powerful
contours, but still leave plenty to the imagination. The Kendo
warrior, the car’s counterpart, is illuminated in the same dramatic
way as the car. [2+3] These hints of the car excite the
imagination and make the viewer hungry for more – whetting
the appetite. This clever sequence of images showing car and
warrior overlapping and intermingling creates visual suspense.
Yet the motion sequences flowing into one another pause
without warning and then suddenly erupt with a burst of
speed – like a predator stalking its prey and choosing the right
moment to pounce.
This use of opposites continues throughout the film. The
Tokyo street scenes in particular have a great impact. The design
of a concept car is far more eye-catching than that of a
mass-produced car – and this contrast is emphasized in particular
by the street scene, which shows the car model from
all angles. [4] For the interior, Mazda developed the concept
of an ‘ultimate athletic space’, combining knowledge of ergonomics
with basic mechanical function. The driver can really
enjoy the driving experience with the assistance of the latest
vehicle technology, while passengers may relax in the freedom
and openness of their surroundings. The car’s modern, classy
interior is presented in a realistic way during the film using a
wide range of zooms and camera perspectives amid changing
light conditions. [5]
einem sehr hohen Detaillierungsgrad umgesetzt The virtual car design has been implemented
with an advanced degree of visual quality and a very high level of detail
[6]
[7]
[d] [e]
Initial Customer Briefing
Mazda instructed RTT to focus on features that characterized
the new, feline Shinari design. These features included
the powerful, streamlined shape that‘s coupled with a heavy
sensuality apparent in every element of the exterior design.
Additionally, the individual, distinctive details of the car, like
the molded wheel arches originally introduced on the Mazda
RX-8, were not to be neglected. These parts emphasize the
front wheels and accentuate the car‘s dynamic motion that
is both elegant and sporty especially from a side-view. A sleek,
aluminum strip begins at the radiator grill and runs across the
hood, wheel arches, lights and bumper to create an impression
of speed and is featured in the animation. [6] The product film
had to realize to a high aesthetic standard the storyboard and
the design concept for the target audience, the runtime should
be between two and three minutes, and a high-gloss film at
full HD resolution should be available. The key to production
success was RTT DeltaGen. As the lead time for this project was
particularly short, the software solution was able to demonstrate
its full range of benefits.
RTT Japan @Work
Dadurch konnten, verschiedene Projektphasen parallelisiert
festzulegen. Nach der Abnahme wurden Rough Cuts erstellt:
by, several project phases could be executed in tandem. Subsequently,
RTT’s team was able to react to any challenges with
great efficiency and speed. The film production essentially consisted
of a series of steps linked together in a well-established
pipeline. Scribbled storyboards were created right from the start
as a way of recording the basic ideas for individual film scenes.
These were then discussed with the client in order to define the
creative thrust – and once approved, the so-called rough cuts
were created. This involved the individual storyboard images
being edited together with moods and furnished with sound
effects. Futoshi Yamauchi then processed the drafts ready for a
second approval.
Once the drafts had received the client’s full approval during
the second meeting, the project moved into the next work
phase: the animation details had to be prepared using roughly
rendered animatics, together with the details of the look developed
in realtime in collaboration with the art directors. The
actual footage was generated independently of the rendering
solution in ‘passes’ (beauty, reflection, ambient occlusion, depth,
normal…) and ‘layers’ (sky, background, car, details and foreground).
[7] Nuke was used during the entire compositing and
post-production process. The final part of the workflow was
the color grading and final edit: Adobe Premiere Pro was the
editing software used.
[11]
Look-Details - alles in Echtzeit.
dann in Nuke. Am Ende des Workflows standen Color
Grading und Schnitt mit Adobe Premiere.
Guerrilla filming in Tokyo City Centre
The product film draws its power from the opposites being
portrayed: the chosen backdrop for the film was Ginza – an extremely
popular business and entertainment district of Tokyo,
Japan’s capital city. Here, pulsating city life is packed into an
extremely confined area. However, this otherwise lively district
was quite deliberately pictured devoid of people: letting a single
car drive through an empty metropolis symbolizes exclusivity
and is an expression of luxury, as empty space is a scarce
commodity in Japan.
The benefits of RTT DeltaGen were fully exploited in the
complicated city-scene shots: enormous flexibility in the choice
of perspective and extremely short rendering times. [8] The
‘WYSIWYG’ nature of the realtime tool allowed feedback loops
and approvals to be carried out extremely efficiently. Maya and
VRay were used for the remaining scenes. The live action scenes
[10]

is hit by artificial and natural
light as it exits the
tunnel, with both sources
of light being reflected
from the paintwork
with the Kendo warrior were shot by an external crew, and after
five hours of processing were ready for inclusion.
In order to shoot the real film background, filming took place
on location in two slots of two hours each. In addition, four RTT
employees took 1500 photos at 4 o’clock in the morning when
there was the least traffic on the roads. The urban canyons
were then digitally cleared of third party brands, and already
existing ones were covered using matching image material. [9]
The issue of buildings was also solved by Futoshi’s team in an
expert manner with the same level of care. In order to ensure
that the facades would appear as realistic as possible, 70 percent
of the buildings were created in-house using Google Maps
as a base, i.e. the interwoven surfaces of the tightly-packed
buildings were modeled in a complex fashion, and the available
photos were retouched and added to the scenery in a laborintensive
process.
The section of the clip that would show the car being driven
also turned out to be quite a challenge, as it again required
real image backgrounds for digital content. It was of course not
possible to close the streets of Tokyo at a moment’s notice, so
a guerrilla filming technique was used. [10] A BMW Z4, which
is slightly smaller in size than the Mazda Shinari, proved to be
a suitable replacement vehicle. Filming was done from a Ford
Mustang Cabrio, as this roofless four-seater could provide the
necessary space. Futoshi Yamauchi and his cameraman could
therefore film from a standing position in the back seats. The
BMW was later tracked in Boujou, and the CG Shinari pasted in
subsequently during compositing. However, the wing mirrors
were considerably larger than those on the concept car. This
meant that is was necessary to make corrections during postprocessing
using rotoscoping.
One of the highlights is the film sequence in the high-speed
tunnel towards the end of the clip. [11] Very short shots and
Eine Erfolgsgeschichte »Made by RTT«
qualitativ hochwertiger Film. Er verfügt über ein ausgewogenes
Verhältnis zwischen Schnelligkeit und Ruhe, der positive
Emotionen beim Betrachter hervorruft, aber dennoch Freiraum
für individuelle Interpretationen zulässt.
Pünktlich zu Mazda‘s Jubiläumsfeierlichkeiten wurde der
Film fertiggestellt. Die Japaner wählten für die Premiere einen
countershots following quickly after one after another and clever
use of appropriate rhythmic music increases the viewer’s
adrenalin levels right up to the very end. The extremely quick
driving demonstrates the tremendous power lurking beneath
the hood of the car – with proof being provided in a culmination
featuring glittering light. [12] From a dramaturgic point of
view, the drive ends in a frenzy of speed and powerful elegance,
particularly emphasized through the use of a characteristic
‘zoom zoom’ slow-mo. [13]
A ‘made by RTT’ Success Story
This RTT production was particularly special as the planning,
design, production, editing and sound were completely in the
hands of RTT Japan right from the outset. Despite the tight
schedule and the sometimes difficult circumstances, RTT Japan
managed to incorporate every one of the client’s requirements
into the film in spectacular fashion. The storyboard displayed
all the elements that the client wanted to use to present their
new concept model in a manner true to the brand. A film bursting
with quality and style was created through the clever use
of camera perspectives, light and color grading, sound effects
and stylistic devices. It strikes a good balance between speed
and calmness, and evokes positive emotions in the viewer while
still leaving room for individual interpretation. The film was
completed by RTT in time for the anniversary celebrations. For
the premiere, the Japanese chose a company event in Milan,
Italy. Immediately after the clip was shown, the real prototype
of the car was presented to the public – with resounding international
success. The Mazda Shinari continued its successful
worldwide tour through the automotive industry after the successful
presentation of the film. Stops included the Paris Motor
Show in October 2010 and the L.A. Auto Show in late fall of the
same year. Numerous international publications, both in print
and online, also bear witness to the car’s outstanding success.
firmeneigenen Event in Mailand, Italien.
Erfolg. Weitere Stationen waren unter anderem der
Pariser Autosalon im Oktober 2010 und die L.A. Auto Show im
Über RTT About RTT
Als strategischer Partner und Vordenker beschreitet RTT
mit 3D Echtzeitvisualisierung neue Wege bei der Entwicklung
und Vermarktung von Produkten – von der individuellen
Lösung bis hin zur integrierten Prozessunterstützung. Dabei
Bereits in frühen Design-
interaktive Eventapplikationen, Websites, Trainingsmaterialien
und vieles mehr. Der Vorstellungskraft wie auch der Kreativität
sind hier keine Grenzen gesetzt. Daraus resultieren
schaffen. 3D Visualisierungen werden somit integraler Bestandteil
des Produktlebenszyklus. 3D Software entwickelt
sich von der reinen Desktop-Applikation zur Enterprise-
Anwendung. Das Internet wird optimal für internationale
Kooperation genutzt. Eine neue Ära der Bildkommunikation
beginnt.
As a strategic partner and forward thinker, RTT establishes
with 3D realtime visualization new approaches to product development
and marketing – from individual solutions all the
way through to fully integrated process support. RTT understands
3D visualization not only as a technology, but as the
medium for a new era of interdisciplinary, innovative visual
communication. Creativity, high-end software, and consulting
are intelligently combined in order to realize these ambitions.
Efficient communication lies at the heart of it all, enabling
companies to make the right decisions and to promote products
early in the process. Right from the early design and
development stages, 3D visualizations enable RTT‘s clients to
present products photorealistically and to place them in an
evocative setting. Both internal decision makers and end consumers
can provide direct feedback so that incorrect decisions
can be avoided to a great extent. From the very start, a single
3D data model is used in the design and development stages.
As soon as the product is signed off, the company has a complete
3D data set available. Through a highly efficient mechanism,
a wide range of marketing and sales tools can be immediately
produced: product images, films, brochures, interactive event
applications, websites, training materials and much more. There
is no limit to imagination and creativity. Thus production
costs can be cut considerably and time to market can be massively
reduced.
The ongoing integration of high-end visualization into the
PLM world will create even more synergies in the future. Hence,
3D visualizations will become an integral component of the
product life cycle. 3D software applications are evolving from
desktop applications into enterprise software. Internet use is
being optimized for international co-operation. A new era of
image communication is dawning.
