Two-dimensional photonic lattices based on families of nondiffracting
beams and their analysis
It is a major topic of interest to
identify and realize analogies between
solid state physics and photonics.
In this contribution, we present
significant experimental improve-
ments in the field of optically induced photonic lattices where the lattice structure is
given by the light-enhanced variation of the refractive index of the material. A variety of
advanced lattice geometries based on the complete set of nondiffracting beams defying
the important problem of beam broadening is generated and proven to exhibit this extraordinary
property over a large distance even under the restrictions of an experimental
implementation. These nondiffracting beams are subsequently used to optically induce
corresponding photonic lattices.
Furthermore, we present several analyzing methods for the induced refractive index
change e.g. waveguiding, where plane wave propagation is used to determine refractive
index variations via light intensity analysis , and Brillouin zone spectroscopy, where a
broad spatial spectrum of Bloch waves is used to identify the edges of the first Brillouin
zone.
