for Jewish History and Culture
Th e museum, accommodated in the Mikwe
House named after the ‘Court Jew’ Berend
Lehmann (1661–1730), houses a permanent
exhibition relating the history of the Jews
in Prussia as understood through the example
of the town of Halberstadt. Th e emphasis of
the presentation is on the neo­orthodox
orientation of the Halberstadt community in
the 19th and 20th centuries, which was
largely embodied by the entrepreneurial
Hirsch family.
Behind the rearward glass facade of the
Berend Lehmann Museum, but incorporated
into the exhibition, lies the square containing
the remains of the destroyed baroque
synagogue. In the Cantor House opposite
the museum, visitors are welcomed by
the ‘Museums Kaff ee Hirsch’ (MKH) –
Museum Café Hirsch – which off ers dishes
made according to traditional Jewish recipes.
