3 | Sponsorship activities
The Moses Mendelssohn Foundation, funded
by its corporate gains, maintains a sponsorship
programme mainly focussing on projects
implemented through the Moses Mendelssohn
Academy Halberstadt and the Moses
Mendelssohn Centre for European­Jewish
Studies in Potsdam.
Currently the following research projects and
activities are sponsored:
n Studies of the development of European
Jewry after 1989;
n Studies of the regional history of the Jews
in various federal states of Germany;
n Conferences on German­Jewish and
European­Jewish history;
n Excavation of the remains of the baroque
synagogue in the town of Halberstadt;
n Welcome events for school children
and students in the Halberstadt Academy and
in the Berend Lehmann Museum for
German­Jewish History and Culture;
n Presentation of art and music exhibitions;
n Publication of the ‘Zeitschrift für
Religions­ und Geistesgeschichte’
(Leiden/Boston) (Journal for the History of
Religion and Intellectual Discipline);
n Haskala. Wissenschaftliche Abhandlungen
(Scientific Treatises)
(Publishers: Olms Verlag, Hildesheim);
n ‘Library of Burned Books’
(Publishers: Olms Verlag, Hildesheim)
Preference will normally be given to projects
focussing on the German­Israeli and the
German­American dialogue, which seek
partnerships with other foundations in order
to implement joint projects in their field.
This includes plans for a scholarship
programme for students of Jewish studies.
The Foundation also intends to contribute
to nursing homes for the elderly, and to
the construction and operation of student
apartments. The student residences shall
also provide accommodation for Jewish
students and Israeli scholarship holders on
an appropriate scale. For senior citizens
of Jewish origin places will be reserved in the
nursing homes for the aged.
4 | Programmes and guidelines
The Foundation concentrates its funds on
programmes and projects of its own.
In exceptional cases, individual scholarships
may be granted beyond the scheduled
scholarship programme. The same applies to
printing costs and travel cost allowances,
which are only granted in the context of
projects already sponsored by the Foundation.
As a general rule the Foundation does not
subsidise any operating costs; nor will it
provide deficit funding. The Foundation
requests applicants to send all grant inquiries
and unsolicited applications to the
Foundation by mail.
