Top 5 books for the summer
The Broadway Bookshop selects five books from its
shelves to satisfy your summer reading needs.
The Girls (Emma Cline)
The tension mounts chillingly in
this psychological thriller based
on the 1969 Manson murders.
Cline so perfectly recreates the
atmosphere of that era it's hard
to believe she is much too young
to have been there.
The Adventures of Prince Achmed
What's on at the Museum of
Childhood this summer
The Essex Serpent (Sarah Perry)
A wonderful book full of
strange things imagined and
real. Whether it be religion,
science, love, desire, fear it's
all here. Very well written, too.
The world's oldest surviving animated film
features in the Museum of Childhood's summer
programme.
The Adventures of Prince Achmed dates back to
1926 and will be shown along with France's visual
masterpiece Kirikou and the Sorceress (1998).
Visitors can also take part in a craft activity and
pick up a trail related to the films for the full
experience, or just grab some popcorn from the
café, sit back and enjoy the movies.
It's £6.50 per person (under 3s free) and taking
place on 3, 10, 24 and 31 August. Activities are at
10am and screenings at 11am.
From 6 August to 4 September there are drop-in
sessions for all ages where you can create and
collaborate with resident artists for free.
And if you’re looking for something creative for
the kids to do during the holidays, there are still
places available on the second week of the artistled
summer camp from 1-5 August.
V&A Museum of Childhood, Cambridge Heath Rd, E2.
String Theory (David Foster Wallace)
A clothbound collection of the
kinetic writings on tennis by the
great American author of Infinite
Jest. What emerges in the course
of these fast, playful, peformative
pieces (on Federer, on the US
Open, etc) is that the genius of the
game is David Foster Wallace himself.
Earthsea (Ursula Le Guin)
There is much in the Earthsea
stories for children and adults
alike, from magic to thoughtprovoking
Taoist philosophy.
This newly re issued classic
is the perfect collection for
summer reading. Ages 9+.
Under Earth, Under Water (Daniel
and Aleksandra Mizielinski)
Brilliantly detailed, fantastic
illustrations, full of information
and fun to read. Great for
answering any questions about
what goes on under the surface
of what we can see. Ages 5+.
