Southwell and Nottingham Branch Southwell and Nottingham branch Spring meeting was held in February when we were pleased to welcome Maria Kirk. Maria is a retired florist and former NAFAS demonstrator and is one of the team of flower arrangers at St. Barnabas Roman Catholic Cathedral in Nottingham. Maria demonstrated three arrangements based on the use of three, five and seven flowers. Using baskets lined with plastic, Maria secured oasis and talked to us about herself as she began her arrangements using catkins, ivy and greenery gathered during walks with her dog, as well as from her garden, to create natural backgrounds into which the flowers were inserted. The choice of flowers ranged from anemones to gerberas to roses and daffodils. For the seven-flower arrangement, Maria demonstrated how it was possible to use several different types of flower to make an arrangement look like a snapshot taken in a garden. After the demonstration and lunch members were free to do their own arrangements with Maria on hand to offer encouragement and advice. We look forward to welcoming Maria again at some future date. The branch will celebrate 25 years since it first began, and we look forward to marking that milestone with a celebratory cake when we meet at St. Marys Hucknall for our <strong>2017</strong> branch AGM on 8 <strong>April</strong>.
