Fitness Catch some Zzzz and Zumba Roger Love, a local personal trainer, concludes our A-Z of fitness with... Z Zzzzzzzz There are many obvious benefits of getting enough sleep – usually seven to nine hours a night for an adult – with mental alertness top of the list. But good quality sleep also has an important role to play in weight loss. Research has shown that lack of sleep – and the extra energy needed to be awake – appears to lower levels of leptin, a hormone that signals that we are full, and increase ghrelin, a hormone that signals hunger. The result is that we crave more calories than we really need. Other research shows that fatigued people also tend to eat 36 LOVEEAST more carb-heavy, sweet snacks the following day, adding to the problem. Add to this that tiredness makes it harder to workout intensively – if at all – and it is clear that good quality sleep is the foundation on which all is built. Zumba This is a worldwide phenomenon, a mixture of dance and aerobic movements created by a Columbian choreographer in the 1990s. It is a fun and effective workout for weight loss and general fitness. The mood of the class will be set by the teacher, and, a bit like yoga, finding a teacher you click with is key. There is a nice selection of Zumba in Hackney. One of the best is Zoe Evans at the sports hall at Frampton Park Baptist Church, Frampton Park Road, on Saturdays at 10am (£5, zumbazoe.co.uk) I’ve seen Zoe teach diverse class-goers – from US exchange students to grandmothers, and ex-dancers to middle-aged men taking their first steps in dance fitness – with the same gentle persuasion and show-boating verve. There are also good classes at Fit This in Reading Lane, London Fields Fitness Studio, The Petchey Academy, and Victoria Park Baptist Church with Maxine Jones. Search zumba.com for a full list.
