Magic happens at Baker
When one hears the words
Baker Demonstration School,
many think of progressive education
and a place that truly
embraces the whole child.
These threads of thought are
pervasive throughout our legacy
as an institution whether
looking from the perspective
of our founders 100 years ago
or from the eyes of our master
teachers today.
First and foremost, children
are at the center of all that we
do. As we plan for children,
we look at children. We view
a child as strong and capable,
wrapped in the love and experience
he or she gets from their
family. It is an unsaid agreement
that the parents are the
experts on their child, while
we educators are the experts
on the broader developmental
level. Together, we form a
partnership to help our children
become the people they
were born to be.
Our educators appreciate the
full arc of the student experience
through time. We understand the
“we” nature of three year olds as
they move into their first school
experience. We see and foster
the grand and magical thinking
of 4-year-olds. We acknowledge
that the serene and sunny five
year old’s center of the universe
are the parental figures in their
lives. We know that the 6-yearold
is truly the center of his/her
own universe. We recognize that
seven brings a kind of turning
inward and worry about what
others are thinking about them.
This knowledge of general developmental
patterns and dispositions
guides how we make our
responses.
We also understand that the
environment where a child
learns is truly the “Third
Teacher.” When you walk

Sacred Heart School students thrive under right guidance
The school mission states: “Sacred
Heart School is a faith-based
community of faculty, parents and
staff dedicated to educating the
hearts and minds of children from
preschool through eighth grade.”
Visitors immediately recognize
key elements of the school’s mission
in action. From the youngest
preschooler to the most mature
eighth-grader, Sacred Heart Vikings
display a strong sense of
community, personal confidence,
and a deep commitment to service
in order to build a better world for
tomorrow.
This year, Sacred Heart School
started a program called Prayer
Families. Eleven Prayer Families,
each led by an eighth-grader and
made up of students from every
grade, meet on a monthly basis.
The eighth graders prepare a lesson
and activity to share with their
group, with a focus this year on
the eight Beatitudes. Prayer Families
allow students the opportunity
to share faith across grade levels
while giving the eighth-grade
Confirmation candidates a chance
to lead and teach younger students.
A new Parent and Tot class
was also introduced this year,
organized and led by Laura Wettersten,
Early Childhood Coordinator
and kindergarten teacher.
This free class is offered to parents
in the community and their
children (ages 3 months through
3-years old). Classes are held on
the first and third Wednesdays
of each month, from 9:15-10:15
a.m. The Parent and Tot class is a
wonderful opportunity for parents
of young children to connect with
other parents while their children
socialize, learn, and make new
friends. Come join us!
The STEAM lab has been up
and running since January of
2017. The lab integrates technology
exploration with academics
in a powerful hands-on, mindson
learning environment. Core
subject knowledge is reinforced
through applied learning – engaging
and motivating students while
improving academic performance.
This updated lab prepares learners
to compete in a global economy
by developing 21st century skills
such as problem solving, critical
thinking, project management,
communication, and collaboration.
The most exciting addition
to the lab is the brand new 3D
printer.
Students are enjoying all the engagements
the STEAM lab has to
offer.
