Friends and supporters of the Sam Pomeranz
Jewish Community Center of Syracuse will soon
community service and selfless giving at this
year’s 155th JCC Annual Meeting and Gala
presented by naming
sponsor The Wladis
Companies. The
event will be held on
Sunday, June 3, 2018
from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
at Owera Vineyards
A total of 11
presented at this
year’s event in
recognition of
outstanding service
given to the JCC
and to the local
community. The
theme will be a “Lower East Side Experience.”
The gala is the JCC’s biggest and most
important annual fundraiser. It’s a celebration
unlike any other in the Central New York Jewish
community in which friends and families come
together to benefit the JCC of Syracuse and to
pay tribute to those who have acted so selflessly.
A cocktail hour will kick off the event and
give way to a fun deli brunch. A brief business
meeting will follow, which will then lead into the
community service
a wide spectrum
of dedication and
support. The Kovod Award, which signifies honor
“We are so pleased to open our doors each
year to the community and create such a fun
and friendly atmosphere,”
said the JCC of Syracuse’s
Marci Erlebacher, executive
director. “Purim is one of
the most lively, joy-filled
holidays, and what better
way to celebrate than with
a carnival for our members,
neighbors and the whole
JCC enhances structure of its children’s programs
These days it seems like the world is in
a constant state of change. Sometimes
change can be good. This is certainly the
case here at the JCC of Syracuse as we’ve
made some program changes to better
serve our members and the community.
Effective Jan. 2, the JCC’s Jerome
and Phyllis Charney Early Childhood
Development Program and the After
School Program began operating under
the newly created Children’s Programming
department. This
enhanced structure
has changed very little
about the way these
programs operate.
Only the overall
management structure
Pam Ranieri
Director of
Children’s Programming
Amy Bisnett
Associate Director of
Children’s Programming
has changed to better
serve our members and
families.
“Our new structure
for children’s programs
means that we’re able
to be more flexible
and responsive in the
way we do things,”
said Marci Erlebacher,
JCC executive director.
“Thus, we’ll be able
to do more family
programming with
all ages. We’ll also be able to create a
more cohesive transition for children and
families going from the Early Childhood
Program to our After School Program.”
This change for the JCC was prompted
by former longtime employee Mick Hagan,
Director of Children and Teen Services,
leaving the JCC at the end of last year for
a local teaching position. “We thank Mick
for his outstanding service over the past
10 years and wish him well on his exciting
new position,” said Erlebacher.
The JCC’s new Children’s Programming
department is led by Pamela Ranieri,
Director of Children’s Programming,
and Amy Bisnett, Associate Director of
Children’s Programming. Ranieri had been
the Early Childhood Director for the past
year and she has been with the JCC for
nine years. Bisnett was the Assistant Early
Childhood Director for the past year and
was the JCC’s Director of Children and
Teen Services several years ago.
“Both Pamela and Amy bring a wealth
of knowledge and experience to their new
roles,” said Erlebacher.
“We’re delighted about
the possibilities for this
new structure going
forward.”
Also, as part of the
JCC’s restructuring,
Christine Flynn
Early Childhood
Assistant Director
Joshua Van Alstyne
Assistant Director of
School Age Programs
they’ve promoted
two individuals to fill
key roles. Christine
“Chrissy” Flynn is now
the Early Childhood
Assistant Director
and Josh Van Alstyne
has been promoted to
Assistant Director of
School Age Programs.
Flynn has been with
the JCC for seven
years and has worked
in early childhood for
over 20 years. She started with the JCC as
an early childhood teacher before moving
into her most recent position as daytime
receptionist. Van Alstyne has been with
the JCC for two years and is a seasoned
after school and summer camp counselor.
He will be assisting Ranieri and Bisnett in
overseeing the After School Program.
By Rabbi Paul Drazen
A sense of
community
This is, without doubt, the most celebratory
time of the Jewish year. Unfortunately, Purim
with its hullabaloo, is too often seen as a time
just for children. But tradition tells us that Purim
is so joyous that when the Messianic age
begins, Purim alone, of all celebrations, will
continue as a holiday for the Jewish people.
Purim marks a time of great intrigue. We
watch as a politically-powerful individual
requests to destroy the Jewish people, simply
for being Jews. Mordecai asks his cousin
Esther to intercede with the king to short-circuit
the plan and allow her people to survive.
Esther agrees to ask the king but sets a condition.
Her request is for the Jews in Shushan
to undertake a three-day fast in support of her
daring and potentially life-threatening appeal.
As we know, and celebrate, her mission was
accomplished.
What makes Purim so special? There are many
explanations and understandings, of course.
One reason which stands out for me was that
Esther’s request was for the Jewish community
join with her. As such, the appeal to save
the community was not made by one person
alone; the request for the sake of the community
was made with the support and cooperation
of the community.
That fact can serve as a lesson to us! We can
do well working as individuals; we accomplish
more when we come together as community.
Our community does better when we join together,
work together and celebrate together.
The JCC, as the name Jewish COMMUNITY
Center implies, can serve as a focus, a wonderful
place for us to concentrate the power of
community for the benefit of the Jewish and
general Syracuse communities.
A total of six Kovod Gadol Awards will
be presented this year. The award, which
translates to highest honor or great honor
in Hebrew, will be presented to those who
were instrumental in helping to keep the
JCC safe both during and after last year’s
bomb threats. This year’s recipients are
Susan DeMari, security liaison for local
Jewish organizations; the Federal Bureau
of Investigation; New York State Police;
Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office; Town
of DeWitt Police Department; and Centro.
Two individuals who have made
their mark through service to the entire
Jewish community will be inducted into
the JCC Hall of Fame this year. They are
Shelly Kruth, managing partner with
D’Arcangelo & Co., and Marilyn Pinsky,
former commissioner of Onondaga County
Department of Aging and Youth.
This year’s Leslie Award, the third to
be given since being introduced in 2016,
will be presented to Carolyn Weinberg,
coordinator of PJ Library in CNY, a JCC of
Syracuse program. “The Leslie” recognizes
outstanding commitment and service to
the JCC and to the local community—the
qualities which the award’s namesake,
Leslie London Neulander, personified
throughout her many selfless volunteer
pursuits.
“We are delighted to recognize another
wonderful group of honorees this year,”
said the JCC’s Marci Erlebacher, executive
director. “The amazing service and support
that these individuals and organizations
have given to the JCC and to the local
Jewish community is truly remarkable.”
Purim
• Continued from page 1
The JCC’s Purim Carnival is the
center’s largest indoor community event
held each year. It has become a tradition
for the JCC to hold the celebration as a
way of giving back to the community so
that families can come together for an
afternoon of good quality time. Children
are encouraged to dress in costumes, which
is a Purim holiday custom. Kids dressed in
costumes will receive a prize ticket at the
door. A food and toiletry drive to benefit
the Huntington Family Centers will also be
held. Anyone bringing in an item to donate
will receive a prize ticket.
One of the carnival’s main attractions is
Esther’s Café, which will open for lunch at
11:30 a.m. in the JCC’s Anne and Hy Miller
Family Auditorium. A variety of homecooked,
Va’ad-supervised gourmet kosher
food by the JCC’s chef, Donna Carullo, will
be available. Menu items
will include corned beef
and turkey sandwiches,
hamburgers, hotdogs,
knishes and desserts
featuring the ever
popular hamantashen.
The JCC Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness
Center’s Schayes Family
Gymnasium will be
transformed into a mini-indoor midway
of sorts and feature kids carnival games,
large inflatable bounce toys and slides,
caricature drawings and more. Other event
attractions will include entertainment,
a toddler/preschool bounce house, child
safe ID fingerprinting and
car seat safety checks, PJ
Library activity, a used
book sale and release of
the JCC’s 2018 Camp
summer camp guide.
The JCC of Syracuse
takes pride in putting on
its Purim Carnival each
year thanks to the support
of a small “army” of volunteers. Some of
the many crucial tasks volunteers will
perform include running games, serving
food and helping out in the prize room.
For students seeking to fulfill community
service requirements, volunteering is a
great way to earn credit hours, help out the
JCC and have some fun! Volunteer shifts
are available from 11:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. and
from 1:45 p.m. to 4 p.m.
summer? Come to the
JCC’s Purim Carnival
on Sunday, March
all day long.
The JCC’s summer day camp for
children and teens will run weekdays for
eight weeks from June 25 through August
17. Camp Romano will once again offer
a variety of adventurous and enriching
programs so campers can establish lasting
friendships, gain experience “by doing”
and have loads of fun all summer long.
Last year, the JCC had another very
successful summer camp season. Hundreds
of campers ranging in age from infants to
school-age children to teens had a blast
making friends and memories to last a
lifetime.
Camp enrollment is broken out into
three different age groups. The early
childhood camp is for children 6-weeks old
through entering kindergarten, school-age
camp is open to children entering grades
1–6 and the SyraCruisin’ teen travel camp
is for young teens entering grades 7–10.
FYI INFORMATION
Fire drills
Licensing of our After School Program and
Early Childhood Development Program
with the New York State Office of Children
and Family Services requires that the JCC
of Syracuse conduct monthly fire drills at
various times of the day to accommodate
varying child schedules. The monthly
scheduling of these drills is determined in
September and submitted for approval.
This means that regardless of weather
conditions, all fire drills are conducted as
required. Each and every person in the
building must evacuate during a drill. We
thank you in advance for your cooperation
A Grand Event for all
By Ankur Dang
Her grandma was reading a story for her
but she was a lot more interested in the
goodies that would come afterwards. Was
it going to be a cookie, a brownie or candy?
Isabella Vondeak, of Classroom A at the
JCC’s Jerome and Phyllis Charney Early
Childhood Development Program, didn’t
know yet but she couldn’t wait to find
out. Besides, it was so exciting to have her
grandma in her class. And she had brought
her little sister, Olivia, too. Thankfully,
lunchtime did come soon enough.
“We enjoyed reading the story, didn’t
we?” Candy Vondeak, the girls’ grandma
asks them. They nod happily as they dig
into their food. “And we got story books
to take home,” Isabella chimes in. It is
unclear if Olivia Vondeak understood her
elder sister’s excitement but she jumps up
excitedly with a little clap.
The JCC’s Early Childhood Development
Program celebrated its annual Grand
Event on the 25th and 26th of January.
Grandparents and other special guests
close to the children were invited to have
lunch with their preschooler and to shop
for books for them at the ECDP’s book fair.
Meanwhile, in classroom B, Zypora
Lacirignola is hanging on to every word
of her grandma’s story. Occasionally, she
takes a quick glance around the room to
see what the others are doing. But she is
clearly not interested in the jigsaw puzzle
or the hobby horse. And Meryl Lefkowicz,
her grandma, knows it which is why she is
happy to buy her more books from the fair.
Isadora Cannon hugs her grandmother at ECDP’s
Grand Event this past January.
“I think this is a great idea,” Lefkowicz
said, after closing the book. “She gets to
show off what’s here and we get to buy her
some books, and read and get some quality
time together. She loves having stories read
to her and this is perfect because she has
her friends around her and she has her
grandma reading to her—two of her favorite
things in one place at the same time.”
Amid books, fairy tales, toys and their
favorite foods, the children and their
special guests bonded with each other away
from the busy routines of household duties
and professional lives. For Isabella, the
Grand Event doesn’t come often enough.
“I wish grandma came to my class
every day,” she says with a little pout. Even
though that’s not happening any time
soon, it is probably comforting for her to
know that she’s not the only one with that
particular wish.
PJ Our Way
• Continued from page 5
“We are thrilled to have Rosie on our
team,” said Saskia Swenson Moss, who
directs the Design Team. “Team members
are great role models for tweens who
want to connect to Judaism in fun and
engaging ways.” Saskia went on to explain
that “Rosie’s application video stood out
because of how
engaging it was! She
did her video on a
PJ Our Way book,
The Time Tunnel:
The Dreyfus Affair, by Israeli author Galia
Ron-Feder-Amit. Rosie brought the book
to life with great acting and by telling us
just enough of the story to make us want to
read more!”
Rosie’s mom, Abby Scheer, wrote
to Saskia after hearing that Rosie was
accepted to the Design Team. “Wow!
Thank you so much for sharing that!
Rose will be so happy!” said Abby Scheer.
“Rosie’s grandmother, Ina Scheer was just
telling her that she won an award a few
years ago from the Grinspoon Foundation
for her work as a preschool teacher, so they
have both been recognized by this amazing
organization. Now they have something
very special in common!”
Rosie likes reading and telling
people about books. She started a blog
last year called Rosie’s Reviews (www.
rosiebookreviews.
blogspot.com)
where she shares
her thoughts about
the books she reads.
One of the first books Rosie reviewed
on her blog was of a PJ Library book she
received, All-of-a-Kind Family Downtown,
by Sydney Taylor. She likes working with
other kids and talking to them about
books. She looks forward to meeting new
kids through the Design Team.
Carolyn Weinberg, coordinator for PJ
Library and PJ Our Way in CNY, said, “It
is so exciting to have a local kid like Rosie
315-445-2360 | www.jccsyr.org
on the National PJ Our Way Design Team!
Here in Central New York we currently
have 90 PJ Our Way subscribers since we
became a PJ Our Way Pilot community in
April 2016. This is an amazing opportunity
for Rosie and I know she will do a fantastic
job. I look forward to working with Rosie
to bring new ideas that will enhance our
local programs.”
Churches and Graveyards win JCC Battle of the Bands
By Ankur Dang
The lilting strains of Coldplay’s Viva
La Vida echoed through the Neulander
Family Sports & Fitness Center at the Sam
Pomeranz Jewish Community Center just
after 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 13. It was
a bit unusual. Normally, the Fitness Center
is closed at that hour. Then again, on most
days, musicians aren’t going head to head
with each other as part of a concert in the
Schayes Family Gymnasium.
But this night was different. It was the
JCC’s Battle of the Bands, an event where
five high school bands faced each other
in a truly impressive musical showdown.
And Viva La Vida performed by Sydney
Irving of Marcellus was only the first act
of the competition, which was ultimately
won by Churches and Graveyards, a fellow
Marcellus band whose name describes
their town which has four churches and
three graveyards all within a mile of each
other.
“But we have never practiced in a
graveyard,” said Dan Balman, 17, the
bass guitarist of this classic rock sextet.
“There’s no power in graveyards. Still, I
guess we can get a
generator.”
This
light-hearted
exuberance is
to be expected
after winning
the competition.
The celebration
was made even
sweeter because
the band is only
three months old.
“We’re the new
kid on the block,”
said Christian
Malone, 14, the
drummer and the youngest member of the
group. And while the band is new, some of
the members have played with each other
before. Their ability to work so well with
each other is what led them to form this
band so that they could create original
music and play local events regularly.
One of Churches and Graveyards’
original numbers they played was
2018 Battle of the Bands winner Churches and Graveyards, from Marcellus High School, get their set underway.
Avalanche which, according to Balman,
was written after he was called a “natural
disaster” by his chemistry teacher when
she caught him zoning out in class. “I
always get nice, little nicknames from my
teachers when I do stuff like that,” he said
while insisting that it isn’t something that
happens too often.
The rest of the band includes Tyler
Wetherell,
vocals; Colin
Arnett,
piano/
saxophone;
Ben Carranti,
vocals; and
Jackson
Masters, lead
guitar. They
were awarded
a $200 cash
prize, eight
hours of
studio time at
More Sound
Recording
Studio in Syracuse, and the headline slot at
this year’s Contact Community Services’
TeenFest event.
Vivid Recall, from Liverpool
High School and Baker High School
(Baldwinsville) was the first runner-up
in the competition. Singer-songwriter
Sidney Irving from Marcellus High School
finished in third place.
2018 JCC Battle of the Bands winner Churches and Graveyards
from Marcellus High School. Pictured are the band’s members,
from left, Jackson Masters, lead guitar; Ben Carranti, vocals;
Colin Arnett, piano/saxophone; Dan Balman, bass; Christian
Malone, drums; and Tyler Wetherell, vocals.
“It happens,” Irving said with a smile
on her face. “But performing is in itself
is such a rewarding experience. I live for
the music. That’s what’s most important.
Viva la musica.” With that, she patted
her younger sister Kalissa softly on the
shoulder and they walked out of the venue
with their parents.
The other Battle of the Bands entrants
this year were FM All from Fayetteville-
Manlius High School/Nottingham High
School and Decent from Lafayette Junior-
Senior High School.
Judges for the 2018 Battle of the Bands
were Jose Varona, More Sound Recording
Studio; Bob Staffa (B.O.B), 95X radio
personality; Katrina Tulloch, life and
culture reporter for The Post-Standard;
Greg Minix, Syracuse NewTimes; and Nate
Murphy, Josh Winoski and Dan Wrona
from last year’s winning band Posted.
This year’s Battle of the Bands was
sponsored by More Sound Recording
special funds. The JCC will send an acknowledgement card to
the individual (or next of kin) in whose name the contribution
