NEWSLETTER
April - May 2012
Meetings of the Braun Station West Board of Directors are held the second
Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the Tezel Clubhouse. Residents are
welcome and encouraged to attend.
President’s Corner
by Roger Plasse
Spring has sprung. Weeds here and weeds there. Unlike last year we have been
blessed with rain and a warm winter. Dust off the lawn mower and get out the
weed wacker between our frequent spring showers.
The City has announced a major construction project at the intersection of Tezel
and Guilbeau. Underground utilities, repaving and the removal of our entrance
sign on Tezel are what is involved. New left turns on Guilbeau and Tezel will be
added. The project is still in the planning phase so I can’t tell you yet when
construction will start. We will keep you posted.
Recently we have observed unusual automobile activity, both on the public street
in front of Brigadoon Park as well as in the parking lot behind the pool. This has
been described as individuals parking and walking up to one of the cars and
apparently exchanging unknown items. This is happening as early as 9AM and
continues on and off throughout the day. Also noted was the lengthy parking of
vehicles with individuals inside, both on the street and in the parking lot. If you
observe similar unusual activity in that area, please make note of the vehicles and
license plate information and report it to Tony or Sherry at 680-3009. Also for
your information, vandalism has increased at both pool areas. It may be just
random or worse yet, homegrown.
Did you know that the City Animal Care Services has pets ready for adoption and
it will cost you only $81 which includes a microchip? Animal Care Services is
open seven days per week and since they went from a catch and kill philosophy
to a live release program there are a lot of cats and dogs waiting for someone like
you.
Remember the story or saying that “It takes a village to raise a child”? Well, that
same thought can and does apply to our situation here in Braun Station. The
actions of our Board of Directors and Tony are not enough to spot vandalism, or
unusual and suspicious activities. We need your continuous vigilance. Help us
keep our neighborhood safe.
Welcome to Braun Station West!
CLIPBOARD
by Tony LaFrenier
DEED RESTRICTION POSITION: We recently
hired an individual to help us with deed restriction
violations (6 hours per week).
PROJECTS: We are working on a couple of fairly large
projects. The first project is repairing the back porch/
patio at Tezel. This project has already been approved by
the board. The cement is cracking and chipping in many
places. We will be installing a cement overlay over the
entire porch. The second project is the Tezel picnic area.
We have a serious erosion problem around one of the
picnic table/grilling areas. This is the most popular spot
in the park for barbecues. We are still working on a plan
to fix this problem. We are hoping that this project can
be completed before the pools open for the season.
E-BLAST: Do you want to know about important things
happening in your neighborhood? If so, go to the BSW
web site and sign up for the BSW E-Blast.
BRIGADOON PARK: As mentioned in the President’s
article, we are having a few problems at the park and
along the road in front of the park. We still have security
patrols going through the park on a daily basis. We also
contacted our SAFFE officer and our City Council’s
office to see about getting more police patrols. We also
recently had CPS install a security light along the road to
illuminate that area.
Clubhouse for our once monthly
gatherings. If you are interested in
becoming a full-time player or you just
want to be a substitute, please let me
know. Remember, this is a great
opportunity to meet some of your
neighbors! For more information, please
2012 CITY BOND
On May 12th, 2012 San Antonio voters will have the opportunity to vote on $596 million in capital improvements
— better streets, safer sidewalks, reduced flooding and new and improved parks, libraries, fire stations
and museums — all over the city. This is an opportunity to invest in San Antonio’s future, but only if voters
step up and vote.
Most of the bond money — $465 million, or 78 percent of the total package — will be spent on urgent
infrastructure needs: streets, sidewalks, bridges and improved drainage to reduce flooding. The remainder
will fund new and improved fire stations, libraries, parks and other community and public safety facilities.
No bond monies will be used for downtown street car projects.
The Bond Program will allow the City to make these improvements without raising taxes. The City of
San Antonio currently has the best credit rating of any major city in America — a ‘AAA’ General Obligation
bond rating by all three major credit rating agencies — which means the City can borrow at low interest rates.
As a result, the City can afford these investments and continue to balance the budget without raising the tax
rate.
The 140 projects in the Bond Program were selected by the community. A diverse group of 128 citizens
served on four committees to review and select proposed bond projects. The committees held a total of 20
meetings, which were attended by over 800 residents. The citizen committees submitted their recommended
projects to the City Council, which approved more than 97 percent of the recommendations.
A Citizens’ Oversight Committee will oversee the Bond Program to ensure funds are spent properly.
The 2007-2012 Bond program was completed on time and $47 million under budget using similar accountability
measures, such as the Citizen’s Oversight Committee, a web site to track spending and annual financial
audits.
This investment in our city will create thousands of local jobs. The Bond Program will lay the groundwork
for a brighter future for one of America’s greatest cities. It will improve the quality of life for people
who live here and make San Antonio a more attractive place for businesses to invest and relocate.
Early voting begins April 30, 2012 and Election Day is May 12, 2012.
MAVERICK LIBRARY USED BOOK SALE
The Friends of the Maverick Library will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15, 2012 at Maury Maverick Jr. Branch Library,
8700 Mystic Park, San Antonio.
Most books are priced at $1 or 50 cents, with some special books priced higher
and some bargain-priced at 25 cents. Other items may be sold. The Friend’s
primary fund-raising activity, the sales are held twice a year. Shoppers support
the community library while building their home libraries at bargain prices.
Earnings from past sales were used to purchase furniture, computer and office
equipment and supplies, a camera, office supplies and other items for the
library. Book sales also help fund and provide refreshments for library
programs and activities.
Donations of gently used books are accepted on an ongoing basis at the library circulation
desk. Books that can be used for the library’s collection are added to it, and other donated
books are sold at the used book sale. A few leftover books may be donated after the sale to
other friends groups for their sales or to non-profit groups.
Anyone interested in helping the library, even if not a member of the Friends, is welcome to
attend regular Friends meetings on the first Tuesday each month at the library. Friends
membership applications are available at the circulation desk in the library.
HISTORY OF IMPORTANT ROADS NEAR BRAUN STATION
from Streets of San Antonio by Eric Mapes, 2008
compiled by
THE BRAUN STATION WEST WOMEN’S CLUB
At the October 2011 meeting of the BSW Women’s Club, everyone was divided into groups of
two or three people to read a short history of the important roads near Braun Station, information
included in a book by Eric Mapes titled Streets of San Antonio, shared by Betty Burson, one of
the members.
Each group wrote down important points about “their” street’s history on poster boards and then
presented their findings to everyone else present. Here’s a summary of their findings:
Braun Road: Named after Frederich Braun, born in 1832 and died in 1915. Frederich was one
of five children and was the son of Phillip Braun who was born in Germany in 1810 and died in
1887. He first lived in New Braunfels, but relocated to the Braun Road/1604 area. Frederich
established the Zion Lutheran Church in Helotes, located at Braun and 1604. Frederich Braun was
a prosperous farmer and rancher, with 850 acres, 50 horses and 25 cattle. He had 11 children and
was very active in the Zion Lutheran Church and was a very good upstanding citizen.
Guilbeau Road: Named after Francois Guilbeau, Jr., who was born in France in 1813. He
emigrated to Texas from France in 1836 and was named Mayor Pro Tem of San Antonio in 1841.
He organized ox trains from San Antonio to Mexico and the Gulf Coast before the railroad came
into existence. He married Rosaria Ramon, and they had a daughter, Adele, who married Bryan
Callaghan, a long-time San Antonio mayor. Francois Guilbeau had an extravagant home, owned
1000 acres in Bexar County, and was a legendary marksman. He was also a wine connoisseur who
is credited with saving the European wine industry by having sent Texas mustang grapevine
cuttings to France.
Huebner Road: Named after Joseph Huebner who emigrated from Austria with his wife
Caroline and two children. He chose to settle near the Bandera Road/Poss area instead of in
Fredericksburg or New Braunfels. He was a rancher with 800 acres and did watch repair. His
home, now known as the Huebner-Onion House, was open to stagecoach travelers, soldiers, and
mail carriers. At that time, there were Apaches and Comanches in the area. The Huebner-Onion
House was built over 145 years ago and is currently a project of the Leon Valley Historical
Tezel Road: Named after three German brothers, August, William and Herman Tezel, who
arrived in the 1870s, some 20-30 years later than most German emigrants. Herman was 20 years
old when they settled here, and although they all owned property, it was Herman who owned 800
acres right in this area. Herman Tezel and his descendents were members of the Zion Lutheran
Church in Helotes and were neighbors with the Braun, Evers, Galm, Huebner, and Steubing
families. Herman died in 1932.
Babcock Road: Named after Amos Babcock who never actually lived in San Antonio and was
born in 1811 and died in 1887 in Ashford, Connecticut. He did own a local ranch with 2511 acres,
and Bexar County map records in 1913 show that his second wife, Carrie, owned the acreage by
that time. Babcock Road actually starts at Fredericksburg Road, close to downtown and extends
all the way to Scenic Loop Road, past Helotes.
SPRING GARDENING CHORES
by Joe and Susan Noonan, Bexar County Master Gardeners
(Braun Station West Residents)
It’s springtime and there are lots of gardening chores for April and May. After the bountiful rains, we should
have a spectacular wild flower season. The weeds may be taking over your yard so be diligent about either
spraying or weeding. Consider replacing your turf this year with either hardscaping or drought tolerant ground
covers. Always remember that in south Texas we are either in a drought, going into a drought or recovering
from a drought.
Color
--Warm-season color includes trailing lantanas, cosmos, zinnias, firebush, copper plant, moss rose, purslane,
Dahlberg daisy, purple fountain grass, bachelor buttons and pentas. For shade areas choose from begonia,
impatiens, caladiums, coleus and pentas. Wait on periwinkles until late May.
--Mandevilla, bougainvilleas and hibiscus are great patio plants. Let your bougainvillea get root-bound and
stressed between watering for best blooms.
--Deadhead (pinch/cut off) spent flowers to encourage more bloom.
--Roses should be blooming with color. Continue to fertilize them for continued blooming.
--Let your wildflowers go to seed before mowing.
--Seeds that may be sown directly in the warm soil include amaranthus, celosia, morning glory, sunflowers, and
zinnias.
--Fertilize container plants and hanging baskets plants on a regular basis with a water soluble fertilizer product
and be sure that a slow-release fertilizer such as Osmocote has been mixed into the potting medium at the labelrecommended
amount.
--Remove pansies, snapdragons, dianthus, calendulas, kale and other winter plants when they get ragged.
Ornamentals
--Plant caladium tubers after mid-April when the soil warms and night temperatures are above 60 F. Caladiums
prefer a loose, well drained soil with plenty of organic matter. They thrive in shade with dappled light, and their
colors of green-white, green-pink or green-red fit into almost any landscape.
--Firebush for sun and firespike for full shade are two of the best hummingbird plants. Hibiscus, cigar plant,
dwarf Chinese trumpet creeper, lantana, and firebush on the patio will bring hummingbirds in close for
observation.
Shade Trees and Shrubs
--Do not prune oak trees now. It’s too late. This is prime oak wilt season. If you make any kind of wound from
a trimmer or mower on an oak tree, paint it quickly with some type of latex paint.
--You can still plant new shrubs and trees in April if they are container-grown. Use generous amounts of mulch
on the surface over the roots and water as the soil dries, usually about once per week through the hot summer.
--In heavily shaded parts of the landscape where grass is difficult to maintain, choose one of the well-adapted
ground covers such as English or Algerian ivy, Asian jasmine, or mondo grass.
--Prune pillar or climbing roses, wisteria and Carolina jasmine as soon as they have finished flowering.
Vigorous landscape shrubs will need frequent pruning. These include eleagnus, pyracantha, ligustrum and
photinia. As spring flowering shrubs complete their blooming, do any necessary pruning. Prune to retain the
natural shape of the plant.
Turf Grass
--Proper mowing, efficient watering and good nutrition are the best way to minimize weeds in turf grass. Spot
apply liquid broad-leaf weed killers on warm days to eliminate henbit, chickweed, dandelions, clover and nongrassy
weeds. Read and follow label instructions.
--Fertilize your lawn after the second “real” mowing. A “real” mowing is when you are cutting lawn grass and
not winter weeds. April 15, tax-filing day, is a good target. Use a slow-release lawn fertilizer with a ratio of 3-
1-2 or 4-1-2---Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) such as 15-5-10 or 19-5-9 or 20-5-10.
--Mow St. Augustine at 3 inches, Zoysia at 2 inches and Bermuda at 1.5 inches. Mow when the grass is ⅓
higher than the recommended height. Never cut off more than ⅓ the height of the blades of grass. From www.
BSW WOMEN’S CLUB
Women’s Club Continues 2012 Events
by Barbara Robeau
The BSW Women’s Club is happily engaged in activities for Spring 2012.
The February 14 meeting was a BUNCO party hostessed by Brenda Talley and Gayle
Venticinque. Before the games, Brenda Talley, President, conducted a short business
meeting; then Susan Noonan, member and master gardener, offered tips and hand-outs
concerning bulbs, tomatoes, and raised beds. Brenda designed and duplicated Valentine score
cards for BUNCO. Prize winners were the following: Amy Gamber, Most Buncos; Sheryl
Babiak, Most Games; Teresa Stover, 2nd Most Games; Lina Tan, Most Losses; and Marilyn
Lott, Last Bunco.
The March 13 meeting featured a demonstration of flower arranging by Gail Folk, owner of
FLOWER ME FLORIST located at 7729 Tezel Road at Mainland. Hostesses for the evening
were Barbara Robeau, Jill Farmer, Mary Lipin, and Nancy Coronado. The arrangements Gail
and her designer created were awarded as the evening’s door prizes. FLOWER ME FLORIST
is heartily recommended by Barbara and Mary, Gail’s frequent customers. Before the
demonstration, Brenda Talley conducted a short business meeting; Marilyn Lott gave the
treasurer’s report; and Betty Burson, programs chairperson, announced that the April 10
meeting will be the club’s traditional potluck supper! Betty added that the May 8 meeting, the
year’s closing activity, will be a “happy hour” at a local restaurant. At that event the name of
the winner of the club’s $500 college scholarship and the slate of club officers for the 2012-13
season will be announced.
The Women’s Club awards annually a $500 college scholarship to a BSW high school senior.
This year 11 students applied for the award. Four finalists were interviewed for the prize, and
the winner was chosen on March 22.
The Women’s Club is always open to new members. Club members enjoy activities such as
parties, games, demonstrations, crafts, fund-raisers, and guest speakers. The organization’s
main focus is service to the BSW community. For example, members decorate the clubhouse
Christmas tree; serve refreshments at the January homeowners’ annual meeting and at the
May BSW picnic; donate to local charities; and offer long-time and newly-arrived residents
alike the opportunity for friendships with other neighborhood women. Members meet in the
Tezel Clubhouse on the second Tuesday of each month, September through April, at 7 P.M.
The venue for the May meeting/celebration is a local restaurant. Dues are $20 per year.
Other groups promoted by the Women’s Club are the “Lunch Bunch” coordinated by Jill
Farmer, and the Book Club and the Day Trippers Club initiated and headed by Cindy
Morawski.
For more information about the BSW Women’s Club, interested prospective members can
phone Brenda Talley at 520-7401 or Barbara Robeau at 520-2861.
ARE YOU PREPARED?
by Neal Nye
Very shortly after the delivery of the last newsletter, I received a call from my daughter. She told me she knew I
was just trying to help our neighbors by dispensing information that would help them in the event of an
emergency; however, she then said that some of our neighbors might be thinking that “you’re a doomsday
survivalist nut case”! I thanked her profusely for her insight and told her there would be two or three more
articles. As for being a nut case, I’m not, but I do believe you don’t get ready after you have to be ready!
Now here are some items for you to consider for your emergency evacuation pack:
Depending on what the emergency is the normal water supply may be disrupted or contaminated. Consider
some kind of water purification system. There are several different methods available and they are all
portable.
You can’t make the best decisions for your family if you don’t have any information; therefore, an
emergency radio with NOAA channel or channels and alert capabilities, battery powdered, with a hand crank
dynamo for recharging is certainly something to consider. Some come with a built in flashlight and USB
ports capable of recharging a cell phone or Blackberry.
A good flashlight with extra batteries is always a good idea.
Consider a food supply for at least a few days. Freeze dried is the easiest to carry and some brands have a
shelf life of up to 25 years. Decide how much you want to pack for your family or group.
You should have a method for starting a fire for cooking and or warmth if necessary. There are several
devices available that will reliably start a fire.
You might want a tool with multifunction capability. The kind that has several tools combined, with: knife
blade, pliers, flat and phillips head screwdrivers, file, etc. There are many to choose from.
A First Aid kit is essential. They range from the very basic to quite elaborate. If you don’t have any medical
training, you might want to stay basic; if you have training you might want to get a kit on the high end. You
also might want to include items that are not usually in the off the shelf kits such as: non-prescription drugs,
aspirin, or non-aspirin pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medications, antacids, thermometer, etc.
Another very useful item is moist towelettes. While on one of his deployments to Iraq, my eldest son was in
an area where there was very little water, none available for bathing. They relied exclusively on baby wipes
for personal hygiene.
Make sure you go over all special need items any member of your group or family member needs, such as baby
formula, diapers, blood pressure monitor, etc.
Most if not all of the items listed can be found at many of the mega sporting good stores in San Antonio.
I purposely didn’t list brand names or recommend any particular make or model of anything. Do your own
research and decide what would be the best for your group and or family.
It will take some time and effort to make sure your pack is up to date; however, it could be some of the most
valuable time you’ve ever spent.
YOGA CLASSES
Braun Station West is offering a YOGA class for residents. It will be every
Wednesday morning from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Tezel Clubhouse. Yoga
instructor Anna Quintana will teach the class for free. This class is designed for
beginners and those with experience. For more information, contact:
