President’s Message
THE POWER OFW
Here it is again — another League year! It’s always exciting to begin the year with a new committee to
work with, new friends to make and new topics to learn and think about, as we collectively continue on
our mission to train women volunteers to make a difference in our community.
For my first President’s letter, I would like to outline the 2005-2006 Board’s theme, the Power of WE,
and what it can mean for you. Over the past 13 years, I continue to be just amazed at the time and
commitment we all choose to spend doing our community work, and the difference it makes! Whether
we’re all coming together to put on our beautiful The Spirit of Giving Holiday Boutique SM , or getting a
new project off the ground like the Nutrition Task Force or recruiting and launching a new Provisional
class, we all know that it really does take the power of us ALL to make these things happen with our
unique JLPA•MP style and impact.
However, the Power of WE is broader than just our active community; think about the power of engaging:
Our Sustainers
Did you know that Sustainers make up over 60% of our entire international organization, including our
League? Remember that Sustainers sustain our league, and their rich community experience is something
we hope to reference and utilize throughout the year. I hope we can continue to reach out and involve our
Sustainers, so you will want to be League members for a lifetime.
Our Families
We all have important people in our lives that share us with the League.
Wouldn’t it be nice if they could see first-hand the work we do, the
impact we have and how much fun we have when we’re doing this?
I would like to challenge us to find creative ways to include our
families and friends in our community work (and play)!
Our Employers
The recent membership survey showed that now 80% of us are
working for pay outside the home. I encourage you to look into
your own employers for possible foundations and matching
grant funds, and find ways to tap into them. Look for the
Fund Development task force to lay out a long-term fund
development strategy starting this year, utilizing the power of
our employers as just one element.
These are just a few ideas of tapping into the Power of WE.
What are your ideas? I look forward to seeing you around
the Gatehouse and in the community this year.
Have a wonderful summer and enjoy watching
the Power of WE generate in your midst!
2005 President’s Cup Winner
Michele Kirsch
By Sally Falkenhagen, 2004-2005 President
At this year’s Annual Meeting, the
JLPA•MP awarded the prestigious
Presidents’ Cup to Michele Kirsch. The
President’s Cup is the highest honor an
Active member can receive. The Presidents’
Cup selection committee includes the
current President and President-Elect, as
well as the three immediate Past Presidents.
Selecting the volunteer who will receive the
Cup is always a difficult decision because
our League is fortunate to have so many
outstanding members.
Michele exemplifies the volunteer traits
most treasured by the Junior League. Her
vision and planning ensure the success of
all her endeavors. She is highly motivated
to do the very best job, and she motivates
her fellow volunteers to achieve their best
as well. Michele’s leadership guarantees
smooth execution and an enjoyable
experience for everyone working with her.
Her professionalism engenders confidence,
and her amenable manner inspires loyalty.
Her events have a style and a panache that
attract sell-out attendance. Michele always
has the League’s best interest in mind and
represents the League in the very best light
2003-2004 President Suzi Tinsley with Kay
Eagan at Kay’s farewell luncheon.
PIPER•Summer2005
throughout our community. We are
so glad to know her!
Michele began her League career
on the Kids on the Block Committee,
a past project that taught third grade
students tolerance for differences
by using puppets. She has served
on the Provisional Committee,
the Endowment Fund Board, the
Cookbook Committee, the Spring
Gala Committee, and of course the
Holiday Boutique Committee. This
past year, Michele, her Co-Chair Lisa
Pedersen, and their team announced
stellar financial results for The Spirit
of Giving Holiday Boutique SM 2004,
contributing a spectacular $102,500
to the JLPA•MP.
Michele shares her fund raising
talent and expertise with several
nonprofit organizations: RAFT,
The Tech Museum (started by the
JLPA•MP), the Children’s Health
Council, the Community Foundation
of Silicon Valley and the Innocence Project.
Michele earned her J.D. from Santa Clara
University in 2001. She and her husband,
A Letter of Thanks from Kay Eagan
JLPA•MP Bookkeeper, 2001-2005
JLPA•MP Board of Directors, Members, Staff and Friends:
I want to thank everyone I worked with over the past four years for
making my time with the JLPA•MP very special and some of the most
wonderful years I spent as an employee. I always found the League
members to be warm and encouraging, bright and visionary. But, most
of all, I always felt appreciated. It was a pleasure to know you and
become a small part of your vision. I will never forget you. Thank you,
everyone, for allowing me to be a part of you.
Sincerely,
Kay Eagan
Volunteer Extraordinaire
Tracey Prim
By Jean Limbach, 2005-06 President-Elect
Many League volunteers groaned when
they heard that Tracey Prim was moving
with her husband, Craig, to their dream
home in the Sierra foothills. Tracey is an
exceptional volunteer, having devoted many
years to the League.
Tracey began as a Provisional in 1988.
Since then, she has spread her magic across
the League in some key positions such as
Nominating Chair, Provisional Committee,
Membership Outreach, Finance VP and
Membership VP. Furthermore, Tracey has
worked on all of the fund raisers in the
Treasury arena each and every year of her
tenure. And if you cannot calculate sales
tax in your head, you will understand what
an asset it is to have her around.
One of Tracey’s greatest accomplishments
is her work on the Endowment Fund in
which she has been an acticve participant
since its inception. While we are grateful
for the financial future she helped to
ensure, we are even more appreciative of her
Tracey Prim with Sally Falkenhagen at last year’s
The Spirit of Giving Holiday Boutique SM .
inspirational leadership as a volunteer in
the community. Her friends had this to say
about her:
3 I consider Tracey a mentor and
Junior Leaguer extraordinaire.
3 When Tracey takes on a project,
she takes it on with enthusiasm,
competence, and patience. This means
that the project gets done with out
any complaints, it gets done right and
it gets done completely.
3 At the end of my Provisional year,
Tracey was awarded the President’s
Cup. That same night I thought—
that’s the kind of member I want to be.
3 If you want a job done right, then
ask Tracey to do it. She launches
an endeavor, builds it to capacity,
evaluates it, refines it and then teaches
others how to do it.
3 Tracey has always been a “go to”
person and you know that if she takes
on an assignment, it will be done
extraordinarily well.
3 Tracey has left a remarkable legacy of
work that will help future generations
of Leaguers.
3 Tracey has given her time and talent
in a way that can never be duplicated
by another member. She is the “grande
dame” of the Junior League.
3 Doing is Tracey’s signature trait!
Her sentences usually start with
“I’d be happy to...” She is also a
wonderful mentor.
Clearly, Tracey has left an indelible mark
on our League and our community.
Problem-solver, visionary, cheerleader:
Tracey is an amazing asset to our
collective legacy. Lucky for us, she has
agreed to make herself available by email
and telephone to field our requests
for her valuable advice. Perhaps we all
should put her on our speed-dial? n
Carrie Du Bois
Named San Carlos
Citizen of the Year
By Anne Clark, 2004-2005
Sustainer Committee Co-Chair
Sustainer Carrie Du Bois was
recently nominated as “Citizen
of the Year” by the San Carlos
Chamber of Commerce and was
honored at a special recognition
dinner on Wednesday, June 8
at the Radisson Hotel in San
Mateo. The special award
recognizes Carrie’s volunteer
service as Co-President and
President of the San Carlos
Educational Foundation. Under
Carrie’s leadership, the San
Carlos Educational Foundation
grew from $60,000 to nearly
$400,000 in only three short
years. She attributes her
Junior League experience
and training to this wonderful
community success. Carrie and
her extraordinary track record
represent the very best of all the
League has to offer.
Congratulations!
Fund Raisers
Rosy Results from
the Spring Gala
By Karen Osborn, 2004-2005 Spring Gala Assistant Chair
It’s not everyday that you can be transported to Paris, France
via a 45-minute drive up the Peninsula. But such was the case
on Saturday, April 9 for hundreds of League partygoers. Hosted
at the exquisite Four Seasons Hotel in San Francisco, the Spring
Gala Committee—led by Chair Karin Riley—creatively blended
glamour, haute cuisine, and good old-fashioned fun into an
evening to be remembered.
La Vie en Rose: An Evening in Paris began
with a cocktail reception and silent auction
followed by a three-course dinner. While
partaking in culinary delights and lively
chatter, guests were surrounded by the
masterful floral designs of Jun Pinon, Inc.,
a large-scale slide show of scenes from the
City of Lights, and of course, mood-defining
candlelight. “Sophistication” and “romance”
were certainly the most popular buzzwords of
the night.
The live auction, expertly navigated by
professional auctioneer Sandy Hochman,
raised the excitement level even higher. The Fiji
Island resort package and the dinner for eight
at the Village Pub proved to be big winners.
However, the all-inclusive getaway to the U.S.
Virgin Islands aboard a private yacht truly
caused the partygoers’ collective adrenalin to
flow. Sold for over $10,000, the yacht package
is one auction lot destined to go down in the
League’s history books. The live entertainment
continued as guests danced to the wildly
popular sounds of the Cheeseballs.
This year’s theme was partly chosen in
an effort to reflect the very positive—even
“rosy”—impact the League can have on
our community. Therefore, it is with great
pleasure that we are able to announce our
financial results. Combined earnings from
the live and silent auctions, ticket sales, and
raffle drawing yielded a net profit just over
$101,000 (exceeding the Committee’s own
forecasts by more than 40%). According to
2004-2005 President Sally Falkenhagen,
“This contribution goes directly toward a very
serious mission, as the women of the League
work together to build a better community.”
Such a large extravaganza could not have
been made possible without the tireless and
generous efforts of so many people. As ever,
we truly appreciate the support of our major
corporate partners including the Four Seasons
Hotel, Tiffany & Co., and See’s Candies.
Most importantly, to the League Board of
Directors, underwriters, and volunteers,
a heartfelt ...
Merci!
The Endowment Fund
Values Your Support
By Carrie Drake, 2003-2005 Endowment
Fund Chair and Eugenie Atherton,
2004-2006 Endowment Fund Secretary
Thanks to your support, the JLPA•MP
Endowment Fund is growing stronger every
year! Because the Fund’s contribution to
the League’s annual budget is based on
the amount actually in the fund, the more
donations received, the higher the annual
return to the League. Given the fact that
Endowment Fund contributions can only
be used for community programs, every
extra dollar you donate helps increase the
League’s ability to fund community projects
and grants, now and in the future. n
Investment of the Endowment Fund
By Sally Falkenhagen, 2004-2005 President
Since its inception, the League’s Endowment
Fund has been invested in mutual funds
through a pool of funds at the Peninsula
Community Foundation. As is typical,
the 75%/25% equity mutual fund/cash
allocation yielded very good returns during
strong years in the stock market, but
negative returns during down years.
Overseeing these investments are League
members who join the Endowment Fund
Board for two years. Unfortunately, this
term is too short to develop the expertise
and confi dence required to manage the
allocation of League funds invested through
the Peninsula Community Foundation. As
such, the Board’s Finance and Investment
Committee explored ways to remedy this
problem. Th e preferred solution was to
fi nd an investment manager who met the
following criteria:
• Utilizes broadly diversifi ed asset classes
to mitigate the volatility of
the portfolio
• Handles reallocation as part of the
investment management service
• Provides easy-to-understand, up-todate
on-line access to reports
• Off ers a stable relationship with a solid
fi rm to compensate for the League’s
term limits
• Charges low total fees
In short, the Finance and Investment
Committee sought state-of-the-art
investment strategies, provided by highly
respected professionals.
Th e Committee found the best
alternative in the Multi-Asset Fund
off ered through TIFF, the Investment
Fund for Foundations (www.TIFF.org).
TIFF was formed in 1991 by a network of
foundations as an investment cooperative.
Th eir core mission is to improve the
investment returns of endowed charities.
Th eir strategy is to provide a series of multimanager
investment vehicles, as well as
resources aimed at enhancing fi duciaries'
knowledge of investing.
Th e Multi-Asset Fund (“MAF”)
off ers broadly diversifi ed asset classes,
non-correlating investments, dynamic
reallocation, top money managers, and a
sophisticated investment strategy. MAF
aims to achieve an average annual growth
rate equal to the Consumer Price Index
(CPI) + 5% annually. In other words, the
investment is targeted to keep up with
infl ation while producing a real growth
rate of 5% per year. Furthermore, TIFF has
excellent on-line reporting and extensive
educational and training materials available
on their website.
MAF has earned very respectable
investment returns and shown impressively
low volatility. Th erefore, the Committee
recommended that the Endowment Fund
assets be moved from the Peninsula
Community Foundation to the Multi-Asset
Fund at TIFF. Th e Endowment Fund Board
of Directors approved the change during
their March meeting, and the League
Board followed suit at their April meeting.
As part of the recommendation process,
the Finance and Investment Committee
of the Endowment Fund Board and the
League’s Finance Council combined
and updated the Investment Policies
of the Endowment Fund and of the
League. If you are interested in reviewing
the new Investment Policy Statement,
please contact Board Finance VP Pam
Williams (pam@navigating wealth.
com). If you have questions about TIFF
or the recommendation process, please
Back Room Makeover at The Shop
By Anne Vitullo, 2004-2005 The Shop Committee Chair
Shop Committee members, Shop staff and
some “at large” League volunteers all came
together on Saturday, March 19, to help
reorganize the back room at The Shop. Our
goals were three-fold:
• Reorganize the back room to create
better storage and a check-in area
for donations
• Create better access to existing storage
• Ensure the safety and security of Shop
staff and volunteers
Our intrepid group of volunteers assembled
storage racks and bookcases, moved
furniture, reorganized supplies, dusted
all of our Shop displays and, over
the course of the day, worked a
remarkable transformation!
Special thanks to the following
people for making it happen:
• Sustainer Cynthia Beeger
who lent her design and
organizational skills to plan
the back room workspace
• League husbands Jim McVey
(Leigh Metzler’s husband)
and Jon Poe (Anne Vitullo’s
husband) who came equipped
AFTER
Community Projects
What is the Healthy Families Task Force?
A Proactive Approach to a Growing Problem
By Stephanie Ekoniak, Healthy Families Task Force Co-Chair
The Healthy Families Task Force is a
group of ten JLPA•MP members dedicated
to combating one of the most prevalent
social issues today: childhood obesity and
physical inactivity. Over the next year, the
Task Force will exist as a “pilot” project
exploring a variety of programs and projects
to determine which full-term project will
have the most impact in our community.
The Task Force will address the growing
problem of childhood obesity and physical
inactivity using a three-pronged approach
by targeting the individual, the family and
the community. Specifically, the Task Force
will explore three ways of affecting change
around this issue in East Palo Alto:
Early Intervention with Children:
Icreasing children’s awareness about the
implications of poor nutrition and lack of
physical activity early on can change habits
for a lifetime. By providing children with
strategies for making better choices, we will
create healthy life-long habits and reverse
this threatening trend.
The Healthy Families Task Force
will partner with Ravenswood School
District to launch the SMART curriculum
in Willow Oaks Elementary School.
The SMART curriculum, developed at
Stanford, is a proven 15-lesson program
aimed at improving the health and quality
of life for both children and their parents.
In addition, the Task Force will partner
with East Side Preparatory (ESP) High
School in East Palo Alto to administer the
lessons. Volunteer ESP students will teach
the lessons to the students throughout the
school year. JLPA-MP Task Force members
14
will be on site to mentor the ESP students
as they teach the class throughout the year.
They will also work to ensure the students
have a rewarding leadership experience
while earning community credit for school.
Family Involvement: The SMART
program reaches the family through
newsletters accompanying each lesson
plan. The Task Force will incorporate the
entire family into the ‘healthy lifestyle’
curriculum by organizing and holding
family cooking nights, parent nutrition
classes and family recreation programs.
Community Awareness: To further
enhance the “healthy lifestyle” message, the
Task Force will create and implement two
community events, in partnership with Get
Fit EPA (an East Palo Alto collaborative
(continued from page 14)
focused on increasing the health of the
community), to provide support and
education around nutrition and fitness.
Why a Task Force?
The objective for the Task Force in the
coming year is to create a full-fledged
JLPA•MP project for the 2006-2007
League year. The 2005-2006 Project
Development Committee recommended
the creation of a Task Force around this
issue because a single project partner
has not yet been identified. While the
Task Force is partnering with various
organizations (Ravenswood School District,
East Side Prep, Stanford, Get Fit EPA), this
year will be a “pilot” period to explore what
type of partnership, and which partner(s),
make the most sense for the long-term
success of a League project.
Why Childhood Obesity?
Over the past three decades, the childhood
obesity rate has more than doubled for
preschool children aged 2-5 years and
adolescents aged 12-19 years.
• 34 percent of children from lower income
households are obese, compared to 19
percent from high income households
• From 1986 to 1998, obesity among Black
and Hispanic children increased by more
than 120 percent, compared to about 50
percent among white children
• The Ravenswood City School District’s
Annual California Physical Fitness Test
showed 50 percent of fifth and seventh
graders are overweight or at risk of
becoming overweight
No one can ignore the growing concern
that we face as a nation. On a daily basis
we hear about obesity rates being on the
rise in all segments of the population and
the CDC (Center for Disease Control)
has declared obesity a national epidemic.
Two contributing factors to this growing
problem are that we have become a “fast
food nation”, valuing convenience over
nutrition; and that urban settings are
no longer conducive to children playing
outdoors to get their much-needed
physical activity. Time outside has been
replaced with time in front of a screen: TV,
computer, and video games. As a result
Rosalie Rendu Center’s
Cinco de Mayo Fiesta Celebrates
Students and Volunteers
By Shelley Kilday, Rosalie Rendu Center Committee Member
Cinco de Mayo celebrations traditionally
commemorate the Mexican Army’s historic
victory over French invaders at the Battle of
Puebla in 1862. However, the annual Cinco
de Mayo party at the Rosalie Rendu Center
is decidedly a celebration of hardworking
students, volunteers, and their families.
League volunteers Michelle Nicoli, Ana
Aspinall, and Tracy Van Ligten helped
Sister Trinitas Hernandez (Sister T)
plan this year’s festivities. Current and
former students, volunteers and residents
of Carriage Manor were all invited to the
event—thereby turning the day into a
grandiose reunion of sorts with about 150
people in attendance (some from as far
away as Morgan Hill and Manteca).
With chicken mole, homemade salsa,
pico de gallo, brownies, and cookies, the
children are being diagnosed with high
blood pressure, type II diabetes and other
“adult” conditions related to poor eating
habits and little physical activity.
Why is this a Project for the JLPA•MP?
The Task Force is passionate about
addressing this issue and about identifying
gourmet delights were well worth the price
of admission (one dish to share). “The
carne asada was phenomenal,” stated next
year’s Co-Chair Wendy Garrish. The
band played for several hours and everyone
danced the wildly amusing “broom dance,”
including Sister T. Face painting and two
piñatas occupied the children for hours
while students and volunteers alike enjoyed
the opportunity to celebrate their efforts of
the past eight months and practice English
in a social setting.
The 2004-2005 Rosalie Rendu
Committee would like to thank Co-Chairs
Dawn Loeb Sullivan and Trish Cook for
all their hard work. It was an enriching
and inspiring year. Congratulations and
best wishes to incoming Co-Chairs Wendy
Garrish and Suzanne Zaino. n
Bring Me A Book Foundation and First Teachers
at AJLI Annual Conference in New Orleans
By Donna Hall, 2004-2005 First Teachers Co-Chair
For the second year in a row, Bring Me A
Book Foundation (BMABF) was invited
to attend the 83 RD Association of Junior
Leagues International Inc. (AJLI) annual
conference. Junior League leaders from
Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom and
the United States gathered in New Orleans
from May 11 through May 14. They
celebrated “the remarkable work of Leagues
across the Association and shared in
stimulating workshops and plenary sessions
to better enable us to do what we do best…
We Make The World A Better Place.”
Donna Hall, 2004-2005 First Teachers
Co-Chair, and Julie Fowlkes, BMABF
trainer, spoke with hundreds of interested
League leaders regarding BMABF itself
and the tremendously rewarding work
PIPER•Summer2005
that the First Teachers community project
has brought to the JLPA•MP. BMABF
has committed itself to sponsoring the
formation of First Teachers projects
through the network of Junior Leagues
across the nation. Through many
discussions between Donna, Julie and other
League leaders it is very apparent that First
Teachers is a great fit for many Leagues.
Of the many conference highlights, the
raffle drawing was particularly exciting.
While a Bill Blass opera coat and a Kate
Spade bag were big hits, the BMABF
bookcase library (replete with a selection
of quality children’s literature) drew the
greatest interest. The winner was Trish
Dean from the Junior League of London!
The six attendees from Great Britain
16
immediately rushed over to the BMABF
booth and began taking pictures with
Donna and requesting information for their
League newsletter.
As the conference wound to a close,
BMABF was left boxing up its booth
materials and deliberating over the best
and most cost effective way to ship an
entire bookcase library to London—quite
a dilemma. Fortunately, Sara Levin from
Lehigh, Pennsylvania offered the assistance
of her husband who just happens to work
for Roadway Express and could offer the
most economical shipping method from
New Orleans to London. Thank goodness
for the generosity of fellow Leaguers! n

DIAD Joins Rebuilding Together
for Phenomenal Results
By Dulcy Freeman, 2004-2005 DIAD Committee Member
“MOVE THAT BUS!” The volunteers
screamed just as Ty Pennington does
on ABC television’s hit series Extreme
Make-Over Home Edition. On Saturday,
April 30, JLPA•MP volunteers joined
forces with Lyon’s Club volunteers to
tackle a Rebuilding Together project: the
refurbishment of Cassandra Forbes’ home
in East Palo Alto. The home was originally
built in 1992 by Habitat for Humanity and
was in great need of a facelift. The results
produced by Rebuilding Together may not
be as large scale as those seen on TV, but to
one East Palo Alto family, they were both
remarkable and greatly appreciated.
Cassandra Forbes’ noteworthy
background is a success story halted by
physical misfortune. More than 10 years
ago, this single parent decided that she
wanted to provide a better life for her two
boys. She enrolled in a program at Cañada
College to acquire a GED and to become a
Certified Administrative Assistant. Upon
completion, she secured a job with Cañada
College where she worked for several years
until a work injury left her unable to use
her arms to accomplish everyday tasks.
She has since survived on meager disability
stipends. And consequently, her home’s
maintenance needs have gone unattended.
To get this project underway, Lyon’s
Club volunteer Jim Bigelow stepped up to
the plate as House Captain. “It has been a
true joint effort,” explained Jim. “Different
contractors donated their time to address
myriad issues: an electrician to fix some
hazards, a plumber to install a lightly used
Bosch dishwasher and an installer to put
in new carpets and linoleum. The Junior
League was instrumental in getting this
all done and it’s been remarkable.” Done
in a Day (DIAD) Committee Member
Dulcy Freeman reported, “One DIAD
member generously paid for the linoleum,
another leveraged contacts with contractors
to do pro bono work, and the Committee
arranged for the donation of two beds,
sheets and bedding, window treatments and
a microwave oven.”
“This is hands-on hard work,” explained
one 80-year old Lyons Club volunteer
committed to helping. Clad in sturdy work
clothes, volunteers spent the day clearing
weeds from the lawn, hauling away excess
garbage, fixing a damaged fence, cleaning
and painting both interior and exterior
walls with a fresh coat of color. “This has
been extremely rewarding on many levels.
You can see great results and we’ve had the
opportunity to befriend Cassandra Forbes,”
said 2004-2005 DIAD Chair Emily Wu.
“Our volunteers are the best!” cheered on
DIAD Committee Member Nancye Beck.
DIAD Committee Members
Laurie Brown and Dulcy Freeman,
homeowner Cassandra Flores and
Committee Member Nancye Beck.
“I am so thankful for the work that
Rebuilding Together has done!” exclaimed
Cassandra. “The Lord has truly blessed me
to bring such wonderful people here to help
me make it a nicer place. I used to just call
this my house and was not comfortable to
have friends or relatives come over. But now
I am proud to call it my HOME. Now it
is so nice and clean. I am going to have a
BBQ and invite every one of the volunteers
backthis is how I can thank them!”
Three weeks later, Cassandra updated the
DIAD Committee, “I am really enjoying
my home and in the last weeks I’ve even
had people knock on my door to ask if it is
for sale!” n
Project Development Grants: Round 2
By Stephanie Ekoniak, 2004-2005 Project Development Committee Co-Chair
For the second round of grant making this
year, the Project Development Committee
received 15 grant applications from various
organizations requesting over $95,000 in
funding. Given the funding balance for
the year was $12,400, we had some tough
decisions to make as all the applicants
were compelling. The League Board of
Directors followed the Project Development
Committee’s recommendations and
approved the following deserving grantees:
Marine Science Institue (MSI) ...... $4,200
MSI’s mission is to cultivate a responsibility
for the natural environment and human
communities through interdisciplinary
science education by:
• Placing students of all ages in direct
contact with the natural environment;
• Emphasizing the interdependence of all
living things, their connection to the
physical environment, and the special
responsibilities of humans to
the environment;
• Facilitating active learning through the
use of observation, critical thinking,
and problem-solving skills in a
cooperative setting;
• Instilling confidence, encouraging
involvement, and inspiring
accomplishment by providing
positive role models.
PIPER•Summer2005
The majority of the funds provided to MSI
will be used for their Discovery Voyage
Program in which elementary through
college-aged students take a 4-hour
exploratory boat ride around the Bay and
focus on ichthyology (the study of fish),
plankton (drifting microscopic plants and
animals), hydrology (the study of water)
and the benthos (bottom of the bay).
The remaining funds will support the
Outreach Program which was developed for
pre-K through 12 th graders. These programs
take sharks, fish, crabs, and other marine
life out to schools (especially low income
schools) using a trailer-mounted aquarium.
Camp Kesem ................................. $3,600
Camp Kesem provides a safe, supportive
and exciting camp experience for children
who have a parent who has died from
cancer, is currently in treatment for cancer,
or is in remission from cancer. Campers
have the unique opportunity to build
friendships and gain strength from peers
facing similar challenges.
Camp Kesem is a free, weeklong
overnight, summer camp for children
ages 6-15—regardless of race, religion,
nationality or financial status. Due to the
complexity of emotions, it is difficult for
these children to find peers with whom
they can relate, resulting in feeling isolated,
angry, guilty or fearful. Camp Kesem was
18
created to address the needs of this unique
and underserved population. This year 95
camper slots will be open and 50 counselors
will volunteer to provide a 2:1 camper to
counselor ration.
Stepping Stones
Across the Digital Divide .............. $3,600
Stepping Stones Across the Digital Divide,
operated by the San Mateo County Office
of Education, provides direct services
to 50 Hispanic females in grades 3 to 6
at Garfield Charter School and Cesar
Chavez Schools. The educational goals of
the project are: (1) developing students’
competence in using computers and other
informational technologies to increase
educational achievement; and (2) working
with parents to develop an electronic
learning environment in the home to
support their children’s education.
Funds provided by JLPA•MP will be
used to provide Internet access for 10
families in the program for a full year.
Childhood Matters .............................$1,000
Childhood Matters provides a call-in radio
broadcast each Sunday to the Greater Bay
Area to provide engaging and informative
parent education. Each weekly broadcast—
in both English and Spanish—focuses
on a particular topic related to positive
parenting, children’s health, child safety
and child development. Special attention
is paid to the experience of traditionally
under-served and vulnerable communities.
You too can tune into Childhood Matters
on Sunday mornings from 9–10 a.m. on
98.1 KISS FM (English) and from 8–9 a.m.
on 1170 AM, radio KLOK (Spanish).
In the 2004-2005 League year, the Project
Development Committee granted a total of
$25,000 in funding to seven organizations
that we felt most closely fit our mission
statement and resulted in the greatest
impact. The next grant deadline is
August 1, 2005. Information about
submitting a grant can be found on the
JLPA•MP website. n

Provisionals Make an Impact!
By Courtney Charney, 2004-2005 Provisional Class Member
The Provisional Class finished off their first year with a bang! Their end of
the year project was a resource fair targeted at those local communities most
in need of information on housing, healthcare, childcare, education, and
other vital topics. More than 150 people attended the all-day fair held at the
East Palo Alto Boys and Girls Club. Families gathered information from
over 20 vendors such as Rosalie Rendu Center, Ravenswood Family Health
Center, and Children’s Health Council. Even children joined in on the fun,
as Provisionals set up craft and game stations to entertain the young ones
while their parents gathered information.
Special thanks goes to AGS, Albertson’s, Hobees, ICI Dulux Paints/Ralph
of expressing the feeling of social responsibility
for the conditions that surrounded us.
We have the
Sustainer “Choices” Workshop
and Dinner a Huge Success
By Karen Ross, 2004-2005 Sustainer Director
Over 130 Sustainers enjoyed stimulating
workshops and festive fellowship at the
annual Sustainer dinner event on March 1
at the Menlo Circus Club. The afternoon
workshops, developed around the event’s
theme, Choices…Being Our Best, were
a popular addition
this year. Exceptional
workshop presenters
and topics included:
Naomi Chavez, Building
Effective Relationships;
Mary Lonergan, Taking
Charge of Your Health;
Jane Tight, The Heart
Voice; and Dr. Dean
the Anti-aging Industry.
But, of course, the social hour, as always,
was the highlight of the day for most.
they hadn’t recently seen and getting to
know new acquaintances they met in the
day’s workshops.
stay more conscious of their choices by
frequently asking
themselves: Does my
Am I putting my time
and energy into the
areas that are most
important to me? Am I
giving too much power
to negative influences?
All in all, it was a
fun and informative
day. In fact, a number
have already indicated
interest in serving on next year’s Sustainer
