Sustainable Lutheran
SchoolS Initiative
By Dick Weniger, Director of eDucation ServiceS
In the Fall of 2007 I received a phone call that led to a seat at the table at the M.J. Murdock Trust’s
L “Christian Schools Initiative.” The Trust had done research on the elements of a sustainable Christian
school in the Northwest and invited our district and other Christian school organizations to present
proposals on the Initiative. On behalf of the district I was pleased to join the discussion. Following the
development of the proposal and submitting it to the Trust we were informed that we would receive a three
year grant through August of 2011.
In late summer of 2008 the Northwest District Board of Directors
called Robert Fowls, Principal at Trinity Lutheran School Bend,
to be Associate Director of Education Services. Bob had been a
contributor to the proposal and was poised to take it a step further
by joining the Sustainable Lutheran Schools Initiative on a full time
basis. His participation has taken this work to the next level.
Bob and I began work on the process and developed a presentation
that we shared throughout the district to administrators, pastors,
and board chairs. All three had to be present. We had hoped to start
with 8 schools, but 21 schools signed the covenant and the process
was underway. As of this writing 26 schools are participating and an
additional 2 schools are inactive while they gather a leader.
The Sustainable Lutheran Schools Initiative activity began with the
2009-10 school year and continues today. From the response received we expect this process to grow and
improve. It is the method we use to support our schools through its leaders.
We desire to “Encourage Good Schools to become Great Schools!” The method includes:
1. Identifying the issues and needs of the school, providing webinars, conferences, consultations,
and school visits to meet the needs of each school leader.
2. Encouragement of significant staff development for teachers.
3. Require each school to begin or maintain National Lutheran Accreditation.
(continued on page 13)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I
have loved you, so you must love one another. 35All men
will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.”
— John 13: 34-35
MeaSuring our MiniStry
How do we know we’re being effective in the ministry God has given to us? This is a question
that I believe will become more and more important to us in the weeks and years ahead.
The reason for this is the increasing number of churches throughout our Synod that are faced with
a shortage of resources and diminishing numbers. They’re not sure they’re going to survive, and
when that becomes a part of the issue, we tend to take account of what we’re doing.
As a nation we’ve been through some rough times with people out of work, mortgages being foreclosed upon, and
congregations having a harder time caring for the needs of their workers and funding their ministries. Researchers tell us that
we can expect more of the same, and some predict the demise of mainline denominations.
That gets us back to the original question – how do we know we’re being effective in the ministry God has given to us? While
some would rightly remind us that it’s the Holy Spirit’s work to bring people to faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, it’s also true that
we can be better or worse stewards of the gifts God has given us. So it’s important for us to ask and to answer this question.
The night before He died, Jesus gave His beloved the command to love one another as He had loved them (John 13:34-35) –
and He was about to show them the depth of that love. Later, as He was about to ascend into heaven, He also told them, “You
will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8) These seem to be two
pretty good rulers by which we might measure our effectiveness in ministry.
To get a handle on what love really looks like we can see it in action in our Lord’s strong, patient, forbearing, sacrificial love for
His people. We see it in His patient mentoring of Peter and all the apostles. We can also look to the Apostle Paul’s description
of love in 1 Corinthians 13. How well do these words fit your ministry: patient, kind, not insisting on one’s own way, not easily
angered, always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres…?
We must also ask “how are we doing when it comes to pointing to Jesus in our relationships – to the point that when the people
in our lives are having a hard time, they come to us to gain a picture of our hope in God’s love and blessing?” This, too, seems
like a reasonable way we can assess how we’re doing in the stewardship of the ministry God has placed into our hands.
I don’t know if these words speak a message of exhortation or encouragement to you. Much of that depends on what you’re
bringing to them. I do know that the only real source of strength and growth we have in our ministries is in God’s presence
among us and His blessing. While we can’t manufacture either for people around us to see, we can reflect it to them… or not.
We are heading for a time of significant change for the family of God in the world. We aren’t in the majority. We’ve got many
more people who think they know what it’s like to be a Christian, and they don’t like what they see. God is calling us to
change their minds – not through argumentation or carefully reasoned points of view, but through faith active in love in the
relationships with other people which God has given to us.
Take the spiritual temperature of your family, your friendships, your congregation… Do your relationships reflect the love
Jesus has first given to you? Are they characterized by Paul’s description of what love really looks like? Do they point to God’s
message of hope to a dying world?
Lord Jesus, Help us to see the world and one another the way You do. Place Your love into our hearts. Give us the desire to
draw close to those around us so that our lives might fully reflect the gift You won for us on the cross. Fill our hearts with joy
and with hope as we look ahead and anticipate the ways in which You will visit Your blessing upon us. Thank You for Your deep
love for us. Send Your Holy Spirit that others might see it, too. Amen.
God’s richest blessings as we celebrate the gift of life this Easter season.
Messages will be forwarded to the appropriate
Board officer to make a response.
We look forward to hearing from you.
highlight of the Board’s November meeting was a visit from
A Eric Geiger, the author of Simple Church. Local clergy
and guests from the Portland area were invited to the Friday
evening discussion with the author and members of the Board.
During both the November and January meetings, the Board
discussed the results of the congregation visitations the Board
has conducted during its annual August retreat in various parts
of the District since 2004.
Board member Bob Kaestner presented some insights gained
from reviewing responses to questions that visiting Board
members have discussed with congregation members. The
questions: What are you doing that you have found successful
in reaching lost souls in your area? How can the Northwest
District partner with you in fulfilling your mission? What
1-888-693-5267
challenges do you see in the next year, two years, etc.? What
areas or specific items would you like the District office to
include in their prayers? The responses showed concern for
reaching the lost and attracting new members, particularly
young people; sharing and using District resources; and
sharing the challenges of congregational life and outreach
among all members of the congregation.
President Paul Linneman focused on Synod’s new ministry
model, “Witness, Mercy, and Life Together.” He emphasized
that congregations are to be places where people are
introduced to the love of God in Jesus Christ and are
supported in becoming His disciples. We need to invest
in people rather than programs, empower them toward
discipleship, and reach out into our communities for
their salvation and well being. In light of 1 Peter 3:15 our
evangelism should be carried out with “gentleness and
respect.”
Among financial matters, the Board approved the budget for
2011 as presented by the District Business Manager, housing
allowances for District Staff, and an auditor to do both formal
and informal reviews of District finances. The District Staff was
commended for their diligent service.
Looking toward future scheduling, Board members have been
invited to attend the Northwest District Ethnic Ministries
Symposium, to be held at Concordia University May 20-
21, 2011. The Fall Board meeting will be held in October
in Seaside, OR prior to the Northwest District All Workers’
Conference.
The members of the Board of Directors encourage members
Revitalization
Four significant revitalization efforts are currently being applied in varying degrees throughout the
Northwest District. The purpose that links them all together is being and making disciples.
They are described briefly below.
Tracking the Spirit (TTS)
TTS is a revitalizing movement which
elevates people’s awareness and
understanding of the role of the Holy Spirit
here and now in creating disciples. While
participants prepare for and participate in the
Tracking sessions, the Holy Spirit guides them into a
greater understanding of their spiritual gifts, the gifts
of their team, how to work together as a team for the
kingdom and how to be servant-leaders in action in
their communities.
Body Life Team (BLT)
A comment recently shared by a participant –
I intend to step out and answer the calling of the
Holy Spirit in challenges that He has placed before
me that I have cowered from before. I will open
myself to share the many miracles in my life with
other women who may be going through rough
times. Helping them to see God’s miracles in ugly
situations will be such a blessing to them.
Congregations can schedule sessions directly
through Patti Maggiora in Expanding Ministries at
pattim@nowlcms.org.
BLT is a learning community comprised of pastors and lay leaders whose congregations have experienced TTS
and who requested that a forum be created for a more focused conversation about discipleship. The monthly
teleconference serves to encourage, support, and revitalize one another. Each session is led by a different
team member.
Natural Church
Development (NCD)
NCD is a resource that provides congregational
leaders a survey mechanism for their ministry leaders
to give feedback about the health of their church.
Through extensive international research, eight quality
characteristics have been determined to be indicators
of a healthy church. They are measured by survey
questions which reveal the church’s current “minimum
factor.” This factor becomes the basis for development
of an action plan for improvement.
Transforming Churches Network (TCN)
The eight factors measured include: Empowering
Leadership, Gift-Based Ministry, Passionate
Spirituality, Effective Structures, Inspiring Worship
Service, Holistic Small Groups, Need-Oriented
Evangelism, and Loving Relationships.
The Expanding Ministries Department is an
authorized agent for administering these surveys.
If a congregation chooses to process their survey
through Expanding Ministries rather than directly
with Church Smart, they save $25 on the processing
cost. Nine pastor coaches in the Northwest District
are trained in the NCD coaching. Their names
and contact information are listed on the district
website at this link
This revitalization effort is an RSO of the LCMS which has great potential in helping congregations
revitalize their ministries. Possibly the best value of TCN is that it moves congregations away from
a bureaucratic model of ministry to an accountable leader model of ministry. It also has some great resources to
help congregations make a transition to a revitalized ministry. It is completely up to the congregations as to how
far they proceed with it. The goal is for a congregation to be outward focused meeting needs in the community,
building relations with people along the way.
Spring is the time for preparation for ministry
teams who will arrive this summer. Time is
spent traveling to communities in Alaska
to assure that there will be places for the
visitors to sleep, conduct VBS programs,
Bible studies and sports activities. There is
a great deal of excitement as we talk with
village members about the events planned
for this summer. Children happily anticipate
the Bible stories, games and crafts. All of
these activities provide an opportunity
to talk about Jesus. Even the adults are
looking forward to gathering for evening
provide quilting projects for the women
in the community. These projects offer an
opportunity to gather informally to talk about
The “VBS Express” On the Road With Jesus
Season Five
by Rev. Bruce Meier
The “VBS Express” is gearing up for season five. Requests are coming in
and the schedule is quickly filling. Truck No. 1 (the long distance truck) is
fully booked for June and July and working on the month of August. Truck
No. 2 (Western Oregon and Southwest Washington) still has a number of
dates left in all three months and awaits your requests. With twin 22’ rock
walls, bounce house and full stage and sound system, the “VBS Express”
makes your Vacation Bible School program or other church event a huge
success. Check us out on the web: www.theparishvoice.org and click on
the “VBS Express” page.
The “VBS Express” is also a great outlet for service mission opportunities
for youth groups and individuals. Join with us in proclaiming the “Gospel
Message of Salvation in Christ Jesus” throughout the great Northwest.
Below are some of the service opportunities:
• Youth Groups to help with a Vacation Bible School Program at one
of the many locations the “VBS Express” serves.
• An individual or Husband and Wife team to operate truck No. 2.
This requires a Class A CDL, high level enthusiasm and a love for
sharing the Gospel with children.
• A Grant Writing Individual who would be interested in promoting
and acquiring funding for the “VBS Express” ministry.
The “VBS Express” is also planning for the future and the opportunity
to expand into a nationwide ministry. While it is still in the vision stage,
the Holy Spirit is working overtime to strengthen and build that vision.
The program would be designed to promote the “VBS Express” ministry
throughout the Districts in the LCMS and encourage other churches to
franchise such a ministry. The national truck would be a show program
designed to operate at conventions and special events.
We give thanks to the Holy Spirit who has so richly blessed this ministry
and all of you who have so graciously supported us in the past and
continue to support us as we vision the future. God’s blessings to all of
you and what more can I say than “The Church Has Left The Building –
We’ve Gone Outreaching!”
The module that draws the three pieces together is the one-onone
coaching and mentoring that takes place every other week
and focuses on the following:
1. The spiritual well-being of the leader as well as his or
her total well-being.
2. A personality profile informs the leader how they are
“wired.” The discussion leads the leader to recognize
how they are being received by others and how they can
best relate to those with whom they come in contact.
3. An important segment of the coaching/mentoring
session is the discovery of the issues facing the leader.
Leaders are held accountable for tasks and actions
they determine to take. A variety of resources and
connections are available to the leader.
The process is fluid and positive changes are made to improve
the delivery and results.
In January we began a pilot project for 5 congregations with
early childhood centers. Under the leadership of Martha
Weniger, Karen Wrye and Robin Fossum, a modified process
has been developed using the Sustainable Lutheran Schools
model. Early Childhood Directors, pastors and board members
are supported through webinars and site visits. Directors will
Participation in the SLSI project has been a certain
benefit for my school, and for me in particular. While
the school’s Board of Directors has definitely valued and
appreciated the content of Webinars targeted for them, I
believe the school’s greatest benefit is what it is providing
for me, the administrator. This isn’t my first rodeo - I spent
eight years as principal elsewhere before arriving at Anchor
Lutheran this past summer, but as much as I’ve learned
through my experiences, perhaps just as much has been
muddied or forgotten over time. I find the topics and
be involved in one-on-one coaching and mentoring throughout
the 2 ½ year pilot. The board webinars will be focused on
board governance for an early childhood center. Pastors
will be included in the Sustainable Lutheran Schools Pastor
Webinars focused on the pastor’s relationship to the school. In
addition to the coaching and webinars, the directors will meet
as a cohort group monthly through the use of technology. We
have great hopes that this process will be significant as they
reach and touch children and families.
Why such efforts? Dr. Oswald Hoffman, sainted Lutheran Hour
speaker, once shared the reason while presenting at my first
teachers conference: “Because Jesus Christ Is!” That’s our
reason and our Lutheran Schools are the place.
discussions very refreshing, with many a moment when
I am glad to have thoughts and knowledge brought back
to the forefront of my awareness, ready for application in
my current setting. Of the greatest help to me by far has
been the one-on-one coaching sessions with Dick Weniger.
During these times we are able to talk about how things
are going, what irons I have in the fire, what I’m excited
about and what challenges I’m facing. Dick has been a
great support and an excellent resource, and I have had no
moral dilemma in stealing every great idea Dick has passed
along. Thankfully, Dick is good with that! The sharing, the
encouragement, and the prayer support — all those things
gained through the coaching are greatly appreciated, and
are having a significantly positive impact on the operation
and growth of our school ministry.
The Sustainable Lutheran Schools Initiative has been a
positive experience for Bethlehem Lutheran School in
three significant areas. Bob Fowls and Dick Weniger have
provided solid professional development for administrators
in a concise and accessible format. They have drawn on
relevant sources such as Stephen Covey and John Maxwell
in leading our Lutheran schools to understand the changing
culture of education in our country and the role of the leader
in a Lutheran school. My leadership has been strengthened
We are a small start up school in our second year and
are participating in the Sustainable Lutheran Schools
Initiative. Recently I was asked if from my perspective as a
board chair I felt that SLSI has been a positive experience
for me and my school.
My initial reaction to the question (in my mind) was to
answer sarcastically, “Are you kidding?” The question was
asked honestly and sincerely, but for me, it was like being
asked if from my perspective as a human being, did I feel
that breathing was a positive experience for me.
There are aspects of SLSI that are dedicated to board
governance, but a major emphasis of the initiative is the
development and coaching of school administrators.
One thing the reader needs to know is that being small,
we at First Lutheran Classical School do not have an
administrator, so as board chair that responsibility falls
to me. Consequently my perspective as a board chair is
The Sustainable Lutheran Schools Initiative (SLSI) was
to Lutheran school principals. I have made connections with
other principals and developed relationships that would have
taken years to cultivate without the Initiative. I have also had
the opportunity to speak regularly with my coach, Bob Fowls,
about my daily challenges and long-term goals. Bob has been
a resource for connecting me to professionals who can help
my school become more sustainable.
Finally, the Sustainable Lutheran Schools Initiative
has provided the support and resources necessary for
Bethlehem to be successful in the accreditation process.
We are currently in the middle of our self-study and it is
going very smoothly thanks to input from colleagues at
other Lutheran schools and Bob Fowls who is also our
consultant. We look forward to our accreditation visit in the
fall of 2011 and to a future of sustainability!
not only one of assuring the proper relationship between
governance and administration and following the growth
of the administrator from the coaching, but of actually
experiencing both since I am being coached as an
administrator as well.
And what an experience it has been! Now let me first say
that when it comes to school administration or governance,
I am greener than bluegrass in a Kentucky June. I am not
an educator nor have I had any previous experience with
a school board, and neither has the rest of the board.
But I am a product of a K-12 Lutheran education and am
passionate that school ministry is not only an arrow in the
quiver of our weapons against the forces of darkness, it is
an A bomb.
So on being a board chair and acting administrator, no I
haven’t spent the night at a Holiday Inn Express, but I have
spent many pleasant evenings on the phone with Bob Fowls
and many challenging afternoons and evenings in the
excellent webinars put on by Dick Weniger and Bob Fowls.
The point of all this is that if they can take the likes of us
and make a growing school, think of what they can do for
you and your ministry.
the program. As we all know, there are several programs out
there that promise the world and then deliver nothing. Much
to my satisfaction, The Sustainable Lutheran Schools Program
has provided resources, offered support and helped me to
grow as an administrator.
(Continued on page 14)

(Continued from page 14)
The administrative position at Lutheran schools can be
extremely challenging considering you do not have the
support that public school administrators share. In Idaho,
Lutheran Schools are few and far apart. You find yourself
feeling stranded on a remote island with no one to provide
mentoring or guidance. The SLS program has provided
me not only the opportunity to see how other Lutheran
schools operate, but to develop relationships with other
administrators, and receive “one on one” coaching, from
Dick Weniger, which has been immensely helpful. I feel I have
grown spiritually as well as academically.
The challenge that Lutheran school administrators face
in trying to provide a school which meets the needs of
our families, state regulations, and exceptional education
is difficult. At times one can feel overwhelmed by these
demands placed on us. The webinars have been a great
resource where one can choose to participate in the various
topics offered. Last year, during a difficult time, one of the
webinars was on Critical Communications and Conflict. The
timing was perfect; I needed to make some tough decisions
YOUTH & EDUCATION
and that particular webinar provided me with the guidance I
needed at the time.
The “one on one” coaching has been the most helpful to me.
Although the coach does not tell you how to operate your
school, Mr. Weniger and Mr. Fowls listen, give suggestions,
and provide examples, thus allowing you to draw your own
conclusion. The time spent checking in with one another
and knowing someone is out there to help is a great source
of comfort. The accountability issue is profitable as well.
There were times when I found myself drifting from issues I
knew I needed to focus on and my coach would remind me
to stay the course.
The task of administrating a quality Lutheran School
requires great effort and ability. The SLS program equips
us with the ability to achieve these goals. I’m thankful
to participate in the program and am pleased with the
edification I have received thus far.
I would recommend everyone who works with Lutheran
schools to take advantage of the SLS program.
PortLanD LutHeran ScHooL’S “neW cLuB”
There’s a new club at Portland Lutheran School, the Green Blue Jays, and its mission is to save the planet. Taking a cue
from the school mascot but with an environmental twist, sixteen students in grades 5 - 8 comprise this new “green team,”
spending two sessions each week during their Explorations class time to help PLS become a certified Green School.
The Green Blue Jays collect mixed-use recyclables on Thursdays from all rooms and offices throughout the school. They also
recently conducted a waste audit from the elementary cafeteria and high school commons to see what kinds of waste reduction
opportunities there are. From the audit, it was decided that the first waste reduction measure would be to recycle milk cartons
from the elementary school cafeteria waste. It accounted for 33% of the volume in the garbage cans. The Green Blue Jays will be
educating the elementary students on how to prepare the cartons for recycling.
Students in the club have also learned how to recycle plastic water bottles, how
to avoid “contaminating” a recycling bin, and how to recycle glass (and why it’s
important for it to stay separate from paper). One student commented, “I have
learned about what can and can’t go into a recycling bin. I also learned about how
putting certain things in the bin can affect the whole process of the machinery.”
Initially, the Green Blue Jays was started so that PLS could be certified as a Green
School, a recognition that the school has hoped for, but not necessarily actively
pursued until now. Portland Lutheran already has many recycling and sustainability
practices in place, but there is room for improvement. Engaging students in this
process of certification helps to lay a foundation for the understanding of stewardship
of God’s creation. A small number of students take an active role in educating the entire school about sustainability. It is hoped
that recycling opportunities practiced at PLS will transfer over to the homes of our school community as well.
When asked what students like best about being a “Green Blue Jay,” one of the top responses was how much they liked helping
out the school and working together for a common cause. One student was even more specific: “I like helping the environment.
I know that there are a lot of environmental issues out there and not a lot of people are willing to help. Even if there are, most of
us aren’t doing anything, so I like to do my part for the earth.”
Portland Lutheran School (740 SE 182nd) is an independent pre-kindergarten through 12th grade Lutheran school that
draws students from throughout the Portland metro area. PLS prepares students for lifelong learning and service through an
integrated program of academics, arts, athletics, social activities and spiritual education.
Making a Difference froM afar
Our church has paid for the education of a young man in India who has completed his
Masters of Divinity with a thesis on Luther’s “Theology of the Cross,” and in March
will complete his Masters of Theology with his thesis on Luther’s “Bondage of the Will.” His
westernized name is Luigi.
Since his family was only able to help a very little with education, our church has paid most
of his expenses. I served as a mentor and edited his thesis which his professor in India is
impressed with. Upon graduation he plans to continue his involvement with youth ministry in
N.E. India. As far as I know there is no Lutheran presence in Manipur and Nagaland, states in
N.E. India in which he will work. The Baptists did a great mission work in N.E. India in the late
1800’s when many people were converted.
Luigi was impressed with my teaching and Lutheran theology when I taught him in Bible
College in Udaipur. That motivated him to study Luther. When I suggested “Bondage of the Will,” and he did some initial reading,
he was convinced he would prove Luther wrong since he was schooled in Baptist “Decision" theology. As he has researched the
topic, he has been convinced that Luther has the best explanation for the part man’s will plays in his salvation--none.
The application of his thesis is “evangelism among the Tungkal Naga people of Manipur and Nagaland.” Luigi has met with
church leaders there sharing Luther’s theology with them as a missionary of Redeemer in Dayton, WA. His goal is to publish his
thesis in book form making Luther’s ideas more readily understandable to people there. This is kind of a back-door approach
to the spread of Lutheran theology in an area without any Lutheran presence. It is also an example of using native missionaries
to witness to their own people, which has been demonstrated to be more effective than sending white seminary trained
missionaries from the west.
I’ve had the luxury of long conversations with Luigi over the past 5 years during his post-graduate studies and during his youth
ministry in Manipur. It’s been great fun to watch him develop as a man and as a theologian. We have exciting conversations
about the state of the compromised western church and how that influence is creeping into more westernized states in India
such as Manipur. I’m thrilled to see how he embraces Luther’s theology. He has proven himself as a very competent evangelist
in conducting youth camps (almost always over half of the young people receive Christ as their Savior in the course of his
camps). He has a vision for developing a Bible college in Manipur for training young people.
My main purpose in sharing this information is to inform people of opportunities the Lord designs for mission cooperation
between the East and West. Maybe the time has come to be open to new paradigms of what mission work really is. I’m
convinced that our relationship with Luigi was designed by the Lord, and am eager to see where this leads. What it has done for
our congregation is to more than triple our mission giving. At our last year’s annual meeting, Luigi stayed up late so he could
personally speak via phone to our congregation. More importantly, we’ve grown in prayer support for those we’ve developed
connections with. In my opinion, developing supportive relationships with native missionaries is a great strategy for our
church’s mission efforts.
Other team members included Jenn Bomberger (Goldendale, WA), Betsy Crist (Haines, OR), Ben Wiseman, Levi Wiseman,
will help us be good stewards of what the ministry has.
After construction in the morning, the group from Faith led an afternoon event that included proclamation of Jesus’ love
with the “Bee Bold for Jesus” VBS curriculum. Children from the orphanage were joined by seventy to ninety neighborhood
children for skits, Bible stories with a flannel-graph, singing, and a meal during what Rev. and Cliney Paul call “Kids’
Club.” The mission team also presented five evenings of catechism instruction on Baptism. People at the orphanage
are accustomed to spending a couple of hours a day in
the Scriptures and worship. We were impressed with their
memorization of Scripture and spiritual songs. Jenn Bomberger
(mother of two) commented, “Wow, this helps me to think
about what I am doing with my own children in raising them
according to God’s Word.” We were honored to have this
opportunity to share God’s Word and to be enriched by these
dear Christians’ steadfastness in their spiritual lives.
Being with them for New Years Eve was an interesting
experience; Haitians celebrate both the New Year and Haiti’s
Independence Day on January 1st. Nightly services led up to
New Year’s Eve. Then on New Year’s Eve the largest gathering
assembled in their best clothes. Following a worship service
lasting a couple hours, everyone in attendance was given a
large plate of food. It was very encouraging to see the church so active in their neighborhood. This was also a very enriching
way to celebrate the New Year in praise of our God.
Faith Lutheran has recently scheduled the odd-numbered years as years to do a foreign mission and the even years to do
a mission within the western United States. This has allowed the whole church to be more personally involved with Jesus
Christ’s mission in our own “backyard” and throughout the world. We have a sponsorship program to support an orphan, a
student, or a teacher at this site in Haiti. The sponsorship program is administered through Faith Lutheran in partnership
with Lamb of God Lutheran Church in Lake Stevens, WA. Please contact Rev. Wiseman (541-963-2831), or any of Faith’s
members, for more information. You may also learn more by going to the website www.nehlm.org.
HELPING YOU REACH A RIPE MISSION FIELD
Good Shepherd Auxiliary is working to help you be able to reach and teach those
with intellectual and developmental disabilities (DD) in your congregations and
community with the Good News of Jesus.
As the official auxiliary of Bethesda Lutheran Communities (BLC), since its merger with
Good Shepherd Communities in September 2009, members of the Auxiliary have been
supporting the spiritual life programs and projects for BLC’s 2,000+ clients living in
group homes, apartments, and involved in day programs in 13 different states. In the
Northwest Region, 274 people receive care from BLC, 239 in OR and 35 in WA.
Good Shepherd Auxiliary (GSAux.) is currently funding BLC’s development of a 3-year
Bible study curriculum, “Crossroad Journey.” It is designed specifically for congregations and community-based
organizations for outreach to those with developmentally disabled in their congregation and community. It has been
developed in 6-week units. Contained within are student and teacher materials, new appropriate illustrations, and music
to delight the students and to reinforce the lessons. The first units will be available in the Spring of 2011 from www.
Bethesdalutherancommmunites.org.
Statistics show that over 60% of families having a member with DD are not involved in a church. In your church’s
neighborhood these families are waiting to be welcomed into a loving church family so they can learn of Jesus’ love,
forgiveness, and promise of eternal life. Your congregation will be blessed by the joyful, enthusiastic presence of those
with DD whose faith in Jesus will amaze you. In I Corinthians 12:14-26, God’s Word tells us that we are all parts of the
Body of Christ, with different gifts and abilities, each part having a special purpose, and each part necessary, all needing
one another.
We need those with DD in our congregations to teach us how to love one another unconditionally and accept one another.
We are all God’s beloved children, not because of what we can or can’t do, how we look, or how we express our praises to
the Lord. We all love to learn of Jesus, worship Him, and sing His praises. Here is a mission field ripe for harvest.
Top 10 Predictions for 2011
From Concordia Oak Harbor February Newsletter
submitted by Nancy Wyckoff
With all the problems the world is facing, it can be unsettling to the mind. So here are
ten predictions you can count on!
1. The Bible will still have all the answers.
2. Prayer will still be the most powerful thing on Earth.
3. The Holy Spirit will still move.
4. God will still honor the praises of His people.
5. There will still be God-anointed preaching.
6. There will still be singing of praise to God.
7. God will still pour out blessings upon His people.
8. There will still be room at the Cross.
9. Jesus will still love you.
10. Jesus will still be the Savior with grace for all.
Isn’t it great to be reminded who is really in control, and that
“the Word of the Lord endures forever”? (1 Peter 1:25)
