WELCOME NOTE FAMOUS BECOMES CINEPLEX MAGAZINE TOP: Famous is relaunched as Cineplex Magazine BOTTOM: The fi rst issue of Famous hit theatres in November 1999 6 | CINEPLEX MAGAZINE | OCTOBER 2010 You’ll notice some big changes with this issue of Famous magazine. e rst, of course, is that it’s no longer called Famous. Welcome to the rst issue of Cineplex Magazine. After 11 years of bringing you the best in movie news, exclusive interviews and compelling photographs under the Famous banner, we felt it was time to change our name to re ect the environment that has been our home for the past several years. We launched Famous in 1999 for Famous Players theatres, but after the 2005 sale of Famous Players to Cineplex Entertainment, the name felt out of sync. Cineplex is a great name for a movie magazine, we felt. Aside from being Canada’s largest cinema chain, the word has become synonymous with the term “movie theatre” around the globe. While we were changing the name, we thought we’d redesign the magazine to make it lighter and brighter (thanks to art director Trevor Stewart for that), and then stu it full of all the fascinating stories coming from the movie world’s sets, festivals and events. Take a look at “All Dressed Up,” our new red carpet coverage, on page 18. Beautiful people in fabulous dresses and suits. It works every time. Or ip to page 46 for “Casting Call,” a section devoted to who’s just signed onto what movie, and which production is nally getting o the ground. Although we may look di erent, and have a new name, the sta and writers remain the same, which means we’re drawing on more than a decade of experience covering movies. From chatting with up-and-coming, homegrown actors so fresh they don’t yet know how to speak in clichés, to interviewing the biggest A-list stars at the Toronto International Film Festival or locations around the world, we’ve done it — again and again and again. In addition to being available at Cineplex theatres across Canada, you can still nd us online at Cineplex.com. Plus, something new. Starting with this issue we’re being distributed in e Globe and Mail newspaper. And we’ve increased our circulation from 650,000 to 700,000 copies per issue, making us one of the biggest magazines — of any type — published in Canada. Now, onto the good stu . Your rst issue of Cineplex Magazine features a talk with Jesse Eisenberg about the Facebook movie e Social Network (page 28); Ben Affl eck on the increasing relevance of e Company Men (page 24); Olivia Newton-John talking icing, penalties and blue lines in support of Score: A Hockey Musical (page 36); Christopher Plummer on bringing the Stratford Shakespeare Festival’s acclaimed production of e T e m p e s to t Cineplex screens (page 32); and a pro le of Matt Damon (page 38), star of this month’s supernatural drama Hereafter. We hope you enjoy. ■ SALAH BACHIR, PUBLISHER ■ MARNI WEISZ, EDITOR PUBLISHER SALAH BACHIR EDITOR MARNI WEISZ DEPUTY EDITOR INGRID RANDOJA ART DIRECTOR TREVOR STEWART ASSISTANT ART DIRECTOR ALIZA KLEIN DIRECTOR, PRODUCTION SHEILA GREGORY CONTRIBUTORS BOB STRAUSS, KEVIN WILLIAMSON ADVERTISING SALES FOR CINEPLEX MAGAZINE AND LE MAGAZINE CINEPLEX IS HANDLED BY CINEPLEX MEDIA. And, it starts with a pink BlackBerry ® and ends with women having access to the latest breast cancer detection technology. For every pink BlackBerry ® Curve TM 9300, Pearl TM 3G or Curve TM 8530 sold, TELUS will support a local hospital by donating $25 towards innovative breast cancer equipment. That new equipment will then have a positive effect on the hospital’s patients because it’s 28% more accurate than film, it delivers approximately 22% less radiation, and it allows radiologists to immediately email images of the test results.
