TRENDS
THE
Get to know these seven hot
runway looks, you’ll be seeing
a lot of them this summer
I BY JEAN-FRANÇOIS LÉGARÉ
White Lace
Whether macramé, crochet,
or out-and-out lace, frilly, white
see-through pieces are the ultimate
look this summer. At Fendi,
Karl Lagerfeld used a laser to cut
doilies right into his cotton dresses.
Chloé and Emilio Pucci drew on
little girls’ confirmation dresses for
inspiration, and Diane Von Furstenberg
(seen here) matched eyelet shorts
with an eyelet top for a sweet,
oh-so young look.
Th This season, everyone’s
cr crazy about the kimono.
Pa Paco Rabanne designer
Pa Patrick Robinson must
ha have been thinking about
MMemoirs
of a Geisha when he
transformed tra vintage kimonos
into in beautiful, modern
dresses dr that are both chic
and an sleek. And Diesel’s
Renzo Re Rosso (seen here)
Sex Sells
A lot of designers seemed
to be inspired by the “porno
chic” style Tom Ford developed
at Yves Saint-Laurent, and also
by Gianni Versace, with many
pieces sporting asymmetrical
looks. Alexander McQueen
(shown here) did a sensual
dress that looks more like a
robe — very sexy, and very
simple. Marc Jacobs, on the
other hand, offered a bright
pink cocktail dress for Louis
Vuitton that was completely
unstructured and open at just
the right places.
Popular Prints
Whether inspired by Bauhaus
architecture or African themes,
prints are bigger than ever, both
in popularity and proportion.
Christian Lacroix and Alberta
Ferretti explored tribal prints,
while Phi and Alexandre
Herchcovitch went with
psychedelic designs plucked
from the 1960s. Green —
especially in the form of leaves
and flowers — are also huge.
In Milan, Gucci, Valentino and
Versace (seen here) were
positively in bloom.
Dress Shirt
Forget the power suit, this
summer a men’s shirt is all
you need to feel like a
powerful woman. At Hermes,
Jean Paul Gaultier made an
asymmetrical shirt out of
poplin, while Vivienne
Westwood matched her
model’s top with a belt in the
same shade to define the
waist. Stella McCartney (seen
here) simply took an oversized
men’s tuxedo dress shirt and
put it on a woman, worn at the
knee for a chic effect.
