“One of my favourite movies
is Rudy. Rudy is able to
achieve his goal of making it
on to the Notre Dame
Fighting Irish football team
in spite of some pretty hefty
odds. Rudy didn’t let his
small size get in the way of
his dream. It was all about
commitment and hard
work. I’m 6’2” and 185
pounds — which in the real
world is considered pretty
big, but in the international
arena of competitive rowing, I was considered by many to be too small for
heavyweight rowing. But look at me now...I’m going to Athens!”

“Any Given Sunday. We race on Sundays
and our finals are always on Sundays.
But it’s not just that. It’s the concept
that you have an opportunity
to win or lose.
It’s just that cut and
dried. One week you
could win, one week
you could lose. I always
try to be on top. I try to
push the envelope, find
that extra inch, dig
deep and want it more
than all the others.
That movie just gets me
going because this is
my Super Bowl so I
better go for it.”

“G.I. Jane is inspirational to me
because it’s about a woman who
overcomes adversity in order to
achieve excellence. Her battle for
excellence involves hard work,
commitment and strength — both
mental and physical. Striving for
excellence as a female rower is very
competitive. There are so many
talented and capable women vying
for a select few spots on the national
team. And it takes years of hard
work and perseverance to make it to
the Olympic level.” [Ed.’s note: Okay,
we realize G.I. Jane isn’t exactly a sports
movie, but it does involve extreme acts of
athleticism, so we’ll let it stand.]
