EVERBODY LOVES
GEORGE ©
Man that George Clooney is a likable
guy, eh? With the exception of
those who disagree with his
liberal politics, I believe most folks find
him genuinely pleasant and worthwhile
as a human being.
He strikes me as the kind of guy who
admits his mistakes — in fact, in our
interview with Clooney, “The Con is On,”
page 34, he confesses that Ocean’s Twelve
wasn’t as good as it should have been,
and that improving on that film was his
motivation to make this month’s very
slick-looking Ocean’s Thirteen.
But my favourite Clooney anecdote is about the way he handled an
upsetting situation last year. Gawker.com, one of the few smart and
funny gossip blogs out there, started a controversial offshoot, the
Gawker Stalker — readers would write in details about celebrity
sightings and Gawker would, almost instantly, pinpoint the sightings
on a map. Celebs were appalled, it was a safety issue they said. Gawker
defended itself, maintaining that it was all in fun and anyone who
intended to hurt a star would do it with or without their service.
Yet, whichever way you felt about it, you had to like the way Clooney
handled the situation. Instead of whining to the press, or moping
around giving sour faces to the paparazzi, Clooney came up with a very
amusing way to combat the intrusion. He encouraged publicists to
flood the site with bogus tips about their clients’ whereabouts, so it
would be impossible to identify a real sighting.
A couple of my favourite phony Clooney reports were “Just saw
George Clooney at the Peninsula. He had a mustard stain on his
jacket, was kissing a Mexican woman and eating a watermelon” and
“George Clooney’s with me helping to reset all of my clocks to daylight
savings time!” Point is, Clooney is a man of action, and that action is
usually pretty clever.
Another actor who has developed a reputation for taking action is
Angelina Jolie. On page 26 you’ll find “Doing Her Justice,” our
interview with Jolie about playing Mariane Pearl, wife of murdered
journalist Daniel Pearl, in A Mighty Heart.
Ioan Gruffudd hasn’t had to worry about fan stalkers much yet. The
Welsh actor is just now starting to be recognized in North America.
The part that did it was Mr. Fantastic in
2005’s Fantastic Four. In “Stretching for a Role,”
page 32, Gruffudd talks about the sequel —
Rise of the Silver Surfer — and describes how his
life has changed in the past two years.
And on page 30, we have “Flood of Success,”
an interview with the very hot Steve Carell about
taking over for Jim Carrey in the big-budget
comedy Evan Almighty.
