Junk Kouture is delighted to launch the Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Competition 2013
in association with the European Recycling Platform (ERP), a national platform which gives
young, expressive designers the opportunity to work with various junk materials with a view
to creating a striking dress design and an impressive work of art. ERP, Ireland’s only pan-
European compliance scheme for electrical and electronic waste and waste battery recycling
is delighted to continue their involvement with the competition and educate students on
the importance of sustainability, while giving them an outlet for their creativity.
This year, forget Paris and Milan as the fashion capitals of the world, as trend setting
designers in schools across the country put Ireland on the style map and take the fashion
world by storm, while promoting sustainability at the same time! Junk Kouture Recycled
Fashion Competition 2013 is open to all second level students who think they’ve got what
it takes to create something stylish and outrageous with junk and already used materials.
Think recycled milk cartons, old phone chargers and plastic bin liners – and the next
generation of designers might just find they’ve got the makings of a high couture ensemble
already at their fingertips. Remember, each creation must incorporate an item of electrical
waste with a special prize awarded for its most inspired and creative use.

Junk Kouture
Create wearable art and outrageous couture outfits for men or women in Junk Kouture style.
Rework trash and other already used materials that are beyond their intended purpose and
craft them into remarkable high-end couture fashion.
Considerations in designing your piece
• Pieces must be durable for wear in rehearsal and in the fashion show
• Each design must include at least one item of electrical waste ie, a wire,
battery plug etc
• Please make sure that materials used are safe to yourself, your model and the public
so as to avoid hazardous materials being exposed to yourself and those around you
• The use of alcohol, cigarette or drug branding is prohibited unless used to create
awareness of the harms these substances cause
• Entrants are not allowed to seek external sponsorship to help promote their design
• Please keep in mind this event will be family friendly when considering your design
and music
• The piece must be designed so that the model can walk up stairs that are approximately
3 feet wide

FAQs
Who can enter?
The Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Competition 2013 is open to all students at second level
that meet the eligibility criteria as stated in the official rules.
What materials can I use?
Applicants are invited to create wearable couture fashion (for men and women) using
trash.
What is considered trash?
Good question, and partly we leave that up to you, but here are some guidelines:
Yes
• Items that obviously were headed for the bin or recycling streams that you have
saved for re-use (directly saving from the bin, holding on to old gift wrapping for a
second life, saving plastic bags etc.)
• Items of Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) that is safe to incorporate
in an outfit ie anything with a plug or battery
• Litter, items intentionally discarded and found in a dumpster, side of the road, etc.
are obvious trash
• Items that you find at a recycling centre or recycled materials shop, (thrift shops,
electronic recycling shops etc.)
• Manufacturer or business generated scraps that would otherwise head for the bin
No (Points will be deducted for all listed below)
• Items that are purchased new and then re-purposed
• Items around your house that are still good for their original intent
• N ew fabric purchased to create the underneath or base of the piece then covered in
recycled materials (used clothing used as a base is allowed)
What are the criteria for submission and judging consideration?
Pieces must be made out of 100% recycled materials. Glue, thread, staples, tape and other
methods of construction etc. are permitted and will not be considered new materials when
used to create the piece. Pieces will be selected by the Junk Kouture team. A panel of
judges from Junk Kouture will select approximately 80 semi-finalists from each r egion to
compete at the regional semi-final from which 20 finalists will be selected to showcase their
piece in the final in Dublin in April. The semi finalists and the grand finalists will go through
a public voting system which can be accessed through www.junkkouture.com during the
weeks before the finals where they can earn up to 10% of their semi-final or final points,
the other 90% being awarded by our panel of judges at the semi-final or final.

How will the pieces be selected and judged? What is the criteria?
• 100% reused materials must be used except for thread, tape, glue etc as required
• Design innovation – this includes original style and ‘Blow Us Away’ creativity
• Out of the box – This includes the unique use of used materials and integrity of sourcing
materials, choose waste diverting, not resource consuming for your creations. Don’t
buy things to create your own trash to use
• Quality craftsmanship – this includes how well the piece is constructed
• Completeness of outfit - consideration of an entire outfit, rather than individual
garments (ie: a dress or suit in comparison to just a jacket or just a skirt)
• Bonus points for true waste diversion
• At least one element of electrical waste must be used in the design
• Presentation “Wow Factor - how well the model presents the essence of the piece
*** Please note that visible undergarments such as tights, socks and underwear will not be
taken into account against you as non-recycled materials. Appropriate under garments
must be worn at all times.
Does the piece have to be finished in its entirety at the time of submission?
• Pieces must be finished in their entirety upon submission and will be considered as
it is presented in the submission.
Must the design be an original?
• Submissions must be original, must be the work of the submitting applicant, and
cannot infringe on any copyright, other intellectual property right, or the rights of
privacy, publicity or any other right(s) of any third party
• Artists must adhere to all guidelines as outlined in this brochure
Can I enter more than one piece?
Applicants may submit up to three pieces (total) for entry, however, only one piece per
applicant may be selected to participate in the Junk Kouture recycled Semi-final Fashion
show.
Can I collaborate with other students?
Collaborations are allowed but please keep the following in mind:
• Each artist within the collaboration must be named when completing the
online application form (3 students maximum per piece including the model, no
exceptions.)
Can I use props/dancers in the performance?
• The use of props or dancers is NOT permitted in the semi finals or final fashion show.
Anything other than accessories for the outfit will not be allowed.

How do I submit my entry?
To submit a piece for consideration, the following items must be uploaded onto the website
www.junkkouture.com before the deadline of Thursday 31st January 2013. Incomplete
applications are not guaranteed for consideration.
• Application form filled out on line
• Minimum of two photographs per piece (full length front and back).
We suggest additionally that you:
Photograph the piece on a person or on a mannequin. These 2 photos
will be used to initially judge your design and then in the online voting,
the better these represent your design the better for you. A great design
badly photographed will find it difficult to impress our judges. See to the
right an example of the 2 photos received from an entry last year which
clearly show the piece front and back. Not only is the dress incredible but
the pictures showcase it in the best light. You can also upload up to 4 close
up photographs of any outstanding details that you want considered
• A piece of music to play as the dress is modelled in the show: A
piece of music of 90 seconds in length must be uploaded with
your entry, this will be your piece of music that will be used on the
catwalk should you get through to the semi-finals. There will be a
procedure to change this piece of music up to 2 weeks before the
semi-final should you go through, however, after this deadline the
music cannot be changed. This rule will be strictly adhered to or
points shall be deducted.
• Brief description of the piece:
You will also be required to provide a script which describes your piece, and how it
promotes sustainability, in no more than 50 words. Should you reach the semi-finals,
this will be used to introduce your piece at the show. Again you can change this up to
2 weeks before the show for which you’ve qualified. This rule will be strictly adhered
to or points shall be deducted.
Can we enter as a team?
• There can be a maximum of 3 team members per entry inclusive of model.
Do we need to involve our teacher/school?
• You must give the name and contact details of your art teacher or other applicable
teacher. This named teacher will be given a free back stage pass to all the shows you
qualify for. We will verify their identity with the school and they will need to provide
ID at the show. This is to protect your safety and the safety of other competitors.
• The named teacher on the application will be the one who will receive any prizes
should a prize be won.

What if this teacher can’t attend?
• Should this teacher not be able to attend a show, then we will need confirmation
from your school that they are sending another chaperone
How will I know if I have been selected?
All applicants will be notified on or before 15th February 2013 by email and the qualifiers
will be posted on our facebook page
If I am selected what do I need to organise for the show?
• You must supply a model for the fashion show
• Artists/models will be responsible for their own hair/makeup/accessories
• Artists/models will be responsible for the participation in the fashion show rehearsal
on the day of the event
• Artists are responsible for transportation of the piece to and from show venue on
show date
• Artists are responsible for the backstage dressing space they are given they must
make sure it is left as it’s found
• You will need to provide scripting about your piece for the show
General Terms and Conditions of agreement to participate
By applying and participating, selected artists agree that they meet eligibility requirements
as stated in the Junk Kouture Recycled Fashion Show Competition official rules. By applying
and/or participating, selected artists agree to:
1. Abide by official rules and decisions of judges.
2. To hold producers involved in planning or production of the events harmless from
any claims, actions, or demands, losses, damages, or liabilities arising out of their
participation in the contest and any related activities,
3. Declare the outfits created to be the copyright of the competition organisers “Junk
Kouture” for promotional use in the future.
4. I n any situation of doubt, the decisions of the Junk Kouture team and judges will be
final.
