Tourism <strong>Fiji</strong> Diary of Events for 2010<br />

January<br />

The Suva Rugby Festival<br />

The event will kick off a week of exhilarating<br />

rugby action and entertainment with the<br />

Suva Rugby Union on January 18. There are<br />

188 rugby teams scheduled to participate in<br />

the festival, in addition to the 64 teams from<br />

touch rugby and netball.<br />

July<br />

Bula Festival (annual)<br />

The main festival of the year in <strong>Fiji</strong>, the Bula<br />

Festival takes place in Nadi on Viti Levu.<br />

Everyone dresses up and the event features a<br />

Pacific dancing contest, a Bollywood night and<br />

plenty of music and marching parades. There<br />

is also a Miss Bula competition for which<br />

contestants dress in traditional <strong>Fiji</strong> costumes.<br />

August - September<br />

Sugar Festival (annual)<br />

Sugar cane is one of <strong>Fiji</strong>’s major crops and it is<br />

all the fun of the fair in Lautoka, the main hub<br />

of production. This annual festival features a<br />

Miss Sugar competition, brass bands and a<br />

sugar cane parade<br />

October<br />

The Rising of the Balolo<br />

For two nights in the last quarter of the moon<br />

in October and November a marine delicacy rises<br />

to the surface of the sea to spawn. Known as<br />

the ‘Caviar of the Pacific’ these writhing sea<br />

worms attract the locals who canoe out to sea<br />

with nets and torches to scoop them up in their<br />

thousands. A fun event to watch - when the<br />

<strong>Fiji</strong>an reefs come alive.<br />

8th-10th - <strong>Fiji</strong> Ocean Swim Festival<br />

(annual)<br />

People love to swim in the Pacific and this is<br />

just one of the many swimming events that<br />

takes place all over the region. Both men and<br />

women compete in this prestigious event that<br />

takes place on Malolo Lailai island in a series<br />

of 1.5km and 3km events which culminate on<br />

Sunday with a 10km race around the island.<br />

Diwali (annual)<br />

Diwali is a major event in the Hindu culture<br />

the world over. In <strong>Fiji</strong> the island’s many Hindus<br />

celebrate just like everywhere else with a Festival<br />

of Lights featuring stunning lights and candles<br />

that light up the night.<br />
