The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) is a nonprofit, umbrella 

organization that raises awareness of and supports 36 performing arts 

groups in Southeastern Wisconsin through its annual fundraising 

campaign. 

Mission 

The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) secures community resources and 

improves the quality of life through responsible investment in and financial 

support of the performing arts in Southeastern Wisconsin. 

Vision 

Shaping a diverse, vibrant and sustainable cultural life for all.

UPAF has raised over $234 million in support of the performing arts since its 

inception in 1967. In 2011, UPAF’s annual community-wide fundraising 

campaign allocated over $7.5 million to its Member and Affiliate performing 

arts organizations. 

UPAF Member Groups produce over 2,000 live performances of music, dance, 

theater and opera each year. These performances connect us to new people, 

open our minds to new perspectives and shape a diverse cultural life for us all. 

Additionally, Member Group outreach educates 400,000 area youth each year 

helping improve student confidence, focus and test scores.

Message from Richard A. Meeusen, Chair, Board of Directors: 

Since 1967, your contributions have enabled the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) to support a 

multitude of performing arts groups representing a variety of genres including music, theater, dance 

and opera through a single gift. From a handful of supported organizations at its beginning, UPAF 

currently funds 36 performing arts groups serving Southeastern Wisconsin. 

It is heartening to know that support for the performing arts remains a priority in the community 

throughout the lagging economic environment. In fact, the United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) once 

again exceeded its 2011 Campaign Goal, resulting in over $9.7 M raised from the generous support 

of our community. Reflective of this success, we believe that the overall health of both UPAF and 

our performing arts community is indeed very good. I would like to acknowledge and thank Cristy 

Garcia-Thomas, whose dedication and vision led UPAF in exceeding its campaign goal for each of 

the four years she served as President. I would also like to thank the entire UPAF team and all of our 

contributors for a great year. 

The United Performing Arts Fund (UPAF) implemented significant governance changes in 2011 to 

expand its fundraising capacity and awareness throughout the community. In January, a smaller board 

of directors was impaneled consisting of major donors and significant community leaders who will 

drive the United Performing Arts Fund to its next level of success. 

Over 20,000 donors believe the performing arts are not only relevant, but also indispensable. We look 

forward to continuing our mission of securing community resources and improving the quality of life 

through the responsible investment in and financial support of the performing arts in Southeastern 

Wisconsin.

2011 UPAF Campaign Highlights 

Led by campaign co-chairs Tina M. Chang, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, SysLogic, Inc. and Curt S. Culver, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, MGIC 

Investment Corporation and with the help of over 800 volunteers, UPAF raised over $9.7 million from 20,811 donors. This is a 4% increase over the 2010 campaign. 

• Nearly 175 companies hosted an employee campaign this year, including 11 new 

employee campaigns. Some achievements from those campaigns include: 

• Deloitte & Touche increased their campaign contributions by 30% 

• Johnson Controls illustrated their strong support for Next Generation 

UPAF, with 98 members 

• Baird raised over $200,000 with 95% participation and strong support 

from their Executive team 

• Northwestern Mutual continues to set the pace with an extraordinary 

Campaign, increasing 13% in dollars, resulting in nearly $600,000 in 

employee giving alone 

• 37 companies increased their Leadership Giving, including 

Northwestern Mutual, M&I Bank, A part of BMO Financial Group, and 

Johnson Controls 

• New this year, the Fast Track Business Award recognized one or more companies 

with fewer than 500 employees that increased their support of the UPAF 

Campaign by $5,000 through corporate or matching support, UPAF’s Ride for the 

Arts, sponsored by Miller Lite or employee giving. This year’s awardees are:

• UPAF welcomed over 6,180 new or lapsed donors this year for a total of 

$678,872 new dollars to the campaign. 

• The number of Leadership gifts of $500 or more increased by 4.5%. 

• Next Generation UPAF, founded in 2008 with the purpose of cultivating 

awareness, engagement and philanthropy in UPAF and the performing arts 

by the next generation of community leaders has completed its third full year. 

Next Generation UPAF encourages leadership level giving of $500 or more 

by individuals under 45 years of age. Next Generation UPAF recruited 443 

individuals who contributed over $317,000 to the Campaign this year. 

• Next Generation UPAF recognized several local businesses with their annual 

“Break a Leg” Awards including Johnson Controls for the most Next Gen 

members, We Energies for the largest increase in Next Gen members, and 

Northwestern Mutual for the most creative campaign to recruit new members.

UPAF launched a new initiative, Notable Women, to address the growing need 

for ongoing arts education programming in our community. Notable Women 

seek to support arts education through targeted fundraising initiatives to engage 

current and new contributors who appreciate the impact of arts education in 

developing our future. Founders Tina Chang, Mary Dowell, Sue Frautschi, Cathie 

Madden, Linda Mellowes, Jill Morin, Julia Taylor, Deanna Tillisch and Anne Zizzo 

set a $50,000 goal for this inaugural year and surpassed it with over 54 women 

making a gift in support of this initiative. 

UPAF’s Artist Society for individual donors of $10,000 or more has 46 members, 

representing over $1 million in contributions. 

Support from six key companies is critical to UPAF’s ongoing success. Together, 

these companies provided over $3.8 million to this year’s campaign through 

their employee giving campaigns, special events, foundation and corporate 

contributions. 

• Rockwell Automation, M&I, A part of BMO Financial Group, and Baird each 

contributed over $250,000 

• We Energies and Johnson Controls each contributed over $500,000 

• Northwestern Mutual set the record for a single corporate donation 

exceeding the million dollar mark for the fifth time 

SysLogic, Carlene and Andy Ziegler, M&I, A part of BMO Financial Group and 

MGIC provided challenge matches that were essential in driving new and 

increased dollars to the 2011 Campaign. Thanks in part to these matches, this 

year’s Campaign saw $585,000 in new and $850,000 in increased dollars.

United Performing Arts Fund’s Ride for the Arts, 

sponsored by Miller Lite, Event Highlights: 

• After 31 years, UPAF’s Ride for the Arts, sponsored by Miller Lite, continues to 

be UPAF’s signature fundraising event. 

• For the first time in over 30 years, the spectacular Daniel Hoan Memorial 

Bridge was included in three of the Ride’s five routes. 

• Nearly 7,000 people (an increase of nearly 1,000 riders over 2010) participated 

in UPAF’s Ride for the Arts, sponsored by Miller Lite, on a gorgeous June day. 

• 159 teams and dozens of sponsors helped UPAF’s Ride for the Arts, 

sponsored by Miller Lite, generate a gross revenue of over $548,000. 

• In 2011 Wheel & Sprocket had the largest team with 551 riders, Aurora 

Health Care had the second largest with 274 riders and Northwestern Mutual 

had the third largest team with 202 riders.

• New this year, UPAF created the “Team of the Year” award to encourage 

increased team ridership for UPAF’s Ride for the Arts, sponsored by Miller 

Lite. UPAF recognizes Rockwell Automation for a 144% increase in team 

ridership as the 2011 Team of the Year. 

• Route departure times were adjusted to increase attendance at the 

Finish Line Party. 

• More than 350 volunteers logged 1,200 hours of volunteer service to 

make this one of the nation’s best bicycle rides. 

• The Ride received 8.3 million media impressions in the greater 

Milwaukee area – an increase of 1.3 million from 2010.

Where your gift goes 

UPAF is distributing a total of $7,529,352 in the 2011-12 season to its Member and Affiliate Groups. 

UPAF Member Groups will receive a total of $7,388,532 and $140,820 will go to UPAF Affiliates. 

The allocation of unrestricted operating funds to UPAF Member Groups is based 

on a formula consisting of core funds to ensure stability, as well as additional funds 

based on an assessment of organizational performance. In addition, Member 

Groups earn funds for their participation in, and support of, the annual UPAF 

Campaign. Throughout this rigorous allocation review process, UPAF’s Allocation 

Committee evaluates Member Groups’ submissions relative to their finances, market 

performance, overall management and education/outreach programs. Committee

The Bel Canto Chorus Boy Choirs were created as 

a music performance and education program for 

auditioned boys, emphasizing the development and 

understanding of singing skills. The choirs perform 

several times throughout the year, and have worked 

with the Vienna Boy Choir, Midwest Vocal Express, 

Vocal Arts Academy and Bel Canto Chorus. 

Florentine Opera Company’s Opera Inside Out is an 

interactive, customizable program that gives middle 

and high school students a behind-the-scenes look 

at the many facets of opera production and operarelated 

careers. This modular program introduces 

students to stage direction, costumes, stage makeup, 

lighting, design, props, vocal performance and 

arts administration. 

Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap (MHBT) is Danceworks’ 

signature youth arts education program, serving 

nearly 2,000 students. MHBT teaches life skills 

and impacts school attendance and academic 

performance by integrating tap and ballroom 

dance classes into the regular school curriculum. 

The majority of the schools participating in the 

program are central city schools in low-income 

neighborhoods. 

First Stage offers Creative Drama and Core Drama 

Theater Workshops to students which gives them 

the opportunity to learn skills that will help them 

onstage – presence, expression, focus and projection 

– while simultaneously helping young performers 

develop skills that will help them throughout 

life – self-confidence, discipline, commitment and 

teamwork. 

Milwaukee Ballet’s Relevé outreach program directly 

links the benefits of dance and education for young 

students through a partnership with Milwaukee 

Public Schools. Students have the chance to observe 

Milwaukee Ballet Company dancers rehearse, while 

giving them the chance to see what a professional 

dancer’s day is like as they take weekly classes in a 

real dance studio with professional ballet performers. 

Milwaukee Chamber Theatre partnered with 

Arts@Large, a non-profit organization dedicated to 

keeping arts programs in urban schools, to conduct 

interactive workshops for grade school students. The 

exercises organized are linked to goal setting, with 

an emphasis on responsibility, respect and creative 

problem solving. 

• Milwaukee Children’s Choir Harmony program 

brings free music instruction and performance 

experiences to roughly 250 children who live in the 

City of Milwaukee and attend Milwaukee schools. 

The children receive weekly music classes for several 

months each year, and join MCC and other choirs at 

a spring Roots & Wings Choir Festival where children 

are able to celebrate in song and dance. 

• Milwaukee Public Theatre coordinated with Goodwill 

Industries to create the Tap the Potential program. 

This program celebrated the talent and vision of 

individuals with special needs by providing the local 

community with art shows and performances by 

poets, musicians, storytellers and theatre artists. 

All the performances are intended to challenge 

preconceptions of people with disabilities and 

advocate for full inclusion in the life of the community. 

• The Milwaukee Repertory Theater’s in-school 

programming makes use of theatrical concepts as 

tools for students while meeting curriculum standards 

for language arts, reading, social studies and theater. 

In their Life Skills program, special workshops and 

performances are provided to students to help them 

develop on-stage and in daily life experiences. 

• Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra’s Arts in Community 

Education (ACE) program integrates the arts into 

daily subjects through an innovative curriculum 

which serves as the basis for other components of 

the program. Nationally recognized as one of the 

largest and most comprehensive education programs 

among American orchestras, ACE challenges students 

to connect subjects using the arts and music as a 

common thread. 

• Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra’s 

Progressions program identifies the issue of access 

as a key aspect necessary for changing the image of 

the arts from elitist and irrelevant to empowering 

and constructive. Because of this, young students in 

underserved communities are able to experience the 

power and influence of the performing arts first-hand 

by participating in high impact and high intensity 

individual and small group lessons, master classes and 

a string orchestra.

representation of communities of color in our orchestras, we must sustain 

access to quality education for our young people.”

• Next Act Theatre connects with adults by educating 

them about societal concerns that highlight their 

performances’ themes. Community discussions are 

held to explore topics like wrongful convictions, racial 

profiling and lost time in prison, to more personal 

issues regarding marital relationships, familial bonds 

and misplaced trust. 

• As a part of Present Music’s Creation Project, a 

new program called Music of Nature allowed young 

students, whose schools lack formal music programs, 

to team up with Present Music musicians to explore 

Washington Park’s wild sounds and translate them 

into their own original piece of music. As part of 

an Earth Day Celebration, students were given 

the opportunity to perform their composition at 

Washington Park. 

• Renaissance Theaterworks’ Diversity Series presented 

their new show, Crumbs from the Table of Joy, 

which reflected the “face” of our community by 

representing Milwaukee’s cultural diversity through 

a theatrical experience. The production collaborated 

with UpRooted, a new theater program that explores 

and expresses African American voices and cultural 

experiences with the performing arts, and PEARLS for 

Teen Girls, a local mentoring program for at-risk girls. 

• Skylight Opera Theatre’s education program, 

Enlighten, served over 10,000 children a year and 

includes four distinct program areas including 

KidsWrites, TeenWrites, Stories That Sing and 

Musical Theatre Residencies. Programming includes 

touring shows, workshops and residencies at over 

25 MPS schools. Skylight’s Partner School program, 

which is currently at capacity, brings multiple 

programs to the same school for different age groups 

throughout the year to ensure a deep, ongoing arts 

experience for the children.

Every year Milwaukee Children’s Choir joins with other community school 

children to celebrate through song and authentic folk dancing at the Roots 

& Wings festival. At last year’s festival each child decorated a puzzle piece 

answering the question “What does music mean to you?” Children wrote in 

response: “Music is my life,” “Music comes from within,” “Music makes life 

colorful,” “Music makes my heart sing.” The pieces were assembled and glued 

to beautifully framed poster boards, which were displayed at the concert.

Ever since I was young, I have been in love with the theater. I strongly believe that 

theater not only entertains us, it enriches us... With much exposure to sports events 

on television, or at school on a Friday night, teenagers can easily watch sports 

games. However, experiencing the magic of theater is not so easily accessible to 

teenagers. Teen council has allowed me to appreciate the theater in a new way, 

instead of simply performing it. It has exposed me to skills that I will need for my 

future, such as budgeting, creating agendas and writing minutes for board 

meetings, and the skills of communication.
