May, 1978 Dear Graduate: BISCAYNE COLLEGE 16400 N.W. 32nd Avenue Miami, Florida 33054 (305) 625-1561 The overriding influence on student attitudes today is the economy. Conventional wisdom holds that the benefits of a private general education are far too small to warrant the expense in today's inflated economy. You will give the lie to that low estimate of the economical benefits of a liberal education. You, as generalists, rather than specialists who find all too often after graduation that there are relatively few jobs with their precise qualifications, will find that the number of jobs in the American economy for which a college education is required is rising. You will also discover that the basic capabilities that open doors in this economy - effective communications skills, common sense, and sound judgment - are fundamental goals of a liberal education. Today, fewer and fewer college graduates enter the field of their specialization. But the needs of business remain the same: people who can make decisions, communicate well and work with people. You have been trained for those needs. You have learned to handle the language fluently, to esteem people as individuals and use your rational powers to arrive at correct conclusions.
