<strong>The</strong> <strong>American</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>Classical</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>Athens</strong> was established in<br />

1881 by a consortium <strong>of</strong> nine<br />

<strong>American</strong> universities, with a<br />

mand<strong>at</strong>e to foster the study<br />

<strong>of</strong> Greek thought and life and<br />

to enhance the educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and experience <strong>of</strong> scholars<br />

seeking to become teachers<br />

<strong>of</strong> Greek With a Managing<br />

Committee providing academic<br />

leadership, the <strong>School</strong><br />

pursued its mission, oper<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

on contributions from a<br />

growing body <strong>of</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

colleges and universities<br />

and other interested parties<br />

Within a few years <strong>of</strong> its<br />

founding, the <strong>School</strong> added<br />

archaeological excav<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and research to its primary<br />

focus as a teaching institution<br />

intRODuctiOn & OvERviEW<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>School</strong> campus<br />

Today the <strong>School</strong> provides gradu<strong>at</strong>e students and<br />

scholars from over 180 affili<strong>at</strong>ed North <strong>American</strong><br />

colleges and universities a base for the advanced<br />

study <strong>of</strong> all aspects <strong>of</strong> Greek culture, from antiquity<br />

to the present day it also contributes considerably<br />

to the dissemin<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion about Greek<br />

history and archaeology to the Greek public, as well<br />

as to U S and intern<strong>at</strong>ional scholarly communities<br />

And, it opens its resources to thousands <strong>of</strong> scholars<br />

from Greek and European universities and cultural<br />

institutions annually Guided in academic m<strong>at</strong>ters by<br />

a Managing Committee composed <strong>of</strong> faculty represent<strong>at</strong>ives<br />

from member institutions, and headed by<br />

a Director who, along with a Mellon Pr<strong>of</strong>essor, over-<br />

sees the academic program<br />

in <strong>Athens</strong> and functions as<br />

liaison between the <strong>School</strong><br />

and the Greek community,<br />

the <strong>American</strong> <strong>School</strong> is<br />

widely recognized as one<br />

<strong>of</strong> the leading research centers<br />

in Greece as well as the<br />

most significant resource in<br />

Greece for North <strong>American</strong><br />

scholars <strong>of</strong> ancient<br />

and post-classical Greek<br />

studies<br />

To this day the <strong>American</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Classical</strong> <strong>Studies</strong><br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>Athens</strong> remains, as its<br />

founders envisioned, a priv<strong>at</strong>ely<br />

funded, non-pr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

educ<strong>at</strong>ional institution, and<br />

it continues true to its original<br />

mission: to teach the<br />

archaeology, art, history, language,<br />

and liter<strong>at</strong>ure <strong>of</strong> Greece from earliest times<br />

to the present; to support research through such<br />

avenues as its libraries, its archives, its study centers<br />

<strong>at</strong> Corinth and the Athenian Agora, and its Wiener<br />

Labor<strong>at</strong>ory; to survey and excav<strong>at</strong>e archaeological<br />

sites in Greek lands; and to publish and dissemin<strong>at</strong>e<br />

the results <strong>of</strong> its excav<strong>at</strong>ions and research At<br />

the same time it has expanded its mission and now<br />

recognizes its ever more important role as a cultural<br />

provider to a Greek, European, and intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

community<br />

This report covers the academic years 2006–2007<br />

through 2007–2008, summarizing the <strong>School</strong>’s accomplishments<br />

in teaching, research, excav<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

and public<strong>at</strong>ion over the past two years and outlin-
