MERCED COLLEGE<br />

COMMUNITY SERVICES<br />

The Community Services program at <strong>Merced</strong> <strong>College</strong> has been an integral<br />

part of the <strong>College</strong>’s commitment to provide education, enrichment, and<br />

adventure to the community. The Community Services Program offers the<br />

community an alternative that does not exist in the regular instructional<br />

Classes<br />

Community Service fee-based classes are offered by <strong>Merced</strong> <strong>College</strong> to<br />

district residents interested in studying specific interests and enrichment<br />

areas. Online (Internet) classes are offered throughout the year.<br />

Special Programs for Children and Young Adults<br />

The Community Services Office maintains a variety of programs during<br />

the traditional summer session and throughout the year including <strong>College</strong><br />

for Kids classes, sports camps and workshops, swimming programs, and<br />

summer theater.<br />

Performing Arts<br />

Community Services, from time to time, contracts with artists for theater<br />

performances including special assemblies for local schools. Additionally,<br />

the program sponsors a cooperative of dance instructors to provide public<br />

performances to benefit local scholarship programs.<br />

Workshops and Seminars<br />

These programs deal with community problems and topics of current<br />

interest. They are conducted in cooperation with special interest groups<br />

and other community organizations.<br />

Trips & Tours<br />

Bus tours to museums, historic sites, sporting events, and to dramatic and<br />

musical performances in other areas of California are planned throughout<br />

the year. Nominal fees are charged to offset the cost of the performances<br />

and transportation. Escorted tours to locations throughout the world are<br />

also offered each year.<br />

Traffic Safety School<br />

<strong>Merced</strong> <strong>College</strong> is licensed by the Department of Motor Vehicles to provide<br />

this course for adults and juveniles. With permission from the court of<br />

jurisdiction, taking this course will prevent your citation from appearing<br />

on your record. Traffic School Online, in English and in Spanish, is also<br />

available.<br />

BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS<br />

EMPLOYER-FOCUSED TRAINING<br />

CENTER (ETC)<br />

The Employer-Focused Training Center also known as the Career<br />

Advancement Academy is dedicated to meeting the needs of employees<br />

and job seekers interested in short term vocational training. Courses<br />

available include the Technical Office Occupations program and the<br />

Medical Assistant program. Both of these programs are located at the<br />

<strong>Merced</strong> <strong>College</strong> Business Resource Center in downtown <strong>Merced</strong>. For<br />

CENTER FOR INTERNATIONAL TRADE<br />

DEVELOPMENT (CITD)<br />

The Center for International Trade Development (CITD) is one of 5 centers<br />

located in the state to provide small to medium sized businesses with oneon-one<br />

export and import counseling, technical assistance, training, and<br />

market research.<br />

The CITDs enhance the competitive strength of California businesses<br />

in the international trade marketplace and support international trade<br />

development in their local and regional communities. The network has<br />

existing working relationships with local, industry, federal and international<br />

partners, and has contractual relationships with the U.S. Department of<br />

Commerce, International Trade Administration, the Western United States<br />

Agricultural Trade Association, US Agency for International Development,<br />

and the U.S. Department of Education, Business and International<br />

Education Programs. We serve over 2000 California businesses each<br />

year and offer the following value-added services:<br />

● Individualized assistance to help existing companies and new<br />

ventures strategically evaluate and pursue international business<br />

opportunities<br />

● International business conferences, workshops and seminars<br />

designed to provide information and tools to help enterprises, and<br />

organizations capitalize on global business<br />

● Reference and referral services for specific customs, regulatory, and<br />

operational challenges<br />

● International matchmaking services to include introducing California<br />

companies to potential trading partners through overseas trade<br />

missions, hosting of inbound delegations and trade leads distribution<br />

● Assist community colleges in internationalizing their curricula and<br />

developing specialized programs and courses in international trade<br />

to help prepare California’s workforce to compete and contribute in<br />

the global economy.<br />

WORKPLACE LEARNING RESOURCE<br />

CENTER<br />

Since its inception in 1994, the WpLRC has increased <strong>Merced</strong> Community<br />

<strong>College</strong>’s capacity to deliver training and non-training services to regional<br />

businesses and industries through research, in-service training, and the<br />

development and implementation of innovative training methodologies.<br />

The WpLRC supports essential elements of the California Community<br />

<strong>College</strong> Mission and Goals, which is to advance California’s economic<br />

growth and global competitiveness through education, training, and<br />

services that contribute to continuous work force improvement. The Center<br />

conducts needs assessments and develops on-site programs to retrain<br />

employees or upgrade employees’ skills in a wide variety of subjects. Call<br />
