Volunteers at the animal
Wells County Animal Shelter.
Volunteers can play with kittens
in two socializing rooms and walk
about 10 adoptable dogs.
Since the program started about a
year ago, it’s been popular, said Tina
Morris, shelter manager.
With a staff of three, the shelter
offers a limited volunteer period so
the staff can make runs and assist
with adoptions, Morris said.
But three hours a day, once a week
is enough to provide “enrichment for
the animals,” Morris said.
“It helps relieve their stress,” she
added.
Morris also said she notices a difference
in the animals after volunteer
day.
Inside
“They just seem more relaxed, I
think,” she said. “More relaxed and
more content.”
And those animals who are fearful,
Morris said, are able to socialize
and come out of their shells so they
can be adopted.
By JESSICA WILLIAMS
A second community benefit
is scheduled to help the family of
19-month-old Lana Singleton, who
suffers from a kidney condition.
Lana has nephrotic syndrome,
the News-Banner reported Tuesday,
June 12. The condition has led
to doctors medically shutting down
her kidneys, and when she’s old
enough, she’ll need a transplant.
Besides the daily medical
expenses, a transplant will cost
around $20,000.
Bob Miller, board member of
the Ossian First Church of Nazarene,
said they’ve been throwing
around the idea of a fundraiser for
about six months.
The American Red Cross called
him and wanted to increase the
scale from last year’s drive at the
church, and the two groups decided
to team up for Lana about three
weeks ago, Miller said.
The church will host a blood
Alex Toetz, an incoming Bluffton
about a year ago to earn his
“He needed service hours and he
loves animals so this made sense to
do,” said his mother, Melissa Toetz,
who comes along.
Alex Toetz said his favorite part
of volunteering is seeing the dogs
happy, and even after he earned his
service hours, they keep coming
back.
“It’s fun to walk the dogs,” he
said.
This doesn’t mean they are strictly
dog people, Alex Toetz said. They
sometimes interact with the kittens.
Also, during one volunteer day,
Melissa Toetz said they ended up
adopting two cats.
Countywide
burn ban is
now in effect
By FRANK SHANLY
and DAVE SCHULTZ
The Wells County Commissioners
have issued a
burn ban for Wells County.
Growing concern over the
lack of rain and the risk of
fire due to ongoing weather
conditions have prompted
the commissioners to take
the action.
Thursday’s rainfall,
although it was heavy in
some areas, was not enough
to cause the burn ban to be
lifted.
Effective immediately,
the following activities are
prohibited in Wells County:
• Campfires and other
recreational fires.
• Open burning of any
kind using conventional
fuel such as wood, or other
combustible matter, with the
exception of grills fueled by
charcoal briquettes or propane.
• The burning of debris,
such as timber or vegetation,
including such debris that
results from building construction
activities.
• The use of fireworks.
The ban remains in effect
until midnight on June 30.
Such proclamations can
only be made on a sevenday
basis.
“We were just waiting
for feedback from our
local fire departments,” said
Wells County Commissioner
Kevin Woodward, “and
they felt that the time was
right. We’ll continue to keep
a watch on the situation, and
if we can get a significant
rainfall, then perhaps we can
reconsider the situation.”
Wayne Grove, head of
Wells County Emergency
Management, said his
Amount of
rain varied
by location
Thursday afternoon’s
rainfall was not enough
to remove Wells County’s
burn ban that was put in
place earlier in the day.
Although some areas
received a significant
amount of rainfall, other
areas did not.
Neil Ainslie, the official
National Weather
Service observer for Wells
County, reported 1.9
inches of rain fell at his
location on 500N. Other
nearby areas were not as
fortunate — 0.19 of an
inch at the Fort Wayne
International Airport, 0.41
in Huntington, and 0.80 in
Decatur.
“There was a band
where there was heavy
rain,” Ainslie said.
Local numbers bore
that out. The News-Banner
received reports of
2.6 inches in Rockcreek
Township and only 0.4 of
an inch on Bluffton’s west
side.
Areas to the north and
west much less rain than
areas to the south and east.
Auburn had 0.09 of an
inch of rain and Warsaw
had only a trace of rain.
Unfinished pond’s
content provokes
neighbors’ concern
By FRANK SHANLY
Thursday morning’s meeting of the Area Plan Commission’s
Plat Committee had an unusually large attendance,
with about 20 residents from Jackson and Chester townships
voicing their concern about the intended contents of a pond.
The committee had previously granted Ronald A. Maug
permission to build a pond on high ground on his property
at 1100S-600W. While they didn’t specifically ask Maug if
he intended putting water in the pond, committee members
said that Maug had discussed swimming in it at the meeting
when the permit was issued, so water had been assumed as
the contents, and a permit was issued accordingly.
Maug’s neighbors, however, believe that he intends to
fill it with manure from farms. They are concerned with the
effects that a spill would have on their community, especially
with the Salamonie River not too far away.
Resident Gene Boyer presented the committee with two
pages of signatures of neighbors from the immediate vicinity
who had indicated their concern.
Maug was not present at the meeting.
Area Plan Commission Director Mike Lautzenheiser Jr.,
who also serves as a member of the plat committee, said that
the permit was issued for the pond to contain water. He said
if Maug puts anything else into it, the permit becomes void.
Lautzenheiser added that if Maug wanted to subsequently
turn the pond into a lagoon for manure storage he would
implement it,” Grove said.
Plummer and Grove met
Thursday. Grove said Plummer
contacted other county
fire chiefs and discussed the
ban.
Plummer had wanted to
avoid the formal declaration,
preferring instead to educate
individuals on the risks. As
every nearby county put a
burn ban into effect, however,
the pressure built for
Wells County to follow suit.
The burn ban follows
a model declaration put
end of the summer but plans
on coming back after that.
The best part for him is
seeing “the way that they
always love to see people,”
he said of the animals.
Teeple isn’t even from
Bluffton; he’s from Adams
County and found the shelter
online.
The shelter appreciates
his efforts, Morris said.
Sally McRoden has
brought her daughters often
since last summer, especially
during breaks from school.
They’ll come back,
McRoden said, but she had
to make a deal with her kids.
2nd benefit
day, July 20.
The blood drive will be
held from 1 p.m. to 7:30
p.m. and the fish fry will be
4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets
for the all-you-can-eat
dinner are $8.50 in advance
and $9 at the door.
The goal is to collect 80
units of blood and sell 300
advance tickets for the fish
fry, which also includes tenderloins.
“Our job is to help the
community,” Miller said.
He said he personally
couldn’t imagine raising that
kind of money for one of his
children, and so as a church
they wanted to help out.
“I think it’s going to be
a good time,” said Tiffany
Traynor, Lana’s mother. “I
hope people will come.”
Unfinished pond
need permits from the Indiana
Department of Environmental
Management.
Lautzenheiser also
advised that his office has
written to Maug, asking for
immediate written confirmation
of what exactly he
intends to put in the pond.
Committee members
noted that until they have
concrete evidence that Maug
is using the pond to store
something other than water,
they cannot revoke permission
for the pond.
Lautzenheiser did assure
the residents that he would
respond immediately should
he receive notification that
Maug was setting up to
pump something other than
water into the pond. At that
time, the permit could be
declared void, and further
action would be considered
as appropriate.
Residents Ryan Carroll
and C.J. Mounsey asked if
laws could be introduced to
prevent people from dumping
manure into ponds.
Most of the residents indicated
supported this move,
with none speaking against
it. Committee member Jarrod
Hahn indicated that this
could possibly be addressed
Department of Homeland
Security. The state fire marshal’s
office is a division of
IDHS.
It does apply to Bluffton,
Ossian, Markle, and the
other incorporated areas of
Wells County as well as the
unincorporated areas. Mayor
Ted Ellis said his reading
of the law indicates that the
city could exempt itself if it
wanted to — but he would
not do so in this case.
The proclamation issued
Thursday makes no direct
mention of penalties. It does
cite an Indiana law — IC 10-
“That was the rule when
we started: they couldn’t beg
to bring them home,” she
said.
The shelter has about six
“hardcore” volunteers, Animal
Control Officer Jesse
Marley said.
Warmer weather increases
volunteer attendance, but
cold weather doesn’t deter
everyone.
“We do still have our
faithful volunteers who
come in even in the winter,”
Morris said.
But when it’s too cold or
too hot, everyone has to stay
inside.
The church is looking for
sponsors to provide monetary
support.
Miller said he hopes the
through the county’s zoning
ordinance, but the process
involved in making the
amendments will take time.
Bob Lee of Jackson
Township, who owns a confined
animal feeding operation,
spoke to end a rumor
that his operation was going
to use Maug’s pond to dispose
of manure.
“I’m getting phone
calls telling me I’m putting
manure into this pond,” said
Lee. “I’m not. We take care
of our own,” he said, indicating
the manure.
The residents stressed
they had no problem with
the pond being used for
water. However they doubted
that this was indeed its
intended use.
In other business, the
committee:
• Supported a development
plan for a new Dollar
General building in Ossian.
The 9,100-square-foot building
will be north of Ossian,
on the left hand side of the
road next to Ossian Furniture.
The proposed parking
lot will have 30 spaces, and
the sanitary connection will
be at the intersection of Ind.
1 and Davis Road. The plan
will now be presented to the
Area Plan Commission on
14-3-29 — that states that
anyone violating a section of
the law commits a Class B
misdemeanor, which carries
a sentence of not more than
180 days and a fine of not
more than $1,000.
Sheriff Monte Fisher said
the goal for both county and
city police officers was not
to write a bunch of tickets,
but to warn individuals of
the dangers of an open fire.
“If they continue and
refuse our request, they
could be cited,” Fisher said.
frank@news-banner.com
“It all comes down to the
health and safety of the animals,”
Morris said. “And the
Volunteers can come in
Pool cleared after chemical spill
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A possible
chemical reaction at an Indianapolis pool
sent 71 people to hospitals Thursday, authorities
said.
Indianapolis Fire Department spokesman
Lt. Derrick Sayles said buses were used to
transport some of the victims to hospitals
after the incident at Garfield Park on the
city’s south side. Symptoms experienced
included nausea, coughing and eye irritation.
Sayles said most people were in fair
condition and would likely be released after
treatment.
Sayles said the cause of the reaction was
not clear. He said the operator of a pump that
mixes a purifying chemical into the pool’s
water was among the injured, and investigators
were unable to immediately speak to
that person.
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard went to
the scene and said the city would investigate
to determine what caused the incident.
Former prison guard is
sentenced in wife’s death
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — A former
prison guard has been sentenced to 64
years in prison for killing his estranged
wife after she brought their children
to his central Indiana home to catch a
school bus.
A Delaware County judge ordered
the sentence Thursday, saying 37year-old
Benjamin Hankins of Gaston
showed a cold indifference to his wife’s
suffering by waiting several minutes to
call authorities after shooting her three
times.
A jury in April convicted Hankins
of murder for the June 2011 shooting
of 32-year-old Lisa Hankins.
The Star Press reports Thursday’s
hearing to say he intended to appeal.
Hankins last month gave a rambling
49-minute statement, maintaining he
was a police conspiracy victim.
Hankins was a Gaston police
of our son and brother, Zack.
We have been overwhelmed with all the cards,
given to support us.
Thank you to Wells County Officers A.J.
Special thanks to our son, Luke, who spoke from
his heart at the service. He said what many family
members and friends needed to hear.
We miss Zack so much and are so deeply
sadden that he will never be able to fulfill his
heaven. We will never forget the love shown to us
during this difficult time. Please continue to keep
us in your prayers.
The Week That Was - a look back at the week through cartoonists’ eyes...
Why am I so tired?
It is midnight as I write this column. I
was still working at 2 a.m. last night, was
up at 6 a.m. this morning, spent 10 hours
at Disney World and then drove five
hours to Valdosta, Ga., before forcing
myself to stop for the night.
Now I am working.
All of this is simply business as usual
for me, but today — this particular day
— I feel extraordinarily tired. Exhausted
might be a better word.
Perhaps the previous three weeks of
Jerry
Battiste
Just
Jerry
vacation are finally taking their toll.
Too much sun, sand and surf; family
visits, barbecues, miniature golf,
roller skating; a day at Dollywood
and more driving than I care to
remember.
Tomorrow (today, as you read this) I will endeavor to
finish the last 799 miles of my trip home to Indiana, and
frankly, I can’t wait to get there and go to bed. Directly to
bed. Will not pass Go and will not collect $200.
My job allows me to travel. I can pack up my laptops
(I have three of them now) and take them any where I
choose. As long as I have Internet access I can now do my
work from anywhere. Of course, just because I can take
my work on vacation with me doesn’t mean I can’t do it. It
just means I can do it after everyone else goes to bed. After
spending hours on the beach; playing with the girls or visiting
with family; when they all go to bed, I start working.
Most nights I finish around 2 or 3 a.m. But at least a few
times I was still working well after 4 a.m.
Well, all those late nights seem to be taking a toll on me.
I still have my boyish good looks. That’s not the problem.
As Indiana Jones once said, “It’s not the years, it’s the
miles.” And I have a lot of miles. In fact, if I were a used
car I would be worthless as a trade-in if you didn’t roll back
my odometer a few hundred thousand miles.
Of course, as Paul Beitler knows, I age well. Unfortunately,
looks can be deceiving. I might not be aging at the
same speed as everyone else but I still have a normal expiration
date. One day I will go to bed a very young looking
old man and wake up a pile of dust. There is no escaping
my destiny.
So, when I have a night like tonight, where I actually
feel the wear and tear I have been putting on my wellbeing,
I worry that tonight will be that night. That tomorrow
morning I won’t need a wake-up call from the front
desk, I’ll just need the maid to bring in a Hoover and
vacuum me up.
Then again, I am an eternal optimist. I’ll set my alarm
as usual, work all night, plan to sleep for a few hours and
finish up those 799 miles in about 12 hours tomorrow
after downing an extra large iced coffee and a couple jelly
doughnuts. I will renew my driver’s license and keep buying
penny stocks in the hopes that both will eventually pay
dividends, but if they don’t I won’t be any worse off than I
am right now.
Speaking of which I would like to take a moment to
tell you what a wonderful time I had these past few weeks
with my daughters; visiting my family (though I didn’t get
to see them all) and just spending time away. It was good,
real good, and I needed it. I didn’t realize just how much I
needed it until I had it, and now that it is over I am already
starting to miss it.
Fortunately for me my summer vacation season is not
quite over. Next week, Tuesday in fact, I will be 4,000
miles away, in Merry Olde England for another extended
“vacation.” I will be visiting my girlfriend’s family in a
small village just north of London and traipsing around the
UK like the vagabond Yankee I am; drinking pints (which
is the national pasttime over there) eating lime pickle and
poppadoms and searching for Doctor Who merchandise
(which is very hard to find over here).
And of course, I’ll be bringing my laptops. So stay tuned
for regular weekly updates.
Obama: Keep the change
CHICAGO -- He had just been through the
roughest patch of President Obama’s re-election
struggle and yet senior adviser David Axelrod
seemed, if not quite serene, then at least amiably
stoic.
Chatting in his spartan office at the Obama
campaign’s mother ship in downtown Chicago
last week, Axelrod reflected on a pep talk he had
delivered the previous day to the operation’s vast
and impressively young staff, urging them to ignore
all the intimations that a gaffe, some bad economic
numbers and a bit of downward movement in some
polls spelled doom for their cause.
“There is some virtue in being old in this business,”
Axelrod, 57, said, reliving what amounted to
his moment as a coach asking the team to dig deep
after a tough quarter -- though he used a different
metaphor. “It’s like being an old astronaut. I’ve been
up to the space shuttle before. I’ve experienced the
G’s before. It doesn’t make them less comfortable.
But you’ve experienced them before.”
As Axelrod spoke, his boss’ image appeared on
the television screen on his desk. Obama was offering
a speech in Cleveland aimed at giving substance
to Axelrod’s hopes by shifting the dialogue away
from immediate troubles to a larger choice “between
two paths for our country.”
Whether or not last Thursday’s rhetorical volley
between Obama and Mitt Romney on the economy
was one of those “defining” or “game-changing”
moments that pundits love to tout, it was a powerfully
instructive passage in the campaign. It made
clear not only how fundamentally different Obama’s
and Romney’s ideas for the future are but also how
the next four months or so will involve a bitter contest
to shape the way voters perceive what’s at stake
in November.
Romney will talk a great deal about economic
freedom and enterprise, but mostly he wants to
make this a classic throw-the-bums-out election.
His core message is about as simple as political
arguments come: Things are bad. Obama didn’t fix
them. Try the other guy, i.e., me.
Obama is not blessed with the opportunity to be
simple. He has to show that he knows things are
bad for a lot of people but also insist that his policies
made things a whole lot better than they would
have been. He has to argue that the Republicans
The Bad & the Good
If only the good die young, I think I’ll
be bad; but not to worry. Even when I’m
bad…I’m good.
Just because you have a degree doesn’t
necessarily mean you have an education.
—Anonymous
Schindler
The Funguy
“Are you diabetic?” the nursed asked 80-year-old Jim
Brazill, who is quite a jokester.
“No I’m Catholic.”
“I didn’t ask you that.” The nurse, a little surprised by
the answer said, “I asked you if you were diabetic.”
“I’ve lived in Fort Wayne for over fifty years,” Jim
went on, “and I didn’t know they had a church.”
Rolling her eyes, she looked at the doctor and said,
“What do you want me to do?”
“Ask him another question,” the doctor answered,
grinning from ear to ear. “This is fun.”
Jim Schindler is a Fort Wayne businessman
and author who grew up in Decatur
are blocking his proposals to improve the
economy, but he doesn’t want to look like a
politician inventing an alibi.
Above all, he has to persuade swing voters
(Axelrod estimates that, at most, they constitute
15 percent of the electorate) to see this
as something other than an ordinary election.
Obama’s speech was his most comprehensive
effort to date to (1) tie Romney to George
W. Bush’s tax cuts, his deregulation policies
and those “two wars on the nation’s credit
card”; (2) harness Romney to Republicans in
Congress; and, most important, (3) make clear that
Romney would break with the country’s long-standing
consensus “that the market couldn’t solve all our
problems on its own.” Government, Obama insisted,
still needs to help workers, entrepreneurs and consumers
alike.
This last point actually is an accurate description
of the policy choice this fall. It means that Obama
has a powerful interest in a rather high-toned, philosophical
debate over taxes, spending and also over
how jobs are created, how economies grow, and
where government fits into the picture. In turn, this
will prompt a battle to influence the media’s narrative.
Since Romney wants the country to render an
uncomplicated negative verdict on Obama’s stewardship,
he has every incentive to keep ideological
subplots and policy contrasts out of the storyline.
Axelrod was thus in a reasonably good mood as
he watched his candidate on the small screen, figuring
(correctly as it turned out) that a lengthy, specifics-heavy
speech would force at least a day of news
stories on the “big choice” theme.
He even ventured into contested territory by
insisting, contrary to all the reports that Obama’s
soaring 2008 themes were dead and buried, that
“this is still about hope -- our hope is still about
the things we need to do to secure the future.” And
with the campaign trying to connect Romney to the
Bush past, is it outlandish to imagine that it would
be tempted to resurrect the other half of 2008’s
formula with the tongue-in-cheek slogan “Keep the
change”?
Perhaps that’s a step too far, but it captures
Obama’s desire to become a change agent again by
turning his opponent into a restorationist.
Portugal
advances to
Euro semis
Ronaldo scores
lone goal to
down Czechs
By RAF CASERT
AP Sports Writer
WARSAW, Poland (AP)
— After his powerful header
lifted Portugal into the
semifinals of the European
Championship, Cristiano
Ronaldo looked ahead at the
possibilities, not behind at
his achievement.
Ronaldo scored in the
79th minute for a 1-0 victory
over the Czech Republic
on Thursday. The Portuguese
dominated the action
and Ronaldo hit the post
twice, then finally delivered.
He headed a cross by
Joao Moutinho straight at
the ground and up past the
flailing hands of Czech goalkeeper
Petr Cech, who was
spectacular in defeat.
“Expectations are high,”
the Real Madrid star said.
“We have to keep our feet
firmly on the ground and
take one step at a time. We
have to win the next game.
The goal is to get to the
final.”
This was Ronaldo’s third
goal in two games and it
rewarded the Portuguese for
the relentless pressure they
applied all match.
“I remember in the last
game I hit the post twice,
too,” Ronaldo said. “But
the most important thing is I
managed to score this time,
we won and are in the semifinals.
Now it is big smiles
and good music.”
Portugal will play Spain
or France in the semifinals
in Donetsk, Ukraine, on
Wednesday. It is one victory
from its second European
Championship final in eight
years; the Portuguese lost at
home to Greece in the 2004
title game.
Ronaldo already provided
some leadership and two
goals to get past the Netherlands
in group play, and his
encore Thursday was huge.
“It’s just that Ronaldo is
better. He can play with his
head, with both feet,” Czech
Republic coach Michal
Bilek said. “That decided
the match.”
His goal finally punished
the tactics of the Czechs,
who had parked most of
their players in front of Cech
for much of the game.
The Czechs did not have
a shot on goal, and only two
attempts during the match.
The Euro 2004 runners-up
had 20 attempts.
“The Czechs didn’t have
a single chance,” Ronaldo
said.
The strategy worked for
a while. In first-half injury
time, Ronaldo deadened a
cross from Raul Meireles
on his chest, turned and with
two touches set up a rightfoot
shot that had Cech beaten
before it crashed against
the near post.
In the 49th, Ronaldo
again clipped the post on a
free kick from 25 yards.
“In the second half, we
lost our strength and determination
and they had one
chance that decided the
match,” Bilek said.
By then, Ronaldo had hit
the post four times in two
games. When he finally
scored and was mobbed by
teammates, he went over to
the TV camera with a beaming
smile and offered a victory
kiss.
“We have suffered,” Portugal
forward Nani said.
“But we always wanted
to win and that’s what we
showed. We were superior,
then we scored and we really
deserved this result.”
At the final whistle, Ronaldo
dropped to his knees
with clenched fists, then rose
as Miguel Veloso jumped
into his arms in celebration.
For the second match in a
row, Ronaldo has dominated
for Portugal. And as a result,
Portugal is still in the hunt
for its first major title.
“We had a lot of chances,”
Ronaldo said. “We had
a great unity on the pitch and
that is why we have reached
our goal.”
The Czechs started without
captain Tomas Rosicky,
who hadn’t recovered from
an Achilles tendon injury to
start in the country’s most
important game since it lost
in the Euro 2004 semifinals.
Tigers win over Cardinals in 10
By NOAH TRISTER
AP Baseball Writer
DETROIT (AP) — Quintin Berry slapped
a base hit through the drawn-in infield, then
took off for first base. He raised both hands
in the air in celebration, rounded the bag and
ripped off his helmet.
“I’ve never had a walk-off before,” the
Detroit outfielder said. “I showed it out there,
jumping around, acting crazy. You don’t
know what to do with yourself.”
Berry’s tiebreaking RBI single in the 10th
inning gave the Tigers a 2-1 win over the St.
Louis Cardinals on Thursday. It was another
bright moment for the 27-year-old rookie,
who is hitting .315 on the year.
Detroit also got an encouraging performance
from another youngster. Jacob Turner
allowed a run and four hits in five innings in
his first start of the season.
“He did fine. I will say this: He’s much
improved,” Detroit manager Jim Leyland
said. “There’s no question about that. He’s
much improved from the last time I saw him,
particularly at the big league level.”
Prince Fielder homered for the Tigers.
Ramon Santiago and Jhonny Peralta started
the winning rally with one-out singles off
Victor Marte (0-1), who then grazed Austin
Jackson’s jersey with a pitch. Berry followed
with a grounder up the middle to end it, and
the Tigers poured onto the field to mob him.
“They gave me a good shot, but it’s the
best feeling you could get, being ripped up a
little bit,” Berry said. “I’ll let them do it every
day.”
Joaquin Benoit (1-1) got the win.
Kyle Lohse allowed a run and four hits in
seven innings for the Cardinals.
The 21-year-old Turner was recalled from
Triple-A Toledo before the game. Left-hander
Drew Smyly has been out because of a blister
on his left middle finger.
Turner kept the Tigers in the game while
their offense struggled. He walked five —
one intentionally — and struck out three.
Fielder put Detroit in front with a 425-foot
homer in the fourth. The slugging first baseman
flipped his bat forward after making
contact with his huge uppercut swing, and
there was no doubt about his 11th homer of
the year.
“I was going to bounce a breaking ball,”
Lohse said. “Unfortunately, I missed bouncing
it by about four feet and Prince killed it.”
The lead didn’t last long. With one out and
men on second and third in the fifth, Matt
Holliday lifted a foul fly that Detroit right
fielder Don Kelly caught while almost falling
into the seats. The tying run came home on
the play, but after an intentional walk to Carlos
Beltran, Turner got out of the inning on a
flyout by Allen Craig.
Kelly appeared OK after his catch but
eventually left in the eighth with a left knee
contusion. He is day to day.
Turner, a first-round draft pick in 2009,
posted an 8.53 ERA in three starts last year.
He was named Detroit’s top prospect by
Baseball America earlier this year, and he
acquitted himself fine in his return to the big
leagues — against his hometown team, too.
Turner grew up about 25 miles outside St.
Louis, and current Cardinals manager Mike
Matheny actually helped mentor him in high
school.
“My parents came up for the game,” Turner
said. “I grew up rooting for the Cardinals,
so it’s kind of surreal to pitch against them.”
After Turner departed, Octavio Dotel, Phil
Coke, Brayan Villarreal and Benoit pitched
the next five innings, holding the Cardinals to
two hits and striking out six.
The Tigers are without closer Jose Valverde,
who has an injured right wrist.
Daniel Descalso hit a leadoff double
against Coke in the seventh, but the Cardinals
couldn’t get him home.
Detroit intentionally walked Beltran with
first base open again in the 10th, and again
the move worked. Craig popped out with
men on first and second to end the threat.
Tigers catcher Alex Avila had a single in
his return from a right hamstring injury.
NOTES: The Tigers optioned C Bryan
Holaday to Toledo to make room for Avila.
... The Tigers announced a scoring change
from a wacky play in a June 16 game against
Colorado. The Rockies misplayed Miguel
Cabrera’s comebacker into a Little Leaguestyle
home run, and although there were initially
two errors charged on the play, Cabrera
is now being credited with a single in addition
to the two errors. ... Detroit now travels
to Pittsburgh for a three-game series. Doug
Fister (1-3) takes the mound Friday night for
the Tigers against A.J. Burnett (7-2). ... St.
Louis plays three games at Kansas City. Joe
Kelly (0-0) starts for the Cardinals on Friday
night against Vin Mazzaro (3-1).
Mathis’ ace propels him into lead
By PAT EATON-ROBB
Associated Press
CROMWELL, Conn.
(AP) — David Mathis hoped
to start strong at the Travelers
Championship after
missing the cut last week in
the U.S. Open.
The 38-year-old Mathis
birdied his first hole, then
holed out from 158 yards
on the par-3 11th hole. He
knocked in a 49-foot birdie
putt on his third, was at 6under
par after six holes, and
fished with a 6-under 64 for
a one-shot lead.
“It was an awesome
start,” said Mathis, who has
never finished better than
eighth in a PGA Tour event.
“I was hitting a lot of great
shots (later), and I guess it
felt like a lull compared to
how I started.”
Nathan Green, Will Claxton
and defending champion
Fredrik Jacobson shot 65 on
a day that saw temperatures
soar into the upper 90s.
U.S. Open champion
Webb Simpson and Masters
winner Bubba Watson played
together and finished in a
group of 10 at 66. The third
member of the threesome,
PGA champion Keegan
Bradley, shot a 68.
“We were relaxed all
day,” Simpson said. “Bubba
is my Presidents Cup partner.
We always laugh
together. And I’ve played a
lot of golf with Keegan this
year. He’s a good friend. We
had a lot of fun feeding off
each other, and luckily, we
all played well.”
Mathis’ ace was the shot
of the day. He said he was
just trying to cut a nine iron
close to the pin and hit it
exactly where he aimed.
“It kind of bounced and
stumbled right and went right
in the hole,” he said.
Green teed off at 6:50
a.m., well before heat and
humidity set in, setting the
early mark with a 65. Claxton
opened his round with a
birdie and an eagle, but finished
with a bogey on 18.
“To start out birdie-eagle,
that’s huge,” Claxton said.
“I obviously had the driver
going. I drove the ball well
today. It wasn’t as difficult as
I thought it might be.”
Jacobson, who picked up
his only PGA Tour win at
the event a year ago, spent
much of the day atop the
leaderboard before a double
bogey on 16 dropped him to
5 under and into a three-way
tie for second.
“I knew it was going to
be challenging in this heat,
and if you start to miss a few
shots, it can get to you,” he
said. “So I was just happy to
get through this day.”
One of Jacobson’s playing
partner’s, former Masters
champion Zach Johnson,
also had a tough finish. He
was 3 under when he hit a
drive over the green at 15. He
made a 6 there and a seven
on the par-4 17th, where he
tried to putt from the fringe,
and needed three more after
making it to the green.
A gallery of fans five and
six deep greeted Simpson,
Watson, and Bradley on
the first tee, and many followed
them throughout what
all three said was a relaxed
round.
“Any time you can play
with those guys, it’s fun,”
Watson said. “We learn from
each other. We watch each
other. We’re making some
jokes out there. We were
having a good time. It was
good.”
But it wasn’t fun for
everybody. Former UCLA
star Patrick Cantlay made
his professional debut with a
75 on the same course where
he made headlines last year
with a second-round 60 as a
19-year-old amateur.
“I started off poorly with
a couple of doubles and couple
weird things happened,
and it just added up to a bad
round,” Cantlay said.
Sandra Changkija
tops leaderboard
WATERLOO, Ontario
(AP) — Sandra Changkija
birdied six of her final eight
holes for a career-best 8under
63 and a three-stroke
lead Thursday during the
suspended first round of the
inaugural Manulife Financial
LPGA Classic.
Play was suspended at
4:20 p.m. because of the
threat of lightning in the
area, and called off for the
rest of the day at 6:30 p.m.
Seventy-two players were
unable to finish the round.
Changkija, making her
eighth start in her rookie
season, parred her first six
holes after beginning play
on No. 10, then birdied Nos.
16 and 18. With the wind
picking up on the Grey Silo
course, she birdied No. 2
and Nos. 4-8 for a frontnine
30.
“My ball striking’s been
good, you know, for most
every tournament I’ve
played in,” said Changkija.
And for his teammates, who watched the
Dallas Mavericks celebrate on their floor
last year.
James left the game along with Dwyane
Wade and Chris Bosh for good with 3:01
remaining for a round of hugs and the start for
a party he’s been waiting for since arriving in
the NBA out of high school as the No. 1 pick
of the 2003 draft. James hopped up and down
in the final minutes, shared a long hug with
opponent Kevin Durant, and then soaked in
the “MVP! MVP! chants during the raucous
postgame.
“I wanted to become a champion someday,”
James said. “I didn’t know exactly
when it would happen, but I put in a lot of
hard work.”
He was a choker last year, the guy who
came up small in the fourth quarter, mocked
for “shrinking” in the moment while playing
with what he called “hatred” in trying to prove
his critics wrong.
He came to Miami seeking an easier road
to the finals but found it tougher than he
expected, the Heat coming up empty last year
and nearly getting knocked out in the Eastern
Conference finals this time by Boston. Facing
elimination there, James poured in 45 points
on the road to force a Game 7 and the Heat
won it at home.
“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done as
a basketball player,” James said. “You just put
a lot of hard work into it and you hope that
one day it will pay off for you.”
This time, with a chance to clinch, the
Heat took control in the second quarter,
briefly lost it and blew the game open again
in the third behind their role players. James
was content to pass to wide-open three-point
shooters, while the Thunder focused all their
attention on him.
The disappointment of losing to Dallas in
six games a year ago vanished in a blowout of
the demoralized Thunder, who got 32 points
and 11 rebounds from Durant.
Bosh and Wade, the other members of
the Big Three who sat alongside James as he
promised titles at his Miami welcoming party,
both had strong games. Bosh, who wept as the
Heat left their own court after losing Game 6
last year, finished with 24 points and Wade
scored 20. The Heat also got a huge boost
from Mike Miller, who made seven threepointers
and scored 23 points.
That all made it easier for James, the
most heavily scrutinized player in the league
since his departure from Cleveland, when he
announced he was “taking his talents to South
Beach” on a TV special called “The Decision”
that was criticized everywhere from
water coolers to the commissioner’s office.
James has said he wishes he handled things
differently, but few who watched the Cavs fail
to assemble championship talent around him
could have argued with his desire to depart.
In Miami he found a team that didn’t need
him to do it alone, though he reminded everyone
during this sensational postseason run
that he still could when necessary. He got support
whenever he needed it in this series, from
Shane Battier’s 17 points in Game 2 to Mario
Chalmers’ 25 in Game 4.
In the clincher it was Miller, banged up
from so many injuries that he limped from the
bench to scorer’s table when he checked in.
He made his fourth three-pointer of the half
right before James’ fast-break basket capped a
15-2 run that extended Miami’s lead to 53-36
with 4:42 remaining in the first half.
The Thunder were making a remarkably
early trip to the finals just three years after
starting 3-29, beating the Mavericks, Lakers
and Spurs along the way. With Durant,
Russell Westbrook, Serge Ibaka and James
Harden all 23 or younger, the Thunder have
the pieces in place for a lengthy stay atop the
Western Conference.
But their inexperience showed in this
series, a few questionable decisions, possessions
and outright mistakes costing them in
their franchise’s first finals appearance since
Seattle lost to Chicago in 1996. Westbrook
scored 19 but made only four of his 20 shots,
unable to come up with anything close to his
43-point outing in Game 4, and Harden finished
a miserable series with 19.
RACING NEWS
Hendrick credits Letarte
for Earnhardt’s revival
By JENNA FRYER
AP Auto Racing Writer
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Rick Hendrick gave little warning to his crew
chiefs when he decided to make widespread organizational changes after the
2010 season.
Among the swaps? Moving Steve Letarte away from four-time NASCAR
champion Jeff Gordon after five full seasons for a daunting job — guiding Dale
Earnhardt Jr. out of his lengthy slump.
“I walked in one day unannounced and said, ‘Next year, you’re not going to
have Jeff Gordon, you’re going to have Dale Earnhardt,”’ Hendrick said. “No
one knew what was going to happen. When I told him, within 15 minutes he was
in his car driving to Dale’s house, and he said, ‘I’m going to sit down with Dale
and we’re just going to talk about racing, about life, about each other, what each
of us want to accomplish.”’
It was a critical moment for NASCAR’s most popular driver, who in his 51st
race with Letarte finally broke a four-year losing streak with his victory Sunday
at Michigan.
Earnhardt had been through the wringer. It started in 2007, when he made the
difficult decision to leave his late father’s race team and chose Hendrick Motorsports
after the most frenzied free-agent pursuit in NASCAR history. The first
season with Hendrick in 2008 was OK as Earnhardt won a race and made the
Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.
The next two years were terrible, and Hendrick had to fire Earnhardt’s cousin,
Tony Eury Jr., when the two could no longer function as driver and crew chief.
Then came Lance McGrew, who couldn’t get the No. 88 team turned around.
So it was up to Letarte, a Hendrick Motorsports lifer who had started as a
part-time employee as a teenager in 1995. Hired full-time as a tire specialist, he’d
risen through the company ranks to crew chief working only with Gordon.
Starting over was going to take some relationship-building, and Letarte went
right to work.
“They were together all the time. That created that trust ... Dale does not trust
everybody,” Hendrick said. “Chemistry is so important. Sometimes you never
hit the right combination. But, man, I look back and I think we’re very fortunate
— didn’t have any idea it was going to be this good. But I think that the chemistry
between these two guys, and I’ve been doing this for 30 years, is as good as or
better than any I’ve ever seen.”
Letarte’s biggest responsibility was rebuilding Earnhardt’s confidence, shattered
during his slump. He coached Junior outside the race car, and cheered him
over the team radio, and it didn’t take long last season to see Earnhardt starting to
believe in himself again.
Only that’s not where Earnhardt believes Letarte made the biggest difference.
Letarte’s best work, the driver said, was in setting some rules for NASCAR’s biggest
superstar.
“He didn’t really have to sell me on anything, I just did whatever he said,”
Earnhardt said. “And the first thing he said was, ‘Man, this is going to be a little
different. I’m going to need you to be accountable.’ He gave me all kinds of little
restrictions and things he needed me to do, and places he needed me to be.
“That structure and accountability was good for me. This team has been successful
for years, and I knew he’s got to have a pattern for it to be that way, so I
just did what he told me.”
Letarte has grown up in the Hendrick organization, and much of his approach
in dealing with people he learned from the team owner. He also worked for years
under Ray Evernham, who guided Gordon to three championships, and he’s been
side-by-side since 2002 with Chad Knaus, who won five-straight titles with Jimmie
Johnson.
What Letarte learned over the years is that accountability in the workplace
is as critical as the car itself. He needed Earnhardt engaged, and to be available
when the team engineers needed feedback.
It was non-negotiable.
“This is how this building has always operated. It operated that way when
Ray was here, I think Chad and I learned a lot from him, how he ran his race
team,” Letarte said. “There are expectations set forth for every employee whether
you’re the tire man, engineer, engine man or the driver. The driver isn’t a subcontractor,
he’s a team member.
“I think those expectations were laid out, they’ve been met 110 percent. It’s
not what people say in life that makes a difference, it’s what people do. I think
those actions have spoken louder than any words that could have been said within
the team to get everybody fired up and pulling on the same side of the rope.”
It’s hard to question Letarte’s methods considering the turnaround Earnhardt
has made.
Although he didn’t win last season, he returned to the Chase field for the first
time since 2008. This year, the losing streak has finally ended, and Earnhardt
leads the Sprint Cup series with 12 top-10 finishes through 15 races. He is the
only driver to complete every lap this season.
Earnhardt heads to Sunday’s road course race at Sonoma, where he’s never
notched a top-10 finish, ranked second in the standings and a legitimate championship
contender.
Hendrick, two days after Earnhardt’s dominating win at Michigan, couldn’t
praise Letarte enough for the job he’s done.
“Stevie has a unique way of putting his arm around him and saying, ‘Look,
Bubba, we’re in this together, together we’re going to do this, this is what I’m
going to do, this is what you need to do,”’ Hendrick said. “To go from doubting
what he had, to feeling like he has the best (team) in the garage, that’s a tremendous
job. I think it’s probably the hardest job out there.”
When he’s drinking ...
Dear Annie: My husband and I
are in our 60s and have been married
for 28 years. We recently retired. My
husband and I both enjoy stopping
at neighborhood bars for a drink
before dinner, but I’ve noticed that
he indulges quite a lot and often
starts at lunchtime. The problem is,
after he has had a few glasses of wine,
he begins to get a little forward with the
female servers. He kisses the hand of the
waitress, which I believe is his way of
showing appreciation.
I support his empathy for the hard
work these young women do. However,
in the latest episode, he grabbed a
waitress’s hand and held it for what
seemed to be an unnecessarily long
time. I thought the waitress should have
withdrawn her hand, and I asked her
what she was still doing there. I did not
make a big fuss, but she withdrew her
hand and left, visibly upset.
I realize that I was rude, but it seemed
like my husband was unaware of the
consequences of his actions. Since then,
I have avoided going back to that bar, but
I don’t know a permanent solution to this
kind of embarrassment.
Should I avoid going to a bar after
my husband has had one too many? That
means we cannot stay at a bar longer
than 45 minutes, because he drinks
quickly. He gets grumpy if I try to leave
too soon, because he always thinks he is
fine. It also means I have to cut short my
own enjoyment.
We have been lucky that we’ve
avoided any incidents with law
enforcement personnel. I need your
counsel. — Uncertain and Afraid
Dear Uncertain: Please don’t blame
the waitresses for your husband’s
inappropriate behavior. He is drinking
too much to control his flirting and keep
it within acceptable bounds. If he starts
at lunch, it sounds as if he is developing
a serious drinking problem. Don’t be
naive about it. Contact Al-Anon (alanon.alateen.org)
for more information.
Dear Annie: My husband and I have
been married for 30 years. My son (his
stepson) is in his 40s and is married with
two young sons.
The problem is, my husband refuses
to treat the grandchildren as his own.
My
Answer
By Dr. Billy
Graham
THINK SERIOUSLY
BEFORE LEAVING
YOUR CHURCH FOR
ANOTHER
Q: How can I know if
it’s time for me to change
churches? The one I’ve
been going to for the last
few years doesn’t have any
community service projects
that I can get involved in,
which is something I’d
really like to do now that
I’m retired. —Mrs. L.F.
A: I’m grateful you
want to help others in
your community; far too
many people assume their
usefulness is over once they
retire. But it doesn’t need to
be that way; some of God’s
choicest servants made
Annie’s
Mailbox
their greatest impact
later in life. Moses (for
example) was 80 when
God called him to lead
the Israelites out of
Egypt.
I don’t know
whether or not you
should seek another
church home -- but God
does, and I urge you to
pray about this decision
and seek His will. As you
consider this, however, I
hope you’ll keep two things
in mind. First, no church is
perfect. Some people seem
to spend their lives looking
for one that is — but they
never find it, because it
doesn’t exist this side of
heaven!
Second, don’t overlook
the good points in your
present church. Is the Bible
honored as God’s Word,
and is it preached and
taught? Does your church
provide other opportunities
for your spiritual growth?
In other words, don’t
It is awkward
when I spend time
with them and
my husband stays
home. But it also
makes my son feel
terrible, and it breaks
my heart. I’ve tried everything to get my
husband to feel differently, but he won’t
budge. It’s starting to affect our marriage,
as we spend less time together with the
family.
I love my husband, but I’m not going
to sacrifice my relationship with my son
and his family. Any advice? — Sad Mom
Dear Sad: We assume your husband
helped raise your son. We are amazed
and disappointed that he doesn’t
feel close enough to him to treat the
grandchildren with more affection. Has
your husband always been distant from
your son? If it’s a relatively new reaction,
suggest that he get a thorough physical
from his doctor. Behavioral changes can
indicate medical problems. Otherwise,
spend as much time with your son and
his family as you wish. Do not make
excuses for your husband. He is what he
is, take it or leave it.
Dear Annie: This is in response to
“No Good Solution for this Arithmetic
Problem,” who asked how to divide the
costs for a vacation rental between three
families of differing sizes coming from
different locations.
I would divide half of the cost
in thirds, and the other half would
be divided according to the number
attending. This is both a compromise
and a reflection of the fact that part of the
costs are per family and some of the costs
are per person. -- Simi Valley, Calif.
focus only on the church’s
shortcomings, but also on
its strengths. And are you
taking advantage of them?
In addition, don’t
overlook the possibility
that God may want to use
you to start a community
service project of some
type in your present church.
It not only could fulfill
your desires, but also help
others to put their faith into
action. The Bible says, “If
you really keep the royal
law found in Scripture,
‘Love your neighbor as
yourself,’ you are doing
right” (James 2:8).
