10th annual AP&EA regional grower
educational seminars held in October
Alabama Poultry & Egg Association's
10th annual Grower Educational Seminars
were held in north and south Alabama in
October.
"Engineering, management, economics
and maintenance: Issues of poultry houses in
winter" was the subject for the seminars.
Speakers were Jim Donald, Extension engineer;
Gene Simpson, Extension economist;
and Jess Campbell. poultry housing technician,
all from Auburn University.
Lunch or dinner was served at all meetings
to growers and their families. After the meal
the speakers began informing growers about
wintertime ventilation of poultry houses.
Donald spoke to growers about what wintertime
ventilation will accomplish on a poultry
farm and the importance of taking the
effort to make sure poultry houses are ready
for the cold-weather season to protect the
birds. Simpson explained and clarified the
economics of energy and management associated
with preparing houses for winter. Lastly,
Campbell went through a checklist that will
help growers keep equipment in their houses
maintained through the winter months.
James McAfee, Alabama Department of
Environmental Management, reviewed the
proposed changes in the national CAFO regulation
by EPA and discussed the possible
effects on Alabama's CAFO rule.
Before introducing the speakers, AP&EA
Executive Director Johnny Adams welcomed
everyone to each meeting and gave updates on
the Association and its membership. AP&EA
staff Wanda Linker and Wes Cumbie helped
pass out door prizes between speakers.
These seminars are provided to growers to
help improve their bottom line and to promote
environmental stewardship through good
management practices. AP&EA brings poultry
professionals and researchers to grower
communities for face-to-face communication
of timely information relating to the industry.
