approach to dentistry

dentistry treats them
with pharmaceuticals,
prescribes a therapist,
or uses desensitization
by exposing them to the
dentist a little bit at a
time. Dr. Doi is open
to patients using other
forms of treatment
such as aromatherapy,
music therapy, color
therapy glasses, or
relaxation methods he has
developed through the
study of hypnosis.
“Lots of people are
apprehensive when they
hear the word ‘dentist.’
I have developed a style
for making these patients
feel comfortable without
using lots of drugs,” Doi
explained.

A true Waimea son, Dr.
Doi has served the dental
needs of North Hawaii for
over 30 years. He spent
his childhood years in
Kawaihae, working at his
grandparents’ farm and
store, T. Doi and Sons,
and he graduated from
high school in Waimea.
Despite his local roots,
Dr. Doi’s practice draws
patients from all over
the Big Island and state.
Doi said, “I’m not just a
mechanic to fix teeth,
because I can do that, but
I also talk to my patients
and make connections.
That’s really what makes
people willing to fly in or
drive long distances to
come to my practice.”
For Dr. Doi, holisticminded
means keeping up
with new developments,
so he can offer his
patients the most
sophisticated and up –todate
treatment options.
One modern, advanced
treatment considered
holistic is electronic xrays
that expose patients
to less radiation, resulting
in less chemicals in the
office and environment.
Dr. Doi recently added
a high-tech instrument, a
bioluminescence testing
device. The company
that supplies the product
reports that Dr. Doi’s
office is the only one
on the Big Island that
currently uses it. It
analyzes a patient’s
mouth for excessive
acid-producing bacteria,
a primary factor for
tooth decay. Dr. Doi
uses different products,
some organic, to cause a
shift to the more-desired
alkaline-producing
bacteria. The device
enables him to verify that
the shift has taken place.
Membership in
dental organizations
and attendance at
conferences allows Dr. Doi
to remain current with
the findings of scientists
and industry leaders. In
the state of Hawaii, he is
the only active member
of the Holistic Dental
Association and the only
Hawaii Associate Member
of the International
Academy of Oral Medicine
and Toxicology. Locally,
he serves on the board of
the Traditional Chinese
Medical College of
Hawaii.
