from a Midwest Terra Cotta building

a wood grill design inside Louis 

Sullivan’s National Farmer’s Bank of 

Owatonna, Minnesota–one of the

Alice Millard House of 1923 (left), 

also known as “La Miniatura,” 

inspired the tile shown above. The 

residence in Pasadena, California 

was unlike any in the world at the 

time. Wright’s unique construction 

method, in which decorative blocks 

of concrete were woven together with 

reinforcing steel rods, came to be 

known as the Textile Block System.

precision geometry in graphic design. 

March Balloons is adapted from a 

drawing which Mr. Wright submitted 

to Liberty magazine as one of 12 

cover designs in 1927. Today, it is 

considered the most popular of all 

the (unpublished) Liberty covers 

and an outstanding example of 

asymmetrical composition.

Library Fireplace Murals: a 6 foot tall 

custom tube-lined Pine Landscape 

mural is the focal point of this reading 

room in the Delta Township Library in 

Lansing, Michigan. 


Hospital “Gifts of Art” Tile Quilt (opposite): 

16 distinctive way-finding tile quilts deck the 

walls of the elevator lobbies in the University 

of Michigan’s Taubman Center. This one 

features Motawi polychrome botanicals 

including Amaryllis, Sunflower, Carnation 

and Calla Lily. The predominant field tile 

glaze is 5251 Pale Green. 5098 Green 6x6s 

form the border and 5046 Lime and 5002 Lee 

Green are sprinkled throughout as accents.


“We’d like to think that these 

works of tile art will be around 

100 years from now,” says 

Project Designer Colleen 

Crawley. “We relish the idea 

of access to our art in a public 

venue, where it will be related 

to or connected with every day.”

Peacock Mural (left): designed by Nawal Motawi and completed 

in July 2002. The inspiration comes from the rich history of the 

peacock used in Art Nouveau architecture, textiles and design. 

Boy Reading Mural (above): donated by a Motawi enthusiast, 

this enchanting Boy Reading and his storybook characters can be 

found in a reading corner of the Pittsfield Library, a branch of 

the Ann Arbor District Library. 

University Frieze (opposite): standing 30 inches in height, this 

custom tube-lined frieze graces the entry hall of Bass Library on 

the campus of Yale University.
