A sliced Carrot looks like
the human eye. The
pupil, iris and radiating
lines look just like the
human eye... and YES,
science now shows
carrots greatly enhance
blood flow to and
A Tomato has four
chambers and is red. The
heart has four chambers
and is red. All of the research
shows tomatoes are
loaded with lycopine and
are indeed pure heart and
blood food..
Grapes hang in a cluster that
has the shape of the heart. Each
grape looks like a blood cell and
all of the research today shows
grapes are also profound heart
and blood vitalizing food.
A Walnut looks like a
little brain, a left and right
hemisphere, upper cerebrums
and lower cerebellums.
Even the wrinkles or
folds on the nut are just like
the neo-cortex. We now
know walnuts help develop
more than three (3) dozen
neuron transmitters for
brain function.
Kidney Beans actually heal
and help maintain kidney function
and yes, they look exactly
like the human kidneys.
Submitted by: Laura Moore
Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many
more look just like bones. These foods
specifically target bone strength. Bones
are 23% sodium. If you don't have
enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls
it from the bones, thus making them
weak. These foods replenish the skeletal
needs of the body.
Avocadoes, Eggplant and Pears
target the health and function of the
womb and cervix of the female - they
look just like these organs. Today's
research shows that when a woman
eats one avocado a week, it balances
hormones, sheds unwanted birth
weight, and prevents cervical cancers.
And how profound is this? It takes
exactly nine (9) months to grow an
avocado from blossom to ripened
fruit.
Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos
when they grow. Figs increase the
mobility of male sperm and increase
the numbers of sperm as well to overcome
male sterility.
Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas
and actual balance the glycemic index of
diabetics.
Olives assist the health and function
of the ovaries.
Oranges, Grapefruits, and other
Citrus fruits look just like the mammary
glands of the female and actually
assist the health of the breasts
and the movement of lymph in and
out of the breasts.
Onions look like the body's cells.
Today's research shows onions help
clear waste materials from all of the
body cells. They even produce tears
which wash the epithelial layers of
the eyes. A working companion,
Garlic, also helps eliminate waste
materials and dangerous free radicals
from the body.

Maui’s sun is a slow burn but could be deadly
without protection. Especially in construction, you
are in constant exposure under the sun. Paradise
offers an abundance of sun. Every day is summer.
Construction workers do not realize how vulner- Tina Ili
able they are when it comes to skin cancer. Skin cancer
is on the rise and the industry’s lack of awareness about this deadly
disease heightens the problem. The rate of all skin cancer incidents in
United States has surged an alarming 26% from 1993 to 2003,
according to the American Cancer Society. The odds of contracting the
illness are far worse for pool builders, subcontractors, plasterers,
roofing, fencing and service technicians. They spend most of the workdays
outdoors. The statistics are staggering. More than 1.5 million new
cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. For
men over 50, it’s the No.1 disease, ahead of prostate, colon and lung
cancer, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation.
SKIN CANCER 101
Skin cancer that spreads or metastasizes results in poor outcomes.
Some cancers are classified as non-melanoma. They usually can occur
in squamous cells or basal, which are located at the base of the outer
layer of skin. It generally appears on sun-exposed areas of the body,
such as the top of your skull, face, neck & ears. It can be slow or fast
growing and generally don’t spread to other parts of the body. But
Melanoma comprises the smallest percentage of skin cancer and the
the most deadly form of the disease. It begins in cells known as melanin.
It provides the pigmentation and protects the deeper layers of skin
from harmful ultraviolet rays. People who develop melanoma can remember
having severe sunburn in some point in their life. It is very disturbing
when many workers are in their early to mid-20s & believe
they’re invincible and will live forever! Filipinos, Blacks and Latinos were
once thought to be relatively impervious to skin cancer. Due to the fact
that their skin pigmentation proved protected from the sun’s harmful
rays. However, a University of Miami study completed the study early in
2006 shows that blacks are more than 3 times as likely as whites to be
diagnosed with melanoma. Plus, Latinos-a huge labor group within the
pool and spa industry, are nearly twice as likely. Perhaps the reason
most people have the false perception that people of color can’t get skin
cancer is because of their pigmentation. Thus, when it is noticed & diagnosed,
it’s already spread through out the body. It is not too late to practice
prevention. Be sure to have a skin test and have a complete check
up before starting any construction job.
PREVENTION 101
• Always use Sea & Ski with SPF 50- 50 UVA & UVB protection. For
face, arms, and legs.
• Dress appropriately. Protect your legs and arms. Use long sleeves
and pants.
• Use construction boots to protect your feet.
• Be sure you use your hard hat and construction glasses.
• If hard hat is not applicable, use any hat to protect your face.
• Construction sun glasses with UV might be necessary to protect
your eyes from the sun.
• Remember to drink a lot of water.
Maui’s sun is beautiful and should be respected. It is very important to
practice prevention. If you are not in construction you still need to
practice prevention. Check with your physician and ask for his/her
recommendation.
Enjoy Maui but respect the beauty and the land. Malama aina (caring for
the land) is important to us and please “Kokua” That means to please
understand and please cooperate.
Mahalo!
Depth can change abruptly, a
dangerous change of water
from wading depth to over
your head. Beware of strong
currents and avoid ledges and
drop off.
Don’t’ panic! Call for help
and wave one or both hands
in the air. Scream and call for
help. Swimming across the
current to break free from the
current not against it!
Foot protection is advised.
Coral reefs have sharp edges.
and most Hawaiian beaches
have sharp coral reefs close to
the shore line. Use caution
when swimming.
Opposing winds and water
currents combine to push the
Man-O-War to the beaches.
The stings can be painful and
may be life threatening.
Lots of rocks are covered by
a thick algae. It is very
slippery so use extreme
caution when walking along
these areas. A severe injury
can occur.
Waves can break directly
on the shore. Small waves
can be dangerous too,
especially when surf is up.
Waves are very unpredictable
and can cause serious
injuries.
Be cautious when walking
along rocky coastlines
even when you
think the ocean appears
calm. Large swells can
rise quickly without
warning.
It is very important that all of us heed the
warning signs. It is posted for a
reason. To Save Your Life.
Enjoy Maui but respect our ocean.

HAWAIIAN FLAG
When I moved to Hawaii eight
years ago, the first thing that I
noticed was the Hawaiian flag.
I was wondering why Hawaii
has a British flag? I am sure
many of you still wonder about
that? So here is the information
that you have been wondering
about for a long time.
Hawaiian Flag History:
The flag was adopted for state
use in 1959, when Hawaii
became a state of the USA.
Hawaii is the 50th state of the
union, gaining statehood on
Aug. 21, 1959. The flag is
based on a design which was
first adopted by the Kingdom of
Hawaii in 1816. It was
originally adopted by Hawaii on
May 20, 1845. The current flag
design dates from Apr. 8, 1896.
The flag of Hawaii consists of
eight alternating equal sized
horizontal stripes of white, red
and blue. In the top left quarter
is the British Union Jack flag.
Hawaiian Flag Meaning:
The eight alternating stripes
represent the eight main islands
of Hawaii: Hawaii, Maui, Oahu,
Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau
and Kahoolawe. The Union
Jack represents Hawaii's
historical ties to Britain.
By Ophelia Hodgson
Yes! Let the energy flow when hitting the brick wall. A full force of
positive energy that is. It is just like the full force of a waterfall!
Sometimes when everything in life seems to be going your way and
suddenly you run into a brick wall, you tell yourself, “Ouch, where
did that wall come from?” Especially in this gloomy economic
downturn and all the dirty politics! Let’s get away from them all but
help ourselves and especially our families. You are so sure and so
confident that all your plans will come out perfect and there is no
margin for error… but when the plans and dreams did not come out
perfectly or did not materialize, you’ve hit the wall. This is a scary
time to all of us and throughout the world. Lets pull together.
Together we stand tall, divided we fall.
When you feel trapped and feel there is no way out, then it is time to
reach out to your higher power. Reach out to our Almighty God. It is
also time to reach out to your families & friends. To reach out to
organizations that can help you to a better positive living. My
friends, there is always a way out. Whatever is going on in your life
right now that is so negative; this will pass. Nothing on this earth is
infinite. Only our Almighty God is infinite! All living things are finite.
Anything that occupies space and has mass is finite! Any problem
is finite. Even our lousy economy. It will pass.
I will try to attempt to ease some pains and guide you with some
pointers that might help ease stress and help you to understand that
whatever you are going through in your life now, will eventually
pass. I am not a psychiatrist or have all the knowledge of human
behavior, but I have the sense of practicality and experience. The
preparations of combating such forces must be acquired through
discipline, practice and understanding.
Hitting the wall in some sense is logical and part of the scheme of
life. The entire panoramic picture of our life is being observed and
counted. Life is continuously a circle. Have you ever wondered why
you are so happy out of your mind and then come the cloud of
despair and then happiness comes? Why? There are no answers; it is
just the way of life. It is just what it is. We are here in this plane of
existence to learn a lesson, lessons that we need to learn over and
over again until we have learned. Only God knows how our life
ends.
ENDURANCE: Not quitting whenever you have a problem and the
endurance to fight is what its all about. Hitting the wall will not be so
hard. Keep on going until you reach the saturation point of fulfillment
and satisfaction is attained. But of course, your goal is to win.
Rejection is part of everyone’s life. It is difficult to face any rejection
but if you have the skills, understanding and condition to combat
such negative forces then such experience will be much easier. Both
the physical and the spiritual when attacked will reach a breaking
point. But if you are always on your guard, then hitting the wall
will not be so painful. Have you ever thought that life without any
problems would be boring? Without challenges in life, boredom
ensues. At the same token, without spiritual guidance, life has no
meaning. The prize of winning is exciting and makes our body
tingle and feel alive. All of us need drama in our life. By doing so,
it gets our blood circulating. In a sense it wakes up your whole
being. Thank God that you are alive!
DISCIPLINE: Being in control is part of wellness. You know your
goals and the race is on. On the road of recovery, every one of us
will encounter pot holes in the road that can trip us up. It will slow
us down, or trip us to reach our goals. People who can bounce back
and start all over again and again are remarkable beings. They have
the ability to change and re-program the whole scheme of life.
These are the friends you want in your life.
HUMAN WILLPOWER: Self-control is just controlling oneself.
Will power is listening to your heart and doing what is smart.
Personal experience, human effort, self-assertion, positive thinking,
and will power are an image of a human being pure in mind and
soul. Human willpower is a strong trait to acknowledge. Practice
towards attaining such goals is a powerful force at play.
SET ATTAINABLE GOALS: With today’s generation, we
manage to over work, over sex, over drugs, etc. We set goals and
expectations so high and when it fails, we hit the wall. Be
reasonable in your goals and do not wait until New Year eve. New
Year’s resolutions are dangerous if not played out right. It is a trap.
We often fall into the trap of setting goals without objectives. We
find ourselves setting goals without the intention of attainment.
Because some of us realize from the beginning that it is an
impossible goal, we set ourselves up for failure.
“Woe to the man who has to learn his principles in a time of
crisis” (Ray Stedman). He said it quite well and I for one believe it.
Crisis comes in different forms. Crisis in life, crisis in heart, and
crisis in our soul. When crisis comes to someone without coping
skills, such a crisis may be overpowering. Hitting the wall is much
more painful.
Even with all this information or guidelines, it is up to you to
follow and practice ways to better yourself. You have the power
to change so you won’t find yourself hitting the brick wall hard
and painful! ” Check with a professional psychiatrist if stress is
acute.
Reach out and this will pass!

Top 10 Ways To Go Green!
By Kyle Buchholz
1. When buying new appliances look for the
ENERGY STAR logo. Company offers rebates
for energy conservation.
2. Plant trees to provide shade. Plant grass to
absorb water & reduce runoff. Start your own
compost to reduce fertilizer & chemical use. Start
your own garden, a great way to go green.
3. Cut down your usage of electricity. Go solar!
Call Alternate Energy pg. 5. For your hot water
& electric. Turn off the lights & unplug appliances
when not in use. Run fans, not AC.
4. Maintain malfunctioning vehicles. This produces up to 10 times
more emission. Keep track of your fuel economy. Inflates your tires
regularly; low tires decrease gas mileage. Use the natural air
conditioner. Roll down your windows.
5. Avoid paints with lead & filled with volatile organic compounds
(VOC) that give off toxic fumes.
6. Buy local food. This will help your local economy. Go to farmers
stands. Find a farmers’ market close to you at www.hfbf.org.
7. Conserve water at all times. Especially at home. Be sure to take
care of your leaky faucets. Call our local Dept. of Water Supply for
advice ( 808-244-8550).
8. Recycle, Re-use, & Repair. Waste Not! If a person will only drink
from a re-usable cup once a day greenhouse gases will cut by almost
50,000 pounds!
9. Eat Your Veggies - Did you know that every calorie of meat eaten
requires at least 10 calories of fossil fuel to reach the table. Livestock
uses 70% of all agriculture land, and consumes 1/2 of all water
usage.
10. Invest on synthetic grass for your lawn. It is eco friendly and no
watering. Call Synlawn * 808-879-5111. Check page 6.
Why use Chlorine when Chlorine is a toxic gas
that irritates the respiratory system?
how the system works
CL Free Digital Water Systems has two
components inside its Flow Cell.
First, CL Free Digital Water Systems has
developed a process that actually splits the
water molecule into OXYGEN (OH) and
HYDROGEN. This process is called Oxidation.
This OXYGEN takes the place of Chlorine as the
sanitizer. Oxidation is achieved by water
passing through the CL Free Flow Cell while a
very low volt D/C electrical current is sent to
the coated TITANIUM/PLATINUM plates in the
chamber.
“CL Free Chamber”
While in this mode, a proprietary process of
electrolysis causes the electro-physical separation
of water molecule. This separation forms free
oxygen atoms and hydroxyl (OH).
This process creates a combination of the most
powerful oxidizers available for water disinfection.
These oxidizers, the oxygen atoms and hydroxyl
ions, are responsible for eliminating body oils, sun
tan lotions and as well as the dead organic
matter.
The second part of the process is Copper Ionization.
After the water molecule is split it then passes over
100% Copper plates that are charged with the same
low volt D.C. current. While in this mode, Copper
ions are released. Copper ionization is the most
effective form of algae and fungal control available
on the market today. The copper content is kept at
a very low .5 to .7 parts per million. This amount of
copper is less than 25% of the E.P.A. required intake
recommended daily. You could actually drink up to
two gallons of your pool water every day and you
would have no more Copper intake that a common
multi-vitamin. The CL Free system produces
oxidizers, measured in grams per minute. Additionally,
each CL Free oxidizer is more powerful than
sodium hypochlorite, the dominant form of Chlorine.

Peel a banana from the bottom and you won't
have to pick the little 'stringy things' off it.
That's how the primates do it. Take your
bananas apart when you get home from the
store. If you leave them connected at the
stem, they ripen faster. To stop a mosquito
bite from itching, rub the inside of the
peeling onto the itchy part.
Peppers with 3 bumps on the bottom are sweeter and
better for eating. Peppers with 4 bumps on the
bottom are firmer and better for cooking.
Add garlic immediately to a recipe if you want a
light taste of garlic and at the end of the recipe if
your want a stronger taste of garlic.
Store your opened chunks of cheese in
aluminum foil. It will stay fresh much longer
and will not mold!
Easy Deviled Eggs. Put cooked egg yolks
in a zip lock bag. Seal; mash till they are
all broken up. Add remainder of ingredients,
reseal, keep mashing it up mixing
thoroughly, cut the tip of the baggy;
squeeze mixture into egg. Just throw bag
away when done - easy clean up.
To really make scrambled eggs or
omelets rich add a couple
of spoonfuls of sour cream, cream
cheese, or heavy cream; then beat
them.
Reheat Pizza . Heat leftover pizza in a
nonstick skillet on top of the stove; set
heat to med-low and heat till warm. This
keeps the crust crispy. No soggy micro
pizza. I saw this on the food channel and
it really works.
Leftover snickers bars from
Halloween make a delicious
dessert. Simply chop them with
the food chopper. Peel, core and
slice a few apples. Place them in
a baking dish and sprinkle the
chopped candy bars over the
apples. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes!!!
Serve alone or with
vanilla ice cream. Yummm!
Reheating refrigerated bread:
To warm biscuits, pancakes, or muffins that were
refrigerated, place them in a microwave next to a cup
of water. The increased moisture will keep the food
moist and help it reheat faster.
Expanding Frosting:
When you buy a container of cake frosting from the
store, whip it with your mixer for a few minutes. You
can double it in size and get to frost more cake/
cupcakes with the same amount. You also eat less sugar
and calories per serving.
Measuring Cups :
Before you pour sticky substances into a measuring cup,
fill with hot water. Dump out the hot water, but don't dry
cup. Next, add your ingredient (peanut butter, honey, etc.)
and watch how easily it comes right out.
No More Mosquitoes :
Place a dryer sheet in your pocket. It will keep the
mosquitoes away.
Put small piles of cornmeal where you see ants. They eat it,
take it home, can’t digest it so it kills them. It may take a
week or so, specially if it rains, but it works & don’t have
the worry about pets or small children being harmed!
Goodbye Fruit Flies :
To get rid of pesky fruit flies, take a small glass, fill it
1/2 with Apple Cider Vinegar and 2 drops of dish
washing liquid; mix well. You will find those flies
drawn to the cup and gone forever!
Foggy Windshield?
Hate foggy windshields? Buy a chalkboard
eraser and keep it in the glove box of your car
When the windows fog, rub with the eraser!
Works better than a cloth!
Newspaper weeds away :
Start putting torn newspaper in your plants, work the
nutrients in your soil. Wet newspapers, put layers
around the plants, overlapping as you go; cover with
mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through
some gardening plastic; they will not get through wet
newspapers.
Reopening envelope :
If you seal an envelope and then realize you forgot to
include something inside, just place your sealed
envelope in the freezer for an hour or two. Viola! It
unseals easily.
By Barry Hodgson
Many construction companies all over the world
have a sales team. In many cases, there is always
a “star.” But, sometimes this “star,” who may be
bringing in as much business as the rest of the
sales team, may have an attitude. This salesperson
may be bringing in a negative attitude to the
office and does not follow procedures or company policies. How
does the manager or owner deal with the “prima donna,” especially
if they are worried about the “star” leaving the company if
confronted by this behavior?
It has been said that if you have a company that is over dependant
on any one person, fire them immediately. An indispensable
employee needs to be dealt with because this dependency in
dangerous. Businesses can fail when this employee leaves the
company or passes away.
If management tolerates this type of behavior, they are, in essence,
endorsing it. Other employees see this and think that your rules are
irrelevant and your authority is meaningless. Sometimes, the
“prima donna” will try and leverage this dependence into
immunity from company procedures or company policies. By
allowing this behavior to persist only undermines your leadership
within the company.
In order to fix the problem, you will need to eliminate the
dependency. Sales duties need to be spread around to others.
Assign new territories and train new recruits. Establish a set of
standards that will create the type of working environment you
want for your company. Include behavior policies. By not
asserting your authority is a major threat to your business and your
leadership. This situation will not heal itself. Have a meeting with
the “prima donna.” Be prepared and assert control from the
beginning. Have a replacement strategy in case this disruptive
worker threatens to leave the company. Be clear about your
policies and company procedures. Set goals for compliance and
stick to them.
By spreading knowledge and skills among other employees, you
will eliminate overdependence in your business. The business
needs to depend upon systems, rather than people, to get results.
If you want to feel better about yourself and improve your
business, deal with this over dependency immediately. The effect
the “prima donna” may have on your business may be subtle and
easy to dismiss. Ignoring this problem is very dangerous. Be
assertive, take control, and help ensure the success of your
business!
An Engineer and a
Construction Worker
are sitting next to each other on a long flight
across country.
The Engineer leans over to the Construction
Worker and asks if he would like to play a fun
game. The Construction Worker just wants to take
a nap, so he politely declines and rolls over to the
window to catch a few winks.
The Engineer persists and states that the game is
real easy and a lot of fun. He explains "I ask you a
question, and if you don't know the answer, you
pay me $5. Then you ask me a question, and if I
don't know the answer, I'll pay you $5."
Again, the Construction Worker politely declines
and tries to get to sleep.
The Engineer, now somewhat agitated, says, "OK,
if you don't know the answer you pay me $5, and
if I don't know the answer, I'll pay you $50!" This
catches the Construction Worker's attention, and
he sees no end to this idiotic torment unless he
plays, so he agrees to the game.
The Engineer asks the first question. "What's the
distance from the earth to the moon?" The
Construction Worker doesn't say a word, but
reaches into his wallet, pulls out a five-dollar bill
and hands it to the Engineer.
Now, it's the Construction Worker's turn. He asks
the Engineer "What goes up a hill with three legs,
and comes down on four?"
The Engineer looks up at him with a puzzled look.
He takes out his laptop computer and searches all
of his references. He taps into the Air phone with
his modem and searches the net and the Library of
Congress. Frustrated, he sends e-mail to his co-
workers -- all to no avail.
After about an hour, he wakes the Construction
Worker and hands him $50. The Construction
Worker politely takes the $50 and turns away to
try to get back to sleep.
The Engineer, more than a little miffed, shakes the
Construction Worker and asks, "Well, so what's
the answer?"
Without a word, the Construction Worker reaches
into his wallet, hands the Engineer $5, and turns
away to get back to sleep.
Within the last 6 to 12 months, Maui has seen an
upswing in the cost of oil that has affected the way we
live. With gas prices rising, citizens are looking for
ways to offset their expenditures with transportation.
People have gotten rid of gas guzzlers and have
purchased more economy cars, motor cycles and even
bicycles to help ease the slow burn in their pocketbooks
and wallets. The popularity
of public transportation on
Maui has grown and we
wanted to let you know what
and how they are doing.
Hammer Magazine felt that
by speaking with the
Director of Transportation,
Don Medeiros, we could get
a better feel for how oil has
affected public transportation
and their ridership.
Barry Hodgson, Don Medeiros, Ophelia Hodgson, Evelyna Banner
With the help of Mayor
Charmaine Tavares, Maui Bus has been successful in
transforming the one rider/per car into a public transportation
user. Maui Bus has seen an explosive growth of
68% in passenger boarding's totaling 1,450,660 for
fiscal year 2008. With on-time performance at 93.4%,
it’s no wonder that ridership is up. Maui Bus is
experiencing ridership as follows; a 64.4% increase of
fixed-route boarding's totaling 1,322,738; an 88.9 % of
commuter boarding's of 127,922; and, a daily passenger
average of 4,769 riders per day. Ridership grew because
public transportation was made more convenient by
making the Queen Kaahumanu Shopping Center the
main hub. The ridership is a x-section of students,
professionals, government employees and shoppers—
some with disabilities. Maui Bus offers senior discounts,
bicycle racks for those coming in from outlying areas to
commute within the area they were dropped, and
doubling wheel chair availability. Seat belts are
required and provided, and the buses meet ‘07 e.p.a.
standards of no smell or sight of smoke, clean burning
ultra low sulfur engine oil and diesel fuel and they have
the capability to clean themselves for a while.
Furthermore, Maui Bus is comfortable and air
conditioned. Riders are friendly and you will find
yourself striking up a conversation with a stranger. Maui
Bus is equipped with emergency gears and the drivers
have intense training in CPR and first aid. A couple of
seats in the front are reserved for seniors.
In the year 2010, the e.p.a. will
initiate new standards. The cost
of converting buses to biodiesel
is around $250,000 each—so
don’t look for that anytime soon.
Maui Bus has expanded its service
to Upcountry and Haiku
Islander routes. Both routes will
double in frequency from every
3 hours to every 1.5 hours. Also,
a new Lahaina route was started
with major stops in town. With
the help of Senator Dan Inouye,
Maui Bus now has 13 new highcapacity
low-floor transit buses to address the increase
in ridership. To build on this success, Mayor Tavares
has twisted some arms in Washington D.C. for funding
of these buses. Mayor Tavares said “The ultimate goal
will be the development and implementation of an
Energy Action Plan that will make Maui County a
vibrant model of a community powered by sustainable
energy solutions.”
To build on this success, Mayor Tavares has directed all
departments to develop plans for the conservation of
water, fuel and electricity. Maui Bus says that one person
riding equals one car off the road. With a conservative
daily average of over 4,000 passengers per day, and
an equally conservative 1 gallon of gasoline per person,
the Maui Bus saves over 4,000 gallons of gasoline on
Maui---every single day!
Maui is a microcosm of the State of Hawaii. Maui is
showing it’s leadership in conservation and the rest of
the State would do well to pay attention to what we are
doing and how we are progressing.
