September 2012
The 2012 QBS Retreat “Escape from Reality” truly lived up to its billing. Starting with a retreat blog executed by Jan Macy; Cat
Harris and Mary Carbajal were a dynamic duo and presented a retreat that will be remembered fondly and often.
Mary Bladen, my roomie, arrived at my home promptly at 7:30 a.m. Thursday morning. Both our husbands were scratching their
heads. “Looks like you’re leaving the country,” said my spouse Patrick Kennedy. Bob Bladen commented, “There is no way all that
stuff is fitting in Susan’s car.” Well all that stuff did fit in my trunk and back seat and Temecula does feel 180 degrees from Long
Beach. Plus, staying in a nunnery at Vina de Lestonnac always makes me smile deep inside. In seventh grade I really wanted to be
a nun, just like Sister Mary Lidwina, a Benedictine nun from New Jersey.
Immediately after finding our spaces in room #2, we went over to room #1 where the fun began. First up was a name tag area with
stickers for decoration. Also, there was a humongous basket filled with fat quarters and a jelly bean jar. To win these you just had to
write down your guess. Carol Garcia won the fat quarters and Sheryl Hunter won the jelly beans. Carole Jurado won a prize for
best name tag. Another fun challenge pitted the rooms against each other: whoever put together a quilt themed puzzle first, won.
Room one was the victor. There was a contest to make the best block made from a fabric pack. The winner, Sandy Carreon, made
a block with a huge hot air balloon, and won every one else’s blocks; which were wonderful.
Entertainment included being serenaded by the Ukulele Ladies, taught by Vicki Allred and also Joanie Wolf and Margot Taub.
They practiced and then performed before the Ice Cream Social in a sing-a-long led by Kayleen Leone. Also on the program that
evening was a hilarious barber shop trio, Kasey Egelus, Carole Jurado and Brandi Kelly-Contreras. They made their own costumes
and lip-synced to hilarious responses by the audience. The Swimettes, synchronized swim team, Christine Panos, Kasey
Egelus, Linda Fowler, Joanie Wolf, Paula Dudek, Vicki Allred, Brandi Kelly-Contreras, and Lori Davies were back this year with
more members. A fast, tension packed jellyroll race found Patti Paschall the winner for 2012.
The nicest quilt attendee of all was Brandi Kelly-Contreras, who accumulated the most bead necklaces for all her good deeds. Kay
Zelllmer was rewarded “handily” for her work at the retreat. (You’ll have to ask Kay about her prize). And Show and Tell was literally
a parade of amazing and beautiful quilts, table runners, purses, etc. The four days were over all too soon. Great memories preserved
by our talented photographer, Vicki Allred, will remind us of a lot of sharing, yummy snacks, talented members and time
spent with friends both new and old. Thank you, thank you, thank you; and major hugs to Mary Carbajal and Cat Harris for an action
packed and spectacular weekend.
QBS August meeting was moved to August 23 rd . And it didn’t seem to damper the enthusiasm nor hinder the special program by
Vicki Allred, Kayleen Leone, Joanie Wolf and Kathleen Lisenby. We had an old fashioned hoedown replete with a song by
Kayleen, accompanied by Vicki on ukulele; cowboy hats, kerchiefs, and a photo op location. There were four stations set up for technique
presentations by Ann Leibovitz and Pat Adair, who showed hand and machine appliqué. Karen Binkley who presented a
new ruler set that makes creating pinwheels a breeze and Robin Gallagher demonstrating how to make two of her clever patterns.
The evening went by so quickly. I hope we do it again. Well done, ladies.
School’s starting and so is the push to get our Opportunity Quilt for 2013 off the ground. Margie Oschwald, has organized, contributed
additional fabric, and cut and prepped the blocks which need to be pieced and appliquéd. Please contact me to volunteer to be
part of this communal and vital QBS fundraising endeavor. Every stitch you contribute will get us closer to our goal.
See you all in September.
Wrap-up -- Temecula Retreat 2012
Well retreat has come and gone and we hope that we helped you all “escape reality” for awhile. We
want to thank everyone who attended and everyone who contributed to this event – whether you were
a vendor who made a gift or donation or an attendee who just had a positive attitude and went with
the flow. We all came together to share our love for quilting and to have a relaxing and fun time and
make some new friends.
There were also several “retreat angels” who contributed to the success of this event:
Chris Panos led the “Swimmettes” through a very professional synchronized swimming routine Friday
night that amazed us all. Kudos to these performers – they get better every year (and the group gets
larger). And many thanks to Callaway Vineyards, who provided us with a case of wine to enjoy at our
wine event following the swim.
Randy Miller and Linda Fowler organized the “Jelly Roll Race” which produced about 20 quilt tops for
charitable purposes. There were a lot of participants and they were good sports to wear the “jelly roll
rag” strips on their heads! Patti Pascal won the race with a time of 37 minutes and change.
Brandi Kelly-Contreras, Carol Jurado and Kasey Egelus dressed up as “Ruby’s Girls” and entertained us
by lip-synching a couple of oldies (“Lollipop”, “Sugartime”) before serving us fabulous banana splits at
Saturday’s ice cream social. Too much fun.
Vicki Allred and Kayleen Leone led us in a ukulele sing-along while we enjoyed the desserts. Singing
those old songs mellowed everyone out and made for a nice, relaxing evening.
There was also the block contest, the gift (one yard of fabric) exchange, the puzzle contest, the treasure
hunt at Quilter’s Coop (who went far beyond our expectations and not only hid prizes throughout
the store but sent back a gift bag for all retreat attendees, whether they went to the treasure hunt or
not! Thank you Quilter’s Coop!) and the final Show n’ Tell on Sunday morning where we displayed our
work and awarded the prizes.
Lori Davies won the “Crowd Pleaser” award – a two-night stay at Inspirations quilting retreat in Big
Bear Lake – for her wonderful American flag quilt. Sandy Carreon won the block contest, with a beautifully
pieced hot-air balloon design. She not only won all the blocks but a gift basket from Calico House
too.
New this year was the “kindness beads” award… won by Brandi Kelly-Contreras. Everyone received a
pair of beads in their goodie bags. If someone did something kind for you, you could give her/him your
beads. Conversely, if someone did something not-so-nice, you could take their beads away! It was a
lot of fun watching the beads go back and forth and maybe made us all go out of our way to be a little
more helpful!
Carol Garcia won the “Guess How Many Fat Quarters” contest and received a $25.00 gift certificate to
the Fat Quarter Quilt Shop.com plus all of the fat quarters. And Kay Zellmer won an extra pair of hands
for next year (that’s all I’m sayin’). And those industrious girls in Room 1 won the puzzle contest, even
though they later admitted that their puzzle was way easier than Room 2’s. And Carol Jurado won the
“best-decorated nametag” prize… complete with a pipe cleaner “crown.”
Mary and I thank you all for attending and participating in the fun. And remember to thank and patronize
our donors. We’ll put up a complete listing soon.
See you all next year!

IMPORTANT PHOTO INFORMATION:
Quilters by the Sea uses a public storage site (Photobucket.com) for storing digital photographs from Show and Tell,
Retreats and other guild events. On this website we have photo albums arranged by year, starting with 2006 when our
account was established. Each year has a sub-album for each month and/or event.
Guild members may view our photos by logging into Photobucket as a guest. Once you are on the site, you can view pictures and
save copies to your computer if desired. Here’s how to log into our website.
HOW TO SIGN IN TO PHOTOBUCKET:
Go to www.photobucket.com
At top right corner you will see Sign-In. Click on this to go to the sign-in screen.
Enter the Username: qbsphotos (all lower case)
Enter the Password for guests: quilting (all lower case; the password is case sensitive)
This will open the QBSphoto’s Album home page. Some photos may be displayed on the screen from the most recent posting.
Once you are on the home page, you can go to the desired album for the year and month you want to view. To do this, you
may need to scroll down to see the bottom of your screen depending on your computer.
