Post Title: Voluntary Graduate Assistant Psychologist<br />

Directorate: Specialist Services.<br />

Team: L<strong>and</strong>sdown Eating Disorders Service<br />

at Farnham Hospital & Centre for Health<br />

Location: Trust-wide Eating Disorders Service<br />

bases include Farnham, Epsom <strong>and</strong> Chertsey.<br />

<strong>Job</strong> Purpose: To work as a fully integrated member of the multidisciplinary<br />

team in the Eating Disorders day- <strong>and</strong> outpatient<br />

services according to a plan agreed with the service<br />

team <strong>and</strong> supervising psychologist.<br />

Duties include supporting <strong>and</strong> enhancing the professional<br />

psychological care of clients using the service including<br />

assisting or providing psychological assessment <strong>and</strong><br />

psychological interventions under the clinical supervision of<br />

the qualified applied psychologist. Assist in clinically<br />

related administration, conduct of audits, collection of<br />

outcome statistics <strong>and</strong> other project work as appropriate<br />

<strong>and</strong> agreed with service teams <strong>and</strong> supervising<br />

psychologist.<br />

Due to the complex nature of the work, the person<br />

appointed is likely to have already gained some clinical<br />

experience.<br />

Hours: By agreement, with a minimum of 2 – 3 days a week.<br />

Start Date: October 2010<br />

Planned Duration: A minimum of 6 months<br />

Line Manager: Helen Noble (Interim Service Manager)<br />

Professional Lead: Dr. Alexia Fernholz (Consultant Clinical Psychologist)<br />

Supervised By: Dr. Alexia Fernholz (Consultant Clinical Psychologist)<br />

or any applied psychologist working for the specialist<br />

services.<br />

Key Relationships: Multi-disciplinary team staff, trust staff, clients, carers,<br />

relatives as well as both internal <strong>and</strong> external<br />

organisations.<br />

Principal Duties:<br />

Clinical:<br />

1. To undertake protocol-based psychological assessments of clients using<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard psychological tests, including st<strong>and</strong>ardised, self-report<br />

measures, rating scales, direct <strong>and</strong> indirect structured observations <strong>and</strong><br />

semi-structured interviews with clients, family members <strong>and</strong> others<br />

involved in the client’s care, under the supervision of the qualified<br />

professional psychologist.<br />

2. To assist in the formulation <strong>and</strong> delivery of care plans involving the<br />

psychological treatment <strong>and</strong>/or management of a client’s problems, under<br />

the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist.<br />

3. To assist in the co-ordination <strong>and</strong> running of therapeutic <strong>and</strong> psychoeducational<br />

groups for the Eating Disorders Service therapy programme.<br />

4. To work with other staff to assess clients, <strong>and</strong> to assist in reviewing their<br />

care in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews.<br />

5. To assist the qualified professional psychologist in the development of a<br />

psychologically-based framework of underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> care to the benefit<br />

of all clients in the Eating Disorders Service.<br />

6. To attend <strong>and</strong> contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings.<br />

Teaching, training <strong>and</strong> supervision:<br />

1. To receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional<br />

practice guidelines.<br />

2. To gain wider experience of professional psychology within the <strong>NHS</strong> over<br />

<strong>and</strong> above that provided within the principal service area where the post<br />

holder is employed.<br />

3. To develop skills <strong>and</strong> competencies that assist in the delivery of current<br />

duties.<br />

4. To contribute to the training <strong>and</strong> support of other staff in psychological<br />

care as required.<br />

Management, recruitment <strong>and</strong> service development:<br />

1. To assist in the design <strong>and</strong> implementation of service improvement<br />

projects within the designated service areas as required, under the<br />

leadership of the qualified professional psychologist.<br />

2. When required, to attend meetings in which service improvements or<br />

developments are planned <strong>and</strong> discussed.<br />

Research <strong>and</strong> service evaluation:<br />

1. To assist the qualified professional psychologist in the design <strong>and</strong><br />

implementation of audit <strong>and</strong> research projects.<br />

2. To undertake data collection, analysis, the production of reports <strong>and</strong><br />

summaries, using IT <strong>and</strong> statistical programmes, as required-based<br />

literature <strong>and</strong> research to assist professionally qualified psychologists with<br />

evidence-based practice in individual work <strong>and</strong> work with other team<br />

members.<br />

IT responsibilities:<br />

1. To use a variety of software including office software <strong>and</strong> statistical<br />

packages, for example Microsoft Office <strong>and</strong> SPSS, to produce reports <strong>and</strong><br />

presentations.<br />

2. To enter personally generated clinical data on Trust electronic systems<br />

e.g. EDS database, Trace or Rio.<br />

General Duties:<br />

1. To fully participate in the supervision arrangements.<br />

2. To undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the<br />

post <strong>and</strong> as agreed with line manager.<br />

3. To underst<strong>and</strong> the principles of confidentiality in the context of the team’s<br />

work <strong>and</strong> h<strong>and</strong>le all information appropriately.<br />

4. To contribute positively to the effectiveness <strong>and</strong> efficiency of the teams in<br />

which he/she works.<br />

5. To contribute to a healthy <strong>and</strong> safe working environment by adhering to<br />

health <strong>and</strong> safety regulations <strong>and</strong> Trust policies.<br />

6. To contribute to the prevention <strong>and</strong> control of health care associated<br />

infection by adhering to Trust policies <strong>and</strong> guidelines.<br />

Volunteers must:<br />

1. Co-operate with the Trust <strong>and</strong> its officers in implementing the<br />

requirements of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974.<br />

2. Take reasonable care of their own health, safety <strong>and</strong> welfare.<br />

3. <strong>Ref</strong>rain from doing anything which may constitute an unacceptable health<br />

& safety risk to themselves or others.<br />

4. Report any defective equipment, unsafe situations or practices<br />

immediately to the responsible manager.<br />

5. Be willing to sign a Volunteering Agreement that incorporates these<br />

obligations.<br />

Additional requirements:<br />

1. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a special interest in Eating<br />

Disorders.<br />

2. The post holder will be required to request an Enhanced CRB disclosure<br />

<strong>and</strong> fill in an Occupational Health questionnaire.<br />

3. Two references will be required.<br />
