Job Description
Post Title: Voluntary Graduate Assistant Psychologist
Directorate: Specialist Services.
Team: Landsdown Eating Disorders Service
at Farnham Hospital & Centre for Health
Location: Trust-wide Eating Disorders Service
bases include Farnham, Epsom and Chertsey.
Job Purpose: To work as a fully integrated member of the multidisciplinary
team in the Eating Disorders day- and outpatient
services according to a plan agreed with the service
team and supervising psychologist.
Duties include supporting and enhancing the professional
psychological care of clients using the service including
assisting or providing psychological assessment and
psychological interventions under the clinical supervision of
the qualified applied psychologist. Assist in clinically
related administration, conduct of audits, collection of
outcome statistics and other project work as appropriate
and agreed with service teams and supervising
psychologist.
Due to the complex nature of the work, the person
appointed is likely to have already gained some clinical
experience.
Hours: By agreement, with a minimum of 2 – 3 days a week.
Start Date: October 2010
Planned Duration: A minimum of 6 months
Line Manager: Helen Noble (Interim Service Manager)
Professional Lead: Dr. Alexia Fernholz (Consultant Clinical Psychologist)
Supervised By: Dr. Alexia Fernholz (Consultant Clinical Psychologist)
or any applied psychologist working for the specialist
services.

Key Relationships: Multi-disciplinary team staff, trust staff, clients, carers,
relatives as well as both internal and external
organisations.
Principal Duties:
Clinical:
1. To undertake protocol-based psychological assessments of clients using
standard psychological tests, including standardised, self-report
measures, rating scales, direct and indirect structured observations and
semi-structured interviews with clients, family members and others
involved in the client’s care, under the supervision of the qualified
professional psychologist.
2. To assist in the formulation and delivery of care plans involving the
psychological treatment and/or management of a client’s problems, under
the supervision of a qualified professional psychologist.
3. To assist in the co-ordination and running of therapeutic and psychoeducational
groups for the Eating Disorders Service therapy programme.
4. To work with other staff to assess clients, and to assist in reviewing their
care in preparation for multi-disciplinary reviews.
5. To assist the qualified professional psychologist in the development of a
psychologically-based framework of understanding and care to the benefit
of all clients in the Eating Disorders Service.
6. To attend and contribute to appropriate multi-disciplinary meetings.
Teaching, training and supervision:
1. To receive regular clinical supervision in accordance with professional
practice guidelines.
2. To gain wider experience of professional psychology within the NHS over
and above that provided within the principal service area where the post
holder is employed.
3. To develop skills and competencies that assist in the delivery of current
duties.
4. To contribute to the training and support of other staff in psychological
care as required.

Management, recruitment and service development:
1. To assist in the design and implementation of service improvement
projects within the designated service areas as required, under the
leadership of the qualified professional psychologist.
2. When required, to attend meetings in which service improvements or
developments are planned and discussed.
Research and service evaluation:
1. To assist the qualified professional psychologist in the design and
implementation of audit and research projects.
2. To undertake data collection, analysis, the production of reports and
summaries, using IT and statistical programmes, as required-based
literature and research to assist professionally qualified psychologists with
evidence-based practice in individual work and work with other team
members.
IT responsibilities:
1. To use a variety of software including office software and statistical
packages, for example Microsoft Office and SPSS, to produce reports and
presentations.
2. To enter personally generated clinical data on Trust electronic systems
e.g. EDS database, Trace or Rio.
General Duties:
1. To fully participate in the supervision arrangements.
2. To undertake training as necessary in line with the development of the
post and as agreed with line manager.
3. To understand the principles of confidentiality in the context of the team’s
work and handle all information appropriately.
4. To contribute positively to the effectiveness and efficiency of the teams in
which he/she works.
5. To contribute to a healthy and safe working environment by adhering to
health and safety regulations and Trust policies.
6. To contribute to the prevention and control of health care associated
infection by adhering to Trust policies and guidelines.

Volunteers must:
1. Co-operate with the Trust and its officers in implementing the
requirements of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974.
2. Take reasonable care of their own health, safety and welfare.
3. Refrain from doing anything which may constitute an unacceptable health
& safety risk to themselves or others.
4. Report any defective equipment, unsafe situations or practices
immediately to the responsible manager.
5. Be willing to sign a Volunteering Agreement that incorporates these
obligations.
Additional requirements:
1. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a special interest in Eating
Disorders.
2. The post holder will be required to request an Enhanced CRB disclosure
and fill in an Occupational Health questionnaire.
3. Two references will be required.
