THE SPIRIT of Christmas is<br />

is tbe air lending a benevolent aura<br />

to the community.<br />

The <strong>Canton</strong> Newcomers met<br />

Wednesday for their Christmas<br />

luncheon at tbe Roman Forum<br />

restaurant on Ford Road. For them,<br />

the happiest part of the occasion<br />

was presenting a check for $675 to<br />

the Hospice organization. They had<br />

raised the money at their annual<br />

pre-holiday auction, when tbey had<br />

auctioned off handmade items made<br />

by the club members.<br />

Brownies and Girl Scouts in Bird<br />

Elementary School cluster are<br />

doing their bit for others.<br />

Members of the three Brownie<br />

and three Junior troops at Bird<br />

chose the school clothing bank as a<br />

special Christmas project. Each girl<br />

earned the money to buy a pair of<br />

socks. Many of them earned tbe<br />

money by doing extra chores at<br />

home — not the usual make your<br />

bed and tidy up your room. They<br />

had to involve special effort.<br />

The Brownies and Scouts bought<br />

socks they would like to have for<br />

themselves. About 90 pairs of socks<br />

were turned ia at the Christmas<br />

party this week. The girls worked on<br />

crafts, sang Christmas carols and<br />

had refreshments. And the 90 pairs<br />

of new socks were on their way to<br />

the clothing bank at Central Middle<br />

School.<br />

ROTARIANS and Kiwanians<br />

are serving two-hour hitches as bellringers<br />

for the Salvatioa Army.<br />

Lisa Bargente, Kathleen Browne<br />

and Cathy O'Loughlin, all of<br />

Plymouth, will be participating in<br />

the Mercy School Christmas concert<br />

in Farmington Hills. The musical<br />

celebration of Christmas will be at 3<br />

p.m. Sunday at tbe school on 11 Mile<br />

in Farmington Hills. Tbe audience is<br />

THE PLYMOUTH<br />

Community Chorus will be caroling<br />

in Kellogg Park at 7:30 p.m.<br />

Thurday, Dec. 15, and everyone is<br />

invited to come.<br />

from the response to their<br />

Christmas concerts last weekend.<br />

The auditorium at Plymouth Salem<br />

High School was filled both<br />

Saturday and Sunday nights. (Tbe<br />

auditorium seats more than 1,100<br />

people.)<br />

They met at Jimmie's Joynt for<br />

an afterglow following the concert.<br />

And they'll the concert at their<br />

Christmas party. This time they'll<br />

be the audience as they watch a<br />

video-tape of their performance.<br />

THE BATTLE Creek<br />

Boychoir, the group that won a gold<br />

medal for performing excellence<br />

last February at the Great<br />

American Choral Festival in<br />

Plymouth, will present "A<br />

Christmas Festival" at 7:30 p.m.<br />

Saturday The concert will be in St.<br />

Andrew's Episcopal Church, 306 N.<br />

Division Street, AM Arbor.<br />

Admission will be $3 for adults and<br />

$2 for children at tbe door.<br />

Historical Museum has been the site<br />

of several weddings. The latest was<br />

last weekend when Sandra Reiman<br />

and Dennis Adkins of Romulus were<br />

married on the main floor of the<br />

museum. Judge Dunbar Davis<br />

Symphony presents 'The Nutcracker'<br />

The Plymouth Symphony Orchestra<br />

will present two performances of "The<br />

Nutcracker Ballet" Sunday at Plymouth<br />

Salem High School auditorium.<br />

Northern Ballet Theater of Livonia, under<br />

the direction of Michelle Wolfe,<br />

will accompany the orchestra.<br />

Tbe ballet will be presented at 2 and<br />

5 p.m.<br />

Northern Ballet Theater, which is in<br />

Its eighth year, provides an unusual<br />

repertoire of classical and contemporary<br />

ballets by masters of their crafts.<br />

The company also advanced newly discovered<br />

musical and choreographic<br />

THE COMPANY has been under the<br />

artistic direction of Michelle Wolfe<br />

since 1975. Wolfe, who also functions as<br />

resident choreographer, has studied<br />

and performed with dance companies<br />

such as the Joffrey Ballet, the Royal<br />

Winnipeg, and the Metropolitan Opera<br />

Ballet.<br />

Although "The Nutcracker" is one of<br />

Tchaikovsky's most popular non-symphonic<br />

orchestral works, the ballet was<br />

received with indifference at its first<br />

performance in St. Petersburg in 1892<br />

The ballet was presented periodically<br />

in abbreviated versions until 1954,<br />

when choreographer George Balanchine,<br />

with the New York City Ballet,<br />

presented a fresh interpretation.<br />

SINGLE CONCERT tickets for the<br />

ballet are J6 for adults and $3.50 for<br />

children, senior citizens and all students.<br />

No one will be admitted to either<br />

performance of the ballet without a<br />

ticket.<br />

Chorus announces Grimmer scholarship<br />

William Grimmer said it was the<br />

highlight of his life. The founder of the<br />

Plymouth Community Chorus was honored<br />

at the chorus' 10th anniversary<br />

Christmas concerts in Plymouth Salem<br />

High School auditorium<br />

Michael Gross presented a plaque to<br />

Grimmer at the Saturday night concert<br />

and Barbara Frank announced the new<br />

William Grimmer Scholarship Award<br />

Three music scholarships will be offered<br />

and awarded at the May 1984<br />

spring concert. And, because the chorus<br />

wanted both its sell-out audiences to<br />

share the joy of tbe event, tbey made<br />

the presentation and the announcement<br />

again on Sunday night.<br />

Head usher Dave Keck said that the<br />

auditorium needs a stretcher to accommodate<br />

ticket seekers<br />

Gross also presented corsages and<br />

boutineers to the six original members<br />

of the chorus who still participate The<br />

chorus began with 12 members in 1973<br />

and 50 percent are still there<br />

THE NOVELTY song. Fruitcake,<br />

was an audience favorite as well as<br />

Santa's visit during 'Twas the Night<br />

Before Christmas '' "My King" and<br />

Baritone Morand Zimmer made the new Ptexiglas-engraved Plymouth<br />

Community Chorua logo that served aa a backdrop, as well<br />

aa the "Alt Our Beat" signs Bud Simma and Jerry Echlin assisted<br />

in the project.<br />

"i ll be Home for Christmas"' received<br />

resounding applause<br />

The stage was adorned with dozens<br />

of red poinsettias and lights twinkled<br />

on trees. Kay Ray was responsible for<br />

the stage decorations<br />

Mary Decker, chorus member, arranged<br />

the refreshments available to<br />

William Grimmer (right), founder of the chorus,<br />

was honored at the concert when director Mike<br />

Gross presented him with a special plaque and<br />

announced that a scholarship would be given in<br />

the audience at intermission. The singers<br />

arrived with baskets and boxes of<br />

large chocolate chip cookies — all<br />

home-baked. Candy and soda pop also<br />

were offered<br />

The concert was videotaped by Mike<br />

Warmbier to be viewed by the chorus<br />

at their Christmas gathering<br />

The chorus was accompanied by<br />

Carol Chen, assistant director. Jeff Stopa<br />

on drums: Ron Utterbeck on bass:<br />

and Carol Huetteman on flute<br />

the scholarships will be announced early<br />

in the new year<br />
