Dear Members of the Media Center Community,
Thank you for celebrating 20 years of success with us.
The Mid-Peninsula Access Corporation (MPAC) opened its
doors on February 5, 1990. Who knew then that the tiny
enterprise with a peninsula-sized heart would grow up to
become the Media Center? We are thankful for the vision
and generosity of the Cable Co-op legacy funding and the
creativity and enthusiasm of thousands of local residents
for launching and sustaining us these twenty years!
With its communication resources and expertise, the Media
Center has aspired, since its inception, to build civic awareness,
celebrate cultural diversity, and become an integral
community resource.
Starting with a budget of $125K, we wrote grants, purchased
used equipment, and relied heavily on volunteers
to demonstrate the potentials of a grassroots-communications-hub.
In our first few years we procured major grants
to serve at-risk youth, produced numerous community
forums in a makeshift studio, reached out to hundreds of
civic and arts organizations, secured contracts to videotape
meetings for municipalities, and trained hundreds
of residents each year to create their own programming.
In the years that followed, we witnessed major shifts in technology,
which we mirrored by striving to be relevant and
strengthen our community. Our class offerings have changed
– reflecting the digital convergence of video, photography,
audio podcasting, and social media. Our web site features
video-on-demand clips from our 124 current community
program producers and a live webstream for each of our
five cable channels. Our budget has grown to over $800K.
2010 was a banner year for the Media Center!
Three grants enabled us to create high-impact media
projects:
-- Alive and Free Stories, a project with at-risk youth,
created video profiles of former gang members and
their transformations. The project included a web site
featuring the videos and community presentations.
We initiated the Sound Lounge where kids can hang
out on the weekend and perform live music, the only
such venue in Palo Alto, and we conducted our usual
Digiquest Summer Camps, Youth Advisory Council
and our Internship programs – all in support of youth
training, access and empowerment.
In response to five youths committing suicide within six
months, the Media Center collaborated on numerous
community initiatives to prioritize teen well-being.
We joined Project Safety Net (psnpaloalto.com) and
provided media support and coverage for their events.
We partnered with the PTA Council and Adolescent
Counseling Services to create six programs on topics
ranging from connecting with teens to bullying. We
covered all school board meetings and a city-sponsored
forum. Every program was heavily promoted and
discussed on our blog site and Facebook page.
We launched the Zoom-In Collaborative training
68 people to produce short-form videos including
citizen journalism pieces. Zoom-In volunteers
covered important local stories such as a tragic
plane crash and the community response
to an emotionally charged anti-GBLT rally.

We produced candidate forums and issue debates for
20 election races with two civic organizations and 368
government meetings.
Thank you for your steadfast support over the years. We
know we couldn’t have done it without you. We urge you
to review the following pages to discover the details of our
successful 20th year. And please continue our journey with
us, whether you take a class, become a donor/member,
volunteer as a field producer or studio crew, or be our fan by
watching shows on our cable cannels and on our website.
Best regards,
Financial Report
Operating Revenue Increases with Increased Services and Facility Use
PEG (Public, Education and Government) subscriber pass-through fees, representing 40% of the total revenue in
2010, were essentially flat as compared to 2009. Our Professional/media services and Contracted meeting coverage
represented 35% of our income. Professional/media services were up 7% from 2009, while our Contracted meeting
coverage decreased by 2% reflecting current economic conditions. We believe these same economic conditions
will continue to attract small businesses and non-profit organizations to use our competitively priced professional
services. Class & facility use fees, representing 9% of the 2010 income, increased by 17% over 2009 due to
increased use of our studio. The resulting total operating revenue for 2010 was $829,900, a 9% increase over 2009.
Expenditures Increase to Support Increased Services
Operating expenses were higher by 8% in 2010. This was largely due to part-time staffing and outside
services needed to produce a higher number of professional service projects. We also had an increase
in tech support expenses as we connected the middle and high schools in our service area to our
Institutional Network, enabling morning announcements to be broadcast live on our community channels.
Summary of Operations
Overall, we finished the year with $99,300 in net operating loss. This was the budgeted operating loss authorized
by the Board.
Capital Fund Continues to Recover
Our Net assets increased by $334,500 from 2009 to 2010 in spite of the operating loss. Most of that increase was
a result of the recovery in the investment market. The Board continues to invest the capital fund conservatively
with the advice of professional investment managers.
Our History
Thanks to Cable Co-op, Midpeninsula Community
Media Center was created by the 2001 merger of
Mid-Peninsula Access Corp, operating since 1990,
and Silicon Valley Community Communications,
established by Co-op to keep local programming
alive. We serve Atherton, East Palo Alto, Menlo
Park, Palo Alto, Stanford and unincorporated
portions of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.
Digiquest Summer Camp 2010
Digiquest Digital Media Workshops are a resource
to parents looking for a fun, educational experience
for their children over the summer. In 2010, we
had 40 campers attend five week-long camps.
In our Movie Production camps, campers learned
how to create their own movie from start to finish,
complete with a field shoot at Mitchell Park. In our
Movie Editing camps, campers got an in-depth look
at professional software such as Final Cut Pro,
Livetype, and Soundtrack Pro. In our TV Studio
Production camps, campers produced, directed,
and crewed their own TV shows. At summer’s end
we screened the campers’ videos to friends and
family and they were aired on our cable channels.
Many Digiquest campers remain active in the
Our Mission
Our Mission is to inform, inspire, and empower
people to speak and act on behalf of their
communities, to use television and the internet
to create and distribute programs that promote
and celebrate individual expression, local
achievements, education, cultural exchange, arts
appreciation, and civic engagement. The Media
Center is a 501(c)(3) public benefit corporation.
three of our former classes (Camera and Lighting;
Editing, and Publishing on the Web) and supports
new producers working on community projects.
Of the 68 Zoom In graduates, 44 became new
field producers and succeeded in creating 39
videos. Two of these videos went on to win WAVE
(Western Access Video Excellence) Awards at the
Alliance for Community Media’s Western Region
conference. We purchased four HD cameras to
meet the needs of our growing field producer ranks.
Overall a record number of 972 programs were
produced, an 11% increase over 2009. Besides
the 44 new field producers, we brought in 52 new
community producers to use the studio. Studio use
continues at a high level, turning out two shows a
night with our highly skilled studio crew volunteers.
We are now also scheduling studio shoots on
some Saturdays, because of increased demand.
Community Programs
We cablecast a total of 2,782 community programs on our channels in 2010, down by 6% due to a
significant decrease in imported programming. Community members produced 794 programs, a
5% increase over 2010. Staff members produced 178 programs, a 45% increase over 2010. 1,235
additional programs came in from producers in surrounding communities or via satellite as requested
by local residents and organizations. We brought in 52 new producers to our studio and 44 new field
producers joined the Zoom In Video Production Collaborative in its inaugural year. Over the I-NET
we carried live announcements from local schools and live meetings from city halls and school districts.
Local Election Coverage
The Media Center is proud to provide valuable voter
resources before each election. In 2010 we covered 20
different election races and ballot measures. We cosponsored
three candidate forums with the South San
Mateo County League of Women Voters. We worked with
the League of Women Voters of Palo Alto on an overview of
California propositions. In addition to their playbacks on our
cable TV channels, we put all the candidate forums online
in an indexed format so internet viewers could click on
particular segments of their choosing. All of the online clips
had links on the LWV SmartVoter web site.
Youth Services
2010 was a big year for Youth Services at the Media Center! With the departure of Becca Fisher as
Youth Services Coordinator, Brad Sanzenbacher took over to maintain partnerships, and keep youth
programs running strong.
Our Studio Volunteers
Our studio crew volunteers are our most cherished assets. Thanks to their talents and dedication, the Media
Center studio bustles with activity from 5:30 PM to 10:30 PM. In just five hours, two separate programs are
produced and ready to air. Trained volunteers carry out the vision of community producers by building the
