PASTORAL MUSINGS . . .
Pax et Bonum
No. 40
Robert Dougherty
One of the best bits of advice I ever received from any
of my teachers came from Fr. Julius Schott, O.F.M. He was
forever encouraging his students to keep a notebook for the
quotations that would attract their attention as they read their
way through life. I was like a lot of Juniors in High School in
that I thought I already knew whatever there was to know; but
for some wonderful reason I paid attention to that bit of wisdom
which Fr. Julius shared with us. It didn’t take long for that
first notebook to became two; and before I knew it, I had a
folder of insights and observations which I’ve accumulated and
continue to count as blessings in my life.
I’m sure that I’ve shared at least one of those quotations
with you before. I like it so much that anyone I know
hears it sooner or later. William Saroyan penned the words
as part of the preface for one of his plays. He encouraged...
In the time of your life, live—so that in that good time
there shall be no ugliness or death for yourself or for any
life your life touches. Seek goodness everywhere and

when it is found, bring it out of its hiding
place and let it be free and unashamed.
Place in matter and in flesh the least of
values for these are the things that hold
death and must pass away. Discover in all
things that which shines and is beyond corruption.
Encourage virtue in whatever
heart it may have been driven into secrecy
and sorrow by the shame and terror of the
world. In the time of your life, live—so that
in that wondrous time, you shall not add to
the misery and sorrow of the world, but shall
smile to the infinite delight and mystery of
it.
Saroyan’s challenge is a worthy project
for anyone’s life; and I’d like to think his words
are at the heart of what we do each year at St.
Peter’s when we gather to honor someone with
the Pax et Bonum Award. Our intention in
recognizing “what shines” in one person is to
“seek goodness” and “encourage virtue” in the
rest of us. This is the sixteenth year in which
the Pax et Bonum Award has been bestowed
upon a resident of the Chicago area “who lives
the Franciscan values and priorities of love
of God, care of the poor through work for
justice and peace, and respect for all creation.
Over the years we have honored Thomas
Havey (1990), Edward M. and Judge
Anne M. Burke (1991), James Serritella
(1992), Edward J. Rosewell + (1993), Rosemary
Koenig (1994), Dr. Jerry Hiller and
Marilyn Rochon (1995), Fr. Charles Faso,
O.F.M. (1996), Joseph Gentile (1997),
Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. (1998),
Msgr John J. Egan+ (1999), Sr. Patricia
Crowley, O.S.B. (2000), Fr. Gilbert Ostdiek,
O.F.M. and Fr. Zachary Hayes, O.F.M.
(2001), Joseph M. Lyons (2002), Raymond
Behrendt (2003), and Bernadette Mayer
(2004). It’s definitely a diverse group. There
are politicians and priests. Attorneys from both
sides of the Bench are reflected on this list.
Some of these honorees are well-known by
large segments of Chicago’s population. The
names of others are only recognized in more
limited circles. These men and women have
embodied those Franciscan values and priorities
in a variety of ways; but each has given all
of us reason to “smile at the infinite delight and
mystery” of life.
This year’s recipient of the Pax et
Bonum Award is one more good example of
those Franciscan values and priorities which
we cherish. Robert Dougherty was introduced
to them early as a student in the
Franciscan seminaries of the Sacred Heart
Province, and their influence continues to have
an impact on his life long after those years in
the seminary came to an end. His life’s journey
leaves no doubt about that. Mr. Dougherty
writes...
Most of my youth and early (very early)
young adulthood were spent with the
Franciscans. Such talented educators -
such interesting friends - such good folks
with whom to have traveled through those
years. There were the proverbial ups and
downs and plenty of happenings and people
to test one’s mettle, but I still hold those
years in a very special scrap book within
the confines of my personal history.
Westmont, Teutopolis and Quincy became
way stations for me along the path to I
knew not where. The Friars who touched
me during those years were truly the
Lesser Brothers. Father Julius, Father
Placid, Brother John Joseph, Brother
Alban, Father Tarsicius... Surely the passing
of time has helped to focus the lives of
these and others in clear snap shots of
Franciscan life.
Teaching was something I always saw in
my future. When my time within the confines
of the enclosure came to an end, it
was the path that called me. I learned to
teach following the (continued on page 4)

steps taken by most learners. For three
years I taught elementary school followed
by ten years at the high school level and
then some time at the college level. For
most of my teaching career on the South
Side of Chicago, I was fortunate to work
with the Adrian Dominican Sisters. In some
predestined coming together of affiliations,
they took over where the Franciscans left
off.
A master’s degree in corrections/criminal
justice and a chance perusing of a 1997
Tribune Job Listings led me to the doors
of St. Leonard’s House. It was a challenge;
the bricks were falling around me as I first
entered the House. I had so much to learn
about the frustrations faced by the formerly
incarcerated men and women. I had so
much to learn about what it would take to
rebuild the walls of St. Leonard’s - revitalizing
programs, balancing budgets, maneuvering
through the maze of staff and board
machinations - the list went on and on. But
God is good; and with lots of help and hard
work on the part of many people, St.
Leonard’s has more fully met its mission
of assisting those leaving prison with no
resources.
Although not a Franciscan house as such,
St. Leonard’s surely is a Franciscan endeavor
in spirit. For over fifty years, the
House has sat on the corner of Warren
Boulevard and Hoyne Street as a beacon
to those looking to begin a new life. The
founder, an impassioned Episcopal priest,
had a vision of what St. Leonard’s should
be and do. And so it has been for all these
years. Grounded in this vision, St.
Leonard’s has evolved over the years to
meet the ever-changing and growing needs
of formerly incarcerated individuals. How
fortunate I’ve been to be a part of this.
How fortunate I’ve been to be able once
again to share my life with lesser brothers
of a different sort.
It doesn’t take a lot of familiarity with
Franciscan tradition and spirituality to know
that St. Francis would be proud of and pleased
with what Robert Dougherty is doing with
his life. Francis of Assisi welcomed all of creation
as his brothers and sisters. Whether
someone was at the center of the Church or
at the edges of society, St. Francis reverenced
them equally as God’s gift to him. He believed
that the God “who shows no partiality”
would expect nothing less than that of him.
Robert Dougherty understands that Good
News and lives it. His Franciscan eyes see a
world filled with brothers and sisters worthy
of his reverence, and he gladly gives it.
We will recognize and celebrate the
good example which Robert Dougherty offers
us at this year’s Pax et Bonum Luncheon
on Thursday, October 6th at Noon
in the Empire Room of the Palmer House
Hilton. Reservation forms are available in
the vestibule at St. Peter’s or from Linda
Jamrozy (312-853-2376). Please, consider
yourself invited and encouraged to attend.
Your presence and participation will not only
recognize the efforts and contribution of Robert
Dougherty, it will also help make it possible
for the Franciscans at St. Peter’s to continue
to be of service to you.
Whether you attend the Pax et
WORKING WITH THE SCRIPTURES
( Mt. 21:33-43)
About a year ago I found a new doctor. Well, actually,
she wasn’t ‘new’ in the usual sense of the word. But
she was definitely ‘found’. Actually, she had been my
doctor before – until I ‘lost’ her when I received a notice
from her practice group informing me that I must choose
a new doctor. No one seemed willing or able to tell me
where my old doctor had gone so I assumed that she
had left the area or was, perhaps, no longer practicing
medicine.
Then one day a friend and I were discussing doctors (as
people of a certain age are wont to do). When I
mentioned my ‘lost’ doctor’s name my friend informed
me that not only was my doctor not ‘lost’, she was still
in practice and I could ‘find’ her office not far from where
I live! I had not been notified of this because my doctor
had entered into an agreement with her previous
employer and, being an honest and ethical practitioner,
had made no effort to take any of her patients with her.
I’m certain that, had I not ‘found’ her, my doctor would
have remained quite ‘lost’ to me rather than break her
prior agreement. She appreciated the fact that her
previous employers had invested much time and effort
in her and that it was largely because of them that she
was able to open an office of her own. And while she
looked forward to the prospect of being in private
practice she also respected her previous employers too
much to destroy what they had planted.
Unfortunately, not everyone is so honest. We’ve all heard
about employers who trained and mentored their
employees in good faith, believing that they would stay
and produce good fruit for the company, only to have
them resign, leaving a shambles of deleted files and empty
drawers behind while taking the product of the
company’s investment with them. “Come, let us kill him
and acquire his inheritance.” Who are the people who
have helped us to become successful in our work? How
have we chosen to repay their efforts?
Dear Friends in Christ,
A second collection will be taken up during
the October 1 and 2 liturgies to help support
our two prize-winning Archdiocesan newspapers,
The Catholic New World and the Spanish-language
Chicago Catolico. Despite their
success in helping me proclaim the Gospel and
teach the Catholic faith, these essential publications
need more than revenue from subscriptions
and advertising to assure their place in the mission
of the Archdiocese.
We all know that Catholics need to be
both informed and affirmed in their faith in a
world often at odds with Church teachings. Reporting
news and events from a faith perspective
is not something the secular media always
does well. The Catholic New World and Chicago
Catolico provide the Catholic perspective
on news and events - around the world and right
here in Lake and Cook counties.
As Archbishop, I teach the Catholic
faith. Through my regular columns, those of my
brother bishops and the columns and articles of
some of the top Catholic writers today, you will
learn about stories and events from a perspective
that is not available in any other media. By
looking at a world beyond your church and a
church beyond your world, your own faith will
be strengthened.
The cost is low, in the hope that as many
families as possible will subscribe. If you already
subscribe, please accept my thanks. If not, I ask
you to do so by calling (312) 655-7777. In either
case, your donation in the second collection on
October 1-2, whatever amount will help me continue
to publish these exemplary Catholic newspapers.
May God bless you and those you love.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
“Francis, go and repair my house, for as you can see, it is in ruins.”
Regrets and hesitations can create a chronic stress which challenges good people. We ask ourselves
Why didn’t I . . .? and, What am I afraid of? We know what needs doing, but hesitate because
of life-long fears. We fail to speak, or act, believing ourselves not as capable as others. When
others fail, we become angry with them, angry with ourselves, and ask, Why do I keep hesitating?
We then feel guilty, helpless, and depressed. What would we do when we learn to modify and
repair this cycle?
