EDITORIAL
Investments in agriculture reduce poverty
Investing in research and development supports agricultural growth and reduces poverty. Making more
and better investments in agriculture is one of the most effective ways to reduce hunger and poverty while
safeguarding the environment.
The world’s more than one billion farmers must be central to any agricultural investment strategy. But
farmers’ investments are often limited by unfavourable investment climates.
Farmers in low- and middle-income countries invest more than $170 billion a year in their farms - about $150
per farmer. This is three times as much as all other sources of investment combined, four times more than
contributions by the public sector, and more than 50 times more than official development assistance to these
countries.
Investing in agriculture is clearly paying off. Over the last 20 years, for example, the countries with the highest
rates of on-farm investment have made the most progress in halving hunger.
The regions where hunger and extreme poverty are most widespread - South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa
- have seen stagnant or declining rates of agricultural investment over three decades.
Recent evidence shows signs of improvement, but eradicating hunger in these and other regions, and achieving
this sustainably, will require substantial increases in the level of farm investment in agriculture and dramatic
improvements in both the level and quality of government investment in the sector.
In many low- and middle-income countries, farmers are often confronted with weak incentives to invest.
A number of factors can drastically reduce the incentive to invest, including poor governance; absence of rule
of law; high levels of corruption; insecure property rights; arbitrary trade practices; high “taxation” of
agriculture relative to other sectors; and inadequate levels and quality of rural infrastructure and public
services. Smallholders face specific, severe constraints, often including extreme poverty, weak property rights,
and poor access to markets and financial services. Overcoming these barriers will be essential to unlock the
full investment potential of farmers in many rural areas.
Governments and their development partners need to help smallholders mobilize their own savings and gain
improved access to credit. Stronger producer organizations, such as cooperatives, can help smallholders deal
with risks and provide better market access. Moreover, Social protection can contribute to the expansion of
the asset base by the poorest smallholders.
Large-scale investments in agriculture, like the acquisition of land by private companies and funds, are
transparent, accountable, socially beneficial and environmentally sustainable.
Nowadays animal production suffers from pathogenic
pressure and disease incidence that negatively influence
the animal performance. Especially, it harmfully affects
rates of growth, feed intake and reproductive performance.
In order to prevent as well as reduce these negative
effects several types of antibiotics are used. Since
the introduction of antibiotics in animal production the
preventive use of antibiotics has extensively increased,
mainly for its growth stimulating properties. Moreover
antibiotics are cheap and are highly effective on farms
with many problems regarding animal performance and
disease incidence. However, there are disadvantages of
antibiotics applying. The intensive use of antibiotics in
poultry is one of the risk factors of antibiotic resistance
development. During last years it is more and more assumed
that the preventive use of antibiotics is a risk
factor for the existence of MRSA (Methicillin Resistant
Staphylococcus Aureus) in different types of animal husbandry.
Development of antibiotic resistance is not only
a risk for the poultry sector. Also it can create dramatic
outcomes for human due to the consumption of meat
contaminated with antibiotic resistant bacteria. Based
on this, there is need for alternatives for preventive use
of antibiotics. Alternatives should improve animal health
and stimulate animal growth.
What can be a new effective alternative?
Therefore Framelco, a worldwide leader in feed industry
developed a very special unique solution – the product
line consisting of monoglycerides of fatty acids: the Fra
C-line.
Products of the Fra C-line consist of 1-monoglycerides
of propionic acid, butyric acid and lauric
acid, combined with phytogenics. 1-monoglycerides
are formed via esterification of a fatty acid with glycerol
(Figure 1). In 1972, Kabara et al.,showed already
that monoglycerides of fatty acids have an antimicrobial
effect. In vitro studies showed that 1-monoglycerides,
due to their properties are up to 30 times more effective
compared to pure organic acid. Feeding poultry 1monoglycerides
combined with essential oils will result
in improved animal health and performance, without affecting
feed intake. Taking into account all these factors
the Fra C-line is developed and presented with the following
products: Fra AC34, Fra LAC34, Fra VC4, Fra LBB,
Fra C12 and Fra C3 AM.
TM : new community nest from Roxell
Koozii TM new community nest from Roxell
KooziiTM is Roxell’s new automatic nest for broiler breeders and commercial
layers. KooziiTM is especially developed for the production of super quality
hatching or table eggs. The community nest was therefor built around the
optimized comfort and welfare of the hens.
The nest boxes are spacious and oxygen rich for a maximum acceptance
by the birds. A special positioning of the slats at the entrance
avoids accumulation of manure in front of the nest. A wood protection on
the entrance board excludes leg and breast injuries. The expulsion of the
birds happens extremely gentle. For broiler breeders this done through a
movable back, while for layers the farmers can choose between a movable
back or a tilting floor. The transportation of the hatching or table eggs to the
collection table is done with the greatest care. The AstroTurf pads in the nest
prevent hair cracks and soiled eggs. The perforated egg belt not only optimizes
the climate in the egg channel it also holds the eggs in place so that
they don’t bump into each other.
The eggs reach the collecting
table through a smooth and open
To keep pace with growing
demand for high-quality chicks,
hatcheries large enough to produce
more than two million day old chicks
per week are no longer unusual.
These growing hatcheries
have become highly automated to
handle chicks in such large numbers
and to promote short ‘throughput
time’ - another key measure of chick
quality, for its influence on post hatch
performance. The case for automation
is further strengthened by the
growing cost and reduced availability
of qualified labour.
At the core of these transitions
in the poultry industry, lies a
duty of care from the retailer and ultimately
to the consumer, to deliver
the highest standards of animal welfare
and offer complete traceability,
from egg production and hatchery
all the way down the chain.
Together, these factors create
increasing demand for innovation,
to support and improve standards
of animal welfare - and to
increase the availability of information
from source.
In response, Pas Reform
Academy has looked for more intelligent,
innovative ways to handle
valuable day old chicks, with minimum
impact on their health and
well-being, while at the same time
reducing their throughput time.
This focus has placed Vision
Technology at the heart of a new system
for chick counting and quality
analysis, to produce significant increases
in efficiency, chick uniformity
and standards of animal welfare.
Pas Reform has named this latest
innovation SmartCount TM .
Improved efficiency, uniformity
and chick welfare
Pas Reform’s SmartCount TM applies
Vision Technology, a complex pairing
of digital imaging and pre-defined
algorithms, to count and analyse
groups of day old chicks.
Image sequences are interpreted
using these criteria, pre-set
by Pas Reform Academy, to process
the chicks in stress-free conditions.
With an accuracy of two chicks per
thousand, SmartCount TM ’s nett system
capacity is 60,000 chicks per
hour.
The same level of intelligence
and accuracy defines a range
of key parameters, including smart
pattern recognition for even, gentle
distribution in the right numbers
into the chick boxes at the end of
the conveyor, and precise, optimized
spray vaccination.
SmartCount TM ’s chick analysis
system incorporates calculations
for uniformity scoring – and by integrating
SmartCount TM statistics
with SmartCenter TM hatchery information
system data, the hatchery
is equipped with the most detailed
level of data analysis and batch reporting
available today.
Watter ® : safe,
sustainable
disinfection for the
hatchery sector
With more than 90 years
invested in its global
development, Pas Reform
has witnessed many changes
in the poultry sector, both in
The Netherlands and worldwide.
One of the key debates
to emerge in recent years has
surrounded the use of formaldehyde
and other chemical
preparations, to meet increasingly
stringent regulations
surrounding health and hygiene
in the commercial
hatchery.
There is evidence that the use
of formaldehyde, originally and
accidentally discovered in 1859,
represents a risk both to human
health and to chick welfare. Yet
despite mounting international
pressure to eradicate its use
in the hatchery, formaldehyde
persists as a solution for disinfection
largely for the lack of a
suitable alternative.
In October 2011, Pas Reform signed
an exclusive agreement with Watter,
an award-winning Dutch company
that has pioneered a clean, efficient
alternative to chemical preparations,
including formaldehyde.
Watter’s ‘Nontox’ Electrical
Chemical Activation (ECA) disinfec-

tion technology harnesses the power
of naturally occurring oxidants using
water, salt and electricity to produce
a powerful, safe and highly sustainable
non-toxic disinfectant that neutralizes
bacteria, fungi and viruses.
The disinfecting action is the
effect of combining free radicals with
active chlorine compounds, such as
HClO and ClO, which are produced
when electricity is passed through
the brine solution created by adding
the salt tablets to the water.
Independent tests carried
out by Dutch Organisation for Applied
Scientific Research (TNO) and
the Dutch National Institute for Public
Health and the Environment (RIVM),
have found Watter’s ECA system to
be effective in six key EN standards
for the disinfection of Food, Hands,
Medical Instruments, Rooms, Surfaces
and Water Sources.
TNO laboratory studies
showed that Nontox delivered at least
the required 5 log reduction of various
bacteria, including E.coli, Staphylococcus
aureus, Enterococcus hirae
and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, in
accordance with European standard
EN 1276. A screening test based on
EN1276 test principles showed the
same convincing results with MRSA
and Salmonella Typhimurium target
bacteria. The fungicidal effect of
Nontox, including the inactivation of
Aspergillus niger, was also effective
to >4 log reduction, to meet EN standard
1650.
Simple, safe and sustainable
In simple terms, Watter’s patented
Nontox unit produces a safe, powerful
disinfecting solution by adding
salt and electricity to water. The
result can be described as ‘elec-
Circle 7 on enquiry card
Hatcheries and Incubators
trolysed oxidizing water’ and with
a Nontox unit installed, the hatchery
can continue to supply as much
of this solution as it needs, for the
routine disinfection of facilities and
equipment - and for fogging to sanitise
hatching eggs prior to setting.
The disinfectant leaves no residues
on surfaces, and no build-up of resistance
has been encountered in
bacteria.
Putting Nontox to the test
With certification for on-farm use
that confirms both claims and regulatory
compliance for Nontox, leading
Dutch hatchery Probroed & Sloot
was the first commercial operation to
test Watter’s system in a live hatchery
situation.
The Nontox system has a
minimal footprint and in this hatchery
is plumbed to an 80 litre tank
that holds the ready-to-use disinfecting
solution: a reserve to be drawn
upon as required, for washing, fogging
and other hatchery-disinfection
applications – and topped up again
between cycles and when demand
is low.
The system is capable of
producing 70-80 litres of disinfecting
solution per hour and the salt tablets
are supplied in sealed, conveniently
sized ‘whole-use’ polythene bags,
which go straight into the unit’s hop-
per.
Modular configuration
means that simply adding additional
units to feed a larger reservoir will
produce larger quantities of Nontox.
And by delivering a sustainable
source, on site, the Nontox system
provides a convincing return, not
only by reducing the costs associated
with frequently repeated orders
for chemicals and disinfectant over
time, but also for its associated benefits
to the welfare and performance
of the chicks and the health of hatchery
personnel.
A sustainable alternative
Nontox represents an exciting and
genuine route to abolishing the use
of formaldehyde in hatcheries, while
respecting and protecting the welfare
of people and chicks. Hatchery
personnel need no longer be exposed
to its harmful effects and day
old chicks can be protected from the
detrimental effect of formaldehyde
on the tracheal microvilli.
With previous innovations including,
for example, the incorporation
of MicrobanTM into hatcher baskets
and the integration of cooling
pipes into the anodized aluminum
walls of Pas Reform’s SmartProTM incubation
system, The Watter system
represents another important step in
creating safer, cleaner hatchery environments.
Pas Reform has worldwide
distribution rights for Nontox in the
hatchery sector, and is collaborating
actively with Watter to develop a
variety of new applications: still further
innovations that underpin Pas
Reform’s commitment to delivering
exemplary hygiene in the modern
hatchery.
Cobb-vantress And Hendrix Genetics Extend R&d Partnership
Affordable and higher quality food
will result from new genetic advances
inspired by a unique industry collaboration.
Two of the world’s largest
animal breeding companies aim to
achieve further breakthroughs in the
field of genomics during the next
three years of a joint development
agreement (JDA)
Arkansas-based Cobb-
Vantress Inc. and Hendrix Genetics
B.V. which is headquartered in
Boxmeer in the Netherlands initially
set up the JDA in 2008 to share and
promote expertise, particularly in
the fast-growing field of genomics.
Already new genomic selection
tools have been discovered and developed,
such as the cutting-edge
SNP Chip for chickens. This is a
glass slide that can analyze between
60,000 and 1 million variations in
DNA sequences, - or Single Nucleotide
Polymorphisms (SNPs) - which
act as biological markers and help
scientists locate a range of genes associated
with disease.
The extended agreement
will intensify efforts to develop new
tools and discover fresh insights
into animal genomics in order to improve
breeding programs and help
increase world food production.
Dr. Gerard Albers, head of
research and technology at Hendrix
Genetics, said: “This is like two
renowned chefs sharing recipes,
swapping thoughts and ideas on
how to create a perfect dish. There
are many ways to create this dish,
many ingredients that can be used,
and with shared views we are able to
come closer to this perfect dish.”
The collaboration is the biggest
within the animal breeding industry
and will produce animals that
are more productive, less susceptible
to disease and at reduced cost,
therefore helping to tackle global
food shortages. According to the
United Nations’ World Food Program
there are 870 million undernourished
people in the world today.
The JDA will also strengthen
Cobb’s leading position in broiler
breeding and Hendrix Genetics’
renowned role in layer hen, turkey,
pig and aquaculture genetics, while
enabling the two companies to further
explore joint venture business
opportunities.
Cobb-Vantress is the world’s
leading supplier of broiler breeding
stock and technical expertise for the
chicken meat industry. It has about
2,500 employees and serves the industry
in more than 90 countries.
Hendrix Genetics has nearly
2,500 employees worldwide and operations
in 24 countries and provides
expertise and resources to producers
in more than 100 countries.
Jerry Moye, president of
Cobb-Vantress, said: “The joint efforts
of the Hendrix and Cobb R&D
Circle 8 on enquiry card
Animal Breeding
teams have provided valuable
knowledge for both of our companies.
“Cobb is excited to continue
our partnership with Hendrix Genetics.
We look forward to discovering
what opportunities may be in our future.”
Antoon van den Berg, CEO
of Hendrix Genetics, said: “Bringing
together the resources and expertise
of Hendrix Genetics and Cobb
allows us to accelerate the rate of
research and to meet the challenges
of food production. “In genomics,
scale is important, and the basics
of breeding and genomics apply in
most animal sectors.”
Study shows arsenic in rice
reduced when irrigating with
sprinklers
A study published in the American
Chemical Society journal Environmental
Science & Technology reveals
that by using sprinkler irrigation
to grow rice, the concentration
of total arsenic found in rice is 50
times lower than rice grown under
continuous flood irrigation.
The study was published
in the American Chemical Society
journal Environmental Science &
Technology on August 7, 2012.
The study took place in Sardinia,
Italy, at an experimental field
of the University of Sassari. Arsenic
in rice is a growing concern worldwide,
especially in the regions
where rice is a staple food source,
as it isextremely toxic and carcinogenic.
Arsenic is naturally occurring
in soil and water which can be
absorbed by the rice plant, particularly
in fields with continuous flooding.
As demand for rice increases, a
solution to this issue is needed. Valley
Irrigation started the Circles for
Rice project in 2008and has worked
with growers worldwide to identify a
profitable method to grow rice with
center pivot sprinkler irrigation.
VWS helps to solve the
problems related to water and
wastewater in Saudi Arabia
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies
is the global leader in water
treatment. Veolia Water Solutions &
Technologies provides
the complete range of
services required to
design, build, operate,
maintain, upgrade
and manage water and
wastewater treatment
facilities and systems.
Badr Ghawji, Managing
Director of Veolia
Water Solutions and
Technologies (VWS),
has pledged at the Saudi
Water and Power Forum
(SWPF) that the company
would work closely
with the Kingdom to
promote water conservation
efforts, generate
awareness about the
need to recycle waste-
water and search for sustainable
waste management solutions. VWS is
armed with innovative solutions and
technologies to render better support
to Saudi public organizations,
private companies and industrial
clients.
VWS has involved itself in
projects for the Ministry of Water
& Electricity to help Saudi government’s
program to utilize dam water
as an alternative source. Moreover,
VWS has also entered into a contract
with the Ministry of Water for
a reverse osmosis plant, to supply
drinking water to the people at Al-
Ghat. VWS has just recently signed a
contract for a water treatment plant
at Quwaieiah, where nano membranes
are used along with the conventional
reverse osmosis.VWS has
been awarded the process design
and supply of water purifying units,
pressure filters, and reverse osmosis
plants.
Ghawji said the VWS is in
the final stage of completing nine
reverse osmosis (RO) plants for the
Ministry of Water in villages along
the northern border of Saudi Arabia.
The company has completed a large
sewage treatment plant for King
Saud University in Riyadh. The plant
will treat sewage to produce a clean
and quality product that can be used
for cooling towers and irrigation. The
system has been awarded a Middle
East Economic Digest (MEED) quality
award for the best reuse project
in Saudi Arabia for 2012.
Ghawji added that VWS also
focuses on the reuse of wastewater.
To this end, the company has built a
pilot plant for Saudi Arabian Basic
Industries Corporation (SABIC) to
recycle processed water.
The VWS had already set up
its own blending facility in Riyadh
to produce water treatment chemicals
under the trade name Hydrex.
The Hydrex range of products covers
chemicals used for cooling, boilers,
potable processes, reverse osmosis,
wastewater and processing
water. These new Veolia technologies
would go a long way in solving
the problems related to water and
wastewater in Saudi Arabia.

Pearl’s Premium Grows in tough conditions
Pearl’s Premium Ultra Low
Maintenance Lawn Seed is the
result of eight years of research and
development by scientist and environmental
expert Jackson Madnick,
who said Pearl’s Premium grows at
one quarter the rate of blue grass,
requiring mowing only once a
month rather than every week. With
12-inch roots capturing moisture,
Pearl’s Premium needs NO chemical
fertilizer, rarely needs water once
established, and looks like a lush
green lawn year-round.
Pearl’s Premium is low-maintenance
and drought-tolerant grass seed that
needs little or no water and very
little mowing. The company
recommends using organic
fertilizer or compost once or twice
a year, which reduces the harmful
runoff that is typical of today’s
landscaping.
The three new MF 3600 Xtra tractors
get more power and extra torque
- generated by new AGCO POWER
engines which employ a common rail
fuel injection system, with Electronic
Engine Management control that allows
the engine to react immediately
to changing loads and conditions.
Maximum power is developed
at just 2,000rpm, which provides
more power at the PTO and
reduces fuel consumption and noise.
There is constant power between
1,800rpm and 2,200rpm, which enables
operators to throttle back and
work at lower rpm – saving fuel and
the need to change gear.
With electronics managing
the engine speed, the rpm remains
constant, which improves output and
efficiency with PTO-powered implements
and makes life easier for operators.
A further benefit of the Electronic
Engine Management is it provides
more convenience with a new
electronic hand throttle, which provides
more accurate and precise engine
speed.
There is also a new engine
speed memory, which is activated
by pressing a small button next to
the throttle dial, to memorise and recall
a set speed.
More comfort and control
A new cab interior, which follows
the familiar Massey Ferguson family
style, offers high comfort and control
and is quieter than predecessors.
Externally a new vertical exhaust
pipe improves visibility by virtually
‘disappearing’ behind the cab
post and also allows the front windscreen
to open fully.
Inside operators will find
new Massey Ferguson-style switches
in a new layout, along with new levers
to control the three point linkage
and hydraulic valves.
Slick shifting transmission
All three new MF 3600 Xtra tractors
are equipped with the latest generation
24/12 Powershuttle transmission,
which provides efficient power
delivery and exceptional operator
convenience.
Perfectly matched to the requirements
of this power bracket, the
new transmission offers push-button
convenience with a declutch button,
fitted to the top of the gear lever,
which allows operators to change a
mechanical gear, stop and pull away
without having to use the clutch foot
pedal. Ideally suited to loader work,
operators can declutch with the button
and shift the lever to change direction
without using the foot clutch.
The Speedshift button ‘splits’
each gear providing a total of 24 forward
speeds and 12 reverse, from
the four gears in three ranges. PowerShift
operation is easy - simply involving
pressing the Speedshift button
to change up or down.
“Climate change represents one
of the greatest challenges of our age,”
commented Franco Fusignani, New Holland
Agriculture Brand Leader, “but it can
also be seen as an opportunity to catalyze
a transition to a low-carbon, resource efficient,
sustainable agriculture.”
Tractors and Combine Harvesters
New Holland Agriculture Gold Sponsor of Sustainable Innovation
Forum Alongside COP18
New Holland’s commitment to
the environment has led to its pioneering
Clean Energy Leader strategy, which was
launched in 2006 to look for practical and
accessible ways to reconcile the needs of
the agricultural industry with increasingly
urgent calls for action to protect the environment.
This strategy has led to heavy
investment in its own low emissions engine
technology together with its sister,
powertrain manufacturer FPT Industrial;
as a result, New Holland today offers the
widest range of Tier 4A compliant products
in the industry with 33 tractors and
18 harvesters. It has also led to New Holland’s
involvement in the biomass industry
in Europe, North America, Brazil and India,
where it works with industry-leading biomass
operations.
New Holland Agriculture’s participation
in this important Forum is testament
to its commitment to supporting
local farming communities through a
smooth transition to sustainable development
while protecting natural resources for
future generations. New Holland has been
working in agricultural projects around the
world to ease countries’ transitions to sustainable
mechanized farming, integrating
innovation and good practices to provide
efficient solutions that optimize the use of
resources and increase productivity while
cutting costs, fuel consumption and emissions.
The correct use of the appropriate
machinery is key in making the most
of scarce resources, and New Holland has
business-wise. When agriculture is approached
with a long term vision of sustainable
growth that aims to protect from
the damaging effects of inappropriate agricultural
practices, such a healthy agriculture
is good for our business, good for the
environment, and good for the local community.
It uses natural resources efficiently,
contributing to their preservation, is
cost effective and productive, and it opens
New Holland Agriculture is a global manufacturer and seller of agricultural equipment. Its reputation is built on the success of its customers, cash crop producers, livestock farmers,
New Portable Chlorophyll Content Meter For Very Small Leaves
ADC BioScientific Ltd, specialists in the design and manufacture
of high quality Plant science instrumentation,
has introduced the world’s first, cost effective solution
for the non-destructive measurement of chlorophyll
content in very small leaves.
Chlorophyll content is an important measurement
parameter used in a wide variety of crop science
and environmental research applications.
The new CCM300 employs a novel fluorescence
ratio technique enabling accurate chlorophyll content
determinations to be made without the need to fill the
whole measurement aperture. This allows very small
leaves, curved leaves and very thick samples to be measured
easily and quickly, thereby overcoming the major
drawback with other instruments using traditional absorption
methods.
The CCM300 is able to determine chlorophyll
content in conifers, needles, grasses, mosses, cacti, fruit
and other difficult to measure samples. Each measurement
takes only 5 seconds to perform and is presented
as both Chlorophyll Fluorescence Ratio (CFR) and as
relative chlorophyll content in mg m-2. Circle 16 on enquiry card
4B increases capacity of STARCO
steel elevator buckets
4B has invested in tooling to increase
the capacities of their popular STAR-
CO steel elevator buckets; as a result,
all 4B’s STARCO steel buckets
now have the same or greater capacities
than comparable buckets of
their competitors.
The Starco bucket was originally
invented by 4B Braime’s French
subsidiary, SETEM, in the 1980s and
was the first low profile elevator
bucket to use centrifugal discharge
on a parabolic elevator head to
achieve much higher capacities on
a given elevator leg. As such, the
STARCO bucket has revolutionised
the elevator buckets market. The
Starco elevator bucket has been engineered
to provide perfect fill & discharge
for a wide range of products.
It operates at wide speed range, up
to 4.55m/s.
It is not surprising that the
STARCO bucket has become a very
popular bucket, and has been copied
by a number of companies, with
varying results. Circle 17 on enquiry card
In a range of tests that 4B
has carried out to compare their
own 4B STARCO buckets with their
competitors’ buckets, it has become
clear that a lots of buckets actually
have a lower capacity than what is
claimed on paper; also the quality
of the bucket itself can be very different
depending on the production
process and the quality of the steel
used.
Therefore great care should
be taken when
selecting a STARCO bucket (or a
similar model). On
request, 4B can provide test results
and field evidence to show the differences
between different models.
Weighing only 275gm, the battery operated,
hand-held CCM300 features a colour, touch screen display
and a large 2Gb internal data storage capacity.
EuroTier 2012 more international than ever
EuroTier is more international
than ever before. 38,000 farmers,
investors and expert visitors
came to the Exhibition Grounds
in Hanover to gather information.
This corresponds to an increase
of over 50 percent by comparison
with the previous maximum
level. The largest contingents
of international visitors came
from the Netherlands, Austria,
Denmark, France, Poland, Spain
and the United Kingdom. Nearly
3,000 investors and persons in
charge of large-scale farms from
Eastern Europe came to Hanover
to see what is available on the
market. The high numbers of visitors
from the Near, Middle and
Far East as well as from Central
and South America also deserve
mention. Over 7,000 visitors from
these regions were registered.
Visitor numbers from Germany
remained constant at around
122,000.
The number of exhibitors
has increased by 25 percent
compared with 2010. Altogether
2,445 direct exhibitors and 41 additionally
represented firms from
a total of 51 countries presented
their goods and services and
their innovations. Around half of
the exhibitors (1,151) came from
outside Germany, representing
a 40 percent increase over 2010.
This underpins EuroTier’s unique
position as the world’s largest exhibition
in this field.
EuroTier is the platform
for launching new machines, installations
and farm inputs on the
international markets. The innovations
in the areas of animal hous-
18 Vol. 28 No.9
ing construction, machinery and
installations for feeding and husbandry,
electronics, instrumentation
and control engineering, as
well as data management shown
here generate new impulses for
effectiveness, efficiency, precision
and animal welfare.
With around 160,000 visitors
from over 100 countries, EuroTier
has achieved a new record
level. These figures represent an
increase of around ten percent by
comparison with 2010. EuroTier
is the globally most important information
forum for professional
animal husbandry. The farmers,
dealers and investors are making
their farms and businesses fit for
the future with modern technology
and signposting strategies.
This underscores the importance
of agriculture as a key sector of
the 21st century.
The cattle sector at Euro-
Tier is unique worldwide with its
presentations of genetic resources
and innovative installations
and equipment. These form the
basis for the strategies that beef
and dairy farmers are adopting
to prepare for the phasing out of
the milk quota in 2015.
The “World Poultry Show”
at EuroTier completely satisfied
its goal of being the global forum
for the poultry sector. Breeders,
producers and processors from
all over the world used the com-
prehensive and highly specialized
programme to develop the
good prospects in the markets.
A further stand-alone
feature of EuroTier is the unique
programme addressing feed and
animal health.
The Technical Programme
at EuroTier 2012 was very well attended
by the visitors. The international
events for the dairy and
pig farmers and the International
Poultry Day immediately preceding
EuroTier have become established
highlights for practical
farmers and related specialists
from all over Europe. They attracted
around 1,300 international
experts.
BioEnergy Decentral reported
a constant number of
around 42,000 visitors, despite
the current market situation in
Germany. The share of international
visitors increased by twelve
percent compared with 2010.
The next EuroTier including
BioEnergy Decentral will be
held in Hannover from 11 to 14
Farmer Automatic’s EuroTier 2012
trade show presentation successful
Innovative rearing system COMBI PULLET impresses trade
professionals
Farmer Automatic, German manufacturer of economic
poultry housing systems, impressed visitors at the EuroTier
2012 trade show in Hanover with its intelligent housing
systems. From November 13 through 16, Farmer Automatic
exhibited various products at its 300 m2 booth with a fresh,
modern design including its new pullet rearing system:
COMBI PULLET. The combination aviary system allows
pullets to be reared for both conventional and alternative
housing/aviaries. It is the latest addition to the wide range
of products offered by Farmer Automatic, which includes
ten premium-quality housing systems for layers, pullets, and
broilers.
For the first time at the trade show, the forward-looking
company also launched its new, attractive brand design.
The modern, characteristic corporate logo reflects progress
and innovation and represents the company’s top-quality
product technology. In addition to the corporate logo, the
system brochures and company website were also completely
revamped. Red and gray are the dominant colors
in the uniform, self-confident overall brand presentation,
which also includes a few yellow accents in consistency with
the new logo. The new website is designed to be very userfriendly
and easy to navigate and provides interested parties
and customers comprehensive information about Farmer
Automatic’s product portfolio.
A few days after the trade show, Farmer Automatic
sums up on a very positive note: “The trade show visitors
were very interested in our new Combi Pullet system and
we also received a lot of praise for our new brand design,”
says Christian Dyckerhoff, CEO of the long-established
company based in Laer, Germany. “We had the opportunity
to engage in many interesting discussions and to establish
new contacts, and we are really very satisfied with the results.
What more could we want?” The event featuring live
music that Farmer Automatic invited its customers to attend
last Thursday evening at the trade show was also a complete
success. The company, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary
this year, held the event to thank all of its customers for
their long-standing loyalty.
SR560 million worth grain
silos and flour mill project in
Saudi Arabia
Jazan Gov. Prince Muhammad bin
Nasser laid the foundation stone for
a grain silos and flour mill project
worth more than SR 560 million at Jazan
Port. Walid Al-Kheraiji, director
general of the General Organization
for Grain Silos and Flour mills, said
the project would have a capacity
to store 120,000 tons of wheat while
flour mill would supply 600 tons of
flour daily.
Shortage in fodder causes
Livestock prices to rise
An expected shortage in fodder
would cause Livestock prices to rise
15 percent this winter in Saudi Arabia.
Unjustified storing of fodder directly
causes price instability. The fodder
prices have also risen because farmers
have stopped growing wheat.
