Introduction
Ein Traum wird wahr: Eine
Provinienz ist endlich
spielbar für Musikwissenschaftler,
Organisten und Orgelliebhaber.
Die große Orgel von Pierre
Die Kirche hat als Grablege
der belgischen Könige mit ihrer
monumentalen Krypta seit ihrem
Bau stets eine Sonderstellung innegehabt.
Als die Orgel erbaut
wurde, wollte man auch in Sachen
Orgelbau hier den großen
Kirchen der europäischen Nachbarhauptstädten
in Nichts nachstehen
und verpflichtete einen
der besten Ogelbaumeister des
Landes, Pierre Schyven, der nach
Antwerpen hier in Brüssel sein
zweitgrößtes Instrument überhaupt
erbaute.
Zweifellos aufgrund dieser besonderen
Stellung dieser Kirche,
hat die Orgel nach einem Umbau
durch Salomon van Bever
1912 in einem Dornröschenschlaf
quasi alle Moden und

Im Rahmen meiner CD-Einspielungen
erschienen als SOCD-199 bei
Ästhetik von SOS-2
Alle Register wurden in Terzen
aufgenommen. Auch im Orgelbau
verwendet man eine Aufstellung
der Orgelpfeifen auf der
Windlade im Terzabstand (zumeist
tif), um so eine bessere
Klangabstrahlung und Klangvermischung
bereits im Orgelgehäuse
zu erreichen. Dieses
Prinzip hat sich jahrhundertelang
bewährt und konnte auch Anwendung
finden bei der Erstellung
dieser Klangbibliothek. Das
nicht jede Pfeife aufgenommen
wurde liegt allein an der Erfordernissen
der Praktibilität, da
häufig die Polyphonie von Samplern
noch eingeschränkt ist,
oder aber bei mehrstimmigem
Spiel rasch an die technischen
Grenzen stößt. Gleichwohl gibt
es kritische Register im Orgel-
bau, die durch ihre spezifische
Entwicklung des Klangspektrums
mit jedem ihrer Töne aufgenommen
werden müssen. Bei Schwebungen
(Voix céleste, Unda
maris, Bourdon céleste etc.) ist
die Anzahl der Schwebungen abhängig
von der Tonhöhe. Hier
den Sampler, wie sonst gut möglich,
die Töne zwischen den Originalsamples
einfach
interpolieren zu lassen, würde
das Register seines Charakters
berauben. Die Voix céleste des
III. Manuals (Récit-Expressif) und
die Unda maris des II. Manuals
(Positif) wurden folgerichtig mit
allen Tönen aufgenommen.
Die Töne aller instruments liegen
mit einer Tonlänge von mindestens
30 Sekunden vor. Die
Töne des Pédale werden darüber
hinaus mit einer Länge von 60
Sekunden wiedergegeben.
Alle aufgenommenen Töne
wurden in keiner Weise geloopt.
Looping bedeutet letztlich dem
Klangmaterial neue Informationen
hinzuzufügen, was das Ursprungsmaterial
nicht länger
original sein läßt. Ich habe mich
daher bewußt dagegen entschieden.
Der natürliche Nachhall der
Kirche wird als Key-Release wiedergegeben.
Wird eine Taste losgelassen,
wird ein zweites
Sample gespielt, das den reichen
Hall der Kirche wiedergibt. Dieser
Hall ist nicht nachbearbeitet
worden. Er wurde in der Kirche
selbst aufgenommen. Diese sogenannte
Hallfahne ist darüberhinaus
weiterhin Bestandteil des
Originalsamples. Die Idee dazu
habe ich weltweit erstmals angewendet
gibt gute Gründe, den originalen
Alle instruments haben in der
Zwei Neumann KM130 Mikrophone
keinerlei Sound-Design geduldet.
Jedes Manual der Orgel
wurde separat gesamplet, also
ohne die Verwendung der Koppeln.
Diese lassen sich in verschiedenen
Arbeitsumgebungen
der Sampler selbst erstellen. Es
wurde darüberhinaus keine Geräuschbearbeitung(NoiseReduction)
benutzt. Die ersten
Sekunden enthalten detaillierte
akusto-psychische Informationen
die zur Unterscheidung der Register
benötigt werden. Also sind
auch die Geräusche zu hören,
die durch Abstrakte oder Ventile
der Spielanlage oder das Windsystem
mit seiner Balganlage
hervorgerufen werden. Mein Ziel
war die denkbar sauberste und
dabei unverfälschte Wiedergabe
dieser großen Orgel, orientiert
allein an der Musikalität.

beliebte erste belgische Königin
Louise Marie von Frankreich
(1812-1850) nach den Ideen

Der belgische Staat beauftragt
1870 die angesehene Werkstatt
Merklin-Schütze mit dem Bau einer
großen Orgel. Joseph Merklin
und Friedrich Schütze spielen
bei der Erneuerung des belgischen
Orgelbaus eine bedeutende
Rolle. Hierbei werden sie vom
Direktor des Brüsseler Konservatoriums,
François-Joseph Fétis
unterstützt. 1855 wird die Firma
Ducroquet in Paris durch Merklin-Schütze
übernommen. Bis
1858 ist hier Charles-Spakman
Barker Werkstattmeister. Seit
1843 in Diensten Merklins und
ab 1851 dessen Werkstattleiter
in Brüssel, übernimmt der 1827
in Brüssel geborene Pierre Schyven
zusammen mit Armand und
Jaques Verreyt die Werkstatt und
führt sie unter dem Namen P.
Schyven & Cie fort. Späte Brüsseler
Merklin-Instrumente und frühe
Schyven-Instrumente unterscheiden
sich nur wenig. Cavaillé-Coll
soll Schyven (die Brüsseler Linie)
sehr geschätzt haben, im Gegensatz
zur der von ihm gefürchteten
Pariser Werkstatt. So kann man
Schyven auch nicht als Cavaillé-Coll-Epigonen
betrachten,
vielmehr sah er sich den gleichen
Prinzipien im Orgelbau verpflichtet.
Von 1871 bis 1874 baut
Schyven an der Orgel zu Laeken.
Nach der Orgel der Kathedrale
in Antwerpen wird sie sein größtes
Grand-Orgue und Récit (der
komponiert eigens für diesen
Anlaß die Orgel-Solo-Version
François (1856-1927) mehr und
bislang in der bekannten Orgelbauwerkstatt
von Hippolyt Loret,
ist diesem 1866, als Loret seine
Werkstatt nach Paris verlegte, gefolgt
und auch bei Aristide
Cavaillé-Coll seine Kenntnisse
perfektioniert, dessen Konzeption
seine gesamte weitere Karriere
estimmen sollte.1880 übernehmen
die Gebrüder van Bever die
Werkstatt Loret und führen sie in
Laeken weiter. Van Bever nimmt
einige Veränderungen an der
Disposition vor: Clairon 4 tritt an
die Stelle von Cor 16' im Récit.
Die Ophicléïde 16' des Positif tritt
nun als 8' an die Stelle von Cor
anglais 8' im Grand-Orgue. Neben
Intonation und Reinigung
werden sämtliche Bälge und das
Récit überarbeitet. Montre 16' erhält
neue Condukte und das Positif
einen Barkerhebel.
Als der noch nicht vollendete
Bau des Kirchturms fortgesetzt
wird, muß die Orgel 1906 abgetragen
werden. Nach Fertigstellung
des Turms 1908 beschließt
man aus architektonischen
Gründen die Rosette freizulassen,
was eine Preisgabe des
prächtigen Schyven-Prospektes
bedeutet. Trotz dieses Verlustes
wird die Orgel unter Beibehaltung
der Windladen, des alten
Spieltisches und des alten Pfeifenbestandes
wieder installiert
mit neuer Windlade für das Positif,
das jetzt schwellbar ist und
zwei weitere Register erhält: Musette
8' und Unda maris 8'. Auf
dem Grand-Orgue weicht die
Trompette céleste 8' einer Quinte
5 1/3'. Die Registertraktur von
Récit und Positif erhalten pneumatische
Hilfe, Grand-Orgue
und Pédale bleiben weiterhin mechanisch.
Die größten Pfeifen des
Sous-Basse 32' werden an die
Rückwand der Seitenschiffe in
schmalen Gehäusen untergebracht,
um nicht die Rosette des
All stops were sampled
in Thirds. The true nature
and charakter of each pipe was
captured. Every single tone is 30
seconds long for the stops of the
manuals. The lenght of the pedaltones
is 60 seconds.
All tones are not looped in any
adding information to original
This release reverberation
This release reverberation
This idea was for the first time
ever used in SOS-1 "La Madeleine"
and there are good reasons
for getting this original reverb
again for SOS-2.
All instruments have
18 multisamples recorded in stereo
which can be played from C
up to c 4 . Some rare stops with
significant spectrums of their
overtones were captured chromatically.
Those instruments contain
Pierre Schyven 1874 /
Salomon van Bever 1912
by Peter Ewers - translated by Dana Müller
Like an arrow the Avenue de la
Reine points directly to the neogothic
L’eglise Royale Notre-Dame
de Laeken. The church,
initially designed by the architect,
Joseph Poelaert (1817- 1879),
as a royal tombsite, especially in
memory of the very popular Belgium
Queen, Louise Marie of
France, was erected in 1854 and
blessed in 1872. The church was
finally completed according to
newer plans in 1908. Since its
consecration, all of Belgium’s
monarchs have been buried in its
crypt
For this church the Belgium
government conmissioned a
great organ as early as 1870.
Pierre Schyven finally starts working
on the organ in Laeken from
1871 to 1874.
Under the name of P. Schyven
& Cie., Pierre Schyven, born in
Brussels in 1827 takes over the
famous organ workshop of Merklin-Schütze
together with Armand
and Jacques Verreyt.
Supported by François-Joseph
Fétis, the director of the Brussels
Conservatory, Joseph Merklin
and Friedrich Schütze had played
an important role in regenerating
organ construction in Belgium.
Merklin-Schütze had taken over
Ducroquet of Paris in 1855.
Charles-Spakman Barker was
their workshop master there until
1858. Pierre Schyven had been
with Merklin since 1843 and was
their workshop head in Brussels
since 1851. Instruments out of
the late Brusseler Merklin production
and early Schyven pieces
do not differ greatly. Despite
the fact that Cavaillé-Coll dreaded
Schyven´s Paris workshop it
is said that Cavaillé-Coll admired
Schyven´s Brusseler tradition.
Even though one cannot call
Schyven a Cavaillé-Coll immitation
he was dedicated to the
same organ manufacturing principles.
Next to the organ in the cathedral
in Antwerp, it is his greatest
work. The organ has 51 stops,
13 pedal-levers,the Grand-Orgue
and Récit have 2 Barkers levers
(wind pressure is 170 mm
20 SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles
Watercolumn) and a gigantic
neogothic organ chest. Alphonse
Mailly and Alexandre Guilmant
play the inaugurating concert in
1874. For this concert the later
especially recomposed his Symphony
I as an organ solo, dedicating
it to the attending King of
Belgium.
After cleaning and intonating
the organ in 1888 Schyven carries
out some repairs on its mechanics
and on the bellows. He
replaces the Récit and
Grand-Orgue Barker levers with
more precise ones. New Magazin
bellows with two places for
windmakers are installed and
wind pressure is reduced from
170 mm WC to 120 mm WC.
Pierre Schyven retires from the
firm 1905. As a business partner,
his son François (1856 - 1927),
had in the last 10 years incorporated
more and more industrial
production methods. François
keeps up the business to his death
without building any new instruments.
Maintenance of the organ is
transferred to Samuel van Bever
(1851 - 1916) in 1902. Together
with his brother Adrian (1837
- 1895) he had worked in the famous
Hippolyt Loret organ workshop.
He followed Loret when he
moved his workshop to Paris in
1866 and worked there until
1878. He perfected his craftsmanship
with Aristide Cavaillé-Coll,
whose concepts
continued to influence his entire
career. As of 1880 the van Bever
brothers take over the Loret workshop
and continue the tradition
in Laeken. Van Bever undertakes
several changes on the organ
disposition; in the Récit Clairon 4
replaces Cor 16’, the Positif
Ophiclëide 16’ now becomes 8’
and is exchanged for the Cor anglais
8’ in the Grand-Orgue. Besides
cleaning and intonating, all
the bellows are adjusted and the
Récit is revised. Montre 16’ receives
new conducts and the Positif
gets a new Barker lever.
In 1906 the organ had to be
dismantled to allow construction
of the church steeple to finish. After
the steeple was completed
1908, the church’s Rosette was
left visible for architectural reasons.
As a result, the ornamental
Schyven Prospect had to be eliminated.
Despite this loss, the organ
was installed with the
original windchests, console and
the old pipes. The Positif receives
new windchests and two additio-
nal registers; Musette 8’ and
Unda maris 8’.
A Quinte 5 1/3’ displaces the
Trompette Céleste of the
Grand-Orgue. The Récit and
Positif stoptracking are now
pneumatically supported, while
the Grand-Orgue and Pédale remain
mechanical. The large
Sous-Basse 32 pipes are installed
in narrow cabinets along the
back walls of the church aisles so
as not to obstruct views of the Rosette
in the nave. At the church’s
consecration May 10th, 1912
the organ was presented almost
as it is today.
After Salomon van Bever died
1916, his nephews, the Draps
brothers, took over the workshop
and the maintenance of the instrument.
Samuel Eyckmans
(1889 - 1978) followed later.
Patrick Collon of Brussels cautiously
restores the organ between
1975 and 1978. He exchanges
the Grand-Orgue pipe Quinte 5
1/3´ with a Doublett 2´ so that
the Organ stands out to today in
all its grandeur as the summit of
Belgium’s symphonic organ building.
Etiènne de Munck of
Sint-Niklaas has been responsible
for the organ’s maintenance
since 1994. He also tuned the instrument
for this recording.
La ligne droite de l'avenue de
l'église néo-gothique de Notre-Dame
de Laeken. C'est pour
abriter la crypte royale et en souvenir
de la première Reine des
Belges Louise-Marie de France
(1812-1850), très aimée de son
peuple, que cette église fut construite
en 1854 d'après des idées
de l'architecte Joseph Poelaert
(1817-1879), et consacrée en
1872. La crypte, achevée en
1908 d'après d'autres plans, abrite,
depuis sa consécration, les
tombeaux de tous les souverains
belges.
En 1870, l'état belge chargea
l'atelier renommé MerklinSchütze
de la construction d'un grand orgue.
Joseph Merklin et Friedrich
Schütze avaient joué un rôle significatif
dans le renouveau de la
facture d'orgue en Belgique. Ils y
bénéficièrent de l'appui de François-Joseph
Fétis, directeur du
Conservatoire de Bruxelles. En
1855, la compagnie parisienne
Ducroquet avait été reprise par
Merklin-Schütze. Charles-Spackman
Barker y avait été chef d'atelier
jusqu'en 1858.
Pierre Schyven, né à Bruxelles
en 1827, était entré au service de
Merklin en 1843 et devenu directeur
de son atelier bruxellois en
1851; il reprit l'atelier en collaboration
avec Armand et
le nom de P. Schyven & Cie. Les
ne diffèrent que très peu des derniers
instruments bruxellois de
Merklin. On dit que Cavaillé-Coll
appréciait beaucoup la
branche bruxelloise dirigée par
Schyven, contrairement à l'atelier
parisien, qu'il craignait. D'ailleurs,
L'instrument comporte 51
jeux, 13 pédales de combinaison,
deux machines Barker pour
le Grand-Orgue et le Récit (avec
un vent d'une pression de 170
mm !), ainsi qu'un gigantesque
buffet néo-gothique. Alphonse
Mailly et Alexandre Guilmant
donnèrent le concert d'inauguration
en novembre 1874. Ce dernier
composa, spécialement
pour la circonstance, la version
pour orgue seul de sa première
symphonie et la dédia au Roi belge,
présent à l'inauguration.
A l'occasion d'un nettoyage et
d'une réharmonisation, Schyven
procéda en 1888 à un entretien
de la mécanique et des sommiers.
Il remplaça les machines
Barker du Récit et du Grand-Orgue
par d'autres, plus précises.
On installa un nouveau réservoir
d'air avec deux soufflets d'alimentation,
et la pression fut
ramenée de 170 mm à 120 mm.
En 1905, Pierre Schyven se retira
de sa compagnie: depuis une
dizaine d'années, celle-ci avait
progressivement été transformée
par son fils et copropriétaire
François (1856-1927) en une
production industrielle d'instruments.
François poursuivit les affaires
jusqu'à sa mort, mais sans
construire de nouveaux instruments.
En 1902, l'entretien de l'orgue
fut confié à Salomon van Bever
(1851-1916). Avec son frère
Adrien (1837-1895), il avait auparavant
travaillé dans l'atelier
bien connu d'Hyppolite Loret.
Lors du transfert de ce dernier à
Paris, en 1866, van Bever l'avait
suivi et y avait travaillé jusqu'en
1878, perfectionnant également
ses connaissances auprès de Cavaillé-Coll,
dont les conceptions
allaient déterminer toute sa carrière
future. En 1880, les frères
van Bever avaient repris l'atelier
de Loret, poursuivant ses activités
à Laeken.
Van Bever modifia quelque
peu la composition : au Récit, un
Clairon 4' remplaça le Cor 16'.
L'Ophicléïde 16' du Positif, transformée
en 8', prit la place du Cor
anglais 8' au Grand-Orgue. Outre
une réharmonisation et un
nettoyage, on remania tous les
soufflets, ainsi que le Récit. La
Montre 16' reçut de nouveaux
conduits, et le Positif fut doté
d'une machine Barker.
En 1906, on poursuivit la construction
de la tour de l'église,
jusque là inachevée, ce qui nécessita
le démontage de l'orgue.
En 1908, à l'achèvement de la
tour, on décida, pour des raison
architecturales, de ne pas cacher
la rosace, ce qui entraîna le sacrifice
du magnifique buffet de
Schyven. Malgré cette perte, on
réinstalla l'orgue, en conservant
les sommiers, la console et la tuyauterie
d'origine. Au Positif, devenu
expressif, on ajouta un
nouveau sommier et deux nouveaux
jeux : Musette 8' et Unda
Maris 8'.
centrale. Lors de la réinauguration
du 10 mai 1912, l'instrument
se trouvait déjà presque dans
l'état d'aujourd'hui.
Balancing the instrument
Für die Aufnahme der Samples
wurde jedes Register einzeln
ausgesteuert. Nur so kann ein
tragbarer Rauschspannungsabstand
erreicht werden. Dabei
bleibt das Lautstärkeverhältnis für
alle Töne eines Registers erhalten.
Die Güte eines Instrumentes
liegt in der Abstimmung der einzelnen
Töne. Dabei wird nach
französisch-symphonischer Tradition
(insbesondere bei Aristide
Cavaillé-Coll) für die Labialregister
melodiebetont intoniert. Das
bedeutet, das jedes Register in
der Lage ist, sich selbst zu begleiten.
Ab Diskantlage steigen daher
die Lautstärkeverhältnisse
allmählich an. Anders bei den
Zungenstimmen. Hier ist der Verlauf
der Lautstärke umgekehrt. In
der Tiefe nimmt die Lautstärke zu
verlag peter ewers
und wird nach oben runder,
tragender Bestandteil des Gesamtklanges.
Denken Sie an Widors
Toccata: In der hohen Lage
erzeugen die Zungen wesentlich
mehr Brillianz als die Mixturen. In
der Tiefe hingegen stehen sie für
Kraft und Klarheit. Das oben wiedergegebene
Abbild der Lautstärkeverhältnisse
der Trompette
céleste 8' des Positif zeigt dies
sehr schön.
Ein ganz anderes Problem besteht
aufgrund der Aufnahme der
Einzelregistern aber darin, sämtliche
Register zueinander in das
richtige Verhältnis zu setzen. Zu
diesem Zweck habe ich in Laeken
bei unveränderter Pegelaussteuerung
im Manual einen
C-Dur-Grundakkord, bestehend
aus c', e' und g' in sämtlichen Registrierungen
eingespielt. Jede
dieser Registrierungen (mit ge-
sprochenen Registrieranweisungen)
liegt getrennt nach Werken
im Instrument Ratio&Ambience
vor. Auf diese Weise lassen sich
jetzt leicht alle notwendigen Lautstärkeverhältnisse
einstellen. Das
Pédale erhielt mit einem Ton c
ebenfalls für alle Registrierungen
eine entsprechende Referenz.
For this recording every single
stop got a different controlling of
the recording level. This is the
only possibility to get a smooth
headroom. So the original ratio
of volume of every tone in this
stop can be kept. The quality of
an instrument can be found in
this coordination. In the
french-symphonic tradition (esp.
by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll) every
stop is able to accompany itself.
From the trebles the volume rises
gradually. Just the opposite is
found for the reeds. The ratio of
the volume is invers. In the bass
SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles 49
verlag peter ewers
the volume rises and in the trebels
the sound gets more round
and basically part of the ensemblesound.
Think of Widor's Toccata:
In the high register the
reeds produce more brilliance
than the mixtures. In the bass the
reeds stands for power and clarity.
The above standing graphic
from the ratio of volume for the
Trompette céleste 8' from the Positif
shows this exactly.
But how to balance the stops
to one another? For this purpose
i played in Laeken without any
change in the controlling of the
recording level one single C
mayor-chord consisting of c', e'
and g' in every stop and combination.
Every of these registrations
(with spoken instructions)
are given separatly for every division
in the instrument Ratio&Ambience.
This way every ratio of
50 SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles
verlag peter ewers
volume can be easily choosen.
The Pédale got with a single
middle c just one reference point
too.
What will come next?
Sure, there will be SOS-3. I recorded
the historic Silbermann-Organ
in
Großhartmannsdorf, a little village
near Dresden with its nice
25-stop organ from 1746, every
tone, every stop and useful combinations.
And the adventure goes on. A
beautiful german romantic organ,
completely build in a great
swell-box was captured in true
4-channel-modus. Increasing the
stereobarrier to more than 5.1gives
us today. Keep in touch via
How to build couplers?
The organ of Notre-Dame de Laeken comes up with the french
tradition of couplers. The following couplers can be found:
Réunion
du Grand-Orgue au Pédalier (I-P)
du Positif au Pédalier (II-P)
du Récit au Pédalier (III-P)
du Récit au Grand-Orgue (III-I-8')
du Positif au Grand-Orgue (II-I-8')
du Récit au Positif (III-II-8')
du Grand-Orgue à l'octave grave (I-I-16')
As every pipe organ even Notre-Dame de Laeken gets its power
from the ability to couple the manuals together. We have to decide
the normal couplers as:
III-I-8' (pipes from Manual III are played from Manual I)
II-I-8' (Manual II is played from Manual I)
III-II-8' (Manual III is played from Manual II)
III-P-8' (pipes from Manual III are played from Pedal)
II-P-8' (Manual II is played from Pedal)
I-P-8' (Manual I is played from Pedal)
To these essential couplers you will find additional couplers which
will play one pipe in addition to the original. If you play a single c 2 on
the Great and Grand-Orgue à l'octave grave the c 1 can be additionally
heard.
In every instruments form SOS-2 you will find
__GO__SOS-2
__Positif__SOS-2
__Récit__SOS-2
__Pédale__SOS-2
which is not playable. This "instrument" is needed for to turn the
couplers in the sampler off.
If you start to use the Gigastudio for playing the samplers the follwoing
instruction could be helpful for making those couplers playable:
1.) Load the two parts of Grand Orgue (GO) to the first channel.
Now it should be playable from the first manual of your console (be
sure Manual 1 of your console uses Midi-Channel 1 for this).
SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles 55
verlag peter ewers
A usefull setting for the Gigastudio could be first to load the first
part of Grand-Orgue into the first channel, playable on the first Manual
of an envirement.
After that you load part-02 of Grand-Orgue on the same channel.
Now you can reach all the stops on channel 1 here the first manual
of the virtual Notre-Dame de Laeken-Organ. Now stops of the
Positif.
56 SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles
verlag peter ewers
2.) Load first part of Positif on channel 2. After that load part-02 of
the Positif. Now you have full access on the stops of the positif.
3.) Next is the Récit. Load both parts in channel 3.
4.) Now the Pédale. Load the only part on channel 4.
This setting can be found as SOS-2_without-couplers.gsp on the
installation CD or on the website.
Next step is to build the couplers.
5.) Go to channel 5 and in the Channel information mask click on
loaded instrument. Pick up the number 40 called __Récit__SOS-2.
SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles 57
verlag peter ewers
Now you made the couplers III-I-8'. If you see __Récit__SOS-2 in the
slot everything is fine, although you don't here a tone.
The coupler III-I is now ready to be used on channel 5.
6.) Go to channel 6, click in the Channel information mask on loaaded
instrument and load the number 40 called __Récit__SOS-2.
Be sure that your envirement or console's II. Manual will send Midi on
channel 2 and 6. It is not playable yet, but you created the coupler
III-II.
7.) Go to channel 7, click in the Channel information mask on
loaded instrument and load the number 40 called __Récit__SOS-2.
Be sure that your midi envirement can play channel 3 and 7 together.
You have to set you masterkeyboard playing the notes on channel 7
one octave lower. it is not playable yet, but then you created th coup-
ler III-III-16'. This coupler is not found in Notre-Dame de laeken, but
it is very useful.
8.) Go to channel 8, click in the Channel information mask on
loaded instrument and load the number 40 called __Récit__SOS-2.
Be sure that your midi envirement can play channel 1 and 8 together.
You have to set your masterkeyboard playing the notes on channel 8
one octave lower. It is not playable yet, but then you created the
coupler III-I-16'. This coupler is found in Notre-Dame de Laeken as
Réunion du Grand-Orgue à l'octave grave (I-I-16').
9.) Go to channel 9, click in the Channel information mask on
loaded instrument and load the number 23 called __Positif__SOS-2.
It is not playable yet, but you created the coupler II-I. Be sure that
your masterkeyboard can play channel 1 and 9 together.
10.) Now we create the tirasse, the pedal-Couplers. First go to
channel 10 and select in the Channel information panel the number
40. be sure your pedal can play on channel 4 and channel 10. This
is the cupler III-P.
11.) Got to channel 11. Select number 23 from the instrument
list. Be sure your keyboard can play on channel 3 and 11 together.
You just created the coupler II-P.
SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles 59
verlag peter ewers
12.) Last we create the couple I-P. You have to load in the channel
information window the number 0 called __GO__SOS-2. Be
sure that your masterkeyboard can play on channel 4 and 12 together.
Your setting looks as shown above. The recommendations were.
The first Manual gives the data to channel 5, 9
The second Manual gives the data to channel 2, 6
The third manual gives the data to channel 3, 7, 8
The pedal gives the data to channel 4, 10, 11, 12.
All these settings are given in the file
to set your mastercontroller to the
This is exactly the order in
which you now have access to the
instruments. Keep in mind that
some keyboard or mastercontroller
are sending programme
changes starting with zero. Then
you always have to add 1 to the
recent program-numbers.
Finetuning
As mentioned above the
sounds have to be balanced
now. Find out with the enclosed
files which volume you have to
give with the midi-order to change
the programme. If your master-keyboard-controller
is able to
hold these values you should
keep in mind that the reverb tail
which is given upon release-triggered
samples is still in the old
volume. Find out which volumes
are the best.
The character of the whole organ
is given in this information.
The tonal harmonization in classic
organbuilding is carried out
by craftsmen who are specialized
in this work. It requires great
knowledge and experience. This
way the colours of an organ are
changed into beauty. In the following
list you will find the order of
all instruments once again but
here I enclose the ratio which I regard
as fitting the best. Try and
make your own decisions!! This
ratio was used for demos. Because
some mastercontrollers start
with zero the given list reflects
this. For example: The instrument
in Gigastudio is called 1- your
master controller has to send 2 to
reach this sound.
Wie wird das Crescendo
auf einer symphonischen
Orgel ausgeführt?
Zwei Dinge sind für den Klang
einer Orgel charakteristisch:
• der große Tonumfang und
die große Dynamik.
Um diese Superlative des Instrumentenbaus
für den Verlauf
eines musikalischen Geschehens
nutzbar und wirkungsvoll zur
Geltung bringen zu können, haben
sich zu allen Zeiten fähige
Orgelbauer an Lösungen herangewagt.
Im Barock versuchte
man durch eine Terassendynamik
unterschiedliche Charaktere
und Lautstärkeverhältnisse darzustellen.
Auf zwei Klavieren
dient eines dazu die stärkeren
Klangfarben wiederzugeben.
Das zweite Klavier, auch Echoclavier
genannt, spielte mit einer
klanglich deutlich abgesetzen
Lautstärke, wie in einem Echo,
die entsprechenden Gegenpartien.
Der Interpret wird durch
schnelle Manualwechsel versuchen,
diesen Echoeffekt geschickt
zu nutzen.
Als zum Ende des Barock die
Musik empfindsamer wurde und
eine viel differenziertere Nuancierung
erforderte, wurden auf
einem weiteren separaten Klavier
Solostimmen zusammengefasst.
Diese Klaviatur erhielt den Namen
Récit und wurde schon rasch
mit einer Neuerung des Orgelbaus
verbunden: Dazu müssen
alle Pfeifen der Register dieses
Manuals in einem vollständig geschlossenen
Gehäuse stehen. Ein
man bei einer Fensterjalousie die
Viele haben den Eindruck vor der
aus der Kirche heraus zu hören.
Der ganze Orgelklang ist schon
da, man ahnt die kontrollierte
Klang einer symphonischen Orgel
etwas mystisches verleiht.
In der Folge wurden die
Schwellwerke allein von der Registeranzahl
immer größer und
stellten unter Aristide Cavaillé-Coll
neben dem Grand-Orgue
quasi das zweite Hauptwerk
der Orgel dar. Die vorhandene
Dynamik einer symphonischen
Orgel zeigt sich vor allem in der
Fähigkeit, die Kraft des Récit zu
kontrollieren. Ungenügend isolierte
Schwellwerke lassen diesen
Effekt verflachen. Im Tutti einer
Orgel läßt sich das Öffnen des
Schwellwerks als letzte Steigerung
noch deutlich wahrnehmen.
Meiner Erfahrung nach liegen
gute Dämpfungsgrade von effektiven
Schwellwerken bei 16 dB
SPL.
Der oben beschriebene Effekt
wird um eine technische Besonderheit
ergänzt. Alle Register der
verschiedenen Teilwerke einer
Orgel(Grand-Orgue, Positif, Récit,
Bombarde, Pédal etc.) stehen
auf zwei Laden verteilt. Auf der
Seite der Jeux des fonds stehen
die labialen Grundstimmen im
16', 8' und 4'-Bereich.
Auf der anderen Seite stehen
die Jeux des combinaison, die
höheren Labialregister, breite
Mixturen und die Gruppe der
Zungenregister (Anches). Diese
beiden Gruppen von Registern
sind auf allen Teilwerken der Orgel
vertreten und können durch
Einführungstritte, sogenannte
Appels während des Spiels zugeschaltet
werden. Die Einführungstritte
sind im eigentlichen
Sinne Windsperrventile die stets
einem ganzen Ensemble Wind
zur Verfügung stellen.
Die charakteristische Dynamik
einer symphonischen Orgel geschieht
in folgenden Schritten.
1.) Alle Register werden gezogen
(stets ohne Voix céleste und
ohne Voix humaine), die Manuale
sind gekoppelt. Die Register
der jeux des combinaison erhalten
noch keinen Wind, sie sind
noch nicht zu hören. Diese Registrierung
nennt sich Grand fonds,
auf allen Manualen hört man
jetzt das Grundstimmenensemble.
2.) Bei geschlossenem
Schweller des Récit wird der Einführungstritt
Jeux des combinaison
des Récit eingehakt. Das
Récit erklingt nun mit allen Registern,
das Schwellwerk ist aber
SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles 71
weiter geschlossen. Um eine fast
unbemerkte Klangverschmelzung
mit dem gekoppelten Grand-Orgue
und Positif zu ermöglichen,
läßt sich das Crescendo sehr eindrucksvoll
vom Grand-Orgue
aus durchführen.
3.) Allmählich öffnet sich nun
das Schwellwerk, der Klang wird
immer mächtiger. Für dieses sehr
eindrucksvolle Balanceverhältnis
steht die Registrieranweisung
Demi-Grand Choeur.
4.) Die nächste Ebene im dynamischen
Verlauf erreicht man
durch den Einführungstritt jeux
des combinaison für das Positif.
5.) Danach wird der Positifschweller
geöffnet.
72 SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles
verlag peter ewers
6.) Es folgt der Einführungstritt
für die jeux des combinaison des
Grand-Orgue und anschließend
7.) der Einführungstritt für die
jeux des combinaison des Pédale.
Diese Registrierung nennt sich
Grand Choeur.
8.) An einigen Instrumenten
läßt sich durch die Oktavkoppeln
die Klangkraft erheblich steigern
(Tutti).
Bedingt durch die Ästhetik der
einzelnen Ensemble-Gruppen
(Labialregister melodiebetont intoniert,
Zungenregister in der Tiefe
sehr kräftig nach oben hin eher
rund) ist das Tutti einer symphonischen
Orgel niemals erschlagend
kraftvoll und stets von Noblesse
gekennzeichnet. Der Klang ist in
der Tiefe nie plump oder auf-
dringlich und durch die weiten
Mixturen ist er in der Höhe nie
schneidend oder scharf. Das Tutti
einer Cavaillé-Coll-Orgel ist derartig
ausgeglichen, dass selbst
100 Jahre nach Cavaillé-Colls
Prinzipien nachzufolgen versuchen
Für SOS-2 gelten exact die
oben beschriebenen Grundsätze.
Die Orgel von Notre-Dame de
Laeken steht einer Cavaillé in
Nichts nach.
Das Récit in Laeken hat nach
meiner Auffassung jedoch nicht
die Vollkommenheit wie das Récit
von Saint-Sulpice oder Notre-Dame
in Paris. Für die Realisation
von SOS-2 blieb dies
jedoch ohne Belang, da zur Zeit
alle verfügbaren Samplerkonfi-
gurationen besonders mit der
Dynamik einer symphonischen
Orgel an die technischen Grenzen
stoßen. Die Dynamik der
Sampler selbst würde zwar in jedem
Fall ausreichen, die Probleme
liegen jedoch auf einer
tieferen Ebene.
Um einen stufenlosen Verlauf
der Dynmik mit einem Instrument
abbilden zu können, müssen von
jeder denkbaren Stufe der Dynamik
einzelne Samples aufgenommen
werden. Das läßt sich leicht
realisieren. Die heute gebräuchlichen
Flügelsamples der einschlägigen
Klangbibliotheken
greifen z.B. auf bis zu 8 verschiedene
Lautstärkestufen zurück.
Auch wenn Arthur Rubinstein
ganze 70 Lautstärkedifferenzierungen
nachgesagt werden und
folglich noch einiges an Samplearbeit
zu tun übrig bleibt, be-
schreibt dies das Problem nur in
eine Richtung. Der Klavierklang
hat eine extrem kurze Einschwingphase
um dann entsprechend
charakteristisch
auszuklingen. Die Einschwingphase
eines Orgeltons ist
da ähnlich kurz, zumal bei einer
ausintonierten Orgel die Arbeitspunkte
der Pfeifen in der Regel
sehr gut getroffen werden. Was
aber, wenn der Klang eines Register
anschließend wächst? Es
ändert sich nicht nur die reine
Lautstärke. Auch die Klangfarbe
ändert sich. Bei niedrigen Lautstärken
werden durch ein gutes
Récit stärker die hohen Teilfrequenzen
durch die Gehäusewandung
und eine Dämmung
absorbiert. Dieses Phänomen ist
mit einem Mulitsample nur bedingt
zu beheben.
Aufgrund dieser Komplexität
How to perform a
crescendo on a symphonic
organ?
Two things are characteristical
for the sound of an organ:
- the great range
- the great dynamic
In order to show this superlative
of building instruments for the
process of any musical
performance to its best
advantage able organbuilders
always have ventured near
solutions. In the era of the
baroque one tried to show
different characters and ratio of
volumes with the
Terrassendynamik (terraced
dynamic). From two manuals one
is used to give the stronger tone
colour. The second manual, also
called Echoclavier, is played with
a tonal distincted volume, like an
echo, the corresponding
counterparts. The interpreter will
try to use this echoeffect by quick
changes of the manuals. When at
the end of the era of the baroque
music became more sensitive
and a much more differentiated
nuanciation was required the
solostops were summarized on a
further separate manual. This
manual was called Récit and
soon was combined with an
invention of organbuilding: all of
the pipes of the stops of this
division have to be built in a
single chest, which is totally
closed. One part of the walls of
this chest can be opened and
closed by a movement of the
organplayer with the so called
Balanciers. Like a Venetian blind
with its slats which you can open
to let more light into the room the
organplayer can open the slats of
the swell using the balanciers and
the sound floods the nave with
increasing power. When the swell
is closed the sound of the chosen
stops is audible as if it came from
a far distance. Many people get
the impression to stand in front of
the church hearing the organ
from within. The complete sound
is there. One can guess the
controlled power of the sound
but only the opening of the swell
makes this power increase. Really
an incomparable effect which
76 SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles
verlag peter ewers
adds something mystical to the
sound of a symphonic organ.
As a consequence the swell
became greater even with regard
to the quantity of the stops and
with Aristide Cavaillé-Coll the
swell became the second main
division of an organ beside the
Grand-Orgue. The existing
dynamics of a symphonic organ
reveals itself in the ability to
control the power of the Récit.
Insufficently insulated swellboxes
make this effect flatten. In the tutti
of an organ the opening of the
swell is clearly audible. In my
experience the dampingrates of
effective swells are up to 16 dB
SPL. The above standing effect is
completed with a special
technical feature. All stops of one
division (Grand-Orgue, Positif,
Récit, Bombarde, Pédale) are
standing on two windchests. On
the one side you find the labial
jeux des fonds of 16’, 8’ and 4’.
On the other side you will find the
jeux des combinaison, the higher
labial stops, wide mixtures and
the group of the reeds (Anches).
These two groups of stops are
given on every division and you
can add these stops using the
Appels while playing. The appels
are actually pallets for the wind
which give a huge ensemble
wind. The characteristical
dynamic of a symphonic organ
follows this structure.
1.) Every stop is thrown (every
time without Voix céleste and
Voix humaines), the manuals are
coupled. The stops of the jeux
des combinaison get no wind.
The Appels are not fastened. The
jeux des combinaison have no
wind, they are not audible yet.
This registration is called Grand
fonds and the fact of the drawn
stops of the jeux des combinaison
is called “Anches preparé”.
2.) With the slats of the swell
closed the appell Récit - Jeux des
combinaison is fastenend. The
Récit sounds with all stops but it is
still closed.
To get a nearly inaudible melting
of the sounds from the swell
with the Positif and the
Grand-Orgue the crescendo is
impressive if played from the
Grand-Orgue.
3.) Continually the swell is
now opened. The sound becomes
more and more powerful.
For this impressive relation the
suggestion Demi-Grand Choeur
stands for.
4.) The next level within the dynamic
progress is reached when
drawing the appell Positif – Jeux
des combinaison.
5.) After that the slats of the
Positif are opened.
6.) Next the appell Grand-Orgue
– Jeux des combinaison is
drawn followed by
7.) the Appell Pédale – Jeux
des combinaison. This registration
is called Grand Choeur.
8.) On some instruments the
power can be maximized with the
octav-couplers reaching the Tutti.
Due to the aethetics of the different
ensemble groups (the labial
stops are harmonized with
focus on melody, reeds are in the
bass very strong towards the higher
regions rather round) the Tutti
78 SOS-2: Notre-Dame de Laeken, Bruxelles
verlag peter ewers
of a symphonic organ is never
beating or simply loud. It is more
powerful and always signed by
noblesse. The sound in the bass
regions is never plump, massive
or importunate and due to the
wide mixtures it is in the higher region
never biting or sharp. The
Tutti of a Cavaillé-Coll-Organ is
balanced in such a way that even
100 years after Cavaillé-Coll’s
death able organbuilders try to
follow this principles – more or
less successfully.
For SOS-2 these given rules
are valid exactly. The organ of
Notre-Dame de Laeken, Brussels
is in no way inferior to a Cavaillé.
But the Récit of Laeken has in
my opinion not the perfection of
the Récit from Saint-Sulpice or
Notre-Dame, Paris. For the reali-
sation of SOS-2 this fact was of
no importance because at the
moment all available configurations
of samplers reach the technical
limits especially with the
dynamic of a symphonic organ.
The dynamic of the samplers itself
would be sufficient but the
problems are on a lower level:
To go continuously in the development
of dynamic with one
instrument one has to take single
samples from every possible level.
This is easy to be realized.
The known sample libraries from
grand pianos for instance use up
to 8 different volumes. Even
though Arthur Rubinstein is said
to have had all of 70 differentiations
of volume and consequently
there is still a lot of sample work
to do, this only describes the problem
from one angle. The sound
of the piano has got an extreme
short attack phase after which it
dies away in the same characteristic
way. The attack phase of an
organ sound is similarly short,
especially since with an fully intonated
organ the working points
of the pipes are normally well hit.
But what is to be done when
the sound of a stop is increasing
afterwards? Not only the volume
is changing but also the tone colour.
With low volumes the higher
frequencies of a good Récit are
absorbed in a higher degree by
the walls of the chest and the
damping. This phenomenon can
only partly be remedied with a
multisample. The opening of the
swell can take place quickly or
continually. It is an extremely
subtle device of the interpreter
and such an individual one that
even an umpteenth multisampler
would not come close to the uni-
que sound. Because of this complexity
SOS-2 refrains from the
recording of dynamic multisamples
for the Récit. In my opinion
multisamples as pure changes of
volume do not make much sense,
because they are to be achieved
by controllers anyway. Here
the limit of what is feasible is clearly
reached – at any rate for the
moment being. If you have made
any experiences on this field, simply
let me know. I would be happy
to be able to offer dynamic
multisamples for one of the following
sound libraries.
