Aiming to enhance the productivity of their employees, Star Cruises and Resorts World
With a degree in Hotel Management from Germany
and an unparalleled international culinary experience, Chef
Frank continues to inspire and set the mark for excellence in
European and Caribbean cuisines.

I ’ ve made a good investment being at Genting-Star Tourism
Academy. The Academy has taught me how to meet and exceed
expectations of guests, shake their hands, handle guest com-
plaints with magical eyes and smile, and a lot more. Others might
say that these skills are so basic. But for me, GSTA, together
with my professors, has given me a great foundation that has been
guiding me in my career.
Genting-Star Tourism Academy has equipped me for a work onboard. The
Academy has provided the necessary information and skills which have helped
me to adjust easily in my life at sea. All the polishing to be a good hotel staff
member was provided by GSTA. All the basic information that I learned from
my course played a vital role when I was starting. The best thing that GSTA has
done is that it has opened the window of opportunity for me. Thank you, GSTA.
GSTA has helped me become competitive in my work. The learning that I have
had from the instructors has given me what I need to excel in my current work.
GSTA has also helped me develop the three essential things to become a suc-
cessful person: skills, knowledge and attitude.
I won't forget GSTA because it has defined what I wanted to achieve. I ’
ve been given an offer from 2 five-star hotels, namely, Wyndham Grand
Regency and La Cigale Hotel. Among offers, I have chosen to work for
Edarat Hospitality and Leisure Services. I am applying my telephone and e
-mail skills, working with diverse cultures, and processing reservations. I
would like to thank Genting-Star Tourism Academy for the quality training
and experiences I gained. With GSTA, I have discovered my potentials
and established my goals.
GSTA has helped me so much in my career because it has taught me so-
cial skills that I need to be with people. I ’ ve learned general knowledge
and developed some common sense to make the right decisions. I ’ m
very thankful to be a part of the GSTA family.

GSTA-I aims to prepare professionals for
for GSTA.

With the growth of the hospitality and tourism industry comes an increased
number of students taking Hotel and Restaurant Management ( HRM ) and
Tourism courses. Any HRM and Tourism program will never be complete
without an exposure of the trainees to actual hospitality and tourism venues.
Field trips and educational tours are great opportunities for students to appre-
ciate industry practices and to gain insights on how theories learned in school
are applied.
Genting-Star Tourism Academy, manned by seasoned trainers who
have been previously industry practitioners, has been catering to the expo-
sure needs of the country’ s Hotel and Tourism Management schools. Some
of these schools are Far Eastern University, Batangas State University,
University of Negros Occidental, Jose Rizal University, Meycauayan College,
Roosevelt College, Sienna College, La Fortuna College, Malayan College,
First Asia Institute of Technology, La Consolacion College, Centro Escolar
University, World Citi Colleges, General de Jesus College, and De La Salle
University Dasmarinas.
Some of the topics that the Academy delivers include Front Office
Services, Customer Service, Cruise Line Operations, Principles of Cleaning
and Housekeeping Services, Basic Beverage Knowledge, Sequence of Ser-
vice and Basic Methods of Cooking, among others. After the lecture, students
would get the chance to see the top-of-the-line facilities of GSTA.
Part of the Academy ’ s activities in making students competitive globally is to
enhance their confidence in public speaking. Since 2010, Front Office stu-
dents of GSTA have been actively participating in educational tours of Hotel
and Restaurant and Tourism students from in and out of Metro Manila. GSTA
trainees discuss Front Office Procedures and share their learned techniques
in dealing with different types of guests. Front Office Sr. Program Tutor
Avema Silva says, “ This is one aspect of their training that these trainees
look forward to, as it is an experience that will bring them out of their comfort
zones and push their communication skills to a higher level. ”

Seasoned trainers of GSTA graced various seminars of different universities, col-
leges and government institutions as guest speakers in the field of hospitality and
tourism.
Senior Program Tutor Avema Silva, for instance, was invited to discuss
“ H ospitality Management Education: A Driver of a More Fun in the Philippines” with
800 HRM and Tourism students of Batangas State University ( BSU ) during its
HRM and Tourism Convention on Oct 18, 2012. In the same program, AVP-Training
Rufino Abad introduced to the students hospitality career opportunities via good training
in GSTA. A day after, Ms. Silva, with Business Development Officer Christian
Matro, talked about “ Hospitality Statistics and Prospects ” during a career orientation
at Centro Escolar University, Manila.
During the first-ever South Cotabato Tourism Summit conducted on Nov 15-
16,. 2012 at Koronadal, South Cotabato, Mr. Reinhurt Rentoza ( Director of Studies
) served as guest speaker and talked about “ Customer Service Excellence in
the Tourism Industry. ” . In attendance were 300 participants which included top officials
of the Provincial Tourism Council, Culture and the Arts, Local Government Units,
business entrepreneurs, HRM/Tourism faculty members, representatives of vocational
schools and students.
Senior Program Manager Jun Sajonas , on the other hand, brought his piece
to the Pasay City Division Office of the Department of Education ( DepEd ) when he
delivered “ Personality Development: A Role of Teachers in Enhancing Students ’
Subject Performance ” to 35 DepEd Division Heads on Nov 23, 2012. Prior to that,
Mr. Sajonas served as speaker on Hotel and Cruise Line Career Opportunities during
the 13 th Regional Business Expo held in St. Paul University Tuguegarao on Sept 20,
2012 and attended by 200 students and faculty members from different universities
and colleges in Region 2. On Nov 18, he also gave 115 graduating students from St.
Louis College in La Union a talk about personality enhancement, etiquette, and interview
handling techniques. In all occasions, he emphasized that students should add
value to their education by getting further training in GSTA in lieu of internship or as a
specialization.
AVP- Training Rufino Abad talked about “ National Lecture Series: Hospitality
at its Best ” in Holy Angel University on March 2, 2012. He also conducted a career
talk for 120 students on Aug 22, 2012 in Sacred Heart Academy, Pasay City. Senior
Program Tutor Joan Ruales, on the other hand, talked about “ Housekeeping Operations
in the Hospitality Industry & Its Challenges ” at the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines on Aug 20, 2012. On Sept 15, 2012, Program Manager ( Corporate
Training ) Maria Fe Tatsayanonchai gave a lecture on “ Opportunities in Cruise Industry
” before 500 University of Sto. Tomas students and faculty members assembling
at Le Pavilion, Pasay City. Early this year, Senior Culinary Program Manager
Chef Jake Enriquez, together with Food and Beverage Program Manager Susan Tan
and Mr. Matro attended another University of Sto. Tomas-led event at Oceana Restaurant
( Mall of Asia ) . Chef Jake discussed ” The Life and Work Onboard Cruise
Ships. ”
Aside from being speakers, GSTA trainers have also been invited by TESDA
to serve as lead program accreditation inspectors for the opening of new programs of
other training centers in Metro Manila. Lately, Chef Raul joined the TESDA team of
inspectors to accredit a newly-established training school offering Bread and Pastry
and Commercial Cooking courses. Ms. Silva likewise served as lead inspector in the
accreditation of a Front Office program of one school in Makati.
Being invited as a guest speaker or accreditor / inspector paves the way for
the trainers to share their expertise and represent GSTA positively. Noting this trend,
Sr. Program Manager Jun Sajonas said, “ GSTA is increasingly becoming a popular
source of resource speakers and lead program inspectors. This is not surprising--
GSTA has indeed a formidable pool of industry-seasoned trainers. ”

Alumni Homecoming! Some graduates
from Batch 1 ( 2006 ) to Batch 10
with. Former Director Cheng Foong Sim
( n ow SVP for Star Cruises Hotel
Christmas at Paulaner!
Students enjoyed shopping after their training session
in Paulaner.
Since 2006, “ Baolaina Restaurants and Cater-
students ’ on-the-job training.
Learning and Exposure! Students have
been exposed to international events in
different Shanghai high-end restaurants
such as Paulaner Brauhaus Shanghai.
Exposures like this are a regular co-
curricular activities of the students in the
Genting-Star International Cruise Man-
agement Program. This is to enhance
their customer and communication abili-
ties useful in their future work-
places.

He enters inconspicuously. He greets with a low-profile personality. He is generally quiet. But behind
his humility and non-overbearing personality is a man you wouldn ’ t like to hack off the organizational
chart. He is the Country Head of the Philippine Operations of Star Cruises—Michael Hackman.
A person with a vast experience in gaming and hospitality, Mr. Hackman commenced in the tourism and
leisure industry in 1978 at Australia ’ s first casino, Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Tasmania. After some time as a pilot
with the Royal Australian Air Force, he returned to the tourism industry and went on to be a part of the opening teams
at large and complex hotel/casino projects, including the Burswood Resort in Perth and the Adelaide Casino, both
managed at the time by Genting.
After leaving the Adelaide Casino and serving as Casino Marketing Executive for Conrad Hilton hotels, he
founded his own gaming management company, Admirals Casinos, with gaming contracts on P&O Cruises, NCL and
TT-Line cruise shipping. He also worked on several lottery game projects for governments in Australia, Asia and East-
ern Europe.
In his current position as Senior Vice President of Star Cruises and Country Head for the Philippines, he
oversees approximately 450 staff conducting support functions in the Star Cruises Centre in Pasay City. Those func-
tions include Crisis Management, I.T., Membership and Promotions, Contact Centre operations and Support and Ser-
vices staff working in the Genting Club at Resorts World Manila. He is also responsible for our fleet of private jets,
Marketing Communications and the rollout of the Genting Star budget hotel chain in the Philippines, with the first prop-
erty to be built in Boracay in the next year or two.
In every interaction with his constituents from the different departments, Mr. Hackman seems to leave a
positive imprint. AVP for HR Dominic Villanueva observes, “ He provides a reassuring atmosphere that things are
going well and we are going to resolve all odds along the way. He is a ready-to-listen leader who is hard-working and
hands-on. ” Aepple Venezuela, Mr. Hackman ’ s executive office coordinator, adds, “ He is a role model who always recognizes the accom-
plishments of his staff, no matter how small they may be. He is a very approachable and generous man. ”
Mr. Hackman also has a representative role the significant investments made by Genting HK in the Philippines, including Resorts
World Manila, the coming Bayshore development and the Boracay Newport development. Among his responsibilities are the Genting-Star
Tourism Academies, with campuses in Manila, Shanghai, Jakarta and hopefully in Guangzhou.
“ H e is a role
model who always
recognizes the
accomplishments of
his staff, no matter
how small they may
be. He is a very
approachable and
generous man. ”
Academically, Michael has a Masters degree in Politics and Public Policy from Macquarie University in
Sydney and a Graduate Diploma in Management from the Australian Graduate School of Management at the Uni-
versity of New South Wales. As a community service, he is a current serving Director of the Royal Flying Doctor
Service, Australia ’ s largest and best known charity, where he has been bestowed “ Life Member ” for services to
