2003 Grants in Aid of Research, American Society of Mammalogists
2002 Travel Award to present at the American Society of Mammalogists National Meeting New
Orleans, LA.
COLLABORATIONS
1. Drs. Thure Cerling, Jim Ehleringer, University of Utah, John Harris, Page Museum, Los Angeles.
We are investigating whether major extinctions of mammals were caused by a change in
photosynthetic pathways in plants mediated by changes in atmospheric CO2. We supervised 2
postdoctoral fellows (Ayliffe, Sponheimer) on this project.
2. Dr. Greg Lamb, Pharmacology and Toxicology Department, University of Utah. We are conducting a
molecular toxicology study on specialist and generalist woodrats and lab rats. We are measuring
mRNAs involved in detoxification of plant secondary compounds. Our preliminary results indicate
that specialist woodrats have significantly higher mRNAs for quinone reductase and significantly
lower levels of mRNA for glucuronotransferase (UGT2B1) than lab rats.
3. Drs. Steve St. Joer, Microbiology Department, University of Nevada, Reno; Fred Adler, Thomas
Cova, University of Utah. We are investigating the prevalence of Sin Nombre hantavirus in a rodent
community in the Great Basin. Our data suggest that habitat
disturbance alters the prevalence of SNV in the host species and may facilitate transmission to
secondary host species such as woodrats.
4. Dr. Jose Fredriani, Estacion Biologica de Donana, Avda Maria Luisa, Spain. I am collaborating with
Dr. Fedriani on the detoxification capacities of the field mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus. Dr. Fedriani
visited my laboratory in February 2004 to learn the techniques we use with the woodrat system. In
May 2005, my postdoctoral fellow, Dr. Michele Skopec visited his lab to assist with fieldwork.
5. Drs. Ido Izaki, University of Haifa, Oranim, Israel, Arad Zeev, Technion, Israel Institute of
Technology, Israel, William Karasov, University of Wisconsin Madison. We have a BSF grant to
study the ecological role of secondary metabolites in fruits.
