From the President’s Desk...
In my first Kol Emanu-El President’s message, I explained how I was originally greeted with
“Mazel Tov,” “Condolences,” “Are you crazy?” and “What were you thinking?” This, of
course, referred to my becoming President of Temple Emanu-El. At the end of my message
I explained that it is “Mazel Tov” and “I’m not crazy.” In spite of some of the Olympic-style
Temple gymnastics I participated in this summer, I still feel that way today.
Happy New Year and L’Shana Tova.
The past 4 months have been busy and challenging. Allow me to update you on the important
issues facing the Temple:
1) Construction: The “new” Levin Hall is in the final stages of completion. There are no longer any low-corner ceilings
and we reduced the number of unsightly columns from nine to two. Every inch of the room from floor to ceiling is
new and a state-of-the-art audio/visual system is being installed. The kitchen is being renovated with a more
functional and modern appeal. The Kramer Library is being brought upstairs and will become part of the upper
lounge. This will have great appeal as a quiet place, as well as being used for small meetings. This move has allowed
the downstairs space to be freed up for our ever-expanding youth group to have their own new Youth Lounge. The
hallway from Levin Hall to the sanctuary is being redecorated as well. The Rothman Religious School restrooms are
completely new. This is the good news. The not-so-good news is that we don’t expect our Certificate of Occupancy
for Levin Hall & Kitchen until the end of September. As you know, dealing with the Building Department is no easy feat.
2) Abraham Garden: Last year we purchased 50 feet of property adjacent to the Temple. Shortly thereafter, Danny &
Ewa Abraham donated an additional 150 feet to create the Dan and Ewa Abraham Garden. Not knowing our exact
plans, we decided to clear out the overgrown weeds, dead trees and remnants from over ten years ago when houses
occupied that property. It was an eye sore for the past 10 years. We cleared it, added privacy hedging, moved and
added some trees, installed a sprinkler system and laid beautiful sod. This is how the property sits right now.
Although we still don’t know exactly how we plan to use the Abraham Garden, we are certain that our Welcome
Back BBQ for the children from our religious school, youth group and other interested new families should be held
there. In addition, we should have our Sukkot dinners in the Sukkah there. We will pour a concrete foundation, erect
a pergola-type structure, dress it up, and this can be the venue for Sukkot and other gatherings for the Temple, including
perhaps some outdoor wedding ceremonies. We know that the Rabbi and teachers will be able to do some
teaching outside in the cooler weather, as well. We will also install a meandering path through the Garden with
benches along the way. We have some other simple ideas to make the grounds beautiful and practical for all.
As you have read, there are a very few disgruntled neighbors who have protested any use of the Abraham Garden. As
in all communities and towns, there are certain ordinances regulating sound and light and we intend to follow them. We
plan to be the same good neighbor we have been for the past several decades. Our Temple is working with the Town
Council, Mayor and staff to work out a satisfactory agreement that meets our needs while addressing the concerns of
our neighbors. Our Temple has certain rights and protections under the law and we plan to adhere to those laws. On
October 10th, we will once again appear before the Town Council for final decisions on the use of the Garden and to
address an outrageous claim made regarding the number of seats in our sanctuary. The sanctuary has been in its
current form with 542 seats since the last renovation in 1995. Much of this is complicated and has been exacerbated
by one particular neighbor. As Martin Luther King, Jr. famously said, “We shall overcome.” Both the Garden issue and
the seating issue will be heard during the Town Council meeting on October 10th and a positive result will be achieved.
MY 1st WISH FOR THE NEW YEAR…to be a closer Temple community with more participation. There is so much
happening here religiously, spiritually, and socially. For example, on November 15th we will have “Game Night,” with
activities such as poker, canasta, Mah Jongg and yes, the Miami Dolphins play Thursday Night Football. We will also introduce
Movie Night. Levin Hall is wired with state-of-the-art equipment and will be a perfect setting for these events.
We could use more committee help. Please just call and ask.
My 2nd WISH FOR THE NEW YEAR…to have 100% participation in Campaign 50 at any level. We have proudly raised
$3,600,000. But we have heard from only 35% of the membership. It is true that new carpet and decor do not make
a congregation. I understand it is NOT simply “build it and they will come.” With our inspiring clergy and dynamic
programs both religious and social, our Shul will continue to be a place we can be proud of for generations to come.
This brings me to my next point. This Campaign is not just about our funds today. We have received written commitments
from members to name Temple Emanu-El in their wills and estate plans. Some members have given today and
made a testamentary gift as well, thereby combining those two gifts for recognition on our Honor Board. We have no
Building Fund. There have been no major campaigns since 1994/1995. Don’t “give until it hurts.”
Give until it feels good. Gifts are payable for up to five years.
I am honored to be your President. I respect immensely the work done by the Temple’s prior
leadership dating back almost 50 years. In addition, past Temple leaders, as well as non-members,
have pitched in and worked tirelessly with the Town on the issues mentioned above. Temple
Emanu-El must be able to not only survive, but thrive. I hope that in this New Year you will consider
coming to Shul more often and getting more
A MESSAGE
FROM THE RABBI...
“Most of us”, said a Hasidic teacher, “call upon God
only when we are in trouble and make all sorts of
vows if only God will assist us. Afterwards, we forget
them.
We are very much like the wealthy person who, while eating fish,
choked upon a bone. Fortunately the doctor, who was quickly
summoned, was able to remove the bone just as the wealthy person
was on the point of death.”
‘Doctor,’ the man declared, ‘You saved my life; how can I ever repay you?’
The wise physician replied, ‘Just give me half of what you would have
paid when the bone was still stuck in your throat!’
Hasidic Tale
Being alive is the greatest gift there is. Yet, how often do we take
each day for granted? We assume that today will be followed by
countless other days. We never imagine that this day– God forbid
– might be the day that the “bone” gets stuck in our throat.
In Psalm 90:12 - we ask God to "teach us to number our days so we
may gain a heart of wisdom.” The Psalmist is asking us to always
remember that each day is infinitely precious and one of only a
limited number granted to us. A day is never to be wasted.
Therefore, as the New Year begins, I ask you to eat your fish with
care. May we wake up each morning filled with appreciation and
purpose, always asking ourselves the question: "How am I going to
live this day more fully?"
Shana Tova U’Metukah.
Wishing you and yours a sweet and healthy New Year,
Rabbi Michael Resnick
50th Anniversary Gala Dinner and dance in our magnificent
Steve Levin 1997-2000
Marvin Rosen 2001-2004
Gladys R. Jacobson 2004-2007
Ron Schram 2007-2011
This promises to be the highlight of the many events being planned
for our year long celebration as we pay tribute to the presidents
who have contributed greatly to the status our Temple enjoys
today.
EDITOR’S NOTE
There are so many new things at Temple
Emanu-El with which we will greet the new
year!
It's hard to assess which of the new things
is most important! New social hall, new
library, new garden, new chapel! Although
not everything will be ready for occupancy by Rosh
Hashanah, all of these projects are nearing completion in
time for major dedication celebrations that are detailed in
this issue of Kol Emanu-El.
We have welcomed a new religious school principal and
youth/family activities leader, Alissa Frankel. She has been
working hard through the summer to make sure activities
are planned and teachers are ready for the new school year.
As families return from summer activities to resume
"normal" life here in Palm Beach County, Temple Emanu-El is
preparing for the High Holy Days: Selichot, Rosh Hashanah,
special dinners, Yom Kippur, and then Sukkot, Hoshanah
Rabbah, Shemini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah. This season of
new beginnings allows us to resolve to live differently, better
than previously. Repairing the world (Tikkun Olam) begins
with each one of us working hard to repair our relationships
and to re-evaluate our priorities. Perhaps we should resolve
to take a class in the Temple's adult education program, or to
attend the morning minyan on Mondays and Thursdays at
least once each month. (Imagine having to say kaddish for a
loved one and not having ten people at the minyan to allow
you to do so. This has happened several times; we should
not let it happen again.) Offer to bring food to the home of
a mourner; visit a sick friend or even someone you don't
know who is in the hospital. Invite someone who is new to
the synagogue for a Shabbat meal at your home. All of these
things are the traditional hallmarks of traditional Jewish
communities. The mitzvot of Gemilut Hasadim were always
intended to be a way to show others that they are not alone,
that they are part of a caring community. Try doing one of
these mitzvot and see how it feels!
I want to wish you and your loved ones a Shanah Tovah u
Metukah -- a sweet and happy New Year!
Rejoice in the Torah!
Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at 9:15am
Join Temple Emanu-El in honoring our
Hatan Torah & Kallat Breisheet,
Harold & Helen Bix, on Simchat Torah morning.
*Kiddush Sponsored
by Helen & Harold Bix.
The past year, 5772, was a prelude to the real thing----our Temple’s 50th anniversary of its founding in Palm Beach. It was a busy year
during which we launched Campaign 50 to build on the past and to prepare for the future. It is an exciting time in the history of our
congregation.
Well over 100 of our members have responded generously and they are listed in the Honor Roll below. Their commitments have
allowed us to proceed with the renovation of the Levin Hall and the beautiful result will be there for all to enjoy. Other changes are
underway which will make our physical facilities a home of which we can all be proud. Coupled with this beautification and modernization
we are initiating new programs and religious services to excite our members and to attract new families and to make Temple
Emanu-El a world-class center for Jewish learning and Jewish activities.
To realize our vision we ask that those who have not yet made a commitment to do so. For those who have, your Temple leadership
thanks you and asks that you consider upgrading your donation to the next higher honor category.
Elsewhere in this issue you will read of the many events which are planned for our anniversary year, 5773. So let the celebrations
begin and Campaign 50 continue.
Have you ever been to a psychodrama?
The Center for Group Counseling is
coming to Temple Emanu-El!
Psychodrama is a fun way to combine theater and psychology
in an interactive examination of relationships. The Women's
League will be hosting Mothers-in-Law and Daughters-in-Law
and Other In-Laws and Outlaws. The drama focuses on
situations to which we can all relate --relationships between
women and the men they love, as well as other in-law relationships.
After the presentation by the professional troupe,
discussion of your impressions will be lively and welcome. This
also brings to mind the mother/daughter-in-law relationship
between Ruth and Naomi in the Book of Ruth -- no doubt a
vivid contrast.
Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at 1:30 p.m.
in the Levin Hall.
Be sure to mark your calendars!
Women’s League
Dear Friends,
If the Women’s League bookmark seems crowded with events, that’s
because it is. On this, the 50th anniversary of the synagogue and of its
Women’s League, we are striving for a most meaningful and memorable
year. After an eventful Women's League summer program, we gather
together for the High Holy Days. We know we will leave synagogue
enriched and ready for more challenges.
The bright start is October 17, when we begin our four-week series of “Getting to Know Us”
coffee Socials. Jacob Mitzner is our first speaker. Can you really recite the entire Torah by
memory, Jacob? He will be followed by three temple notables who will share with us their
lives and involvement in Jewish affairs.
The Women’s League opening meeting will coincide with the monthly Sybil Sanders Book Club
on Monday, October 15 at 1:30p.m. Gladys Jacobson will discuss a Russian family’s memoir. In
November, Leah Nettis will chair when a professional troupe presents a Psychodrama that
focuses on the complex problems of In-laws and Out-laws. A lively discussion is sure to follow
this dramatic presentation. Then it’s time for our always delightful reunion of year-rounders
and those who spend the summers away, the Membership Luncheon on December 10. Patti
Lampert and Renee Gordon promise a gourmet meal and an intriguing speaker.
Women’s League’s January 8th program will follow, featuring the endearing Beverly Sills. Sheila
Josephberg and her committee will present a film of the Jewish American diva along with some
personal memorabilia from temple members, followed by an informal luncheon. Then comes
the glorious 50th anniversary Gala of Temple Emanu-El on January 19, 2013.
Interspersed with these programs will be our Rosh Chodesh observances orchestrated by the
inspiring Barbara Steinberg.
This year’s theme for the Torah Fund Luncheon is “Uri, Uri” – Wake Up- shir dabeiri- sing a
song- of activity, of victory, and of thanks, taken from the Song of Devorah, the Prophet (Judges
5:12). What a lovely sentiment. This years honorees are Elissa Baum and Shirley Tenzer. Marjie
Konigsberg and Sandi Rosen are our chairs of this February luncheon that helps support the
Jewish Theological Seminary. Our Women’s League has always been a leader among affiliated
synagogues in this annual effort.
At the Women’s League Shabbaton in March, under the faithful hand of Mimi Kauderer, we will
mark our 50th anniversary. Our temple women were right there for the synagogue in the first
year of its existence. April will bring us a celebration of Israel’s 65th anniversary with the ever
enlightening Carmela Kalmanson chairing the occasion.
Phew. I’m out of breath.
As you can see, belonging to our Women’s League is like an invitation to a banquet of insights,
delights and camaraderie in a warm embracing setting. Please join us by becoming a member.
I close with the words of this year’s Women’s League motto, Uri, Uri, Awake, Awake to a
beautiful year.
The Rosenberg Domestic Abuse Program at Alpert Jewish Family and
Children's Services has an extensive outreach branch known as
“KOLOT,” voices for promoting healthy relationships. “KOLOT”
reaches Palm Beach County and surrounding communities.
“KOLOT” has expanded through representatives from synagogues,
Jewish organizations, concerned individuals, NCJW, Hadassah, the
YWCA, among others.
Specific initiatives of KOLOT include:
• Teen Peer Prevention Program: Relationships and Decisions
(Teen Trainers)
• New Parent Trainers Program (Moms of teens teaching other moms)
• Girl with the Purple Butterfly (Education / Prevention for girls 9-15)
• Men's Initiative (New Program)
• No Excuse for Abuse Luncheon (Annual Fundraiser)
These programs have been going on for a number of years. Some of
our teens have been Teen Trainers and helped others with understanding
bullying and abuse as well as stereotype and self esteem
issues. The primary audience is Jewish teens in middle and high school,
synagogue youth groups, Meyer Academy and Hebrew High School
students.
CLERGY GRATUITIES
Members inquire from time to time what the proper protocol is for recognizing the
Rabbi and Hazzan for officiating at life-cycle events. The answer is that the Rabbi and
Hazzan are paid by the Temple to provide those services to our members.
Therefore, separate compensation is neither charged nor expected for those
services. However, if a person feels motivated to do more, we recommend that
contributions be made to the Temple in honor of the Rabbi and/or Hazzan. Each of
them also maintains a discretionary fund from which financial assistance is provided
to those in our congregation and our larger community who are in need.
Bar Mitzvah: Jack Stoll
October 6th
When I, Jack Stoll, think about becoming a Bar
Mitzvah, I reflect upon all of the amazing
memories that I've experienced up to this
point, all of the incredible people around me,
and everything I have to look forward to moving into the future.
These amazing experiences include playing for a travel basketball
team in the AAU league, being chosen to travel to the amazing
country of China with school, participating in school plays
with some of my best friends, and most recently getting
accepted into the honorable Young Entrepreneurial Academy
(YEA!). None of this was possible without the support and
motivation from my close network of friends, and my loving
family. My mom, my two brothers, my grandpa, Lynda, my two
sisters, and my nanny have been with me the whole way. I know
that my best friend, my dad, will always be there with me looking
over my shoulder especially on my special day. So here is to the
Miami Heat winning another championship in 2013, conquering
the 8th grade with honorable grades, seeing the Miami Dolphins
make the playoffs, and continue my giving back to society by
performing charitable community service. I am ready for the big
adventure through life that awaits me.
Bat Mitzvah: Sami Cole
October 20th
Hi! I’m Sami Cole and my family and I
moved here from Northbrook, IL just over
a year ago and I just love it! I am so excited
that I am having my Bat Mitzvah, October
20th, 2012 in sunny Florida rather than
Chicago. I am in 7th grade at Wellington Landings Middle School
and I enjoy dancing, soccer, tennis, horseback riding and hanging
out with my friends. When my time came to sit with the Rabbi
to discuss my mitzvah project, I told him that I hold a special
place in my heart for animals. The organization I am helping to
support is called Canine Companions for Independence (CCI).
This organization places dogs with children and adults with
disabilities to give them an easier, more independent life. Canine
Companions for Independence provides highly trained assistance
dogs, along with ongoing follow-up services, to help those
with disabilities. These highly trained dogs assist people with
many of the simple, everyday tasks we often take for granted.
My goal is to raise $5000.00 dollars to help Canine Companions
for Independence so they can continue the awesome work
they are already doing! I really believe when you help someone
just because you want to, good things happen to you!
Celebrate Shabbat in
Style Jazz Style!
Friday Evening Kabbalat Services at Temple Emanu-El are
better than ever! The music is amazing and our new Mishkan
T’fila Prayerbook makes following along easy – even if
you don’t know Hebrew. Services are led by Rabbi
Michael Resnick, Hazzan David Feuer and our jazz pianist
extraordinaire, Irwin Solomon.
The melodies we sing will
remain pretty much the
same from week-to-week
(we’ll change things up
periodically!). The result
will be a Service that you
are familiar with, but one
that is always fresh and
beautiful. We hope you’ll
join us!
